Didn't expect to find That [Ron/Diego]

It was a somewhat humid, yet not overtly hot sunny day over the Eastern Timberlands. High summer was here, but the trees usually prevented it from getting too hot, well, most of the time. Fortunately the heatwave from the last week had been brought to an end by summer rainstorms that had soaked almost the whole forest through. While the heavy rains and winds had caused some minor damage, the main thing was that they had reduced the risk of fire, and that meant that the woods were relatively safe for the time being. Furthermore, this meant that Owen the Gaomon, a digimon teacher that helped teach the young digimon in the town of Rosewood vital skills such as combat and survival, finally gave the OK for them to complete one of their field tasks - basically a lesson in gathering. "Now that the weather's right, we're gonna test you all on searching for things that would be of use to you in the forest." he had told the survival class that morning. "You're all going to be paired off in teams of two, yes, you can choose your own teams, and your task for the next four hours is to go into the forest around Rosewood and find as many useful things as you can, then return them to here and explain why you made the choice of what you gathered. You can gather anything you like, just as long as you can justify it. All clear? Alrighty then. When time's up, you'll hear me. Your time starts... now!"
And so the digimon had split up and made their way into the woods. Two of them were none other than Owen's own twin sons, Matty the Onmon and Jimmy the Musimon. While both of them thought they had better things to do than this today, well, they knew it made their dad happy when they participated in his classes. Plus while they both preferred goofing off and playing around, they did at least pay enough attention to what was going on to think that they had a chance in this. After an hour though, they were beginning to have doubts. "How hard is it to find some bastard berry bushes?!" Jimmy complained. He had been on the lookout for berries of any kind, but just couldn't find any. "Use yeh nose, Jimmy" Matty told his twin brother. So far he was going the easy option and looking for some good, tough wooden branches that could be used for tools. They had to be long and sturdy, and so far he had only found three. Eventually, the pair came across a clearing, where five large tree stumps indicated that some trees had recently been felled here. There was a ring of stones around some bare, scorched earth, clearly the place for a fire, but they had no reason to light one yet, not with the both of them panting from the humid heat. "Eh, to heck with this, I need a break." Jimmy said, sitting resolutely on one of the stumps. Matty joined him, nodding in agreement. The Onmon reached into his pocket, pulling out a plastic packet of something. "Muesli bar?" he asked. Jimmy nodded, and Matty opened it, split it in half, then the two took a light snack. In their break, they had to decide how to up their game. They had just 3 hours left, and it seemed that useful things to scavenge in these woods were hard to find.

Suddenly, a portal opens up in the middle of the clearing, and a human in brown shorts, a dark blue striped shirt, and a backpack falls through, screaming with his eyes closed. He falls on his back with an " Oof.", groaning and rubbing his eyes as the portal closed. " Ah man, I thought I was gonna hit the water, guess I didn't see this ground." He gets up and opens his eyes, only things looked different to him, instead of a concrete jungle, he was now in the tree verity. " Oooooookay, did that fall knock me out or something, what's with all the trees?" He said, taking out his phone, only to see that it shows nothing but static on the screen.
"Fantastic, now my phone's busted. Well, dream or not, I guess I'll try and find a place to take shel..." He stops mid sentence as he sees the two digimon, his mouth agape. "Yep, I'm knocked out, and dreaming about a forest, that makes the most sense, might as well enjoy this while I can."
Ron mutters, and slowly walks toward them, not sure what they would do, he may think this is a dream, but he doesn't want to make it a nightmare. "Uh, hey little guys, can you talk?" He asks, ready to run if they attack.

