EbiBurgamon was traversing the treacherous Server Woods on his lonesome. It was dangerous for a Rookie-level Digimon with next to no combat prowess to be out there all on their own. A wild predator could jump him at any moment, not to mention what would happen if that spooky rumor about a ghost haunting the forest turned out to be true. Yet, he had no other choice, since he needed to collect a type of berry that only grew in these woods.
The scared little burgeroid eventually found a lush green bush filled with berries. “Is this the one?” He wondered, reaching his hand out. “Watch it, kid! Don’t touch the goods!” A stuck-up voice suddenly sounded, and the bush moved, revealed to not be a bush, but the tail of an annoyed Deramon. “UWAAAAAH!! I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” Ebi screamed at the top of his lungs, and ran away as fast as he could. The Deramon didn’t give chase, but Ebi was too scared out of his wits to realize that.
Panting heavily after a long run, the little shrimp burger nervously looked around him and realized that he had been lost. He was still surrounded by large trees, but this was definitely not the same route he had taken in. “Where am I? I don’t wanna be here anymore… Waaaaaaaah!” The poor kid started crying, his loud wailing no doubt alerting any passerbys of his presence.

It wasn't every day that Kenny and Skadi would find themselves exploring the Server Woods, considering the more wilderness like nature of the area, but thanks to the D-Nexus and it's automapping abilities, exploring it was nothing but a cinch, with the pathway leading to Rosewood. Today, they were helping Odin to deliver a package once again, and Skadi's proven, but oh-so-crazy combat prowess, were all ready to keep whatever at bay the moment they showed up.
Speaking of, Kenny was now on the back of his partner's Canandenmon form, and by God did her wool make for such a comfortable seat. Not only did Skadi's immense amount of strength and stamina her primary forms shared make Canandenmon a great choice for exploration, but this was more than good practice to allow her to keep her higher forms for longer when the time came.
As they walked along, with Kenny looking at the D-Nexus' map, a loud cry made Kenny jump and the two other Digimon freeze in place. "What was that?" Kenny exclaimed in confusion, his heart beating a little faster in surprise. If anything, he was at least a little grateful it wasn't the sound of a hungry beast wanting to gobble them all up for lunch.
After a few moments (and a bit more crying), Skadi thought it over, "I think that must be the sound of a lost baby Digimon nearby. Odin, Kenny, you guys don't mind if we go help them out for a little bit, right?"
The Peckmon merely shrugged, "Eh. I've got all the time in the world. Don't want this to be hanging over my conscious for the rest of my natural days."
"Yeah, Odin's right." Kenny agreed, "Might as well kill some time and help somebody out today. After all, it wouldn't be right if we just up and left a little kid to die in the forest,"
"Great, then it's settled!" Skadi said with a grin. "Let's go!" And so, she trotted away to the source of the nose, with Odin quickly following behind and keeping up in quick place with the plucky Canandenmon and her Tamer riding on her back.
Following the sound of the cry, and trekking away from their intended path, they would come across an... admittedly weird-but-cute creature of a Digimon, an EbiBugermon, just sitting there and crying loudly, all by itself. When Kenny and Skadi approached them, the Rookie-level would be standing face to face with a gigantic Digimon practically towering over them, with a human riding on the back and a Peckmon standing by his side. Skadi lowered her head to get to the EbiBugermon's level to meet them face to face, with a friendly look. "Are you OK, little fella?" She asked.
Poor Ebi was bawling his eyes out, but he couldn’t help it. He was lonely, he was lost and he was scared. If a wild Digimon found him there, he was gonna become their snack, no questions asked. He was pathetically weak. Why had he even come to this forest? Perhaps he wasn’t cut out to be a cook in the first place. Of course, that thought only made him cry more. “Waaaaaaaah! Master Cookmon!”
Suddenly, the pink Burgamon variant heard a voice, and he turned around to see a big old goat whose hairy face stood inches away from his own. Not only that, but this Canandenmon had another weird-looking Digimon riding on its back. Oh, and there was a Peckmon there too. Bird Digimon were evil!
