Niko Henare was delighted to see the response in his tamernet that his and Brad's long-time friend Toki Akiyama had agreed to meet him at the edge of the Shining Sea.
A relatively little-explored region of the digital world, the Shining Sea was a former seabed that had risen to the surface through tectonic activity, now located within the vast mountain ranges that separated the dry desert of the Western Flatlands and the freezing desolation of the Northern Prominence. Of course, that also meant that this region was just as dry, but, it wasn't quite as extreme in either spectrum of temperature.
Nik and Brad had been here several times before. In fact it was where their headquarters for KIZNA was located - the revived civilization of Ys. But, as the young Maori man and his Grizzmon partner knew, it wasn't the only trace of civilization in this place.
The pair had been briefed very closely to not go off and disturb unknown dungeons without just cause, and so Nik's natural curiosity had been stayed... that was until he had received a signal on his digivice that something of significant value to him was located somewhere out there. He had been hard pressed on what to do here. He knew Yuuki and Hikaru were busy training new KIZNA members, and that Tetsu and Gryz were exploring the Backup Bayou with Gryz. They didn't really know much others in KIZNA, so, Nik and Brad had asked on the friend that had brought them together, Toki, and had asked him to accompany them in exploring an unknown location in the Shining Sea.
Nik was dressed in a hardy outfit of a jacket, cargo pants, boots, a wool cap, and a scarf, while Brad was fine in his purple and white fur with leather armor and gauntlets. It was early morning, the sky still retaining a pinkish hue before turning into the clear blue of the day. The chilling wind wasn't a problem for them. Still though, they hoped Toki would show up soon.

The Shining Sea. Toki had not been there since he obtained his Beast Spirit. It was a time that was difficult to remember for multiple reasons. His negative thought process at the time drove his spirit into a berserk frenzy while he was trapped in his own mind to face his inner demons. While he suffered guilt from potentially hurting those close to him, that was the day he reconciled with his father, and the day he truly understood who he wanted to be.
The bright light of a portal opens behind Nik and Brad along with the sound of footsteps in the sand indicated Toki's arrival. Dressed in a black coat, jeans, and a star-patterned scarf, Toki raised his hand over his eyes at the morning sun. Once his eyes adjusted, he smiled softly at his old friends "It's good to see you two again. How have you two been getting along since finding each other?" He asked as he walked next to them to look over the view.
"I hope the Digital World has been good to you. Or at the very least, the good has outweighed the bad." He said, tone somber. Still, he kept a positive face, for himself and for the pair "So what can I do for you guys? I'm guessing there's a bit of an adventure in store for us today if I had to guess?" He was positively beaming at the idea of working together with them "Whatever it is, I'll do my best. I've gotten plenty of rest and I'm ready to go."
Truthfully he was beginning to recover from a lot of the experiences he's had recently, knowing full well that it's what people would have wanted him to do. He still had friends out there. Friends who needed his help and his company, and he was more than happy to oblige.

Nik and Brad didn't have long to wait, thankfully. Toki appeared nearby via portal and approached them, asking how they were doing.
"Heya, Toki!" Nik said, waving back at him. "Yeah, we're going great. We've joined up with this group called KIZNA and helping them out with archaeological projects here in the digital world when we can. It's been pretty neat for the most part."
"Yeah, that's pretty much our story." Brad agreed. "We haven't really encountered anything massive quite yet. Bit of good, bit of bad, nothing too overwhelming."
Toki asked how he could be of assistance here. With this, Nik approached and held up his D-Terminal, showing its radar screen and the signal it was picking up. "So, we were exploring yesterday, and this situation seems to have occurred." the young Maori man explained. "From what I can gather, this means that a digimental that I'm linked to is close by, but... I don't really feel experienced enough to look for it by myself, so, if you could help us out and watch our backs while we find it, I'd be really grateful, bro."
The signal indicated that the digimental would be located at least a couple of miles northwest of their current position. What they would find there, neither Nik or Brad knew. But hopefully now that Toki was here, they could investigate it with some degree of safety.