The truth was that Diego had absolutely no reason to disguise himself as a digimon for his time in the digital world. Psychemon told him that she had no idea how humans in the digital world were viewed, as apparently back in her time they simply didn't exist there. The fact that he looked like the spirit inside him, then, was out of an abundance of caution, something to help him fit in with the rest of Owen's class. "How is this supposed to help us find your other parts?" he mumbled while climbing a rather unfortunately high tree in pursuit of a couple juicy-looking fruits. He wasn't talking to anybody who was visible, though. You gotta know how to survive here, plus you could use some more practice with my body. It's rough. It's dangerous. At least... it was.
"Excuse me?"
I don't freakin' recognize anything! I dunno how old I am, but there definitely wasn't a whole town this far east. I don't even think there was much civilization at all.
"So you're telling me you know about as much about the digital world as I do."
Pretty much, D.
"Can I at least take this pelt off? I'm gonna sweat through it in this heat."
You do, and I'll throw you from this tree.
Diego was suffering in the humidity, but climbing was something he could do just fine as a human. Borrowing Psychemon's body was an adjustment but not a handicap. While hanging onto one branch, he began to swing himself toward an apple the size of a cantaloupe when he got distracted by the portal dumping someone in the middle of a clearing just in front of him. "What- is that a guy?" he exclaimed that in shock just as his hand grabbed the new branch and plucked the fruit, letting go of the old branch. He didn't account for his own weight correctly, though, plus he was distracted by the surprise of a human here.
When the support snapped, the poor kid ended up dropping an unfortunate height straight down onto his backside. "Ow!" he began to moan from the pain. It became a dull throbbing quickly enough that he was able to stand up in a few seconds, albeit still rubbing his own posterior, but gravity had another surprise for Diego: apparently he had accidentally tossed the giant apple upwards at the top of the fall, and that was why it took some extra seconds to fall down to Diego. Totally oblivious, the apple fell on his head, knocking him straight back down. The apple came with him, for it had impaled itself on his horn and spilled practically all its juices onto his face on impact.

As they chewed on their halves of the muesli bar, Matty and Jimmy's identical red eyes focused on a flash of light above them. Their eyes widened as something fell from it. Something about double their size, but they recognized what they were quickly enough. This was a human. Immediately, the Onmon and Musimon conferred for a moment, thinking this would be a golden opportunity to get through their class today. "I reckon dad would be satisfied if we told him that we helped a human instead of scavenger hunting." Jimmy reasoned with his twin. "Agreed, but we gotta make a good impression, dad might not believe us if we scare him away." Matty replied. Well then, the brothers agreed on a course of action, and they turned to the human with cheerful expressions. "Heya, human! Nah, don't worry, we're not gonna attack you." Matty assured the human. "We're good digimon. Well then, seems you've slipped through a portal and ended up on this world, eh? No worries, we can help you if you like." he then made a small bow, as did Jimmy. Their parents had taught them that humans found it polite to bow upon greeting. "My name's Matty, and this is my brother Jimmy. Nice to meet you."Suddenly, a Psychemon fell out of a tree nearby. Matty and Jimmy yelped in shock, but quickly recognized them as someone who had been present in their father's class an hour earlier. "Oh geez, pal, you alright?" Jimmy asked the Psychemon with concern. "That was a nasty fall there... agh!" he flinched as the apple fell down too and was impaled by the Psychemon's horn, spraying a bit of juice as it did so. Realizing no harm had come of it, Jimmy attempted to make conversation from this. "Well... that's... impressive I guess?" Jimmy remarked, awkwardly. "Hmm... hey, how come you don't have a partner from class?" Matty asked the Psychemon, curiously. "Dad said we could team up in pairs. Did you miss out on a partner?" he'd finish with an expression of sympathy. Well then, supposing there was no harm in getting to know each other, Matty and Jimmy invited the new arrivals to sit down and relax so that they'd be able to recover from their ordeals. The twins would offer their water flasks for them to drink a bit if they needed. Water rationing wouldn't be needed today, the streams around the forest were full of fresh water, they supposed these two might need it more than them. "So... considering this is something of a rather sudden meeting, how about we discuss a little about what just happened now?" Matty suggested. "Starting with you, Mr. Human. Do you know how you managed to get here?"

He relaxes at the friendliness of the monsters. "Okay good, they aren't gonna try and attack me, odd names for monsters though. Getting real creative there brain, no really, great job." He thinks this as they greet him, and he gives them a smile. "Nice to meet you too, I'm Ron. That's kind of you two to help me out, I'm pretty sure I'm not near where I was, and I could use al the help I can get."
Suddenly, another monster falls from the sky, when it lands, Ron jumps with a yelp, and turns around too the direction of it. He's surprised at it's horn, then chuckles at when the apple falls on the horn, but he still keeps his guard up, after all this could want to attack. "Hey, you okay? That was a pretty long fall, but at least you got some food out of it."
He turns to the other two, but is ready to move if the newcomer decides to attack. "Well, I was walking down the river, enjoying a nice day, when I accidentally tripped and started falling backward into the water. I closed my eyes, preparing for when I would hit it, but I fell here instead. Now, you said it was a portal that I fell through, right?"