Naturally, their attempt at a friendly greeting went as well as one would expect… with EbiBurgamon screaming at the top of its tiny lungs, and running away as fast as his feet could carry him, which was actually surprisingly fast. “UWAAAAAH! Predators! Don’t eat me, don’t eat me, don’t eat me!” He hid behind a tree, looking at the so-called ‘predators’ with mortified beady eyes and a face still wet with tears. “I’m not tasty at all. P-please go away…”

So what was this about a 'Master Cookmon' this EbiBurgamon was going on about? Certainly that title sounded pretty fancy, all things considered. Maybe they took this Digimon under their wing, like with Valt to Skadi. But his voice and behaviour all pointed fingers to them being a little kid. Hey, nothing wrong with starting way early, but how did they get lost exactly? (
Unfortunately, Skadi's initial attempt to reassure the EbiBurgamon didn't exactly go pretty swimmingly, but who could blame the kid? Canandenmon was a freaking big and strong giant for a Champion level; her head was practically the size of the fun-sized Rookie-level's body, and the three could only watch as the kid ran away, presumably in shock. Skadi just paused for a brief moment before turning her head back to the boys, "Was it something I said?" The other 2 merely shrugged in confusion.
Regardless, only a few moments later, they would catch up with the EbiBurgamon, who was now hiding behind a tree in fear, begging for his life, putting a look of concern on all of their faces, especially Skadi, "What? What made you think we were going to eat you? We're actually just trying to help you. You do look a little lost, after all." She told the little Digimon sympathetically, before lowering her body to allow Kenny to climb down, which he promptly did to approach the EbiBurgamon.
Leaning down to get to the level of the relatively large-for-his-kind shrimp-like creature, Kenny tried to pet him to help reassure him, "Look, please calm down. We're not going to hurt you, but we need you to calm down. Please." The other two Champion level Digimon nodded to the EbiBurgamon, confirming they were all honest with their intentions to help however they could. But would he listen to them? Hopefully yes, at least. But they didn't exactly put on the best first impression out there.
“Y-you’re trying to… help me?” The EbiBurgamon sniffled, while tears fell from his beady eyes. “I… I AM lost! I came here looking for some berries, but then this big bird appeared and I was really scared, and now I don’t know the way back…” He explained how he had ended up there. Hearing that those bigger Digimon didn’t actually want to hurt him seemingly made him less tense, but he was still clearly wary of them, not yet leaving his hiding spot behind the tree.
When the weird-looking Digimon climbed off the Canandenmon and walked towards Ebi, the small burgeroid was a bit nervous at first, but the last of his worries evaporated the moment his burger-shaped head was petted. Ebi closed his eyes contently, smiling from his cat-like mouth. He even walked closer to Kenny to make his job of petting him easier. “Okay, I’ll calm down. Uhm… Mister? You look weird. What kind of Digimon are you?” The kid opened his eyes again, and tilted his head curiously.

Was the EbiBurgamon really that worried that the group was gonna eat him alive? Well, who could blame him, they just approached him right of out left field without warning, that would easily scare the shit out of any little kid. Regardless, Skadi nodded in response to hammer it in. But apparently, the EbiBurgamon was looking for 'berries', and got himself lost in the progress. That raised quite a few eyebrows; who exactly was 'watching' this kid, anyways?
Regardless, Kenny felt that little pang of happiness hit him when his bid to reassure the delightful decapod worked, and even Skadi and Odin felt a little glad themselves too. At least, until the EbiBurgamon asked what sort of Digimon Kenny was supposed to be. A startled look came over Kenny's face. That... was going to be interesting, to say the least.
"Well, I'm not actually a Digimon, to be honest with you," Kenny awkwardly chuckled while rubbing the back of his neck, "I'm actually a human. A Digimon Tamer, to be exact. I'm a human who's partnered to a Digimon to help them digivolve further to higher levels that they otherwise wouldn't normally, using this little thing right here." He pulled out the D-Nexus out of his pocket, to show it to the EbiBurgamon, "It's called a Digivice. It's main purpose is to let the Digimon reach higher levels than they normally would. Honestly, I'm surprised you never encountered a human, let alone a tamer, yet. I thought with them being so frequent here in the Digital World, you were bound to come across one sooner rather than later."
Ah well, whatever. Kenny just shrugged a little nonchalantly as he continued, "Anyways, I guess we gotta introduce ourselves. I'm Kenny, and that's my partner, Skadi." He gestured to the giant grinning Canandenmon, and then to his feathered friend, who gave the EbiBurgamon a friendly wave, "And that Peckmon over there's Odin. He's a deliveryman and we usually help him out when he has a delivery to take on. Me and Skadi tend to work to keep him safe at all costs to ensure the package is safely delivered, and both of us are members of this really big organisation named KIZNA. We were actually just making our way to Rosewood right now to make the delivery, but we willingly decided to take a bit of a detour to help you out today."
