Sophie James was glad to be back in the helm with AEGIS. After her extended break following the events of New Year's, she had gained much in the way of training for the trying times ahead. Thanks to the time difference between Earth and the Digital World, while she had spent 5 months away, that was more accurately 35 months in which she had studied and trained hard as a chosen and leader. Now she was ready to get back in action.
She was also glad to meet more members of AEGIS that were now present. And, for probably the first time, she had had the chance to meet up with John and Casameir. After a few conversations in getting to know them, Sophie had noted that John had not yet obtained his Armor Ultimate level. This concerned her, as AEGIS had been caught out badly that night in Scramble Crossing, with few of their number able to armor digivolve and defend the human world against a digital incursion. Thus she came up with a suggestion, that they go to the digital world and try to find the digimental that would make John and Casameir the most effective they could be.
Thus, one day, Sophie would invite them to board a Trailmon in the Shibuya Terminal, where they would ride to Terminus City, and from there, change trains to board one going to Rosewood. It would be an overnight trip, so Sophie and Lantis spent most of the ride asleep, but they'd try to get to know John and Casameir on the way.
Eventually, the morning light shone through the windows of the train, flashes of orange through green as the heavy canopy blocked most of the sunrise from hitting them directly. But the announcement through the near empty carriage was that they would be arriving in the town of Rosewood in about half an hour.
"Ah... perfect timing." Sophie said, before yawning. "Excuse me for a moment... just need some coffee. Would you guys like some too?"
"Just tea for me thanks, never really liked coffee." Lantis said, also yawning, the Leomon giving a flashy example of just how big and sharp his teeth were. Sophie disappeared briefly into the refreshments car, then returned with whatever beverages were requested.
"Now, John, Casameir, Lantis. Just to recap... an ally of ours has been exploring the forest here recently, and he let it go down the grapevine to us that there might be something of value to us in AEGIS if we were to find it." Sophie said, after a gulp of some fresh coffee. "The individual in question is Bezil the Gumdramon, from KIZNA. He's pretty much a family friend that hasn't done us wrong in the past, so, basically, he's agreed to meet up with us in Rosewood and be our guide to some ruins in the forest. Admittedly, I haven't met him before, but I hear from others that he's trustworthy and reliable, so just gotta take their word on that."
"Still though. I wonder how he knows specifically that it'll assist AEGIS?" Lantis asked, sipping his tea.
"Keyword there, Lan, "might."" Sophie reminded her partner. She turned back to John. "The story he told us, basically, he knows there's a ruin out there, but doesn't want to go alone. So he jingled some bells for favours and eventually came to ask us over Tamernet. I thought it'd be a great opportunity for us in several ways. Firstly, to gain rapport in the digital world for us in AEGIS. Secondly, to practice working together on field operations where necessary. And thirdly, there just might be something of use to us in the mix. So, that's pretty much why we're here."
She looked between John and Casameir with enthusiasm. "Would that be alright with you two?" she asked.

Both John and Casimeir felt ecstatic to be asked to join Sophie and Lantis on an adventure. Even though they were initially hired by Sophie to join AEGIS, the pair had spent scarce time around the founder. At least now they could remedy that and get to truly know them. So, of course, the human and the Digimon jumped at the invitation.
John and his partner made sure to pack necessary supplies into their Infini-Store device. John's laptop bag, of course. Never knew when one could need access to a computer in the Digital World. Cooking supplies, plenty of water, and a basic first-aid kit.
The train ride was definitely drawn-out. John and his partner had no complaints, though. They thoroughly enjoyed train rides. They always brought back fond memories for John from when he would visit family in New York and get to ride the subway. But the two did need rest. And like their friends, they made the decision to get some shuteye.
The dancing morning light caused John and Casimeir to stir when it tickled their closed eyelids. The pair stretched simultaneously, and yawned. It was an adorable moment. The mention of coffee was made to the collective.
"None for us, thanks," John respectfully declined. "I like it occasionally, so I try not to drink much of it."
Prior to accepting Sophie's offer to join her today, the details on the adventure were fuzzy at best. It didn't really concern the Partnered pair as to why Sophie asked them to accompany her and Lantis. But now, their boss offered more details.
John and Casimeir listened dutifully. They each mulled over what she had said in her short briefing. Thankfully the pair wouldn't even have to put in much thought when Sophie asked if this adventure suited them.
The two grinned. "Of course it's alright, Sophie," John assured. "Exploring some Digital World ruins sounds exciting."
"Yeah," Casimeir added, "And this gives us a chance to help some Digimon while we get to know you better as friends."

