Note: the non-shadowed parts means you can see it. The shadowed path means you have yet able to see it, or not there yet. There are no relations to canopy (sadly) There's not much to see this time around. They would see that the canopy still blocking most of the light, but their trek was mostly uneventful. The labyrinth-like foliage at the moment is just straightforward, with some rocks and bushes around. It kind of curves a bit toward a clearing... Hmmhmmm, what should they do for the meantime meanwhile? Speaking of which, it's rather... eerily quiet for some reason. Note: You can interact with everything shown in the map. You're currently at the clearing with two trees, and mushrooms... also rock obviously.

Bezil gave a chuckle as Skadi walked over and put an arm around him. He didn't mind, in fact he was glad they had reached this level of familiarity where they were happy to be around each other. Bezil liked making more friends this way.
As they walked out, Kenny mentioned his D-Nexus and asked to scan him to find out more about his abilities. Bezil blinked for a moment as he processed this, then supposed it would be okay. "Alright, just as long as you tell me what Skadi's capable of too, I wanna know your combat abilities too." he answered.
The D-Nexus scanned him and the results showed up on screen. Bezil would look at them too, just to see what it said about him. "Ah, yep, that's right!" he said, as it was revealed that he was strong against fire but weak to water, and his special attack was Pyro Wave. "I can attack with Ice as well, plus use my hammer for general melee damage if the need arises." he explained. "Also I can digivolve to Champion level if I need to, my abilities are mostly similar in that form too, only I can fly better."
Once that was dealt with, Bezil looked around the area. The first thing that he noticed was that there were many small bush-like plants on the path ahead. Also the path seemed to be a mix of several types of ground. Some was bare dirt, others were tall grass, and others were short grass. The Gumdramon stopped for a moment to think.
"Hmm. How about we inspect the bushes?" he asked Kenny and Skadi. First up, Bezil would take a look at the two bushes on the path northward. Then noted that there was something of a large clearing ahead, with different types of plants.
If there was nothing in those, he'd pause in the clearing with the mushrooms. "We should probably advance carefully here, I can't see everything ahead." he explained. "Why don't we take a look at the mushrooms?" he asked, but then he had another thought. "Oh, don't actually touch them though... hmm... ah, we could use this." he brought the Botany book Hikaru had given him out from his backpack, flicking through the pages until he found a picture of what they looked like and hopefully what their properties were.
Bezil hoped that Skadi was still keeping a lookout, and would look up if he heard her say anything.
Results of the Improved Scanner:
Digimon: Gumdramon Level: Rookie Attribute: Vaccine Families: Nature Spirits, Dragon's Roar Type: Small Dragon
Combat Passive: Fiery Heart - Bezil may have beast-like fur from his parents, but at heart he is still a little dragon. This power protects him from the effects of heat and reduces incoming fire damage from Champions and lower by 50%. To offset this, water attacks deal 30% more damage to him.
Pyro Wave - Bezil's tail hammer ignites with fire. Then he jumps up in the air, somersaults once, then slams it into the ground, sending a wave of fire at the enemy and any others standing within 5 meters of them. If it hits, removes the debuffing effect of Frosty Tail early. [Cooldown: 1 turn]

