Sho Tsuginaga vs. The Sea of Blood [Sho & Yuko]

Researcher's Log; 1st Site of 7 in Zone 1; The Dark Area
The Grand Library's entries on this vast ocean still amount to only a footnote of what I'm seeing, probably because you can't listen to the screeches of digital cores between the pages of some set of files. Why else would I visit the Dark Area first. But, getting over the habit of looking over my shoulder and asking "Who's there?" might be tougher than actually uncovering the significance of the place. I don't think I can touch it. The warnings were very clear and I don't exactly find dying productive. But while I'm charting observations, I should say that this vicious-looking red is quite pleasing to the eyes. Beautiful, even.
Backspace. Delete. He'd have to redo that last line for the third time. Sho's violet eyes narrowed in a special kind of frustration. Not because of how difficult it was to peck at his D-Terminal with his claws, but because of how enamored the soul of his Bastemon seemed to be with this place. It was enough to make his own heart flutter while he was staring out into the waving, wailing horizon of crimson. He forced his tail to thud onto the ashen beach at the edge of the sea, crossing his limber legs to balance upon it so he could take a good look around the bloody waters. Ships, a stray digicore, anything that could provide signs of data-based life in this place would put him one step closer to figuring out why something like this would exist. Nothing visible made itself known to Sho on this part of the coast, so it was clear he had to move and move quickly. Even with the sharp eyes and reflexes of a feline he had to keep watch for anything stirring around him. He couldn't exactly go around attracting the wrong attention, could he? He had to find creatures willing to speak to him, or at the very least be free to do their monsterous business without knowing he was watching. Especially not as a human being. Prancing along the coast, he kept his ears and eyes facing the sea. Couldn't anyone hear his silent plea? Preferably something that didn't think Bastemon was on the menu...

“The Dark Area, the most wretched place in all of the Digital World. Home to those who were cast away by God, those whose data was horribly and irreversibly corrupted… The Nightmare Soldiers, evil Digimon, whom I once ruled with a silky fist. Its denizens know only of darkness, despair, war and the constant struggle to stay alive in a land where violence is the only law. Behold! The Sea of Blood, where the data of the poor Digimon who couldn’t reconstruct themselves endlessly drift towards oblivion! What a vivid red color! What exquisite music do their screams and moans of everlasting torment make! Isn’t it marvelous? Isn’t it beautiful?”
“No, it isn’t! It kinda makes me sick. And cut down on the dramatic narration, will you?!”
Another day, another odd quest, where Yuko had been dragged by her partner Jokermon into yet another random part of the Digital World. Only this time, instead of ending up in a colorful fantasy landscape, they had boarded a creepy ass, red-eyed Trailmon and literally found themselves in Digi-Hell. Yeah yeah, Jokermon had called it the ‘Dark Area’, but Yuko was both smart enough and Japanese enough to know what Jigoku actually meant.
“Why are we even here?” The delinquent girl asked, while walking along the shore, hugging herself closely as the bloody sea’s haunted atmosphere made her skin crawl and sent shivers through her entire body. “I have some old friends downtown that I need to visit. Ahhh… It feels good to be back home!” The jester-like Digimon replied, sighing in content, as he took in the macabre scenery much more nonchalantly than his human companion. “I wish I was back home…” Yuko said in a resigned voice, looking down sadly.

This time there was no fighting it, his ears perked all the way up. That flamboyant voice was yammering on and on about this hellish place with a passion...And, was he hearing correctly? Back home? Who ever giving this speech called this place their home! What a jackpot! Sho began to race closer and closer to them on all fours, nearing them as quickly as he could. Hiding was useless, when you were looking for prey, you had to pounce! The Bastemon kicking up sand at a breakneck pace was really about to jump the both of them, at least until it remembered it was Sho Tsuginaga, a researcher. Researchers didn't pounce on people. Sho decided to flip over them instead, changing his momentum with an acrobat's precision and tumbling over behind them, skidding in the sand and giving a rough sigh. "Ahh! Sorry, apologies, apologies!" The cat worriedly exclaimed, dusting itself off with its claws as it stood, turning to them. It was a Digimon and a human. If he hadn't almost sprayed sand all over them, it might've made this encounter a little less embarrassing. "I've just been wandering this wonderful place for hours looking for someone who knew this area!" Sho said with a smile, barely noticing what he just said. In fact, thinking about it made his ears lower as he went into a bow. "I know I'm springing this on you without an introduction, but if I can get that out of the way, I'm Sho Tsuginaga...a researcher. Novice researcher, as it would seem..." His voice turning into a low mewl.

