Great Lessons in Unlikely Places [Kiwimon and Alraumon]

Was it actually even possible to have 2 homes? Well, as Kenny and Skadi had learned relatively quickly, yes it was. Being members of the prestigious team in question, KIZNA, had a lot of perks to it's name, including a room in the Sanctuarium Unionis to call their own. And they really made it their own, what with posters lining the room, and a fair few Monster Hunter figures laying around the place, sitting like mini trophies on display, and whatnot.
But today, they were going for a nice walk around in the city in question. They always made a point to wear the matching silk scarves Persephone made for them every time they visited this place. Those scarves felt really nice and smooth on the skin, giving them a calming and relaxing feeling. And Skadi just loved to fidget with the fringe like a cat to catnip. It was all good.
But there was one slight problem: They hadn't explored the entirely of Ys just yet. This big bustling city had still plenty of surprises held up their sleeve. And who knows, maybe they would pass by some other KIZNA acquaintances that day. For now, they were going around, Odin by their side for a bit of a tour to show him around. And he basically lapped it all up, happily looking at all the structures of this modern ancient city.
"Holy shit, guys. You didn't tell me Ys would be this impressive." Odin said, finally turning back to Kenny and Skadi while following him. Kenny just nodded and smiled at him.
"Heh. Glad you enjoy it, pal." He replied, before directing his gaze back to the city, "I remember when Ryouta and Valt showed us around the city for the first time. It was so awe-inspiring."
Odin tilted his head in confusion, "Who's Ryouta?"
"Only a friend. A really good friend." Kenny winked at him. Best he save his trainer for a surprise. For now, they would let the tour continue, letting him get the feel for this place in any way he could.

The brown earth stretched as far as the eye could see. Normally one wouldn’t explore the farmlands so extensively, but this route through the farmlands was by far one of the most popular. It was the scenic route, so to speak. The farmlands did evoke a certain image of lazy summer days, especially popular to Japanese areas. The walking route was slightly heightened from the farmfields themselves, giving you a view of the fertile expanses of Ys. The sounds of a tram zipped by for a second, as a closeby tram-line was made over the farm fields. Together, up there with the tram rails in the sky, were glowing orbs that provided artificial sunlight which plants could absorb. They idly hung like an extra sun to shine upon the ground and sky, providing the shining outline of daylight in this dark place.
Ys Farm fields It always starts with sibling bickering...
Among the brown ground, were three figures chatting… no, arguing about something. One piped up. “I’ll be coding all of the ground to check it’s status and making everything hurry up! If i just play my music and focus, it’ll be fine!”The Kokuwamon lacked completely in noteworthy features. Being dark grey like any of the robotic bug digimon, grey claspers and grey horns, which sparked with weak electricity. He reflected the light like any polished metal would, having a notable sheen over him. “Excuse me? Do i need to remind you it’s -me- who makes the plants actually grow and settle in the dirt once you’re done preparing it?! My music will best allow these plants to actually grow so we can harvest them later!” The Alraumon was also your everyday Alraumon, her lilac flower taking in the light of the artefact to show off it’s soft texture and porous code structure. It looked almost fuzzy. Lastly, there was a Kiwimon. For whatever reason, rather than voice his concerns to the other two, he was gesturing wildly and stepping around, stomping on the dirt with his feet, shaking his metal beaked head. Alraumon turned to him and snapped “C’mon, bro! You’re just here to help, at least take your sister’s side!”The Kiwimon no less had an irritated expression on his face, pecking at what appeared to be his sister as he tried to use his beak to touch their choice of music player, a speaker with some controls on it’s side. The other two pushed him back, as they clearly didn’t want his music.