Before the scanning could go underway, Bezil requested he know of what Skadi herself could do. "Yeah, why not?" Kenny agreed with that sentiment. Granted, they were planning to tell him anyways, but whatever. Now, you may be thinking, 'But wait! Didn't Kenny and Skadi learn that Bezil could wield fire and ice abilities when he met him on their first trip to the Digital World'? Well, yes they did. But it wouldn't kill them to see what Bezil could actually do with them.
And as it turned out, not only he was highly resistant to fire (which wasn't much of a surprise, considering he was a dragon) and literally ignite his tail alight (how he could do that at all without the rest of his fluffy should-be-flammable body catching fire would remain a mystery for the ages), but, he could also digivolve to his Champion level on a whim and fly. Kenny nodded with interest with what he was seeing. From what he could tell, Bezil's airborne abilities would easily complement Skadi's more land oriented fighting style.
True to their word, Kenny and Skadi would need to tell him next, as the young man would start to explain, "Well, Skadi can-" He was swiftly interrupted by the sheep-goat thing walking in front of him to speak.
"Kenny, I think you and I know that I can speak for myself." She grinned to him, before turning over to Bezil, "From what I've learnt, I'm more suited to fighting on the land. I can create earthquakes and spires with a single punch and stomp, and..."
"Create loud, ear-splitting bleats as well?" Kenny joked, "Like, God-forbid you don't end up on the business end of her bleats, Bezil. Your eardrums will be feeling that in the morning."
"Oh come on, they're not that loud!" Skadi wailed in mock protest, "Anyways, I can also digivolve to my Champion form, who can do pretty much more of the same, except I also gain an Ice and physical resistance. Pretty neat, huh?" Would Bezil see much benefit from that?
With that all said and done, the trio would continue on their journey. And all the while, they would still be on the lookout for any potential opening or anything useful lying around, and especially for any enemies that may beckon near. However, they left the leadership reins to Bezil. Being the son of a solider and the leader of one of the biggest teams in the Digital World made him much more of an effective leader for the mission.
But when Bezil pointed to the bushes, the duo nodded in agreement, "Yeah, I think we should. Maybe we could find something useful in them, to be honest." Kenny agreed, before helping to look with the Gumdramon.
After that, they would reach the mushroom clearing. Bezil would then suggest to check the mushrooms, but not touch them, in which Kenny nodded once again. Skadi was more laser focused on seeking out wild Digimon ready to attack, but while Bezil looked at the book, Kenny would glance upon the mushrooms.
"Wonder what do those mushrooms do, anyways?" He pondered, "With all the crazy shit I keep seeing in the Digital World, I wouldn't be surprised if those mushrooms were capable of coming to life and nipping my fingers off if they get too close to them at least." Still, he'd head Bezil's warning and not touch the mushrooms with his bare hands until further notice, lest anything bad happen to him. Meanwhile, Skadi would still be on the lookout for whatever, or whoever, may show up. Things had been suspiciously quiet, and rule of thumb: a good predator barely garnered attention til the last minute.

Bezil decided to open the book, and the book... definitely have all sort of answer. The index showed everything thankfully... the bushes that Bezil first encountered, it's green in color, and is apparently full with olive sized fruits. According to the book, it's called Acoberry. When it's ripe, it's purple in color. They tastes sweet but unripe one unfortunately will cause paralyzing stomachache that can last a night if eaten raw and unripe. A ripe one tastes slightly like wine, but without the alcoholic properties. When ripe, it's great for emergency sugar supplies apparently.. but sadly, it doesn't seem that it's harvest season.
The mushroom however? It's standard Digi-mushroom. Filling, with decent amount of fiber and protein. It's also not at all poisonous, which means they can pick it up easily. However, Digishroom only appeared in small quantity rather than in cluster. They're always one, big mushroom... so this means in that clearing, there are only two Digishrooms... Or is it? They might have to venture deeper to certain part of the clearing to know for sure...
By the way, three portion of Digishroom is enough to feed one person, which means at least they'd need nine if they want to eat their fill of the meal.
Either way, there are no signs of danger for the meantime... the birds are still chirping, echoing to their side...
Should they venture deeper, or should they examine the trees where the mushroom are nearby?

