Day seven, 10:30 Am, Experiment 57..
Holly's pen stroke was firm even if her hands were shaking, her breath was shallow and her eyes were gaunt. She had been up for the last week struggling through these experiments, struggling through the painful remembrance of that day. Each agonizing moment that her mother was gone haunting her conscious, refusing to allow her any respite.
She hadn't eaten. She hadn't slept. She hadn't gone to school. She hadn't talked to anyone.
The meicrackmon could barely keep her form at this point, she was exhausted but the work didn't let her stop. She'd shift in her desk and adjust the papers on it. Piles of theories, drawing and large swaths of unknowns were on her desk.
"Dark, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Holy... Space.."
The meicrackmon had been on the subject of her mother for so long that it was starting to make her crack. Her ears were bruised from her tugging but that hardly didn't seem to matter. Pen strokes after pen strokes and the meicrackmon was looking at a hauntingly familiar core, with some key differences. No crack. No damage. Just how a core should be. She'd compare it to that drawing from that day.
"In theory... layer six and seven..."
She'd mumble and flick her tail, giving a small proud grin to herself. There was some progress after a few days of nothing, She'd carefully trace out some possibilities and look to the clock. Biting on her lip she'd rub at her face, tugging at her bruised ears; a soft hiss escaping her lips.
"10:45. The first significant breakthrough."
The meicrackmon's voice cracked and she'd shift to write that down, flicking her ears some more. She could hear jade pleading with her to come out from outside but she simply ignored the orb. It'd get tired of asking her that eventually and she could continue in peace.
"...Holly please..."
The meicrackmon snorted a bit and just kept working, more pen strokes and she was getting closer... Closer to something she probably shouldn't be.

And that was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Holly wasn't eating, Holly wasn't sleeping? She wasn't good at those habits to begin with, and she was further distraught with losing K. A bit of space, a grief period, it all would have been fine... but for her to miss class? For her to miss opening day?
Right, this couldn't carry on any longer. The doctor walked right up to the room, gave a knock at Holly's door, and as expected, didn't here an answer. Not like he needed one: the cat reached up, ripped the door knob out of its socket, and pulled the door right open a moment later - as if it had been unlocked the whole time.
"Holly." Mikemon's voice was stern and heavy with parental authority, walking right on in, a signature disappointed look on his face. "Notes down. Look at me. You are in big trouble, missy."

Honestly she should of known better but with the way things were she wasn't thinking straight.
Normally she ate her fill, the cat actually loved eating. More specifically loved her mother's eating. She stopped caring very quickly however about the schooling and put her focus on what she felt mattered, in a twisted sort of way she felt that she didn't even deserve to go to the classes if she couldn't help out even her own family.
That knock was greeted with just an earflick however what followed suit actually made her flinch visibly as she heard the tearing of that door knob from the socket. Right. Her da always was in champion. This stuff was made for rookies and well... It's not like even in rookie they couldn't kick it down.
That heavy voice of parental authority followed by the order of telling her to put down her notes and look at him was followed with half of it. Her ears and attention turned to her father. As well as her head but.. the notes kept scribbling.
"For what?"
There wasn't defiance in her tone; she had already accepted the fact there was no point in going to the school. She'd put her pen down after finishing what she was going over and grumbled loudly.
"Not like I'm missing too much."

Open disobedience - Holly kept writing the notes after Mikemon, who was clear that he had no patience, already told her to stop. Not only that, she simply openly disregarded his words, flippantly waving off the school she chose like it didn't matter at all. She was too holed up in her own corner to see any point of view other than her own.
It was at this point that Mikemon decided that simply trying to reason with her wasn't going to work. He glared, then gave a sigh. "Not missing much, huh?" His tone sounded bored, but if Holly was going to disrespect the school, then the dad was going to turn it right back on her. He walked on up, and reached right for Holly's freshly written notes, intent on taking them right in hand.
"Right, well, then this isn't much, either, if the school's time is so cheap for you." If he had the notes, he'd pick them up by the side, posing to rip them right in half.
Whatever breakthrough was on them didn't matter, not right now.