It was hard for Kenny, Skadi and Odin to not be impressed by the time they reached the farmlands, Kenny because it was one of the Digital World's many surprises, and Skadi and Odin because of just how genius it all was. The young man whistled in amazement as he took on the sights, the sounds, and the smell of the fresh morning-like air, "Man, talk about efficiency here. I didn't know how big those farmlands could be."
Skadi, too, was gazing at the farmlands, and all the ungodly amount of crops growing there, "Those crops look like they could feed an entire continent, never mind the city!" She added. She felt a sense of tranquillity as the winds blew her wool, itself gently swaying in the wind.
As for Odin? Well, even the giant ostrich couldn't help but grin,"In all my years, and all my deliveries, I never thought I'd come across farmlands as impressive as this." He chuckled in amusement, "Maybe I could set up a permanent home here." He craned his neck down to his buddy, and waved to grab his attention, "Hey, when you go on your little training mission, mind if I crash in your room for a bit until you get back?"
Is that even allowed? Kenny thought to himself briefly. He didn't know whenever that was against the rules, so he just shrugged, "Maybe. I better ask Yuuki first. I don't think he'd be happy suddenly seeing a random stranger in our room, especially because I don't think he really knows who you are just yet." He explained, making the Peckmon droop a little in disappointment.
Their brief elation was interrupted by the sounds of loud bickering from a group of nearby Digimon, quickly catching the three's attention as they did; consisting of a Kokuwamon, a robotic stag, an Alraumon, a plant Digimon not too dissimilar to the ones back in the Golden Week incident, and a Kiwimon, a weird plant-bird amalgamation, all about roughly the same size as one another. Thankfully, from what it sounded like so far, the 'violence' was limited to a mere shouting match and brief pushes and shoves between one another over the speaker.
But, as members of KIZNA, who often helped to chip in to keep the city in order, Kenny and Skadi weren't exactly going to stand idly by while all this was going on; instead, the tamer just turned to Skadi, "Should we go help them?" That was met with a brief nod by the Valaismon, "That's all I needed to hear, buddy. Let's go." With that, the tamer and his partner Digimon would set off to confront the 3 bickering Digimon. Odin trotted closely behind, keeping pace to not outspeed the two.
As they got nearby, Kenny waved to the 3 bickering Digimon in question, "Hey!" He called out to them in a bid to grab their attention, "Is their a problem here, you guys?" His KIZNA badge glistened under the artificial lights as he approached the squabblers in question.
Skadi followed close-by, adding, "Do you guys need any help? Because if so, we'd be more than happy to." Odin didn't say anything himself, but he just nodded in agreement at them. Honestly, while a full scale fight seemed more than unlikely, neither were willing to take the risk. They would try to help defuse the situation in any way they possibly could.

The first thing to happen to the bickering three worth noticing were three others approaching. The three approaching them were a Human, a tamer no doubt, a goat like digimon and the ostrich like peckmon. The three had irritated expressions. Alraumon made sure to soften her expression upon looking at the three. Kokuwamon opened his mouth “Ni-” he didn’t manage to finish that statement before alraumon stuffed some vines and flowers in his mouth. He flailed in anger, but Alraumon continued. “We’re also members of team KIZNA, nice to meet you!”
“And you don’t need to worry about us! We’re just supposed to be sowing this field and using it for our plants.” She had her own little badge, although it was affixed to a little pouch of seeds she had. She continued on with a pleasant smile, but as she spoke, she looked out to the field and realised they had gotten nowhere.
Kokuwamon took the flower out of his mouth and spoke in his chance. “And we haven’t gotten anywhere, because SOME PEOPLE have no taste in good music that help you work!”
The look he had to both of them held some animosity, but the two returned their animosity in turn, the three exchanging what seemed to be lightning bolts. The three hadn’t even taken the time to introduce themselves because of their petty argument...