After the digivice told of Bezil's abilities, it soon turned out that Skadi would next tell of her own abilities. It seemed her attacking element was Earth, while she had a good defense against ice. The Gumdramon nodded when he heard this, it made sense to him, fleece was good warmth after all.
"Yeah, that sounds pretty good to me." Bezil answered when prompted, grinning. "Okay, yeah... if difficult situations happen, I could take to the air, while you handle the ground, that way we can be a pretty strong team that covers each others' weaknesses."
Although the mention of ear-splitting bleats made him shudder a little. Bezil had battled enough Shoutmons to learn to dislike ecsessive sound blasts against his ears. But at least it made him experienced enough to know what to prepare for.
When they were investigating the plants, Bezil couldn't help but chuckle at Kenny's remark about the possibly carnivorous mushrooms. "Well... most harmful plants are pretty much already digimon. Inanimate objects like these normally don't harm you, unless they have a poison in them. But it's better to be cautious when seeing something you're not familiar with." the Gumdramon explained.
Bezil eventually found the entries of the plants in his book. The bushes were apparently Acoberry bushes, that produced a grape-like fruit that tasted like wine when ripe, but caused great discomfort if eaten unripe, so he'd leave those alone.
The mushrooms however were digimushrooms, and apparently safe to eat. Not quite enough to provide sustenance for a full meal, but edible nonetheless.
"Oh yeah, I've eaten mushrooms before for dinner." Bezil said, smiling. "They taste great when fried in butter. Probably best to leave them be though, unless we find one big enough to make a meal out of."
Following this, it seemed their option was to continue deeper into the forest, or take a closer look at the other side of the clearing. Bezil could see advantages to either option, but thought that maybe making sure that they didn't leave anything behind was wiser.
"What do you think, Kenny? Skadi?" he asked his companions. He was fine with either option here, and if they had a good reason for pressing onward, he'd probably go with that.

It was a good thing Bezil did check up on the botany book; common sense did dictate that touching, much less eating, wild vegetation like this was not a good idea. Unbeknown to Bezil, however, Skadi was secretly peering over his shoulder, also reading the book as well. First up were the Acoberries, sweet tasting grape-like fruits that could easily make one sick if eaten at the wrong time. And while Kenny opted to follow Bezil and leave the fruits alone, Skadi would pick quite a few from the bushes while no one was looking. No, she wasn't going to eat them, obviously, but if she could feed an attacker one...
As for the mushrooms? Well, as it turned out, apart from the fact that the average Digital World mushrooms shared more or less the same traits as real world mushrooms, at least according to Bezil, these mushrooms sitting in front of them were edible. Not much here to fill anybody here, mind, but it was something. The fluffy Gumdramon had attested to the deliciousness of the mushrooms, and Skadi nodded eagerly, "It's true! They even make a great side dish, and a great ingredient in a lot of meals. They're very delicious if you cook them properly."
Still, the fact they had to leave the mushrooms behind did disappoint Kenny slightly, but he understood his decision, "Shame. I would've like to try one if we had the chance." He replied, "But I understand. These don't look to be enough to feed a kid, much less all of us here."
But as he leaned back up, he and Skadi would look ahead to their 2 new options; either check the clearing further, or go on straight ahead. And Bezil would ask them what to do next. Immediately, Skadi raised her hand. "I think we should check the clearing a little bit more." Skadi answered, "After all, I did read your botany book earlier. According to that, there might be more mushrooms dead ahead in there. Best we check for that, just in case."
"Wait, Skadi? You read the botany book as well?" Kenny asked, looking at Skadi in confusion.
"Well... I may have sneaked a peek while you guys were inspecting the plants." The Valaismon smiled a little sheepishly. "But anyways, best we check the clearing a little bit more. Maybe we'll find some more food there, just in case." Would Bezil be happy that Skadi was secretly snooping on him earlier? Probably not, but Skadi was
"Yeah. Maybe ask next time before you start getting nosy, Skadi?" He told her, "But, yeah. Skadi's right. The clearing may have a little bit more food there. Let's check it." With that, Kenny and Skadi would explore the clearing a little bit more, Bezil being expected to follow them as well. They would look around for any possible food, objects, or even wild Digimon ready to show up and strike them down. Things were pretty calm... for now.

Unfortunately, Skadi's words is untrue. If by "more" that she meant is just one, then that's the only thing that they'll find mushroom wise in this clearing. This is due to the fact that the areas shifting over day by day. The wall of greens are unfortunately always changes day by day... and that's why there are no "exact location", thus there are no map in the book at all.
As they go forward, they'll see that the path branched into two... one with a different looking mushroom under a tree, another with greener grass, but seem leading to different area, a darker one. It seems that visibility will be an issue on this route.
Speaking of which, there are some of the Acroberries here once again... but like the rest it doesn't seem that they're ripe enough. It's truly an off season. There are also tree stumps but these doesn't seem to be anything special...
Or is it?
Either way, there are three edibles here, or at least ones that they know for sure.