Well honestly with how tired she was it wouldn't really be a surprise that holly wasn't thinking straight, normally she was pretty quick to follow her dad's directions as well as being very attentive. Her ears flicked a bit and she'd raise a brow lightly.
"Yeah- The first week is never really much."
How did she even know that? Probably from one of her many movies that she watched or from a friend? The meicrackmon blinked a bit as her father walked forward and there wasn't really much in the way of resistance as she figured her father wanted to see what she was working on.
There was a sharp inhale and the meicrackmon found herself standing up, her hands going forward to grab at the notes. Her eyes widening a bit; her tendrils and tail flicking a bit as the meicrackmon's distress was immediately apparently.
"N-no! Don- She needs those!"
The meicrackmon given the chance would snatch those notes away from her father, not wanting him to damage what she imagined to being one of the most precious things in this room. Aside from her current family of course. It was here that mikemon could easily see what was the matter and given the meicrackmon's appearance whatever this was... was drastically affecting her mental and physical health.

'She needs those'.
Holly was always one to wear her heart on her shoulder, and the moment Mikemon heard that, the doctor's heart skipped a beat. This was definitely hard on their emotional daughter, but right now, Holly needed a stern talking to. The notes were held away from the MeiCrackmon as she tried to reach for them:
"No, she doesn't. What she needs is for her daughter to do more than walk around in circles!" He grit his teeth, and took a look at those notes, top to bottom. Frantic chicken-scratch, failed ideas scribbled away in the margins, downright dangerous ideas written without abandon.
Despite Holly's 'breakthrough', nearly none of this was usable. "And for what? You look and smell like a zombie, you haven't slept in days, and I've had to spend the better part of the morning begging the dean to keep you on the roster. You worked hard for this, and she was so proud of you."
He grit his teeth, and slammed those notes against the desk, a heavy paw resting right on top of them.
"Now be honest. If she saw you right now, what would she think?"

Dishonesty never suited her, even when she was an assassin she found that hiding it hurt more than anything. The meicrackmon shifted nervously, her hands grasping at those notes. Her expression changing to that of sheer panic, her ears flicking and one of her hands shakily making grasping motions to try to grab at those notes. Though she was wide off, her being as tired and hungry as she was her hand eye coordination wasn't the best.
"I'm not walking in circles! I've made breakthroughs! She can come back! We can be a family again!"
All of her ideas in base form were dangerous, every single one of them. But the meicrackmon usually was held back by her family in one regard or another; which was an honest to god good thing. The meicrackmon paused as her father told her what was what. The meicrackmon blinking a bit and looking down at herself. Her hands were shaking and the fact that he had to spend the better part of the morning begging the dean to keep her? She- The meicrackmon snarled a bit.
"It doesn't matter what she would think if she's not even here anymore! I don't care what I worked for. It doesn't mean anything if this family is broken because of losing her!"
The meicrackmon tugged at her ears, biting her lip in clear anguish. So much so that the dribble of blood eased down her face.
"I can't get things out of my head anymore, I can't get her out of my head and that bauble you made me doesn't help! Jade can't help me and this is the only way I can get her out of here!"

It was easy to keep the notes out of the disoriented hands of the MeiCrackmon - but wow. Wow, had she gone off the deep end.
It quickly became clear just what Holly was trying to do here, and what she was trying to do was in the realm of crazy, dangerous, unethical science. She wanted to claw K back from the dead, bring her back as if nothing had ever happened, and just make things how they were. Deep down, Holly probably knew that, but she had sealed away every bit of her sensibility to claw away at this faint vein of hope.
... And in the sight of this dangerous research, all Mikemon could do was one thing. He grit his teeth - and let his shadow stitching rip right through the pages, destroying not only the paper but even the ink on the page.
"How dare you." The cat almost growled, glaring as he let those scraps of paper fall to the ground. "How dare you say that what she did, doesn't matter. And how dare you already write us off as broken, when she prayed so hard that we would find a way to go on. That week... that week was not something for you to write off, Holly."
The cat neared hissing, glaring as he stepped on those notes.

Holly's hands shook and her eyes stared at the notes that her father held. The sight of those notes were somehow re-assuring but there was an instant where she saw what the mikemon was going to do. The slight shift in the way his data flowed, the soft pressure of power. She saw the notes being destroyed twice over. Once in her head and once in front of her. Her hands grasping at those scraps on the ground, one such piece managed to get into her hands. Her eyes widening as the stitching tore that asunder right in her grasp.
"Heh."
Holly let out a small somewhat barking chuckle and the meicrackmon's head lolled to one side, a somewhat nervous smile spreading from ear to ear on her face. Though the sickening look seemed to spread further and her shoulders lost a lot of their tension.
"I never said what she did didn't matter. It doesn't matter what she would of thought now if she wasn't here. And how can't I write us off as broken? You going back to your work full time to avoid the painful thinking of it, syre going out and doing job after job. Then you're trying to fuff me off at a school so you don't even have to look at your children anymore!"
She'd stand up slowly, snarling out and grasping at her father's frownt, not looking to hurt him or anything just looking to more bring him up to eye to eye with her.
"That week was the longest week of my life, every single moment I had with her I treasured more than the last. But nothing I ever have ever lasts longer than a few months. It was always work with her, was always work with you even when things were harsh. Neither of you could ever just step back to catch your bloody breaths. Always have to rush off to save the day for someone else. And for what? To be forgotten in some backwater library in the middle of nowhere!"