Toki smiled happily "Great! I'm glad you guys have been doing so well here and even found yourself a group to work with. I've heard of KIZNA. They're good people." He nodded, very relieved that Nik and Brad have found a calling here. He mused about something, but kept it to himself. A team...he still has to get one together. However, now wasn't the time for that. These two needed his help and that's what he was going to offer.
He looked at Nik's Digivice and watched the radar ping "Mhm, you've got the right of it. Whenever I could find a new spirit, my Digivice would open a similar radar display. Looks to be due northwest of here." He said, looking over the horizon in that direction. "Hm...well it's a little ways from here so anything can happen. We'll see what we come across but hopefully this will go without incident." Still, it was better safe than sorry and Toki knew that. He was glad Nik had the foresight to get some assistance for this.
He would wait for Nik and Brad to be ready to go, but until then engaged in some small talk. "How have the two of you been getting along? I know that's probably a dumb question considering how immediately attached you were to each other upon first meeting, but I like to make sure and see how other people are doing." He remembered that moment fondly. Seeing Nik and Brad so happy to finally meet each other reminded him that the good things he tried to do meant something.
"As for me...well let's just say things could be a little better, but I'm hanging in there." He said, not wanting to bog things down with his own problems and worries. "A lot's happened lately, but that's not going to stop me." He said with his usual optimistic tone. "So! Whenever you're both ready, let's head out and get your digimental."

Nik was quietly pleased to hear that KIZNA's reputation was positive with Toki. That convinced him that he had chosen right to throw in his lot with those guys. Even though he wasn't very active with them, well, there'd be time enough for him to get to know the others.
Toki then confirmed that Nik's digivice was acting like a radar, then indicated which direction they should go in order to investigate. Excitedly, Nik and his partner Brad proceeded in a northwest direction across the crystal white sands.
As they were about to go, Toki asked how they were getting along with each other. Brad smiled at this question and answered first.
"Well, we do spend most of our time in the human world, given Nik's responsibilities there." he began. "But we get along nicely. We managed to secure a single student apartment for the college he's attending, so it's just me and him for the most part. Ah, and I stay in my Bearmon form so I don't take up too much space. Also, we do our best to spend time in the digital world, especially since Nik has a boyfriend now."
"Brad... not so loud eh, bro?" Nik automatically said, blushing a little as that little fact was stated. He sighed and gave a sheepish grin to Toki. "Yeah, we met on a blind date around Valentine's. He's a tamer called Alan Pantell, and... oh gosh, he's just the cutest thing, eheh..." he gave a little chuckle. Nik thought that he should spend more time with Alan after this maybe. They hadn't met up in a while now. Yeah, they were both busy, but, Nik would like to see him again.
Nik and Brad noted that Toki seemed to have gone through a lot too, but seemed a little vague about the specifics. They took that as an indication that he probably had gone through some hard things and might not want to talk about it, so they respected that.
"Alrighty then, let's go." Nik said, and the three of them headed northwest through the Shining Sea to the blip on his radar. Eventually, they came across a peculiar sight.
They were standing nearly on top of the radar, yet they could see nothing on the surface... except, after some moments of investigation, Brad noticed a hole in the ground nearby. The Grizzmon moved toward it, and saw that it was a staircase leading downward into the sandy ground, leading toward a pair of very secure, high tech doors, about eight feet high, seemingly leading to an underground facility.
Brad paused for a moment, then saw a symbol he recognized. "There... that rune..." he said, pointing his claws to a triangle within a pentagon within a heptagon. "I recognize that... that's the symbol of the Scientific Research division of the Digital World Republic."
"The what now?" Nik asked his partner. Brad blinked, then lowered his gaze for a moment.
"The Digital World Republic, or DWR as we usually called it." the bear digimon explained. "I used to be a part of it, over a hundred years ago. My memories of it are a little weak, but, I remember this much. The DWR's gone now, but, it seems to have left traces of it behind..."
"Right. And since the radar's indicating that the thing we're looking for is behind those doors, I think we're going to have to see whatever's in here in person." Nik concluded. With that, he turned to Toki. "So, uh, do you have any tips for having to deal with situations like this, Toki?" he asked, not wanting to mess up and cause unnecessary harm.