While Bezil was reading the book intently for knowledge of the berries, he didn't notice Skadi reading over his shoulder. So he didn't really register her next actions in collecting the berries.
Next up, it seemed that Skadi wanted to check the rest of the clearing. "Yeah, I agree. We don't want to find out that we missed out on anything important after all!" the Gumdramon said, but then remembered his parents' lesson in never to deal in absolutes. "But, we still have to make good time though, so we shouldn't try and unearth every pebble we find, eheh..." he added as an afterthought.
Bezil didn't mind that Skadi had been reading over his shoulder. In fact he smiled at her. "That's okay, knowledge is best shared after all." he said, then suddenly realized that he was starting to sound like both of his parents more and more by the minute, with their little advice and proverbs. That made him blush a little.
The path ahead branched into two. One that led to a different kind of mushroom, the other on a path of darker grass, where visibility was low. Bezil's decision was made quickly.
"I think we should look at that mushroom." the furred Gumdramon said. "It could help us or harm us, but we won't know until we examine it. And I think once we move ahead we might not be able to come back for it if we need it."
He hoped this reasoning was fine with Kenny and Skadi too. So far he knew there was three types of edibles here. Acuberries, Digimushrooms, and this new plant. Bezil would try and look through his botany book for the entry that would tell them about it.

Bezil was right, in a way; while (technically) there was no time limit for the mission at hand, it wasn't necessary to squander their own time or energy on checking every nook and cranny, especially if it would constantly turn out barren. It was a good thing to keep in mind, all things considered, and Kenny and Skadi nodded in acknowledgement to Bezil's words, while Skadi secretly stored the unripe Acoberries in her wool.
Although thankfully, Bezil was actually quite happy to hear Skadi took the time to read the Gumdramon's book, but the blush apparent on his face, for reasons only God, Buddha and Arceus knew, did make Skadi fight to stifle her giggles quite a bit. Even Kenny chuckled a little at the Gumdramon's embarrassment, with a friendly smile on his face. A little levity didn't exactly hurt, after all.
Unfortunately, their searches didn't exactly bear much fruit. Only one large mushroom was present, again, not enough to feed the group, along with more unripe acoberries. Skadi's face fell in disappointment, her efforts feeling like they went to bust, while Kenny went over to pat her on the head to cheer her up. "It's OK, Skadi. But Bezil's right; we can't just check for everything. Best we try to focus on the objective first and foremost rather, OK? We'll make sure we complete this mission yet. Understood?" Skadi's face lit up a little upon hearing that.
"Understood, Kenny." Skadi proclaimed, lightly pumping a fist optimistically, "You're right. We can't let a single mistake throw us off. I promise you, I'm gonna more than make up for it." She ran over to pick the Digishrooms, to help serve as possible rations just in case, including the singular giant mushroom.
As she did, Kenny just smiled, "Attagirl, Skadi." When she returned, she put the mushrooms into the small empty front pocket of Kenny's bag. They would be pretty useful for later. But for now, it would be best they stock up with what little they had so far.
Looking upon to the 2 branching paths ahead, Bezil opted for the group to examine the mushroom to see if it was useful to them. "Yeah, hopefully it will be useful, just in case." A little pause for a moment, before he continued, turning to his partner, "Actually, Skadi, can you stay put for a moment and keep a lookout for us? Just in case?" A wide grin came upon Skadi's face, ready to make up for her little err earlier.
"Of course! You can count on me, Kenny and Bezil!" She exclaimed to them, as she watched them go off to check the mushrooms. She knew they wouldn't be going too far off from where she stood, and while so far nothing had showed up to screw everything up, it was better to be a little safe rather than very sorry.