Even when trying to polity introduce themselves to the trio in question, their bickering would quickly spill over into it, as indicated by Alraumon not giving Kokuwamon the time of day by stuffing plants into his mouth and taking over, revealing the trio to be members of KIZNA, Despite proclaiming there was nothing to worry about, it was pretty clear that was far from the truth; the field was practically barren as far as the eye can see.
According to Kokuwamon, the reasoning behind that was that nobody could decide on the music, glaring at his 'companions', who were all too happy to repay the behaviour. Immediately, before either Kenny or Odin could stop her, Skadi had pushed her way over to the front and in-between Aluraumon, Kiwimon and Kokuwamon, arms outstretched and yelling "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Break it up, you's three! Break it up! You're not gonna get anywhere fast if you keep fighting like this! It's just a little bit of music!"
Kenny nodded in agreement, as he went closer to the three squabbling Digimon, while pulling Skadi away by the elbows. "Sorry about that, but she's right." He added, "You guys haven't exactly gotten much, if anything, done today, haven't you?" With his hand, he gestured the squabblers to look at the barren fields, "Honestly, I think you guys need a little help in teamwork today. And we'll be happy to help anyway we can, right guys?" The 2 other Digimon that accompanied Kenny grinned and nodded in agreement to Kenny's statement.
Although, there was one glaring detail that needed to be addressed here, "Unfortunately, I haven't exactly dabbled in botany for a long time, if at all." He chuckled, rubbing the back in his neck, "But I'll try to chip in as much as I can, help make up for lost time and all that. How's that sound?" Hopefully, that proposition would help to both patch up their differences, and get things done before the end of the day.
"Oh yeah, I forgot to introduce ourselves." He continued with a friendly smile, before gesturing to the accompanying Digimon, "I'm Kenny, that's my partner Skadi the Valaismon, and this is Odin, my friend." Odin gave a little wave of the wing and another grin, while Skadi's wave was much more enthusiastic.
"Nice to meet you's three!" She bleated to them.

They were told off for bickering just about music, and while for a moment, they wanted to lash out, Kiwimon realized that Skadi was very much right. Before Kokuwamon could pipe up again, he placed one of his feet on the back of Kokuwamon’s head, pushing the metallic beetle face first into the dirt with surprising efficiency. Even Alraumon was surprised at the actions of her twin brother, seeing their third companion eat dirt like that.
Two parts hilarious, one part making obvious what was going down, Alraumon sighed. “You’re right… And wow, how rude of us. We haven’t even introduced ourselves either since we were so caught in our bickering… I’m Alraumon. Kiwimon here is my twin brother, but he can’t talk.”
The Kiwimon nodded with what she said. The little Chibikiwimon at his feet chirped and bounced though at the mention of Kiwimon’s name. Kiwimon’s head bounced a bit with a happy expression, as he let his foot off of Kokuwamon. Despite the earlier display, Alraumon did help Kokuwamon up. “And this here-”
“I’m Kokuwamon, the Brains and the moneymak-” And then Kiwimon pushed his face into the dirt again, a satisfied expression on his face. Alraumon huffed at her twin brother. “Oh that wasn’t necessary! Be a little nice to him, he does great sales for us!”
Kiwimon let out a sheepish shrug, having a rather impish expression on him. Alraumon sighed and smiled at the three. “We’d love to take your help! Because… yes, we do have a lot of work to still do.”
A wire from Kokuwamon’s body slowly crept it’s way to the music player. Alraumon’s purple flower on her head got a wave of yellow colour over it, moving from the middle to the outer ring, as a small yellow flower sprouted in the way of the cable. A small fizzing electrical noise sounded as the wire touched the flower. Alraumon smiled towards their three new friends. “How about you three choose the music? After all, you did offer to help with our work.”
Kiwimon nodded in acknowledgement, and Kokuwamon, slowly standing up, grunted. “Fine, only to keep potential customers happy. The customer is always right, after all.”