Sophie noted that John brought along an infini-store, and was rather glad of that. She internally admonished herself for not thinking to do the same. Honestly, she should be better prepared for doing fieldwork, but, that's one of the reasons why she was here - to learn. At least, she had learned a little about suitable equipment to wear on a hike through an unknown forest, and was dressed in cargo pants, a jacket, boots and had emergency supplies in her pockets.
Once they were awake, John declined the offer of coffee. Sophie nodded and smiled. "Alright, orange juice it is." she said, not wanting for them to go completely dry just yet. She'd return with cups of fruit juice for the others.
After she made her briefing, she sipped her coffee as they entered the outskirts of Rosewood. It was truly a beautiful town - many buildings carved into the giant trees that formed the vast Server Woods. Flowers of every color grew along the avenues that had been cleared around the new city of the East. And Rookie and Champion digimon were seen going about their daily businesses, even if it meant waiting with impatient expressions at the railroad crossings that covered the town as they waited for them to pass.
Eventually, they arrived at Rosewood Station. It was a pretty place - two platforms, each side decorated with fresh flowers in welcome of visitors and those returning home. Lantis whistled, impressed. "They sure went all out in making this place didn't they?" he asked.
Eventually, the Trailmon came to a stop, and the doors opened. Sophie and Lantis disembarked, waited for John and Casameir to do the same, then took a look around.
"Heya!" a voice quickly greeted them. Sophie turned to see a small digimon approaching them. He was covered in purple and white fur, wore a red vest, had yellow wings, and a hammer for a tail. This must be him.
"Hi there. You must be Bezil, right?" she asked.
"Yep, that's me!" Bezil said, grinning in response. Sophie noted he spoke with an Australian accent for some reason, but chose not to go any further into that. "And you must be the AEGIS party, right?"
"Indeed, we are." Lantis answered in a gentle voice. "I'm Lantis, this is my partner Sophie, and these are our colleagues, John and Casameir."
"Awesome, glad to meet you all." Bezil said, offering a pawshake to those that accepted. "So then... you guys ready to move out? The sooner we head off, the sooner we can return. It's about a 2 hour's walk to the place."
Sophie noted he was discreet and was glad of it. "Sure, that suits us, we slept on the way here." she said.
"Okay, great. I just woke up too, so, looks like we're all set." he said. Lantis raised an eyebrow about how abrupt he was, but thankfully Bezil noted this and explained. "It'd be best if we got back to Rosewood before dark, this forest can get pretty nasty when the sun's down. I mean, we should be fine if it came to that, but, I'm sure the lot of us would be happier if we got back here while there was sunlight, right?"
"Ah, indeed." Lantis said. He noted other digimon were walking past them, curious expressions on their side-glancing eyes. That was also probably a reason why Bezil wanted to rush things, so he wouldn't be overheard by the wrong people.
"You had breakfast?" he asked, inquisitively.
"No, but we've got some energy muesli bars we could eat on the way." Sophie said. There wasn't really enough time on the Trailmon for them to serve a full breakfast, or so it was explained.
Bezil nodded, then waited for the okay from John and Casameir before going on the road.

Knowing that a potentially arduous trek through the woods would be made, John also made sure to dress accordingly. He was sporting a decent pair of hiking boots with good tread on them. Also on his person was some khaki cargo pants and a light teal t-shirt. White socks were hiked up to his lower thighs.
John and Casimeir had been to the Server Woods once before; on an adventure to help rescue Satoshi's Digimon, who was a little Tsunemon at the time. Since then, they never really visited. With the span of time being so great, their eyes sparkled at the sight of how the town appeared compared to then.
"Woah," the man breathed. "It's so beautiful!"
The corners of Casimeir's lips upturned slightly. "They really spruced up the place."
Coming back to the Digital World was helping to rekindle an old dream of theirs. Some time ago, they wanted to become heroes of the Digital World and the Human World. But sadly, a lot of their attention had been drawn to the latter. What with all of the random portals wreaking near-chaos in the Human World.
John peered down to his Agumon partner. "Hey, Cas?"
"Hm?" Casimeir looked back up to him with his clover-colored eyes. "What's up?"
John looked forward again. "We should start coming back to the Digital World more often. I want to start really making a difference."
The Agumon's smile deepened slightly. He nodded in agreement.
It would be this moment when the Gumdramon. He looked adorable at first sight, John thought. Not a strange design for a Digimon, considering how there were many Digital Monsters that had different appearances of all shapes and sizes.
Bezil made their introduction. John happily bent down at his knees to accept his handshake. With Casimeir being roughly the same height, he didn't have to worry about that.
"It's great to meet you, Bezil," John chirped.
The human stood back up now. Folding his arms while Bezil would talk to the group. Breakfast was mentioned. Or at least, the lack of it.
"Not to worry, everyone. I brought my cooking supplies and some foodstuff with me that's well-preserved. I or Casimeir can cook something up when we take time to rest. Plus, I made sure to pack plenty of water."
He slapped his hands together in a soft clap while he smiled widely. "Well, let's head out there."