The mushroom on the northern end turned out to be different than the one before... what's this? It's basically a Happyshroom. According to the book it releases hormone that could induce happiness. The effect to the recipients varied between those who partake the test. Some said they're happy as if they just ate chocolate, another said they're happy as if they're drunk, another said that they're happy like they just did something that triggers euphoria. However,, it all boils down to the fact that the recipients tends to be more giggly and relaxed... even the spore have this sort of effect if inhaled too much.
...Now, problem being the side effect. It apparently have 25% chance of giving food poisoning that is really bad for the stomach. Some even said that the pain is comparable to pain having your body forcibly reconfigured into an egg. It's a nasty mushroom. However, it looks like that normally people uses this as cigarette filling, to give a bit of happiness kick to tobacco.
But that's not as important as what's next. The path ahead seem to be dry, arid and full of grasses with fading colors. The book said there are no differences between it and the grasses they find prior. It's seem to be same grasses, but this one definitely... less than optimum in growth?
Skadi does not seem to sense much beside there are birds on trees... one just flew in. For some reason, these birds still followed the grid dictates by the "walls" of the labyrinth. Strange at it is, it just flew toward the entrance.

It was moments like this that Bezil realized why Owen had trained him so thoroughly in things like this. Unlike Chosen and their partners, Bezil had no human partner, so he had to do double the thinking by himself to keep up with Kenny and Skadi. Not that he was envious of that in any way, he was just made suddenly more observant of that fact, seeing them confer among each other when all he had was himself. He'd have to be more careful how he trod, at least from this lesson.
After Skadi collected the digishrooms, Bezil prepared to proceed onward. Kenny directed Skadi to keep lookout, which the Gumdramon was glad of. Best cover their flanks while they were researching things.
And so Bezil and Kenny approached the unique northern Mushroom. Bezil scrawled through his botany book to find out that this was in fact a Happyshroom. Bezil initially blanched a little, realizing his parents had told him to keep away from these things as they could become a problem if consumed regularly over time. However... its properties made Bezil realize that it could come in real handy in future, especially if they came up against opposition.
The side effects reinforced Bezil's thoughts. "I think we'd best save this mushroom to present to an enemy." he concluded, looking up at Kenny. "Doesn't seem like it'd be much benefit to us, considering the risks, but... if given to someone in our way..." he let the rest of that sentence remain unspoken.
Upon looking at the path ahead, Bezil noted that the grasses ahead seemed to differ in their quality. Some was lush and green, others were dry, sickly and yellow. This concerned him.
"Perhaps we should stick to standing on the green grasses?" he suggested. While he didn't think it'd be too nasty for stepping on the yellow grass, still, he knew that the test here was to be careful where they treaded. And he knew that green grass was healthy, so, perhaps they would remain healthy as long as they kept to that color?

Like Skadi before her, Kenny had also taken a few glances at the book to see what the mysterious mushroom was, and apparently, it was called a 'happyshroom'. And could anyone blame Bezil for looking a little apprehensive? Unlike the bog-standard Digishrooms, the Happyshroom's effects sounded very troubling at a glance, not too dissimilar to the average magic mushroom. But Bezil had quite the right idea on suggesting it for makeshift ammo, not unlike the acoberries Skadi picked earlier. The Gumdramon didn't even need to finish his sentence; Kenny's mind was already awash with all the crazy possibilities this could bring.
Upon hearing what Bezil had to say, Kenny smiled knowingly at the Gumdramon, "Say no more, Bezil. That mushroom looks like it could some crazy - and dangerous - shit if we use it right." He picked the mushroom out of the ground, before putting in his bag as well, "I'd hate to be the unlucky sap that ends up having this for lunch." All the while, the overhearing Skadi chuckled wiley; she packed a good amount of similar delectable but deadly ammo as well under everyone else's noses. Imagine the complete insanity they now had in store.
With that, it was now time to set off, as Kenny called over to his partner, "Skadi, we're going now! C'mon girl!" The chipper Valaismon didn't hesitate, coming on cue, but her eyes were practically glued on the birds and the grid. This labyrinth was raising a lot of questions, and it was practically a given they probably wouldn't get answered until the very end. Oh well. Nothing much to worry about for now.
The grass ahead, however, did look a little dry, almost a little desert like, to be honest. While Bezil did suggest they walk on the green grass, Kenny was wearing a nice good pair of hiking shoes. His feet were more than likely protected from them (unless the dry looking grass could magically pierce shoes or something), but it probably would be best not to take the risk, giving an understanding nod to Bezil. Skadi, likewise, quickly took the memo, making sure not to step on the grass, but also still be on the lookout for anything probably drawing near.
But as they walked, an odd question came to Kenny's mind. Nothing major, mind you, but it was something eating away on his mind. Hoping to make chitchat, and probably to clear things up, he turned to the furry Gumdramon, "Hey Bezil, just wondering: can't you actually fly over the grass just to be safe? No offence, I'm just wondering." He asked him. Granted, Kenny never actually saw Bezil fly before, but it was best to clear things up, just in case.