Clearly, there was no love lost between the three gardening Rookie Digimon. Kenny flinched a little bit in surprise as he and the other 2 watched Kiwimon effortlessly shove Kokuwamon into the dirt like it was nothing. Considering Kokuwamon was basically a walking talking large piece of metal, either Kiwimon was a little too strong for a Rookie level, or the metallic bug was a little on the light side. Either way, the signs were clear.
Apart from that, however, the introduction went surprisingly swimmingly (apart from the second face smashing in a row for poor Kokuwamon), and Skadi couldn't exactly help but feel a little giddy watching the happy bouncing ChibiKiwimon, walking over to give one of them a light, gentle pet. And thankfully, Alraumon was all too happy to take the three on board.
"Yeah, like I said, we'd be more than happy to help you guys." Kenny smiled at the three, while Skadi and Odin nodded eagerly in turn, "Just what do you need us to do anyway-" He was quickly cut off as his eyes glanced towards Kokuwamon trying, and failing, to touch the music player, all courtesy of Alraumon, content to let them choose instead. "Actually, how about we try to focus on the job at hand, honestly? I'm not exactly picky with music myself."
"Maybe we could chat while we work instead?" Skadi suggested, "It always seems to make work go faster, for us at least. We could even take the time to learn about each other properly as well. Win-win." Granted, it wasn't exactly a one-size-fits-all solution, but hey, at least it wasn't a whole life-or-death situation they were dealing with here.
If that was all settled then, it was time to figure out who did which. Odin was first to step up to the three as he explained, "I can help rake the soil with my bare claws. And Kenny and Skadi can help with planting and watering as well. Just tell us what we need to do, exactly."

Alraumon and Kiwimon gave Kokuwamon a chance to get up and recover himself now that they were done trying with the music. Skadi suggested chatting, which all three of them gave a rather indifferent nod to. They didn’t mind, at the very least! “Yeah! It’s always fine to get to know each other. We all have a lot of work to do.”
“After all, with all this artificial sunlight around, every second the plants could grow, so every second we wait is a second wasted.” Kokuwamon said almost sagely. In truth he just wanted to make profits, and that required products, but he was also definitely not wrong… Kiwimon even nodded in agreement, impatient to get started, especially since there wasn’t any activity holding them back right now.
Kokuwamon was the first to come with a task. He started rummaging in one of the containers they had with them, supplies to help set up their farm. Kokuwamon pulled out relays, little metallic wireless data receiver and senders with probes to be placed in the ground with. “Alraumon, you get to your speciality, i need to set up the field. If any of you could help me by sticking these relays in the dirt every 50 feet and not an inch more or less!, that’d be a great help!”
“Let them play it safe, nobody knows how to measure 50 feet perfectly time and time again. Every 40ish yards should be fine.” Alraumon sighed while Kokuwamon huffed. She gave him a stern look as he tries to be uncompromising, giving her a bit of an annoyed look back, which she seemed to shy away from a bit, not dealing too well with it now.
“But the efficient use of the relays!” Kokuwamon complained about efficiency for only a short second before accepting that the work needed to be done anyway, his posture slacking downwards a bit in defeat. Alraumon wiped her forehead as it seems she had won it out once again, albeit just barely. Kokuwamon worked himself up to a comfortable stance again, and put on his money winning smile and appreciative tone. “Very well! any amount of effort is a great help either way! your services are appreciated!”
“Good job, Kokuwamon!" Although Alraumon had no doubts he just wanted to ensure that Kenny, Skadi & Odin would be demanding as little compensation as possible, she still felt he did well. Kokuwamon started grabbing some crates and setting up little computers and screens on them, so he could start preparing to use his coding skills to their benefit. Alraumon turned to the people helping them herself now, smiling and starting to explain her task.
"Now, if anyone wants to help me, we want to work a little water into the soil’s surface first. Usually, this isn’t necessary, but these little artificial suns have dried out the top of the earth a bit… We have some buckets and there’s some water by the edge of the farm ground. If you could just toss around some water, just at random, and then stamp on the ground a bit, that’d help a lot. Don’t let a single spot get too soaked though!” She smiled and pointed towards the water, showing the stream of water that ran along the side of the field between the raised ground that separates this part of the farmland from another part. She herself turned to the land before them, waves of blue colour pulsing through her purple flower on her head. Kiwimon ran up to a blue flower that was created on the ground by Alraumon’s ability. He started poking at it with his beak, while the Chibikiwimon jumped on another blue flower created by Alraumon. Kiwimon’s mask became blue-tinted and much smoother, and the same happened to the ChibiKiwimon’s masks. Kiwimon pointed his beak upwards, and out of his mouth came a small fountain of water spraying around, falling to the ground to make it slightly more moist. The Chibikiwimon ran to an especially dry spot of the ground, before making a little hop, face-planting straight into the ground, their beak making them stuck like a little nail. There was a moment’s pause as they forgot what they were doing, before the burst with a small explosion of water, wetting the earth around them. They looked dull after that little explosion, a little darker, colour drained from them. With a little effort, they popped their beak out of the hole and started walking back to a blue flower, dizzy and walking in a bit of a swaying pattern.