He tilted his head slightly at this news, but lit up happily upon hearing the name "Oh, Alan! I know him! I met him a while back and helped Levi reach his Champion stage. I hope the two of them are doing well after what we went through at the Golden Week incident. I wouldn't blame them if they were taking a break after that disaster..." Whatever happened there was clearly still fresh in Toki's mind, much to his own dismay. "Either way, congratulations on your relationship! I hope you two have been making each other very happy. You both deserve it."
It was heartwarming for Toki to hear of their relationship. Once again, happiness and love finds ways even during difficult times. As soon as they reached their destination, Toki looked around for anything out of the ordinary. "See anything?" He called out. Then Brad found a staircase leading down towards some very heavy duty looking doors. He crossed his arms and listened as Brad explained what exactly they were looking at "Should have brought Aylin along. She would have a field day with this."
He thought about how to proceed with this particular situation "Well first we'll have to figure out a way to even get inside if it isn't as easy as opening the doors." He said as he looked around the direct vicinity of the door. Hopefully nothing looked trapped or harmful. "It's too early to tell what could happen, but a good rule to live by is be prepared for anything. Digital World ruins can be unpredictable. Now how do we get in..."
Toki felt around the door, placing his hand against the symbol, pushing at the door, hoping that something would happen. "It's fascinating, though. These ruins can range from either what you typically think of like tombs and such...others feel eerily more advanced than what we have now." He said. He kept his hand on his Digivice in case something happened. "Though I have to admit I don't think I've heard of the Digital World Republic, so color me intrigued. I'm always down to learn more of this world's history." As cautious as he was, Toki was excited to see what was ahead.
It was clear that Nik was a little nervous going forward, so Toki pat him on the shoulder before they moved on "Hey, it'll be alright. Just stick close and keep an eye out for anything that could lead us to where we need to go. We'll get through this and Brad will have himself a new form."

Nik couldn't help but blush at Toki's compliment. In truth, he would have rather spent a bit more time with Alan, especially with the whole Golden Week debacle. Alas, he wasn't in a place to have been able to react to that. In fact he wanted to check up on Alan after this. And see how Levi was going too. "Wow, I didn't know you were the one that helped him evolve." Nik admitted. "Good on you. They seem really happy at being able to look after themselves now."
"Hee, that's also something you and Alan have in common yes, Nik?" Brad added, smiling. "Both you and Alan getting Toki's help to evolve. I knew you were a good match~"
Nik could only chuckle at this again. Then when it came to the doors, they didn't react as Toki approached, and there was no visible kind of trap on them anyway. Just some basic kinds of patterns, mainly in the style of the DWR's scientific research division.
When Toki pushed on the door, Nik let out a small "oooh..." of surprise as a yellow glowing panel appeared on the left door. In digicode, the writing read "Please verify identity." It did not have a key panel for a password, nor did it have a speaker or any kind of lens that might be used as a retinal scanner. Just a simple flat panel.
Nik appreciated Toki patting him on the shoulder here. "Thanks. Just this is the first time I've really been exploring the unknown in the digital world. I'm sure Brad and I can get through this." he answered.
Brad meanwhile inspected the panel, the Gryzmon coming to the conclusion as to what it was quickly. "I think I know what sort of scanner this is." he said, then pressed his paw on it. The panel then flickered as it processed Brad's data. Then to Nik's surprise, but not Brad's, it seemed to be going fine. More writing appeared on the panel.
"Subject identified... Braddon, 7/71st Recon Battalion. Rank: Sergeant. Level 3 clearance to facility approved. Please stand back..."
Nik and Brad did so as the great metal doors opened outwards through an automatic mechanism. The rust was terrible and they made a very loud noise, but, open they did. A dry, musty sort of smell awaited them inside, but nothing too overwhelming.
"Well... looks like we're in." Nik remarked to Toki, then, carefully, he strode in. The first thing Brad did though was check the inside for a similar opening mechanism, and to his relief, it seemed that they would be able to get out fairly easily.
