What's In a Premonition? [Mae]

A week and a half.
At this point, that's how long K had been gone - and honestly, it was hard to feel like this place was home anymore. Holly more-or-less cooped herself up in her room, and Dr. Mikemon was doing who-knows-what with Dr. Cross in the aftermath. But, at some point, life started to move on, and the BlackGatomon started to make sense of her new reality. She had to take up her mantle at the Knights, after all, as well as try and live out her life.
It was complicated and hard and Syre didn't believe half the things she was telling herself, but it was enough that she was able to get herself out of her room and start to actually do things again. Such as today: a new shipment of supplies was in for The Great Moving Library, and Syre would pitch in to help get the crates over to the kitchen. She grit her teeth, finding in-post that the box she was carrying had quite a few watermelons in it, the unexpected weight slowing her down a bit.
"C'mon, you..." Hissing under her teeth, her tail gave a flick, a black ring appearing at the end, her burst of strength allowing her to keep that box nice and steady. Right: she turned the corner to the kitchen, set it down, and took a moment to catch her breath. "Needing champion-level for these chores, sheesh..."

Grief and loss. While both were things and feelings that Mae had found herself becoming quite familiar with over the course of her life, she never once wondered how others might process it. Perhaps today might change that for the (rookie leveled) Ophanim, whether by her own doing or not.
But enough about that, today was Unloading Day! ...Mae had honestly forgotten what the contents of these shipments were, but she was certain one of them was just a peanut butter jar for Calumon to try and fail to break into. More unexpectedly, though, she had company for this. Syre, who she...hadn't seen around the library for the past week and a half.
Mae didn't blame her.
"It's different for every 'mon, don't stress too hard about it." She told the BlackGatomon as she herself hauled a similar load of crates. They were likely equally as heavy, so Mae had to actually pour each bit of strength she could muster as Keramon into keeping the crates aloft, only to almost lose her balance. "...I might have picked up too heavy a load, though..." The Keramon admitted.

Well, at least Syre wasn't at it alone! The black cat stretched out her back, looking over her shoulder as that wiry Digimon followed right along with a heavy load of her own. Almost as if to mock Syre's own predicament, Mae kept the form of a Keramon, whose thin arms held a surprising amount of strength behind them!
... Though perhaps not enough, as she stumbled near the end. "Right, different for every 'mon. And you're able to carry this stuff without even having any feet to touch the ground with." Syre gave a well-meaning grin with a chuckle, carefully helping the virus type with the last few feet, putting the box down next to the pantry. A quick flick of the box revealed the canned food inside, definitely heavy with how much was packed in there.
"That should be just about everything for the kitchen, right?" She turned back to face the Keramon, giving another blink. "Heh, sorry, still weird to think that's your rookie. Thought it would be Salamon or something like my dad, but, eh..." Sometimes, that's just how things worked out.
Oh, speaking of! "Right, you've been more-or-less like this since the mission last week, or something? You holding up well enough from that?"

In Mae's own defense, this was the same form that was capable of almost crushing a dark ring with her bare hands. Plus, she rarely liked assuming the form of Meicoomon itself. It was either this form or Meicrackmon. "I mean, technically my lower half touches the ground a little..." The Keramon murmured as she accepted Syre's aid.
"Yes, it should. Unless they had another shipment come in while we weren't looking." The Keramon blinked right back at Syre. "...It's something from my actual mother, according to the folks here. Most of...what I am is because of my mother, whoever she is. I do wonder what it'd be like to be a Salamon, though...Even if I'd miss having arms." Yep. Sometimes, things were like that.
The Keramon then tilted her head. "Like this?" She repeated, before it hit her. Oh, relegated to her lower forms? "...Kind of. Whatever happened to me during that mission ended up exerting enough of a toll that I was sleeping for a few days. I can still digivolve, though. As to whether I'm holding up well or not..." A pause.
"...I don't know. For how simple a mission it had seemed, it was...far more. Never mind what happened to me, your mother, myself and Denryu witnessed a father make a sacrifice for those he would leave behind. I even caught a glimpse of it before it happened, too." Mae stated, before glancing down at the ground. "Truth be told, I'm...still trying to process what I had seen, if that makes sense."
Mae saw death a lot with her visions. Sure, she should be used to it by now, but...Something about seeing that never really goes away.

A little?
Syre actually gave a blink, and looked down at the Keramon's supposed floating tendrils - only to now notice the sharp stingers at the edge of each. Alright, so the movement was more like a spider than a ghost! "Well, how 'bout that?" Honestly, the cat was a bit embarrassed that she even missed that much.
That aside, the chores were more-or-less done, save for actually putting these couple of boxes away! The watermelon were fairly easy - that just went in a basket on the counter - but stowing away all of the cans in the pantry would take a hot minute. Two at a time, the BlackGatomon would put them up on the counter. "Eh, I'm not much for not having arms, to be honest. Don't really miss my in-training form all that much."
The idle conversation helped to pass the time well enough. Her ear flicked as the Keramon spoke of that mission, tilting her head as she tried to explain it. There was a father who made a great sacrifice... and Mae managed to get a glimpse of it before it happened. The cat knew a bit about it, so it didn't register too much in her head at the time. "I figured it had to be intense. For Metal Drive and mom to be pushed back, it couldn't be an ordinary situation... tch."
Syre shook her head. "Mom... well. She'd already gone and done that operation to remove that tainted data from her core before she even went out to help. Couldn't believe the news when I heard it myself... apparently she didn't even tip Toki off that something was even wrong." The cat sighed, shaking her head, trying to distance herself from the thought. Why would she do something that risky, right at the end?

