Junpei had every right to be afraid. If Yuko was glaring daggers at him before, it only became worse once Mikazuki was no longer unwittingly protecting him. Fortunately, the male delinquent had another trick up his sleeve… or wherever he had actually pulled said trick from, on account of wearing no sleeves at the moment. “Where did you get those glasses? You know what, forget it.” The girl groaned, before crossing her arms in front of her chest and huffing loudly. “Hmph! Next time don’t joke without thinking of my feelings first, or else you’ll never see me in a bikini again.” It took the words actually coming out of her mouth for Yuko to realize how weird and out of place her ‘threat’ sounded.
Before she could take back her words, Mika’s goggle-wearing head resurfaced, making an excited observation of how clean this part of the river was compared to the rest. “It’s really that good, huh? You know, I bet if we swim upstream, the water will get cleaner the further we move away from civilization.” Yuko mused, as she leisurely swam ahead of the two boys. However, a few seconds later, she stopped dead in her tracks. “Uuuh… guys? What’s this?”
Ahead of them was a clear distortion in the air. It was like a see-through blob of floating, colorful shapes and arrays of numbers that looked like those you would see in an old digital clock, completely immaterial in nature, yet undoubtedly existing. Three small orbs of light shot out of it and headed for each of the three teenagers, revealed to be strange devices that could fit in their hands. Yuko caught hers in the air and examined it curiously. “What the… Did someone drop their old stopwatch in the river too? This thing has buttons! It has freaking buttons!” As a millennial, this blew her mind. This clunky, rubbery design made it look primitive compared to her slick, button-less smartphone.
As soon as she acknowledged the strange device in her hand, Yuko felt an indescribable tug from the distortion itself. It was as if an unheard voice was reaching out to her, calling her, beckoning her to come closer. She only had to reflexively take one step forward for the distortion to grow in size and consume her. “Kyaaah!” A sharp cry escaped the girl’s lips, as she turned around and tried to swim away from it, but to no avail. Her body seemingly turned into a 2D object and slowly taken apart pixel by pixel, until only her head and one arm remained, desperately clawing at the water. “Guys… Heeeeeeeelp!!!” She cried out before disappearing completely before the eyes of the two boys, who would soon meet a similar fate.