Once that was sorted out, Nik looked around the room. It was a rather roomy one, its walls, ceiling and floor lined with riveted metal plate. The lights were dim, but some machines still seemed to be active. It was 3 meters high, 10 meters wide, and 20 meters long, ending with a pair of metal doors. These were currently locked.
A machine nearby drew his attention. He and Brad walked over to it, the writing in digicode.
"Main power: offline. Emergency power: online. To re-engage main power, please reset switches A and B, then activate the generator simultaneously." Brad read, then looked at Toki and Nik. "Hmm. It seems the three of us must press switches together to turn the main power on."
"Makes sense, I guess, so that they need more than one person to switch the lab back on." Nik said. He then looked at Brad again. "And what was that, Brad? Or should I say, Sergeant Braddon?"
"Heh, I'm not in the military anymore, Nik." Brad said. "So, Toki, things look alright to you so far?" the doors closed behind them, but it seemed that any of them would be able to use the switch to re-open them if needed. Nik didn't really like that they had closed though, but, that was just nerves probably.

"Really? I'm...I'm really glad I was able to help them that much. To hear that they're so happy to be able to look after themselves makes me feel a lot better. I know how nervous they were at first." He said. He felt a little proud that he was able to impact them so much.
Toki blushed a little bit at the fact that he's helped both of them achieve their Champion state in one way or another. He still felt a little bad about the way he literally kick started Levi's digivolution, but the fact they're doing well now is what mattered.
Nik's confidence was a nice thing to see, especially after what Toki's been through. He hoped he would be able to retain that confidence going forward. "Good, because I know you can too." He answered as he watched Brad approach the doors. He stepped back cautiously as the digicode appeared on the doors, asking for some kind of verification. "7/71st...? I've never heard of that before, but it sounds like some kind of military..." He mused to himself.
Since they were clear to go inside, Toki followed close behind. The smell was a little unpleasant and irritated his nose a bit, but it was nothing he couldn't handle. Thankfully the room still had some power, at least enough to light the way. As they approached, Brad read more digicode. Toki scratched at his chin a bit "Hm. Well let's take a look around and see if we can find the switches and generator we need to use." He said, looking around the room. It wasn't that large of a room, so finding what they needed shouldn't be too difficult. "I'll handle one of the switches. Good thing we have enough people to get inside." He said.
Brad had confirmed that it was some kind of military group. It didn't seem like it was around anymore though. At least, not in any official capacity. "So far so good. I don't see anything that looks to be defenses or something that'll hurt us. As long as we get main power up and running again I think we'll be set for the time being." He looked behind him as the doors closed and narrowed his eyes "Could be automatic, but still...even though we're okay now, keep your guard up and let's look for those switches."

Nik gave a little chuckle when Toki mentioned how nervous they were. "Yeah, Alan was nervous with me too... although I was probably just as jumpy at the time as well... I'd never dated another guy before, but, I never felt like I met a dead end with him, you know? He was so sweet and we just... advanced naturally, and, guess we're boyfriends now..." he finished with a chuckle.
When Brad had his identification verified, Toki mused that he hadn't heard of that unit. Brad felt that he should explain in that case. "In my previous incarnation, I was a soldier digimon attached to the DWR, namely the 7/71st Recon Battalion. It was a highly prestigious unit that basically threw themselves in the middle of conflicts and learned all they could about their immediate situations. I... don't really remember what happened in my last missions in that unit, just that I was a part of it."
Nik didn't feel the need to pressure his partner to ask more. So he simply paid attention to the task at hand, namely to reactivate the main generators to bring the power back online. Thankfully Toki said that he was happy to assist with this, so it would hopefully be a simple task from here.
Thus, eventually, Nik, Brad and Toki found their stations. And given the countdown, they managed to press the initiation buttons at exactly the right point, engaging the main power of the hidden laboratory with their stroke of luck. The main fluorescent lights shone above; the power to the various laboratory benches were restored, it seemed all life had been restored to this place from which it had not existed before.