Something was approaching the traveling Tamer and her partner at a rapid pace, making no attempt to hide their presence. Upon noticing, Yuko gasped and immediately clung to Jokermon for protection, since she knew better at this point than to try her luck with wild Digimon. “Shit, something’s coming towards us! Do something!”
The mad clown, in turn, grinned wickedly and willed his ruby-colored scythe to manifest in his hand. “Way ahead of you! Lunatic S- huh?” He prepared to attack, but stopped in confusion, as the creature did an aerial flip over them, landing behind them. It was revealed to be a half-humanoid, half-feline Digimon, dressed in exotic clothes that made no attempt to hide its rather… robust figure.
“A cat-girl Digimon… a cat-girl Digimon! Jokah, what’s it called? And why does it call itself a researcher?” Yuko asked the demonic clown. She clearly still thought that this was a wild Digimon. Jokermon adjusted his jester’s cap and took one long, hard look at the scantily-clad feline, smiling widely as he thought he recognized them. “Bastemon, you sneaky old cat! What are you doing running around in the Dark Area and calling yourself Sho Tsuginaga? Oh dear, is this a new phase of yours?”

Sho was drawn into the banter without a second thought, looking up at the harlequin partner the girl had with a fang-filled grin. It held up a crimson claw to him, wagging it cheekily while it's tail flickered with excitement. "New phase? I've always been me, as graceful and glamourous as ever as you can see..." The Bastemon replied with a coy giggle, and Sho couldn't help but agree. After all, what did a proud creature like herself have to hide? Reluctantly however, it stood up straight, interlaced its claws and closed its eyes showing that pride in her wet, upturned nose. "But today, I am a woman of science. A girl on a mission! What's more..." It began to assert, the data that composed it beginning to unravel and fall away, revealing the scrawny boy with brown tousled hair underneath. He stood in the same pose, adjusting his glasses, and speaking in a slightly more masculine voice. Sho was still pretty small for his age, but at least he didn't sound like a feline anymore. "I'm also a human being. A researcher named Sho Tsuginaga." The boy finished what the cat had been going on about before, albeit much less enthusiastically. After a deep breath, his cheerful voice started up again. "If you're confused, I'd love to know why. It's part of why I'm here after all, on top of the whole 'uncovering the societies of the Digital World' thing.'" He chuckled, shaking his head as he extended a fair-skinned hand to the girl while he leered slightly at the Jokermon. "Geez, that's the weapon I was going to run into? That was close...My mind is still a little bit frazzled from her as you can imagine." Sho's eyes widened, the fear in them far from hidden despite his calm voice. "At any rate, I'm free to answer your questions if I'm free to ask mine afterwards. Is that okay?" He inquired with a smile. Sho didn't think he could remember ever smiling so wide? I guess this was the 'high' his transformations tended to give...Good grief.

To say that Yuko was surprised when the playful Bastemon switched form before their very eyes would be an understatement. This wasn’t a normal Digivolution, at least not of the kind the newbie Tamer had so far bore witness to. This was something else entirely. “You’re… a human… that can turn into a Digimon?” The multicolor-haired girl muttered, still very much in a state of shock.
Heck, even Jokermon was bewildered by this, his one visible eye blinking twice. “A human Digivolving into a Digimon? Impossible! Unless…” His red lips curved into yet another smile, as he started laughing jovially. “Ohohohoho! Well, I’ll be! Humans have discovered the hidden Spirit Totems and are using them to channel the ancient Digimon’s powers! Who would of thought!”
The young Japanese delinquent hesitantly shook Sho’s hand, before drawing back. “I’m Himura Yuko… and this is Jokah. My partner, I guess.” She said, pointing with her thumb. “It’s Jokah-sama!” Jokermon corrected his Tamer, willing his frightening scythe to disappear, before tipping his funny hat off to the curious researcher and bowing like a stage actor. “Worry not, Mr. Tsuginaga. The Demon King of the Digital World shan’t harm a young man who thirsts for knowledge. If you want answers, I have them! I’m not called the Clown Prince of the Dark Area for nothing, after all!” The harlequin proudly claimed.