"You've been here before?" Sophie asked John, with interest. It was her first visit here in person. While her little brother Colin had visited this place frequently in its construction, so she knew of its existence, she was somewhat glad to see it with her own eyes. Partly because of its physical beauty, and partly because here was proof that digimon could work as a society and create such places just as well as humans.
Following that, they would then meet Bezil, who greeted John and Casameir just as politely. John said that he was prepared to cook when they felt the need to do so.
"Well, that's that sorted out then." Bezil said, cheerfully. With that, he led them on a path northeast of Rosewood, along the path of a rusted railroad that would move into the silence of the Server Woods.
"Probably the best way to move around the forest is by following the rail tracks." Bezil explained to the others. "The old paths might be rusted and disused, but it's all connected to civilization, one way or another. A lot of these old branchlines were commissioned by individual Trailmon of days gone by, back when loads more digimon lived in the wilds of the forest. It was their way of claiming their turf, and the Trailmons that ran the best branch lines were the most well regarded. But that changed when Rosewood was built, now most digimon congregate there, and these old branchlines became obsolete."
"Hm. Logical outcome." Lantis remarked. His knowledge of the Eastern Timberlands was limited, mainly because he spent a large part of his life as a Terminus City guard digimon, and rarely ventured out this way.
Their path forward was mostly unimpeded, but, eventually they came across an obstacle that they couldn't cross easily.
The rusted railroad came to an end when it intersected a fast flowing water stream. A bridge had been constructed in the past, but now out of disuse, the bridge was now destroyed. Only rotten wooden beams with broken rails remained. When Lantis tested the bridge, another wooden beam broke off and flowed downstream.
"Damn, too deep to cross safely..." the Leomon remarked. He looked to the others. "So, do you guys have a way of crossing this?"
"Well, we could cut down a tree and use its trunk as a bridge." Bezil suggested, as it had worked for him before. "But I'm open to other options?" he looked at John and Casameir, wondering if they had other methods.

John and Casimeir nodded with smiles to Sophie. "That's right," the human answered, "but only once. It's good to be back. Brings back fond memories."
It was quite easy for John and his Digimon Partner to remain affixed on the details of the forest while they traveled. The group traversed with the old railway system being their guide. An occasional glance to the digital steel had John reminiscing on his old model train hobby.
And so their trek came to an obstacle which stopped them in their tracks. The pair watched with great interest and wariness while the Leomon tested the strength of the rickety, decrepit skeleton of what used to be a bridge. John winced slightly at the sound of the sploosh once the board fell victim to the coursing river.
Bezil pitched the idea to cut down a tree to make a makeshift bridge. John and Casimeir, however, had another idea in mind.
The two smiled at each other quite coyly. "Should you tell them or should I?" Casimeir asked his partner.
"You go ahead," John replied as he flashed a grin.
Casimeir puffed up his chest a bit proudly. "I can fly us across the river!" he proclaimed, just waiting for anyone to point out that he had no wings to begin with.

"Ah, well, nice to know." Sophie replied to John. Honestly, it was good that AEGIS agents were going out of their way to learn about major places in the digital world. And for that she was grateful. Perhaps one day she should go on a tour of the place? To know the main civilizations of the digital world so she'd be able to identify the digital world better?
Well, probably not today though. But still, she was glad to have seen Rosewood.
Fast forward to their situation at the ruined bridge, they were currently trying to figure out a way across the obstacle of the fast flowing river. Then Casameir announced that he could fly them across. This drew Sophie, Lantis and Bezil's attention.
"Really?" Sophie asked. She wasn't yet aware of the capabilities of Casameir's upper evolutions, so she could see how his claim was plausible. "Alright then, that sounds like the best way to get us across. Show us what you can do, please?" she was eager to see what they could do here.
Bezil was curious to see as well, and remained silent.