But most distractingly of all, a new voice joined the room. It sounded like a young male human, but one significantly more educated than his years. Nik and Brad stared at him, and thus they saw the source of those words. It was a Gomamon, his lower body resting in a hovering pod that zoomed over the ground - at least seven feet in height.
"Whoa... nice job, guys!" the Gomamon said, in a cheerful voice. "It's probably been over 100 years since I've been put in stasis, but, you guys revived me! Thanks a bunch! In exchange, I'll tell you everything I know about this place. With just a small caveat... please will you let me accompany you? It's been so long since I've been with other digimon. So, what do ya say?"
Nik was a little dumbstruck here. While yeah, he was glad to see another digimon, having him ask so much of him so quickly was a little much to ask for so quickly. Hopefully Toki could answer better than he could.

"Having someone you can always trust and rely on for love and support is invaluable. I'm glad the two of you have each other." He said, relieved to hear their relationship was going so well. "Sometimes we just end up meeting that very special someone we connect with on a deep, personal level we can't really explain."
He listened to Brad's explanation of the 7/71st and something called the DWR. He still didn't quite understand it fully, but it seemed they were a specialized unit that provided important intel like a Recon unit should reasonably do. However it seemed some of his memories regarding it were lost and since Nik didn't pressure him for more information, Toki decided not to as well.
Then the group stood at various points in the room and at the signal, they activated what they had to at the same time. Toki shielded his eyes a bit at the sudden lights as they adjusted to the brightness. The room certainly felt a lot less dreary now that it was well lit.
Toki joined Nik and Brad in being dumbfounded by this Gomamon floating about in some kind of pod, happily praising them for...reviving him? "Wait..a hundred years? Stasis? You've been stuck down here frozen for over a hundred years?" He felt awful for the poor Digimon, but was also fascinated by their potential knowledge. At least they seemed rather cheerful despite the huge time gap. He wondered how much would be different for him.
He offered the Digimon a warm smile "Well I don't see why we wouldn't bring you along. You probably have just as many questions for us as well, so we'll do our best to help you out too. Do you have a name? I'm Toki." He said, wanting Gomamon to be as comfortable around them as possible. He knew for certain that if he were to wake up after such a long time the first people he would want to meet would be friendly and amicable.

The floating Gomamon regarded Toki with a close curiosity, hovering around the tall human as he took in his appearance. Still, he wasn't impolite though. "Hiya, Toki. I'm Bixby. Nice to meet you." he said, stopping in midair and waving a flipper before he continued his inspection.
"Hmm..." he murmured as he did the same to Nik, his green eyes wide with curiosity. "You two can't be digimon... can you?" he pondered out loud.
"Nope, bro, we're humans." Nik said, keeping a cheerful tone. He realized that this Gomamon might not have ever seen humans before, especially after 100 years of stasis. "Ah, and I'm Nik by the way. This is my partner Brad."
"Humans?!" the Gomamon asked, his face suddenly brightening with delight. "You mean... humans have finally returned to the digital world?!"
"Well... um... we've been "returned" for a while now, but yeah, pretty much." Nik answered, shrugging.
"Oh, excellent! Then the fact that you're here in this lab... you must've been drawn to the signal weren't you?" Bixby asked. Nik merely nodded, confirming this as true, hoping he'd continue. "That was one of the final functions of this lab here... well, at least the one I was assigned to. Long story short... I was meant to help create an item called a "digimental", so that the human reinforcements we sent for would have an extra bit of power for when they arrived. I... take it that it's a bit late for its original purpose now, given I take it the DWR's no longer around, yeah?"
"That's correct, Bixby. I'm sorry." Brad answered. Bixby sighed, shaking his head.
"So much of a waste... but you guys seem nice, and you were led here, and... if my records are correct..." he tapped on a module upon his hovering pod. "You're accompanied by a former 7/71st Recon soldier in Sergeant Braddon, yeah, I think you're trustworthy."
By now, both Nik and Brad were intrigued by what Bixby was saying. He spoke a little excitedly and fast, but there didn't seem to be anything dishonest about him. Plus, if he knew about the layout of the lab and could help them to the digimental, then they were willing to go along with him for the time being. Bixby hovered around above them for a moment in thought before continuing onward.
