It had been quite the effort to get this far into the mainland. What with the steady distrust of individuals from the dark area bleeding into their desire to leave. There had been a plethora of questions, concerns and the sheer curiosity of many there as the little orb approached them. Many days of trying to pass bits off to captains for transport across the sea was met with harsh reprisals. None of them wanted to take Orion to where they wanted to go.
So they waited for one that was less 'honorable' less 'worried' about that sort of thing and more in it for the money. The bits paid their way and the small dingy captain was well off on their way to the mainland with the little orb in tow. Sure the thing wasn't really that stable but Orion didn't care, it hummed it's way along and once they were across the expanse of water blocking them from the mainland? They bid their captain adieu with a series of pleased notes; leaving the sailor in a somewhat confused state.
Orion had things that it wanted answers to, most primarily they wanted to know about the fauna on the mainland and why there was such a lack of it in the Dark area. Perhaps it was possible to take some of the more hardier species that would be present on the mainland and place it in the dark area. But first Orion would have to find such a plant, which would require a long term study of the fauna in several distinct locations.
They knew of one location that would primary have sturdy fauna, maybe not long living ones given what they remembered about the place. The cipher jungle, a rather dangerous but large area that the orb could spend quite some time looking things over.
So in simplicity sake, they'd take samples of bark. Digesting the data and comparing it to the many other samples it had taken in the dark area prior to leaving. They were healthy, stable and by the feel of the data of the various trees many of them were actually fairly long lived.
The musical number that followed the orb wherever it went attracted quite a few onlookers from time to time. Birds, some strange predators, even some that would attack them! The small orb huffing as it's research was interrupted and would spend the better part of a day out of the predator's reach by simply flying higher than they could reach.
Eventually they'd give up and let Orion get back to what they were here for. The larger trees were far too old, far too sturdy and replanting them would take an extreme amount of effor that they couldn't possibly manage. Something smaller, something that had a shorter span of life and could be rapidly planted...
Shrubs perhaps? Smaller variants of those sturdy trees? They were data after all and mix-breeding plants was possible... As orion worked they'd keep on humming to themselves, occasionally managing some musical notes as they happily collected samples from various fauna. Even some fungi was under scrutiny by the wayward scientist. Though... nothing was quite hitting the mark that Orion hoped.