This was perfect! It appeared that the others were now properly hyped for what was to come next. John gleefully pumped his right hand into the air, which his Digivice was affixed to. "Time to Digivolve, Cas!"
The Agumon became surrounded by golden bits of data. His form morphed and shifted, as it did every time he would Digivolve. "Agumon Digivolve to!"
The process did not last long. Two white wings sprouted from the collection of data, followed by a long blade-like horn. Soon enough the energy dispersed, and standing in the midst of it was a new form of Casimeir's.
"ExVeemon!"
Casimeir quickly stopped posing to bend down on his knee. "Alright. Everyone climb aboard. I'm gonna fly us across this river, no problem."

So, Casameir could digivolve to a flying form? Sophie and Lantis were excited to see. Bezil was too, as a winged digimon he knew how great it was to be able to fly. And so as the Agumon evolved to ExVeemon; a digimon that Lantis knew to be strong enough to carry them across this river by flight, the Leomon was impressed.
"Alright then." Lantis said, smiling. "Still, I'll de-digivolve to Spadamon all the same. You could probably do without the extra several-hundred pounds of me in this form." he chuckled, then glowed as he shrunk down to around Bezil's size of around 3 feet.
"Well, the flight's in your control, John, Cas, let's get across this river." Sophie said, hoping to get across easily. "Actually, while we're in the air, we might make better time to getting to the ruins. Wouldn't you agree, Bezil?"
"Hm? Oh, yeah! Just as long as you don't fly too fast so you risk smacking into the trees, yeah, we can make loads quicker time, depending on how long you can fly." the furred Gumdramon reasoned, joining John, Sophie and Lantis on Casameir's back. "Just make sure to keep a wide path away from the trees and we'll be fine."
"Seems like that's the plan then." Sophie said, turning to John, and patted Casameir's shoulder. "Well, with Bezil being our navigator, we entrust ourselves to you guys now. Let's get to these ruins and see what we've got." she said, then braced herself for takeoff.

Everyone was settled and ready to go. Casimeir felt eager to take flight. When the others pointed out that they could just fly to the temple instead of right across the river, the blue Champion Digimon grinned sheepishly.
"Heh, don't know why I didn't think of that. Yeah! I can fly us to the temple. And don't worry. I'll be careful."
Casimeir's wings spread out to their full length. After some heavy flaps, the group took to the air with ease. The ExVeemon made sure to follow Bezil's navigational directions to the letter. If all went well, they'd make it to the temple in no time.

Sophie, Lantis and Bezil were pleased that ExVeemon had the capability to fly straight to the temple without further worrying about land obstacles. From here, all Bezil had to do was remove his compass from his backpack, as well as a rudimentary map of the region and keep them on target, occasionally saying "Left a bit" or "Right a bit", quickly coming to trust Casameir's ability to navigate through the trees. Eventually, they would come in sight of some ruins in the forest that indicated some kind of ancient civilization, long ago taken over by the land. "Yes! That's it!" Bezil cried out as he saw it. "We should land here!"Assuming they did so, Sophie would turn to John and gently ask a question. "So, John, now that we're here, is your digivice picking up anything significant?" she asked gently. If not, that was fine. She was mainly asking out of just plain curiosity, since she knew digivices sometimes picked up unique signals nearby. Her own was silent, but she decided to check in on John's just in case there was something they should know about in here.

Bezil pointed out the ruins that may very well be the ones the group was looking for. John and Cas had no reason to doubt their guide's judgment. So, they landed within a clear space among the old pillars and structures without question.
John's Digivice came to life right on cue with Sophie's question. Surprised, he tilted it to look at the screen. Being hitched on his arm with a cradle had its benefits. The Partnered Human thought for a moment that it was a wise investment. He slipped off of Casimeir's back to get solid footing while inspecting the screen.
"Yeah," he said, "now that you mention it, my Digivice is picking something up. Yeah. These seem to be the right ruins."
John looked over to Sophie and Lantis respectively. "Just what might be in the ruins, Sophie?"