Diego-Psychemon was not impressed by the strange little monster's attempt at humor, if only because the very fact that he was evading the obvious meant that it was indeed obvious. However, still pouting, Diego couldn't help licking some juice off his own face. It was delicious.
Matty had a good question, though. Why was Diego all alone? Well, the longer version of the answer was that he ended up without a partner partly due to bad luck and the other part due to him not really seeking one out. He had gone and taken the hope-somebody-approaches-him-first tactic to wind up the only one alone, something which resulted in him becoming the odd one out. No big deal. It was like any class project: Diego thought he'd be happier and better doing it alone. But to answer the Musimon he responded, "...Guess I did."
A good shake of the head cleared his thoughts, reset the atmosphere, and dislodged the fruit from his horn. It did not, however, clean off the stains in his pelt already setting in. But that wasn't what really had his attention. It was the older boy. Diego's English was rusty but not awful as he curiously approached the new arrival and asked, "So... you're a human? You just... fall?" in a pronounced Uruguayan accent. Diego was a little torn about what to do. He didn't know much more about this world than Ron did. Should he escort Ron back? Give him directions to the train? Should he explain everything or nothing at all? If he did, should he reveal his true identity as human in the process? Psychemon knew he had all these questions but didn't know the answers either, or at least she didn't give him any. "Um, hi, my name is D- Psychemon."
So he thought he'd step back again and observe. What would other, real digimon do in this situation? He took it as an opportunity to learn about digimon-human relations and attitudes. Matty and Jimmy were acting nice enough, though, which was a hopeful sign.

So, the human's name was Ron. Nothing out of the ordinary about that. His story was that he was walking along a river, then fell into it. There wasn't any water involved though, just that portal apparently. This made the twin brothers exchange confused looks. "That's... not normally what happens from falling into rivers, but, like dad says, nothing's impossible." Matty said, shrugging. "Oh, right. Yeah, dad said that normally when humans come into this world, they have a little device on them. Do you have that?""Heyy, slow down there, Matty, let the guy get his bearings first." Jimmy told his brother, then grinned up at Ron. "Well, in case you don't know yet, allow me to go Professor Oak on yeh and say this place is called the digital world, and it's populated by guys like us - digimon!" he was making dramatic gestures with both his arms and ears as he spoke. "Ah, right, yeah. Normally the way to get here is through portals, like the one you just went through. I don't know how they work though, just that seems to be the main way humans come here." Matty explained. The Psychemon meanwhile had something of an unusual accent. Not that Matty or Jimmy could judge, since both of them spoke with a light Scottish element. He also introduced himself. "Hiya, D'Psychemon!" Jimmy said cheerfully. "I think it's just Psychemon, right?" Matty asked. "Well then... back to my earlier question, Ron, you got a device on yeh? If you do, it might be easier to help you out."

Ron was having an easy time accepting what they where telling him, since he still thought of this as a dream, he was just going with whatever the "dream" threw at him. "Digimon, that's what you're called? Huh, gotta say that's not what I was expecting the name to be, wasn't expecting anything, to be honest. Anyway, nice to meet you, Psychemon." he greeted the digimon, smiling.
He took out his phone upon being asked if he had a device. "You mean this phone? I mean yeah, most everyone has one these days, although it's not perfect. This thing has been acting up ever since I got to Japan, I have no idea how it started, but it's completely broken, look!"
He shows that the phone has white static on the screen, a faint outline of a symbol is seen behind it. "It was kinda broken before, but now this pretty much tells me I need a new phone. Maybe the fall did it?" he sighs. "But whatever, I'm sure dad and I can afford a new one... Now I think of it, I heard some voice yesterday on here, telling me to 'find it', maybe this got hacked?"