The grass, whether walked on or not, would have no difference, pretty much. These are apparently just normal grasses, but one that most likely become a hint of what one have in store for them. When they goes through it, they'll eventually ends at a huge gate-like structure, made out of branches.
"Looks like you have reached the first trial," Hikaru's voice rang from the D-Nexus "I can't exactly tell you what's ahead, I'll only tell that you can't force your way out of this. Inside is a vast area, it's less likely to be lost there, but it'll still be a huge challenge to find your way out. Once you passed the trial inside, both the escape route and the route toward next trial will be unlocked. Now up to what do you want to do... but once you enter, you cannot get out until you finished everything.
Do you want to return to previous spot perhaps? Or do you want to g on ahead and challenge it?"
...There are no smell of Digimon there. There are definitely some birds and fishes, but that's pretty much a standard fare. There are sounds of stream, but that's about it. If they touched the gate, they would be immediately transported in, that's what the book said... "rudely", it adds. So only proceed if they're ready, otherwise they might find it hard to go through.

Bezil liked this way of thinking. Using the fruits of the land with the intention of molding them to their advantage seemed like exactly the sort of thing a talented recon soldier would do. And as the son of one, he thought this could lead to a crafty moment of glory in future.
Once that was done, Bezil was asked if he could simply fly over the patches of dry grass. "Well, yeah I can, just I don't wanna leave you guys isolated in case something bad happens." the Gumdramon explained.
Then they were faced with an instantly-forming gate of branches and leaves. Hikaru informed them over the comm. that this would be the gate to their first trial. Bezil gulped when he heard the sound of running water. While yes, he could swim with diving gear, if he was denied the use of that, he'd sink like a stone and drown, thanks to the weighted hammer on his tail.
But, he was determined to pass this trial. And with Kenny and Skadi here, if any water hazards were around, he hoped they could fish him out in time.
"Well, I think we're ready to continue." Bezil declared, then turned to Kenny and Skadi. "What about you guys? Ready to keep a clear head and face whatever we need to next up?"

Truth be told, Kenny wasn't exactly a master wordsmith, and admittedly he could have worded that question a little better, but Bezil's response was nice at least. In response, Kenny just smiled at the pluck Gumdramon and admitted "Good point. Thank you." At least he knew that, with Bezil dedicated to sticking with them, thick and thin, they knew that they were in good hands at this point.
Thankfully, the grass was generally harmless, if a little dry to the touch, if anything. But their arrival to the giant branch gate was followed by Hikaru briefly describing the challenge ahead of them. And the only thing they could hear apart from that was the stream. But there was no doubt that the feeling of uncertainty was crawling up on them. And even when Skadi pet Bezil's back to help calm his nerves, even she had to admit that she was feeling nervous herself.
But as for Kenny? Well, he was starting to take deep breaths to keep himself calm, but he could feel himself trembling. For you see, the last time around he and Skadi brushed with danger, during Golden Week, they were really cutting it close, and managed to escape by a hair because the others, including the 'attackers', were willing to co-operate with them. Whoever, or whatever, laid on the other side, probably wouldn't be as willing. He wasn't a pro swimmer
Still, no matter what, neither was determined to let anyone down today. Not Yuuki, not Hikaru, not Bezil, not anybody! And as Bezil addressed them, Kenny nodded a bit, his nervousness obscured by a confident smile, "Yep! I'm ready when you are, buddy!"
"Rest assured, Bezil, we won't let you down!" She reassured the budding fluffy dragon, "We'll have your back every step of the way!" And with that, they would approach the gate, with a reinforced sense of confidence inside of them. No matter what the challenge was ready to throw at them, they were ready to take it on, head first. After all, what members of KIZNA were they if they just ran away from even the slightest bit of danger?