"Okay... so the situation is this." he began. "When I was put into stasis, three levels of security was put on this lab. A Sergeant of the DWR military, like Brad here, was enough to lift the 3rd level of security, so we're safe on this level. However, security is still active on the 2nd and 1st levels, and the digimental is smack-bang in the first level. While I've got a few gizmos and gadgets on this pod here that can fend off rookie level threats, we'll need something as strong as Champion levels to get through 2nd level security, and even Ultimates might struggle against the 1st level security. So, first question, you guys able to evolve that far?"
"Yep, we sure can." Nik said, glad that Bixby was quickly getting to the point.
"Awesome!" Bixby said, clasping his flippers together. "Now, I can open the doors, but I can't disable the security, so, once we go further in, there'll be automatic defenses we'll have to get through. So, lemme know when you're ready and I'll get these doors down for ya."
While Nik and Brad were eager to proceed, they looked to Toki, hoping he was alright with all this too. Things were happening rather fast, and they hoped the more experienced Chosen might have ways to discern whether or not the path ahead was safe.

Bixby's complete enthusiasm and giddiness was such a pleasant sight. It seemed he took this whole situation in stride. This left Toki with kind of a somber, existential thought. What if this happened to him? Was this what it was like for his spirit when between his death and finding him? He shuddered slightly at the thought "I admire your willpower, Bixby. This couldn't have been an easy thing to go through."
What Bixby said next piqued his interest "I knew that humans have been here long ago, since my father Yosuke Akiyama traveled the Digital World a lot when he was younger. Given the time differences it's very possible he could have explored it in your era." He mused, interested in any possible correlation.
Toki thought about the nature of Digimentals. Were they all manufactured? How did they work? He didn't have to worry about them due to being a spirit user, but the history fascinated him. "Were they created just recently in your time? Because as far as I know they're plentiful now, so in a way your research paved the way for a lot of good."
Once Bixby began to explain the situation, Toki listened to every word. It looked like it wasn't going to be as easy as walking up to the digimental and taking it. It was protected by layers of security they would have to get through. Understandable though, given the nature of what was hidden away. He nodded at Bixby's question. "If necessary I can go beyond Ultimate, but I'd rather not if I didn't have to."
He smiled at Nik and Brad "We've stumbled upon something huge. A place where Digimentals were once created, a Digimon lost to time now awakened again to see a new, changed world...speaking of which." He looked at Bixby "Once all is said and done here, what do you plan to do? A lot's changed in a hundred years...I'd hate for you to feel lost." He said with a sympathetic look.
Once his various questions were answered, he stood ready near Nik and Brad "I'm ready whenever the rest of you are." Toki then pulled out his Digivice and activated it, swiping the accumulated data on his hand across the scanner "Beast Spirit Evolution!" He called out, taking the form of Lagosmon and crouched down, ready to move. "Just be sure to assess each room before pushing forward. Keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. A mismatched panel, raised flooring, and corners. Always be mindful of every corner." He told the two.

Bixby honestly blinked with surprise from what Toki said to him. As a researcher for the DWR, it had been a rare occurrence when someone had asked if he was okay with something. He paused for a moment, then pressed the tips of his claws together with a kind of embarrassed expression. "To be honest, yeah... being in stasis and all that... I honestly hoped to see friends when I got out of it, yet all I see are strangers... sorry if I offend you guys by saying so, but, that's the truth."
When he said that, Nik felt like he wanted to just pick the little guy up out of his pod and give him a big hug, but he supposed that wasn't on the itinerary. All he could do in that case was to just continue along with all this.
What Toki said next made Bixby as well as Nik and Brad surprised; that Toki was the son of a human that had been here before. Bixby tapped out some calculations on his hover pod to make sure he knew the possibilities.
"So, it takes 18 years for a human to fully grow..." he murmured. "Since Human world time is 7 times faster than digital world time, then that means... a human born 18 years ago on Earth is equal to... 126 years ago in the digital world." the seal digimon's expression was something of astonishment at this. "So... Yosuke could have been around in the time the DWR was around..."