"Holly."
Mikemon's voice was stern. Everything that Holly said was a lie - and worse, everything that Holly said, was said with the intention to hurt. The doctor's glare did not waver or lessen with the MeiCrackmon's challenge: no sick lesson was learned at her pointing out what seemed obvious in her addled state of mind. Not only did she disparage them, she disparaged K.
Insulted her efforts, and everything that she stood for.
"Holly. Stop." He grit his teeth. "What K wanted, more than anything, was a nice, simple life with her family. She loved that - and she loved it so much, that she wanted to make sure that we, and everyone here, could keep being safe. Your mom made the Knights to fight for what she believed in. And while we're on it, I'm not a doctor for my own amusement, Holly: its what I can do to help others avoid a loss like ours."
With that, he knuckled down.
"You're going to take a shower. You're going to get something to eat. You're going to sleep - I don't care if I have to sedate you - and after your nap, you're going to write a nice, long apology letter to the dean in Luminas. And I'm not accepting any arguments. You'll thank me later."

The meicrackmon let out a soft growl as her father spoke her name, was it really a lie? Or was it hard to deal with the truth that was slapping people in the face and they just refused to deal with it. She'd grit her teeth a bit as her father continued to speak. How K wanted more than anything to lead a simple life with her family. She made the knights to fight for what she believed in and to protect us.
"Then why didn't she after making the knights retire? She could of lead such an easy life after making them but instead she had to go into the thick of dangerous events and nearly get herself killed! I heard about all the outrageous things she's done and how do you explain that she wanted to live a peaceful life when she couldn't even put down her sword? I never said you were a doctor for your own amusement. But I want to know what the point of being a doctor is; if I can't even save someone I love from dying in front of me!"
She'd growl out and her tail flicked to either side. Her tendrils weakly flailed about as her da was pushing forth that she was going to shower, eat and sleep. But it was the sedation thing that really got on her nerves.
"You can't just keep sedating me to sleep! It's unhealthy in long term and you know it! Even if I wrote a letter to the dean what am I supposed to say? Sorry for being a waste of time to your precious institution?? Sorry that I think that trying to get my mother back is more important than some school program that I already know half of the things they're trying to teach me?"
The meicrackmon let her da go and with a huff she'd fold her arms over one another. Her face was screwed up in anger and the meicrackmon's tail flicked some more.
"You don't have to accept any arguments. I'll take a shower, I'll eat. I'll sleep but I'm not going to bother with writing a stupid letter to some mon I've never met about something that fickle."
The meicrackmon stormed past her father, knowing very well that he was going to have something to say to that. They weren't done here, not by a long shot. But things at this rate were going to get said that probably would be far hurtful than any of the prodding she had been doing.

"Because retiring would have meant denying who she was."
Mikemon's voice remained stern, remained level - and it remained eerily calm, 'dad' here not even raising his voice as Holly raised her own. "Your mother wanted to give a gift to the world. She wanted to make sure that the joy she felt with our family would be felt by others - and she raised her own sword to do it. She stopped the tyrant, Wisemon. She saved Toki's life. And her leadership and presence willed others to follow along in her footsteps. As for the point of being a doctor?"
The cat tilted his head. "Holly, do you think mom is the first patient I've lost? There have been several that I've had to let go, some who were much closer to me than others. And each of them twists the heart - each of them makes you question what you could have done differently. But even in the face of that, I've saved several more who would have died without my aid. You do not get to stand in front of me and tell me there's no value in it."
He was calm. He rebutted Holly's points while keeping his tension - though, yes, it was unhealthy for Holly to repeatedly be sedated. "But not sleeping at all is worse. You fell off your schedule. You need to get back on it. And yes, you are going to apologize to the dean. Apologize for insulting the chance that the school gave you for your own selfish, dangerous research."
He felt himself set down - and saw Holly try and slip on by. She was going to head out to the shower. Okay, she was at least listening to the content of what he had to say.
"You're writing that letter. And then you're going to start attending next semester." Mikemon looked over his shoulder: "You know less than one percent of what you need to be a doctor. And missing four days of class has put you irreparably behind."