At some point, Sho could only grin and rub the back of his neck. The Tukaimon in him felt like these guys didn't really know what they were talking about, the Bastemon felt like stalking these two around would be fun, and the Griffomon was determined to keep him dignified and silent. Somewhere in between was Sho's actual thoughts, but in the end all he could do was try to speak them aloud. Maybe they could figure out when he was the one really talking? That'd be an interesting experiment... "Yeah...about that, I don't think I'd call it just 'channelling'. It's definitely something more intimate than that, well, d'oh! Wrong word. Let's just go with closer." He bashfully remarked, holding up the D-Tector that was merged with his form just moments before, a maroon device spotted with hearts. "That and I wouldn't exactly say I found it as much as it found me, but hey, I don't bite the hand that feeds." The shrug he gave was a massive understatement compared to the shock the arrival of his spirit gave him. To be honest, he wasn't sure what that hand But all the more interesting was this Jokermon; how often do you come by the king of an entire zone? It invited skepticism to say the least. "You're a king? Currently, as in right now? Do you rule over this place?" Sho certainly wasn't shy about giving him the third degree, his D-Terminal was already at the ready, fingers ready to fly across the keys. "Though, I suppose you can answer those questions later, I'm more interested in what either of you know about this sea crashing behind us...And if you have any opinions about people like me who are 'channelling' this ancient power. Unless I'm taking up important time, that is!" That kind of concern was most definitely Sho, without a doubt. What cared like this other than an anxious fifteen year old?

The young researcher was thrilled to hear of Jokermon’s title as ‘Demon King of the Digital World’. A rare occasion, really, in which someone was not annoyed or even miffed by the mad clown’s mad ego. The flamboyant Nightmare Soldier loudly cleared his throat, spread his arms widely and opened his mouth, as if he was about to break into a villainous song. Before he could sing the first lyric, however, he was crudely cut off by Yuko. “He’s not a real king, he just says he is. Ignore him.”
“Don’t tell him to ignore me! How can you ignore THIS?!” Jokermon protested with an exaggerated pout, while pointing at the phony yellow crown strapped around the base of his jester’s cap. Recomposing himself, he stood upright and addressed Sho’s question. “Anywho. The Sea of Blood… I suppose you could call it a pool for discarded data. Normally Digimon reincarnate back in the Village of Beginnings when they get killed, but sometimes they fail to reconstruct themselves and their leftover data winds up here. Such a tragic fate, is it not?” The self-proclaimed Demon King explained, his red lips curved once again into a wide grin.
“Hold on, can we address the whole humans turning into Digimon thing again?” Yuko interjected, taking a good look at the human boy and thinking back to what he looked like mere moments ago. “That Bastemon was clearly female. Doesn’t it feel… weird to be in her body?” She worriedly asked.

Sho began transcribing their conversation on his D-Tector. It was definitely a far more objective way at looking at it seeing as he'd still have to go back to the library and compile this whole thing. He entertained their questions in silence, giving small 'hm's and 'uh-huh's in approval whilst he typed. Yuko's question was the one that made him look up from his screen, pondering quite pensively for a few moments while he worked out how to illustrate it with his hands. "The short answer is no, but, since I was already planning to educate some people based on my own experience, try thinking of it this way." Sho began, nodding to himself and pointing a finger at Yuko. "Imagine that you were me in my own body. Would that feel weird? While at first glance, anyone would say 'Yes, of course!', it isn't that simple. After all, why would I feel weird in my own body? If I don't feel weird in my body, and you become me, then you wouldn't feel weird at all. You'd feel like you had this body forever because you'd be me." He swiftly explained, barely pausing, almost without much breath. It was a quite rehearsed little spiel. Sho saved his deep breath for when he splayed his hand upon his heart and began to pose another question. "What generates the strange feeling is getting used to not being yourself. If you became me, then who's the one thinking? Who's sitting in the driver's seat? I've come to terms with that the minute I harnessed the power of those totems, I made them a part of me." He sighed, his eyes swiftly darting about as he began moving into a more pensive expression. The only continuation he had was a mumble he tried to make as understandable as possible. "If you know anyone like me, their milage is going to vary. I suppose it's all related to what spirits you have and how intact their totems are, as well as the power of said totems..." Sho went back to typing on his D-Tector, turning to face the Sea of Blood the Jokermon was describing. He clicked through notes and pages of previous experiences and came up with a few questions of his own. "If this sea is merely constructed of discarded data, why is it recorded as such a danger to touch? What's the difference between this data and say, the data I take into my core from a defeated Digimon, or the data I retrieve using my D-Tector? And while we're on the subject..." Sho turned back around, pushing up his glasses and crossing his arms towards the girl's partner. "How much do you know about those ancient totems? I've only heard a description that detailed once before." His curiosity was so severe that he almost sounded like an interrogator saying all that.