Throughout this conversation, both Psychemon and "Psychemon" were watching and learning. The way the brothers described humans, their arrival, their frequency - it all suggested that lots of humans have come through this place before. I doubt they'd know Pokemon if humans didn't bring it here, Diego also reasoned. But the way they discussed interworld travel so casually - these two weren't surprised at all! Well, maybe a little, but more that it happened here and now than just the fact that it happened, so it seemed. And they know about those machines, too... maybe I should see if they know something I don't?
Poor Ron, though. At least when Diego found Psychemon, all he had to do was reach his arm through a portal and snatch it right back. But this guy? He went full digital! Well, that, and his precious cell was destroyed to boot. Diego wasn't quite able to make out its symbol, so he didn't think anything of it, supposing it was just part of the original screen it had been on before its accident. "...Who knows?" was Diego's evasive answer when asked what happened to it. "Weird stuff happens in dreams. It'll all make sense tomorrow, or if it doesn't you'll forget all about it anyway."
Diego couldn't have known that Ron was assuming this was a dream, but he was trying to suggest it anyway. The kid wasn't exactly having the best time ever since he encountered the digital existence, so he was going to try and do whatever he could to stop this person from getting involved either - if he was even real, that is. "Y-you should go home! This is no place for humans! It's full of scary monsters and weird powers and... and demons and dragons and goblins and stuff!" Of course, his claim was rather obviously contradicted by Matty's and Jimmy's perfect willingness, plus he didn't look so scary himself with a horn still covered in the unusual fruit's juice.

At this point, Matty and Jimmy only had a vague idea on what a "digivice" was meant to look like. So that when Ron showed them his phone, it crossed their minds that this was probably the "device" that they had been told to look out for with new humans. "Uhh... yeah. That might be it." Matty said, the Onmon being the more mechanically-minded of the brothers. "I'm not sure what Japan is though." When Ron showed them the device, the screen was completely static, but there was a symbol that flashed every so often. That piqued their curiosity. Symbols like that were often a big deal in the digital world. Most meant nothing or something basic, while others were icons of power. They could be crests, artifacts or other things. Then he said that he heard a voice saying to "find it". Now this was going onto territory the twins weren't at all familiar with. Was the voice talking about a digiegg? Or a digimon? Or even something else? Either way... there was something that both of them found trustworthy with this human. Call it a hunch, maybe, some kind of familiarity with his scent (both had keen senses of smell after all), but, they thought that somehow helping out this human would be a good thing. "So... it's completely non-responsive?" Jimmy asked, curiously. "As in, nothing you do can make it do any response? Hmm... maybe try it out again now that yeh're in the digital world?" the Musimon suggested. Then Psychemon suggested the proper thing to do was for Ron to go home, as this place was dangerous. "Hey... it's not so bad in this part of the forest." Jimmy assured them. "Besides, me and my bro can look after yeh if you need a little while to explore. We happen to be the sons of two really powerful digimon and we know a little bit about how to defend ourselves."Matty supposed he'd best be the voice of reason just in case Ron didn't want to linger here. "If not, we can guide yeh back to Rosewood, then you can catch a Trailmon back to Terminus and yeh can find your way home from there."

Ron smiled when Psychemon mentioned this being a dream, "I knew it, this was too odd to be real. Weird that he's trying to get me to leave, I mean monsters do sound scary, but those powers sound interesting, I should see what my brain comes up with, and enjoy it while I can still remember this." Ron thinks, he had made his mind up on going where this takes him, "It's not like I'm actually in danger here." he reasons.
He thinks about trying out the phone again, like Jimmy suggested, and nods. He takes it out of his pocket, and try's the power button, not surprisingly, it still has static on the screen. He decides to try swiping up to bring up the password screen, when instead the symbol starts to glow faintly. A map then shows up, a forest is shown, and a line to some destination goes through it. At the start of the line, it shows the clearing, and a dot that was where his general location is.
"...Huh, well that's new, I tried to do what I usually do to get into this, but then some map showed up on here, had a weird icon in the static that glowed some kind of green color when I touched the screen." He showed the map to the three of them. "You think we should go to that spot?" He asked, making up his mind immediately to go there, regardless of what they said.