"Even if it meant that she could of been happy and followed the dream of having a peaceful life? One that she sorely wanted but couldn't even stop herself?"
Holly bit her lower lip as her dad continued on. Saying how she wanted to give a gift to the world, she already had done so much! She didn't need to kill herself over this stuff. She'd clench her fists and look down a bit.
"She did so much for the world, but why couldn't she just... stay home."
The meicrackccmon shook her head a bit as the doctor asked her if she thought that the only loss he had experienced patient wise was her mother. The meicrackcmon looked to her father and after a few moments mumbled a soft question.
"Was she the only person you lost that was like her though? Like... I don't know very much about you outside of the little things you tell me Da. I don't know if you've had other wives, other friends or lovers that were closer to you than she was. I don't know the sort of things you've been through. All I know is you're the best doctor in the world and that you're my Da. So I don't know what sort of stuff you've been through."
The meicrackmon huffed a bit and looked at her shaking hands. She needed to get back to sleeping, she needed to get back into things and apparently she needed to apologize to the school. She'd scrunch up her eyes and let out a firm exhale.
"What am I supposed to even say to them? Da. I know less and less about this world with each passing day. Knowing less than one percent about being a doctor never stopped me from wanting before. What stopped me from wanting to do anything of the sort is the failure that I saw in myself when seeing my ma go."
The meicrackmon's ears flattened and she'd step into the bathroom. The shower that she took was long and rather stressful, there was sounds of weeping in it as the meicrackmon had used her research to sort of cushion the blow of losing her mother. A few hours passed and eventually the meicrackmon stepped out of the shower; she looked a lot better even if her eyes were puffy and red from the crying she had been doing.
"...."

"You already know the answer, Holly."
Mikemon sighed. Of course that's who K was. Selfless, proud to be selfless, and a paragon for others to follow. Honestly, the doctor was fairly sure that K didn't like the responsibility thrust onto her - but she took it on anyway. She did what she was able to, to the very end.
But then, Holly's question turned a bit personal, a rare soft question perking through. Was K the first, or was there someone else? To that, the cat's ear gave a flick, the doctor's gaze flicking off to the side. "... She wasn't the first one like her I've lost. If you mean someone I gave my heart to." But he didn't go into further detail.
It wasn't important. What was important was that Holly got back up on her heels - and as she again objected to the letter, the cat simply gave a sigh.
"You'd better figure out what you're going to write, then. No arguments - if not me, then Stingmon is going to make sure that you follow-up on it."
With that, he'd finally let Holly on by, and Mikemon would give a sigh, pinching his sinus between his fingers. Clearly, he didn't like this, but what was he supposed to do about it? No, all he could do was be the stern father, to try and guide Holly back onto the right path. It seemed like hours, but eventually, Holly would come back out - fur tapered down, red in her eyes, clearly crying.
The doctor blinked, and gave a sigh, motioning for Holly to kneel down - as the doctor took a fresh set of bandages, and worked on taping up her battered ears.
"All this talk about dragging her back? She's already come back as another Digimon, Holly."

"Still doesn't change the question..."
Holly knew the answer already yes, but it was painful to really think about. She knew what the world meant to her mother. No one would really know if the Renamon liked the responsibility or not, perhaps that was something they could ask the second iteration if they ever came. Holly's ears flicked at hearing her Da's answer.
There was a bit of blinking and she'd turn her head a little bit, her expression shifting to that of confusion. She... really didn't know anything about her Da outside of his doctoring and parenting did she? There was a bit of hurt in her eyes and she'd simply look away from him not pushing the subject any further.
"...."
She had nothing to say to him about the letter, there was nothing in her head in regards to the bloody thing. He was right to be stern, right to try to guide her back to where she needed to be. If he had left it who knew what holly would of done in a desperate effort to get her mother back?
At the end of her shower sure she looked a lot better, refreshed even. But there was a sore level of tired in her body that the mikemon could easily recognize. She'd kneel down quietly and the meicrackmon flinched at feeling the doctor touch her rather over sensitive ears. However the next line made the meicrackmon's eyes widen.
"W-what? Why haven't- When? You... could of gone and gotten her then! S-sure she might not be the same but we're still family!"