The boy’s explanation of how his questionable transformation into a Digimon worked was a bit winded and esoteric. Most of what Yuko got out of it was that Sho and Bastemon essentially became of one body and soul, which was an explanation she could somewhat buy in this bizarre world where nothing made scientific sense. “Okay, I get that… I guess. But, it doesn’t seem like something you could just get used to. I mean, suddenly having cat ears, claws… and boobs?! That’s a pretty big change. How long have you been doing this?” The delinquent girl asked, trusting Sho’s judgement, but still feeling a bit uneasy over the whole concept.
Jokermon chimed in next, gladly answering more of the young researcher’s questions. “Allow me to explain further. The data might have been corrupted by the Dark Area’s negative influence, destroying any sense of identity and intellect, but it still retains enough sentience to fight for its survival. And if they find a lifeform with a more stable data structure - like say, a curious cat trying to take a dip in the red sea - that’s their one way ticket to get a new body, even if they end up as a hideous abomination, so of course they would latch unto it with everything they’ve got.”
As for Sho’s question about where the Spirit Totems had come from, the flamboyant jester chuckled confidently. “Hm hm hm… It’s a very old tale, but it goes something like this: Long ago, there were legendary warriors who did battle, either for the thrill of it, or to protect the Digital World from villains less handsome than me. When they perished after a life filled with extraordinary feats, their bodies turned into totems. Buuut, they still had plenty of fight left in them, so they slept underground for thousands of years, waiting for someone worthy of awakening their ancient powers.” Yuko crossed her arms in front of her chest, pondering this explanation. “Ancient powers hidden away to be discovered by someone worthy… So, they’re kinda like Digi-Eggs?” “Bingo~!” The jester exclaimed, putting his pointer finger up.

Sho honestly should've expected this. But then again, if he hadn't shifted back, they probably would've just ignored him by now. He stared at Yuko for a good two seconds while he counted on his fingers, finally coming up with "Well, in February it'll be around a year, but I really haven't been counting. It honestly really has felt like forever, especially when you have to go looking for these totems in the most decrepit places! I've been hanging from vines, dumped in a river...I went through a gauntlet one time." He started counting off all those challenges on the other hand before he remembered what she was actually asking. "All of that to say it's really easy to forget all that when you have to run around and live like a Digimon in some cases...Even though Bastemon likes to show off more than the others." It seemed like he was trying to look just about everywhere else while he was talking about it. Not even Sho knew how to feel about an ancient cat lady's habits. Jokermon's explanations were a great escape from those bashful feelings, especially since it just begged even more questions. Especially the link the totems had to those ancient warriors. By now he was sure that his fingers were going to light on fire from how much he was trying to get onto the text file. "Their identities and intellect have eroded, eh? It'd probably near impossible to recover that data, but was there ever any recorded material that was impervious to it? It seems characteristically odd that this is a sea without any sailing, which I could only assume is because everything here could be called a 'stable data structure'. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious about what could be hidden down there, so I have to at least question most possibilities..." Sho pondered, worriedly narrowing his eyes towards the sea. For a moment he wondered if even a spirit user could make it down there...A question to pose once he actually published this journal of his.

Yuko listened to Sho explaining how long he had been using his Spirit Totem, nodding in understanding every now and then. “Woah, I see… That’s almost 8 months. It’s a long time, definitely. You and Bastemon have been through a lot, huh?” Even so, the part of him physically transforming into an entirely different gender was still a bit weird, but it also touched on some pretty sensitive topics that Yuko would rather not question, so she dropped the issue once she had gotten a satisfactory answer.
While the female delinquent contemplated those possibilities, the young researcher was restless and eager to know more about the Sea of Blood and its secrets. “Not to burst your bubble, kid, but unless someone dropped a treasure at the bottom of the ocean by accident, you will find nothing here but pain and misery.” Jokermon gave him the cold, straight facts.
Ah, but that wasn’t fun at all! Like a true trickster, he felt the urge to fill the boy with false hope. “On the other hand, there’s no evidence that someone did NOT drop a treasure at the bottom of the ocean by accident! Maybe you’ll be the first lucky adventurer to find it!” The villainous clown cheered Sho on, pumping his gloved fist in the air to encourage him.