So then, there was a signal coming from the ruins. Sophie folded her arms in thought. "Well, from my experience, most digimentals have some kind of obstacle in front of them that only those strong enough with the right virtue can overcome." she said. Then she turned to their guide. "Bezil, you seem more familiar with these ruins than us, do you have anything to add?"
"Well... from what I know, they don't treat those that turn back very well..." Bezil began, a little nervously, but straightened his back when he realized the depth of this question. From then on, he stood firmly. "So, if you're ready for this, don't consider one step back. It's all forward from here, and if you see it through to the end, you'll be rewarded."
"Well put, little mon." Lantis said with approval. "Well then. If we're all ready, let's proceed forward..." he looked to Sophie to ask if they should reveal the fact that they had portal access if things got too dicey. Sophie exchanged looks, then shook her head. It would be better if John and Casameir didn't know about that particular thing for now. Especially if they were to succeed.
"What happens next is up to you, John." Sophie said instead, waiting to see what would happen.

John and Casiemeir stared down what was about to be the true beginning of their journey. Despite the cautionary words from Bezil, it was not enough to shake the pair's resolve. They had already been through so much. Faced so many trials. It would take much more than a little adversity to make them doubt themselves.
"Nowhere to go but forward," John finally said. "This will be a lot different than when we got our first Digimental at Whitewater City. A Seadramon had come to attack the beach goers. We wanted to protect them. Next thing you know, the Digimental washes up on the beach next to us."
Casimeir smiled while the memories played like a movie in his head. "Yeah. That's when I first became Tylomon. But, from the sound of things, this Digimental won't be as easy to get as the last one."
John nods and smiles to the others. "That's alright! Nothing wrong with a challenge. We've never backed down from anything, before. Right?"
"Right!" the Agumon chirped back with a big grin.
To initiate this quest, John and Casimeir took the first steps toward their goal.

With that said, Sophie, Lantis and Bezil accompanied John and Casameir into the ruins. It was a long walk before they would encounter anything of notice, but when they did, the three of them froze when they felt the ground shudder. They looked around wildly for what was happening, and to their shock, the entrance they had just come through was promptly blocked by a large stone door that bore a strange crest that at first resembled some sort of yin-yang eye.
"We're trapped!" Bezil gasped, stating the obvious, but blinked as he looked at it. "Wait, that symbol... that's the crest of Friendship."
"Well, that's interesting..." Sophie said, calming herself down after that initial shock. Bezil had told them what to expect, and they had accepted it, so here they were. "Seems the trial ahead relies on friendship..."
She broke off from here, realizing that friendship wasn't really her forte. So she probably wouldn't be much help in here. Lantis meanwhile remained her rock and took it from there.
"Alright. If the trial ahead is meant to test our friendship, then I for one accept that challenge!" he declared. "Sophie is my partner and therefore my friend. John and Casameir are agents of AEGIS and therefore are my friends too. And Bezil guided us here from the goodness of his heart, so he too is my friend. Whatever trials lay ahead of us, the five of us will overcome!"
Sophie and Bezil appreciated him saying that. It brought them out of their shock at least.
"Alright, you said it, big guy." Bezil said, grinning, the furred Gumdramon's sense of adventure being brought forward from that. "I'm ready. You guys too?"
"Yes, let's do this." Sophie replied. She would then proceed forward into the ruins. However, as they continued, she halted, feeling something uncomfortable about the path ahead.
Five large stone panels separated them from the gateway ahead. And she had the horrible feeling that something bad would happen if they would step on them. In response to this, she performed a test. She threw a stone onto the panel in front of them, and to her shock, it lit up with electric sparks. So the panels ahead were electrified.
Could they simply fly over them to their goal though? Bezil put out that opportunity by looking through a small telescope he had pulled from his pack. "No good. When the electricity was active, I saw one of four panels light up next to a large door that blocks the way..." he lowered his telescope and looked uncomfortably at the others. He looked like he wanted to say something, but it was too horrible to say. Lantis interpreted it from logic though.
"So, it seems that four of us have to individually take the pain of these electrified panels to open the door to the digimental, right?" the Leomon asked. Bezil gave a hesitant nod. "And... this electricity, a human can survive it?"
"As far as I can tell..." Bezil answered, then turned to John. "So... guess the trial is for us to take the pain of the panels so you can proceed... what do you think of this?"
Sophie and Lantis looked carefully at John, wondering how he would take this.