"Huh... that's pretty amazing there." Nik remarked. Then the conversation turned back to digimentals and how they were manufactured. Bixby cleared his throat to reconstitute his speaking, then replied.
"This lab is in the Shining Sea because the crystals here are integral to the process." he said. "I'm... not entirely sure of the full process, if I did, then I'd probably have access to level 1 security. But I know that the glowing crystals outside have something that reacts to digimon and human data when refined."
"Hmm... I reckon I might know a few others that might want to inspect this lab..." Nik remarked. But Bixby waved his flippers urgently.
"Please don't! Digimentals aren't the only thing studied down here..." the Gomamon looked a little disturbed. "There were more... dangerous things down here too. Weapon research... things that should never be rediscovered. Please... none of you tell about this lab to anyone else?"
Nik exchanged looks with Brad and Toki before eventually agreeing. "Alright, you have my word that we won't tell anyone about this lab." he said.
"Mine too." Brad added.
"Okay, great." Bixby said, to both that and news that Toki could evolve quite a way too. It was then that he noticed that Toki didn't have a partner. "But... you're a human, where's your partner?" he asked.
Toki then asked what he planned to do once they were done with this lab. Bixby blinked, then shrugged.
"Guess I'll find a civilization and earn my keep." he said. "You know of any ones around here?"
"Well, there's the city of Ys." Brad replied. "I'm sure you'd be welcome there. There's a Library and we're accepting of researchers so-"
"Say no more, I'm in." Bixby said, delighted. Then his question of what Toki could do was answered by his spirit evolution. "...whoa so spirit evolution does exist..." he breathed.
Taking Toki's advice, they proceeded to the door that would take them to Level 2. Bixby flew his hover pod over and made a connection with some wires to the terminal on the side of the door. "It's a deciphering program that I developed here." Bixby explained to the others. "It can activate the door motors, but security is a separate system unfortunately, military grade. Only a Lieutenant or senior scientist can get through."
Eventually, the panel glowed green, and the magnetic-locked doors opened, revealing the way to the second level. It was less well lit than the third. On Toki's advice, Bixby shook his head.
"Sadly it's a security system that works via infrared detection." he said. "Unless the three of you can hide your heat signatures, it's gonna activate. If I remember, there's a laser turret in each corner, and two hunter-seeker drones that'll be released when the security's activated. But there's plenty of places you can hide behind. Best get out of the line of sight of the turrets first, then deal with the drones, then take out the turrets."
"Right." Nik said. "Um... probably best if I hold back, eh?" he asked, chuckling nervously. Not much he could do against laser turrets and drones.
"Alright then. If Champion level is adequate, and ranged combat is necessary, I'd best armor digivolve." Brad said, then de-digivolved from his Champion form to his rookie Bearmon form. With that, Nik agreed, then activated the digimental in his digivice.
"Digiarmor energize!" he cried. And Brad evolved in a flash of light, transforming not in size, but in shape. He was now a white snow-bear, dressed in khakis and holding a quad-barrelled bazooka weapon.
"Bearmon armor digivolve to... Kumamon!"
With a grin, he turned to Bixby. "Oh, by the way, I can hide my heat signature in this form, so the security won't pick me up, right?"
"No, but the backup motion sensors will." Bixby answered. Brad's initial enthusiasm faded. "Nevermind, though, a Beast Spirit and yourself should handle them okay. In fact, the drones rely on heat signatures alone, so you could evade them better. Anyway, when we're ready, let's continue."
Brad would do so, with Nik staying behind a little, hoping not to trigger the security sensors beforehand.

It appeared that Toki's consideration got a reaction out of Bixby as the Gomamon looked contemplative for a moment. Waking up and not seeing beloved friends and associated and instead meeting a group of strangers. A scary and saddening thought, but it seemed like Bixby was holding up okay. Though Toki knew what it was like to put on a brave face and would simply be there if Bixby needed someone to talk to after all was said and done.