Sho nodded with a great deal of satisfaction, reminiscing on everything that got him to this point once he got to closing his eyes for a moment. "Yeah, it's probably been just about double that time because of how digital time works, and I've still got a long way to go to make the lady in my head happy." He grinned about the sentiment, trying to keep himself from wincing. "I'm sure you've traveled quite a ways with this Royal rascal, right?" Sho remarked quite ironically, seeing as he'd just said the most serious thing he'd said all day. Sho paused, and he paused for a good while while he walked to Jokermon's front and gave him a good look in the eye. People didn't normally change tone so quickly, did they? It's the kind of maneuver someone in a novel makes when they're trying not to give a full serving of reality, as if they'd read the mood and decided to fall back into a different conversation. "Well, the treasures I'm looking for are the knowledge of what is and what once was, and right in front of me?" He turned around to the sea, beginning to take a few careful steps towards it as he spoke. "It looks like that checks off both boxes!" He exclaims with his arm extended towards the red, viscous blood before he started typing on his D-Terminal again. "If something in the environment caused this corruption, engineering a way to take a sample of the data away would be the first step to recovering it. If there's a way to construct a device...to safely come into contact with it...to analyze and cleanse it, there's something behind all that pain and misery. Perhaps even retrievable life, or at the very least history of what that life was. That's a treasure trove of information on its own. Not just a trove...an entire sea!" Sho smirked a little, feeling like he'd reached a little bit of a conclusion on this part of his report. If he could construct a plan to do all this, it'd be golden! "And I don't think I would've thought of it without you, really. So I thank you a bunch for your information on the place...As for anything else, I'm still happy to entertain any questions you have about other totem hunters like myself. Or if you've seen any other ones..." He continued, feeling quite pleased with himself.

“Riiiiight… Digital time. I totally knew about this!” Yuko nervously claimed, a small bead of sweat appearing on her forehead. “Actually… I’ve only known Jokermon for about a week. Or maybe two weeks? I’m not even sure anymore…” The girl admitted. To think that Sho had experienced a lifetime’s worth of adventures, yet was still only a boy in his teens… Was she gonna end up like him too? On one hand, becoming a badass adventurer over time was an alluring thought, but would she be able to go back to her normal life when all this was over?
The overly ambitious researcher gazed at the Sea of Blood, daydreaming out loud of how he was going to discover all of its secrets. At the same time, he thanked Jokermon for his help, to which the clown bowed once again. “Glad I could be of assistance. If you’re interested in the more esoteric aspects of the Digital World, you could also ask my old pal Wisemon… if you can find him, that is. He knows more things than even I do!”
“That’s good, build a blood-proof submarine or something! Until you do that, can you stay away from the ocean of information that wants to eat you?” Yuko interrupted them, grabbing Sho by the arm and pulling him a few feet away from the shore. “Can’t say I’ve met any other totem users, by the way. I’ve met a few other Digimon Tamers, but that’s it.” She also admitted.

Sho giggled a little at the thought of navigating this sea with a blood-proof submarine. Now that was certainly an extreme to reach! After all, he barely knew if anything could survive this sea at all. "Man, that'd be surreal. And I can only really get stuff done here on the weekends...or holidays! Holidays are the best." Sho smiled, hoping she'd find some humor in the short amount of time he mentioned. Wait a second...time? She still didn't know about digital time? "Yuko...you're telling me you never noticed how you can come to the digital world for a while and come back to time having barely moved? Every week here is a day outside. You can get seven times more things done!" Now that he was actually counting...if he calculated the amount of time he'd spent here in his head...God, no wonder it felt like forever, he'd been going back and forth after doing so much. "So have you spent two weeks in our time or two weeks in digital time? I mean, in two weeks our time, I'll probably have reported my findings on the zone and gone off to find Wisemon. But I don't think that's nearly enough time, really." He looked around with a slight scoff. If he was going to spend the next few weeks in the Digital World in this hell, he'd better make it count...