Welp, after everything looked to be said and done, it was now time to get to work planting the crops. And already, it seemed things were going smoothly. Well, mostly smoothly; there was that little hubbub about arranging the relays but thankfully, it didn't really take much effort for that to be resolved so quickly. So far, so good! Things were already looking up!
Besides, trying to hit those exact measurements down would probably be a good one-way ticket to a blistering headache.
Regardless, once that was all sorted, the group would turn to listen to Alraumon's instructions as best as they could; simply water the soil. However, Skadi's attention quickly found herself attracted to one of the ChibiKiwimon, willingly obeying the master Kiwimon's commands to a T as he instructed it to water the flower in a rather... unique way. Still, it didn't stop her from applauding the sight happily, and needless to say, that didn't escape the other two's attention, who couldn't help but smile at the sight initially...
Until she realised that the ChibiKiwimon had gotten itself hurt and dizzy from that little watershow. Kenny found himself wincing a little, and even the normally hardy Odin pulled at the neck of his scarf nervously. Quickly, she ran up to the tiny masked chick, scooping it up within her arms and bringing it back to Kiwimon, before gently putting them back next to the flightless bird's feet, with a little complimentary pat on the head.
"That's OK, little buddy, you did a good job back there!" She complimented, before walking back to grab one of the buckets (but not before Kenny pat her on the head as well as she passed by), and scooping up some water from the stream Alraumon pointed at. Likewise, Kenny and Odin would do the same, themselves, and they would get to work. Each would claim at least 1/3rd of the area to sprinkle the water within, ensuring that every part of the soil would get their fare share of water, often refilling the buckets as needed
As they worked on sprinkling the water, Kenny turned to Alraumon, "So, uh, guys, what brought you to Ys in the first place? I;m just wondering" He asked with a genuine interest in his tone.

Well, the work had started. There were a copious amount of headpats to go around at first, but after the headpats were done, the work was continuing. Alraumon had the sweetest smile at seeing Skadi compliment the Cute little Chibikiwimon. Kiwimon himself meanwhile rolled his eyes with a little smile as he continued watering the area. Kokuwamon has just an incredulous expression of irritation. Waste. Of. time. He seethed for a bit before calming himself down.
Another chibikiwimon made a little water explosion and started a dizzy walk back to the water flower. Alraumon smiled at it, giving it a quick pat before letting it walk back to the blue flower to rest “You don’t need to worry about the little guys, they’re not actually hurting themselves, They just get a little tired after doing their best. They’re quick to perk up though, you just need to give them twenty seconds or so.”
Kiwimon continued watering the area, and everyone was just getting their water all around the place. Kokuwamon still needed a little help with the relays, but whenever a relay would be set, Kokuwamon would start doing his magical code thing on a little tech installation. Digicode started occupying the entire relay and it started affecting the environment around it. With the press of a button, Kokuwamon could change the colour of the dirt and make it suddenly change in how hard it was. He was changing it constantly, trying to figure things out and measuring the strength of the relays.
As Kenny spoke, Kiwimon look in his direction, accidentally spraying a bit of water over the poor boy! Kiwimon quickly looked another way and disabled the water his beak was spraying, having a sheepish expression on him. He actually thought it was rather funny, but, he didn’t show that. Alraumon was a bit surprised too, putting one of her claws in front of her mouth in surprise. “Oh my! Are you alright? He didn’t mean to do that!”