Toki listened as Bixby did their calculations. His answer gave Toki quite a bit to think about, and some questions to ask his dad. This was for sure an interesting bit of knowledge. He figured he'd like to learn more about Yosuke's adventures anyway so that would be a good place to start with next time they had a chance to talk.
When Nik suggested that some others might be interested in this lab, Bixby suddenly became frightened and pleaded for them not to tell anyone else of this facility. "You have my word that no one will hear of this place from us." He said. Though a promise like that won't prevent accidental discovery in the future. What could be done to prevent that...? They'd have to cross that bridge when they came to it.
Bixby looked amazed at the Spirit Evolution. It made Toki feel slightly embarrassed and maybe a tiny bit prideful, but he let that pass soon enough. Bixby very swiftly accepted the offer to go with Nik and Brad to Ys, which brought some comfort to Toki's mind in regards to where he would go.
Soon enough it would be time to move further into the facility. Once Bixby had the door opened, Toki looked ahead warily. The lighting would be a problem, but it wasn't going to deter him from moving forward. He listened to Bixby's descriptions of the defenses and thought for a moment "Brad, I'm going to go forward and take out the turrets. Stay hidden behind me and take out the seeker drones when they show up. They'll train on me, but since you don't have a heat signature they should ignore you if you stay out of sight. Once they're focused, do what you can to destroy them." He said to Brad, who was now in their Kumamon form.
Once they were ready, Toki rushed through the hall, heavy steps echoing throughout. Subtlety was assuredly not this forms strong suit, and he embraced it. As he approached the corners, Toki slammed his palms onto the floor towards both directions "Stalagmite Fortress!" He called out. The metal creaked beneath where the turrets would be on either side before spikes of earth shot out of the ground around them, hopefully tearing them to pieces before they have a chance to fire.
----
Stalagmite Fortress: Upon placing their palms on the ground, an area of their choosing erupts in a barrage of earthen spikes. Enemies caught will be damaged and suffer bleed damage for 2 turns (2 turn cooldown.)

Bixby was visibly pleased when Nik, Brad and Toki promised they would speak nothing of this lab after they left. For now, the Gomamon seemed to trust them on their word. For this, Nik was grateful, but still, he hoped he wouldn't encounter a situation where he'd have to break his word.
Before long, they would be in a position to proceed forward. Toki told Brad to stick behind while he dealt with the turrets. Brad agreed, preparing himself for the task ahead.
As Toki entered the 2nd level, the Turrets immediately caught on to his heat signature and turned to fire, but Toki's strike hit them first, the shards of the earth blasting through the metal plate and knocking the turrets from their mounts, rendering them unable to attack.
But as he did so, the security of the 2nd level was activated, and the 2 security drones as well as the other 2 turrets on the other side of the room that led to the 1st level were activated. The drones trained their sights on Toki, but Brad stuck to the battle plan and rested his gun on his shoulder, its barrels glowing with aurora-like energy.
"Borealis Blaster!" Brad cried, and fired pulses of energy at both drones before they could lock in on Toki and fire. One was destroyed outright, but the other was merely knocked about. However, before it could recover, Bixby arrived on the scene in his hover-pod.
"Thunder Beam!" he snapped, and a blast of electricity briefly connected his pod with the drone, finishing it off for good. It seemed Bixby was determined to help them out all the way. Nik was about to approach, but Brad halted him.
"There's still two turrets!" he told his partner, then turned to his friend. "Toki... think you can handle them too?"
Toki's attack on Turrets A and B were successful, destroying them outright.
Brad uses Borealis Blaster on Drones C and D, destroying one and critically damaging another.
Borealis Blaster: Raises his quad blaster, takes aim and fires a volley of glowing aurora energy blasts at the target. Can damage one target with concentrated fire, or target multiple foes for reduced damage each.
Bixby uses Thunder Beam on Drone D, destroying it for good.
Thunder Beam - Bixby fires a beam of electrical energy from his pod, dealing lightning elemental damage.
Turrets X and Y are now active, and seeking out targets... (on the furthest left and right corners of the square room).