Not sure what Japan was? Well they knew who humans were - and what Professor Oak was. Diego narrowed his eyes curiously in response.
Based on what Diego had seen of Rosewood and the forest, he was inclined to agree Jimmy. It wasn't just safe. It was actually kind of nice. He knew he was lying. But he wasn't willing to admit to it. All he wanted to do was step in and encourage the brothers' offer to escort Ron to the train, where the boy would have wanted to make sure he really made it all the way home (and, ideally, disregarded everything that happened to him). But Ron? Well, he just had to go and be the curious one, didn't he? Diego couldn't have that. "It's a trap!" He wasn't actually thinking when he blurted that out. He just did it. That was his honest gut reaction to following the trail. He had suspicions of what may be at its end. But, he said it. So he had to deal with it. "D-definitely don't wanna go! That place is-" Gulp. "-One of the tricks of the monsters is to lure humans straight into their dens!" Diego made Psychemon's face as scary as he could as he got closer and closer to Ron. "They'll just stomp you and smash you and - dare I say it - eat you!"
A pause. Diego let the threat sink in. D, you're being ridiculous. I'm not gonna be part of this.
"Wait- wait!" Diego tried to plead with his spirit, but it was no use. She took her power right back from Diego, leaving the stunned boy sitting in the grass as the power of his spirit retreated into the D-Tector on his lap - the real kind of digivice. His shorts and short sleeves meant he was well-prepared for this humid kind of environment, but despite that he was still sweating. It wasn't just because of the heat. "Psychemon! ¿Realmente elegiste ahora de todos los tiempos no querer ayudarme, intrusiva, molesta, ruidosa ...?" The thirteen-year-old boy knew he was insulting an entity only he knew about, but once his frustration was over, he had a real egg on his face (though not juice anymore). He pursed his lips and muttered, "...I can explain."

Matty and Jimmy looked with interest as Ron's device eventually showed a map of their immediate vicinity, complete with a destination in mind. "Well... obviously!" Matty exclaimed. "Dad told us that devices like that lead you to something important, so, if that's what your device says, we should seek it out. Right, Jimmy?""Yeah, I agree!" Jimmy added. "Even if it might not be particularly interesting, if human devices show something interesting, we gotta check it out."Following that, Matty and Jimmy turned and blinked at Psychemon's outburst, their eyebrows raised with a degree of disbelief. Just... what was this guy's problem? "How do you know that?" Matty asked, simply. Then, the brothers gasped as the next event happened, when the Psychemon transformed into a human boy. He had a device on his lap as the light faded, and then he started to angrily speak to "Psychemon" in a language other than English, but Matty and Jimmy knew enough of it to determine that he found this as some kind of betrayal. When he was finished, the boy said he could explain. "Please, do so?" Matty asked of him, totally confused with what had just happened.

Ron was confused as to why this guy was trying to keep him from going into the forest. "Dude, calm down, I mean this is a dream, not like anything that attacks is gonna actually kill m-" Before he finished, Psychemon turned into a human, stunning Ron. "Woah now that is cool, this dream keeps getting more and more interesting."
"So what was that, you can turn into a digimon? Is that your only form, or can you turn into one of these guys? Wait, are you two also humans? Is that why you know about Pokemon?"
He couldn't stop asking questions, he wanted to know as much as he could before he would wake up, but that wouldn't happen. "How long have you had this power?"
"Is this something that everyone can do, or is it only certain people who can do it? Are there special requirements needed to turn into one, or does it take training to use?"
"Can it be learned in a day, or will it take at least weeks to do it? Is it only possible here, or can it be done in the real world as well? Can you-"
This will go on forever, if you let it.

Diego froze. All eyes were on him. He didn't exactly get stage fright, but he was about to be caught in the fact that pretty much everything that had come out of his mouth so far was a lie. Even worse, he told them that he could reasonably explain himself, which might not have been so bad except that was yet another lie. To that one, he definitely had to own up. He flushed red, got a little hot under the collar, and spoke softly, "...I was wrong. I can't explain."
You are hopeless.
At first Diego actually tried to answer Ron's barrage of questions. "Yeah, I gue- Well, no, just- I don't think-" But he got the message pretty fast. He wasn't able to get a word in edgewise. For the rest of the questions the younger boy let Ron go on and on, mistakenly believing there was going to be an end to them. There wasn't. At some point he flashed a glance at the real digimon that nonverbally spoke, "Can you believe this guy?" before he remembered they probably think Diego is nuts, too. Not that they'd be wrong. Aren't older kids supposed to be more mature? Diego asked Psychemon. I'm probably pretty old, and I still think 'that's what she said' is funny. For real? That one's kinda old, too.
A bit too polite to interrupt, Diego opted to kill time the way he often did in class with a teacher who droned on and on: have a mental conversation with Psychemon instead. Ron would get to talk uninterrupted by him. However, he wasn't very secretive about it. At some point, his eyes drifted upward and away, not blinking that often. He wasn't nodding his head or giving any indication he was listening at all. Yep, he was spaced out entirely. Someone would let him know when that guy finally shut his trap... right?