Skadi hadn't really paid any heed to either Kiwimon or Kokuwamon's reactions. But mainly because that the ChibiKiwimon had already inadvertently stolen the lion's share of her attention from those two to them. At least, until Alraumon would clear some facts up about them. A sheepish (ha) grin showed on the Valaismon's face, "Sorry about that, Alraumon." She said, giving a wry shrug rowards her, "I just thought these guys were actually hurting and exhausting themselves when they do that thing they do."
"Ah, don't worry about it, Skadi, you're not psychic." Kenny shot her a reassuring glance before sprinkling some more of the water over the soil, "Honest to God, I wish I was psychic myself. It would save the both of us a whole world of trouble, if you ask me." It was a weird thought to deal with. How many problems or gaffes could be solved in a matter of moments just by literally reading somebody's mind? That he wouldn't end up saying or doing something dumb just because he was simply out of the loop?
How was that for an out-of-nowhere shower thought?
Still, the three would continue to do their job, but Kenny would find himself freezing up for a brief moment in surprise as Digicode started to coat the soil and the soil itself (looking like it was) changing itself, no help needed. Even in more seemingly mundane tasks like this, it always felt like the Digital World was still finding ways to surprise him. He shot a glance over to the rest of the Digimon, all of them themselves just taking it in like it was nothing. Another thought would start to brew inside him.
Was this was what it was like to be the alien himself? Growing up, along with his interest in monsters, he always convinced himself that aliens were these otherworldly creatures. Yet here he was. He was the alien. He was the alien not fully used to the culture of the civilisation that these creatures, no, people, called home. To them, everything was perfectly natural. A masked kiwi that could summon baby kiwis the size of a stress ball on a whim. The massive civilisations they could maintain. The varieties of shapes and sizes that these people came in, yet nobody seemed to mind all too much.
It was just a weird thought that boiled within his head. Digimon weren't just monsters and creatures. They were living, breathing people, just like him. They had hobbies. Interests. And finding himself in a more mundane tasks with these people just felt... oddly rewarding to him, y'know?
Of course, the last thing he expected to break him out of his thoughts was a sudden splash of water spraying him on his chest and soaking his shirt, forcing him to stumble back with a surprised and shocked look on her face, dropping his own empty bucket onto the floor. His eyes quickly darted everywhere including Odin quietly tugging on his scarf nervously, to Kiwimon's awkward glance, to Alraumon vocalising her concerns, and finally to Skadi... covering her mouth and fighting to stifle her giggles.
It didn't work.
Just a few moments later, her giggles exploded into full on pointing and laughing at her tamer, uncontrollably to boot, and it just wouldn't stop. Even when she fell onto the floor, her legs and feet kicking wildly in the air. And slowly, a mischievous smirk crawled among Kenny's face as he reached down to his buckets, keeping his eyes on the Valaismon all the while.
"Oh, you think this is funny, huh?" A low, fake menacing tone dripped from his voice like the water on his shirt, as he slowly edged himself towards the lake once more, before leaning down, filling the bucket, getting back up and slowly approaching his partner, all with a faux-menacing smirk on his face, "Well, let's see how you like this!"
So enveloped she was in her laughter, she failed to notice any of this until it was too late, and a huge surge of water coated the Valaismon in mere moments. She slowly got back up once more, this time with a determined glint on her face, as her wool sagged from the weight of the water itself,
"You're so dead."
Even with the sag, Skadi didn't hesitate to pick up her bucket once more and fill it up, before rushing back and tossing it wildly. While she was aiming to hit Kenny (and spoiler alert: she did, the man futilely trying to stave it off by cowering and covering himself with his hands), had Kiwimon and Alraumon got caught up within the crossfire...
Well, no prizes for guessing the results.