The mysteries of how a Keramon moved aside, Mae gave the BlackGatomon a nod. "There were a...number of things I had not anticipated to occur. Namely the Ultimate Chaosmon, or the true identity of the Charismon. It...pushed everyone involved to their very limits."
Which, in the case of K, had honestly impressed Mae considering she undertook that mission after going through the operation. "I...had not known about that, either. I knew that something had happened--but I couldn't quite discern what. So many other visions regarding other places had unfolded atop of what transpired at Wrath's...den?"
Mae fell silent for a moment. "...Perhaps she didn't want to worry him. He had already been through a lot by then...Judging from how close they were, I don't think the knowledge of a friend's inevitable demise is considered helpful for the human psyche..." The Keramon mused.
How much of this should Mae even be saying, if at all?

More about the Keramon's premonitions? Syre let the first comment just roll off her back, getting through the canned fruit and starting to sort out the beans. "Ultimate Chaosmon... that's just a conglomerate of a failed DNA Digimon, right? It might be too random to predict?"
That was just Syre's guess, though, it wasn't as if she knew how Mae's gift worked. In fact, there were a number of things that slipped through the cracks, including a few things about her mother. She knew that something happened, but didn't know what? "Maybe it just gives a hunch if you don't have your eyes directly on the situation? Maybe... wait, Wrath's den..."
Mae's next comment hit Syre's ear like static on a TV screen, the reasoning for why K didn't want to concern Toki falling completely at the wayside. At that moment, something clicked in Syre's head, something aboout Mae's words just not sitting right. K fought the Demon Lord, and the damage that she took started the cascade of events that led to her demise.
That one pivotal moment.
Syre's eyes snapped right to the Keramon, pupils narrow - and without so much as a warning, she would pounce, intent on pinning the wiry Digimon to the ground by her nonexistent shoulders. Whether she did or not, she'd look right into that monster's eyes:
"YOU KNEW!"

"In most cases, yes, but this one was comprised of several spirit totems that Charismon, actually Cherubimon, had corrupted, and implanted into one of his remaining lackeys. Ultimately, too random to predict coming into existence, but somehow able to be factored into future visions. Why, I don't know. Perhaps the Sleipmon being at the core of the fusion...?" Mae tapped her chin some.
Even Mae didn't know how her own gift worked. That was part of why she had been doing so much work at Luminas. To eventually score an audience with someone else who had her gift. However, foresight or not...The digimon some knew as Mae and others knew as Fatebreaker did make a wrong move.
Telling a grieving daughter that she may have seen the event that began her mother's prolonged death? Unwise.
In the span of a moment, the Keramon found herself between the ground and an emotional BlackGatomon. Yet she seemed calm. Like she prepared for this in general. That, or she was used to hearing things like this. "...Not so much knew as one of the things I saw that day was that battle. I only managed to piece together what had happened a week ago."
Mae's voice was...Well, it was a little shaky, to say the least. It wasn't deprived of emotion, but there was a degree of hollowness to her words. "Fate is a rather poor mistress..."

She knew!
She knew, she knew, she knew! That thought echoed right through Syre's head, anger and rage stretched across her expression as she looked at the wiry monster below. There was no fear - no apologetic sadness, no emotion in the Keramon's response. Mae tried to calmly explain it, that it was just one of the things she saw that day, and that she only just recently pulled it together.
That fate was a poor mistress -
"Don't give me that shit, Mae!" Syre was irrational - and she finally found someone she could be mad at. Someone who she could - at least, in her own head - rightfully direct all of her anger over K's death. She felt the tears well up in her eyes anew: "It's called the Fatebreaker! You could have looked into it, you could have warned her to stay back! Y... you..."
She grit her teeth, eyes closed, as she just howled out those last words:
"YOU COULD HAVE SAVED MY MOM!"

...
. . .
"No. You misunderstand. I am the Fatebreaker." Mae tried to correct Syre. "And even if I could look into it, which, mind you, I could not, considering the events of that day were spread out across the Digital World, I doubt I could have saved K. Merely prolonged something that could very well have been...inevitable." Mae was trying to keep herself composed. She couldn't...blame Syre for lashing out, really. The Keramon had done worse when she got like that.
"Sometimes, a particular occurrence in time is rooted. Fixed. The future can refuse to change. Directing your anger at me will change absolutely nothing. Now, get off of me!" With that final sentence, Mae's composure finally broke and gave way to actual fear, with the Keramon attempting to push/shove Syre back. Though, this was a Rookie level. Syre had the ring on her tail that gave her the abilities of a Champion.

Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit! This was Mae's power - she was supposed to try and fix this sort of thing. She knew where to go for Toki, so why not for her mom? Why not for one of the most important people in her life?
It wasn't that Syre was incapable of understanding Mae's words, it was that she wasn't interested in listening from the start. For the first time, Syre felt her hand controlled by rage - rage completely focused at a single person, someone who she felt had wronged her dearly. And she was insolent enough to try and tell her what to do, at this stage? Rather than try and get off, the BlackGatomon tensed her right claw, raised it, and swung it down towards the Keramon's head...
... Only for it to miss narrowly to the right.
Somehow, some semblance of reason still remained in Syre's head. This Keramon was a friend, and as much as she wanted to, she just couldn't do that. Though if Mae were to look to her left, she'd see those nails buried right in the tile, cracking straight through to the grout below. The tension holding Mae down slowly left Syre's arms, as those tears finally welled out.
"Sovereign fucking damn it... look at me..." Her heart frayed. Frustrated at Mae, but with no clear rationale as to why. Mae might feel some sense of relief, but, well, the cat there was still a bundle of nerves.

Had Mae been anticipating being mauled for trying to tell things how they were? Possibly. This was nothing she saw via her foresight. This was just a genuine, and quite dreadful anticipation. Plus, it did just hit her that Syre had never been interested in listening to her words. A pity.
Yet, that claw never struck. Instead, it pierced through the floor, to the grout. "...I shouldn't have spoken." Mae finally said, after a long period of silence from the Keramon. "I really shouldn't have. I'm sorry that I couldn't do anything to save your family from this." A sentence she had to repeat before in different iterations. However, repetition did nothing to rid Mae of the utter dread she felt whenever something like this happened.

Syre thought this might make her feel better.
Instead, all it did was wrench the cat's heart, and slowly made her feel worse. In the long silence that followed, the cat would let go of the Keramon's shoulders, stand up, and then sit back, wrapping her hands around her knees. The Keramon would be free to get up, and even leave if she wanted to. Syre had wronged her, and just tried to attack her, so Syre wouldn't blame Mae. As that comment came, the cat's ear gave a flick, hearing a deep honesty in Mae's words.
If Syre was in her right mind, she might have just apologized. Said sorry, honestly explained her feelings, and tried to move forward from there. Instead, however, she asked a hard and unfair question:
"What did you see?" Syre's words were flat, a touch of curiosity in her voice. "In the vision that was closest to the truth... what did you see?"

Mae rose to her figurative feet, the Keramon staring at the ground, or more specifically the part where Syre's claw had struck. Sure, she wanted to leave, but then she'd be leaving a friend alone. Granted, Syre did just try to attack her, but...That didn't just mean Mae could just leave her there and be okay with it, right?
What was honestly a difficult question to answer wasn't...quite the case in the eyes of Mae. However, she still needed to tread carefully here. A sensitive subject that was still a fresh wound, as she had just seen. The Keramon glanced up.
"I saw a warrior giving her all in the battle. A warrior who managed to scratch Wrath even with the machinations empowering him, even wound him from what I could tell. There was another aiding her, but her contributions to the duel were...frighteningly miniscule. If at all. The doctor contributed so much more, and contribute he did, as he even took a blow from Wrath that was meant for the warrior, and crippled Daemon for some moments before he did that." A pause.
"...That, was what I saw. That, is what I thought was closest to the truth. That one future out of infinity."
The one future that was thanks to them being in the goddamn Rock timeline. "Does...Does that answer your question?"

What did Mae see?
Mae saw a warrior, giving it her all - a warrior who was able to challenge, but perhaps not overcome, the personification of Wrath. She saw another who fought hard, but simply couldn't meet that same threshold. And she saw yet another, a doctor, who boldly stepped in and took a heavy attack from the strong warrior. She made it sound like a fantasy, a tale.
But Syre could put faces to it. Her mom, putting everything on the line to try and save another Digimon. Cion, doing everything she could to desperately give her support. And Dr. Mikemon, stepping in to try and save the two from the unbeatable monster. Truly her family and their associates were incredible... and...
"... Not a moment of hesitation. Just like mom - if something needed to be put the right way, she'd try and do it herself. Even if she was pushing herself way too far." Syre sighed, leaning back, idly looking up to the ceiling of the kitchen. "It does answer my question, Mae. Its just... ugh."
The cat sighed, closing her eyes. "I'm sorry. I don't have an excuse - hell, mom wouldn't let me make an excuse for this." She could say she was upset, that it 'wasn't her', but what if Syre had actually gone through with that strike?
"So I'm sorry. Trying to make any of this your fault is completely unfair." She gave a look over to the Keramon. "And I'm sorry for all those visions you have to put up with. Realizing despair before it ever happens, seeing joy that might never come..."