Speaking of, it was time for Kenny to make his proposition, "You did say you were looking for berries, right? Well, we can help you out with that. Does that sound good, kid?" He asked. Kenny and Skadi were always one to stick their nose in any situation no matter what, but hey, as long as they were doing good by someone, why did it matter?
“A Hu-mon…?” The young EbiBurgamon naively tilted his head, staring up at Kenny with his big, glistening, beady eyes. His dot-shaped mouth soon turned into a cat-like smile. “Oh, I remember hearing about this! Humon have boobs. Wait, no… that’s female Humon only. Are you a female Humon?” He asked in the most genuinely innocent manner possible. Well, this had gotten awkward fast. It would be clear that this young Digimon had not only never encountered humans before, but the things he claimed to know about humans were plain wrong.
The part about humans being partnered with Digimon he did understand at least, even if he didn’t quite get how that helped them Digivolve faster, other than being shown a strange device that supposedly had something to do with it. “Okay, I see… Hi, Kennymon’s friends. I’m EbiBurgamon, but you can call me Ebi. Nice to meet you, everyone.” The young burgeroid waved at the two bigger Digimon, blushing from his adorable pink cheeks. He seemed to no longer be afraid of them.
Ebi’s smile only brightened when ‘Kennymon’ offered to help him find those berries he was looking for. “You’ll help me for real? T-that would be great! Thanks, Mister.” The small Rookie happily said, hugging the Tamer’s leg. D’awwwww…

Kenny didn't really bother to try and correct the EbiBurgamon's apparent pronunciation of 'human', and for good reason; after all, he was still just a kid, in terms of both level and mentality, he had to cut him some slack... up until the Rookie-level flat out asked if he was a girl on the sole basis if he had breasts. Needless to say, Kenny was momentarily stunned as a small blush spread across his face, while Odin let out a slight chuckle at Kenny's expense. Luckily, Skadi was ready to clear the air.
"...actually, no. He's a guy. He doesn't have boobs." She said bluntly.
Other than that little speedbump, that introduction actually went rather smoothly for both sides, with the Rookie Digimon introducing themselves as - what else - Ebi. And, without as so much of a warning, had ran over and hugged his leg, catching him a little off guard. His surprised look quickly morphed into a smile, "Of course, Ebi. We're always happy to help." He reassured him, patting him on the head once again, before prying him off his leg and holding him in his arms. "And... just call me Kenny, OK? I just prefer to be called Kenny."
Walking back to Skadi with Ebi in his hands, the Canandemon instinctively lowered her body for the both of them to climb up onto. Considering the immense size difference between the two Digimon, Kenny held out Ebi close enough for him to climb onto the giant sheep proper, her wool soft and easy to grip if he needed to. Once he did, Kenny would follow suit, sitting behind Ebi on Skadi's soft and silky wool.
Now with both properly seated, and Skadi setting off, Odin following in turn, Kenny pulled out his D-Nexus once more, switching on the automap feature in the process, "Alright, now we're ready to go. I've scanned this entire place, so we can find our way very easily. But Ebi, can you please tell me what the berries you're looking for are exactly?" Simply put, Kenny wasn't psychic. While his D-Nexus could automatically identify Digital World ecology around entire areas, just what was Ebi looking for, anyways?
But all the while, Odin had a small smirk on his face, eyeing the tamer with a glint in his eyes, and a slight elbow to the ribs, "Heh. 'Kennymon'."
Ebi squirmed happily in response to yet another headpat, nuzzling his face against Kenny’s leg like a cat. “Okay, I’ll call you Kenny… Woah!” He was surprised when the male Humon pried him off his leg and picked him up. The feeling of his tiny legs leaving solid ground and dangling helplessly in the air made his heart rate accelerate, but Kenny’s gentle hold of him quickly reassured him. “P-please don’t drop me.” He pleaded with a slight blush, allowing Kenny to carry him in his arms.
Soon, they climbed on the back of the much taller Canandemon. Up there, Ebi got to see the world from a height he never had before, his small, circular mouth hanging open in awe. “Woah… I can see more forest from up here!” Even more impressive was how soft and fuzzy Canandemon’s wool was. Ebi didn’t resist the urge to pet it. It was so gooood…
Kenny’s voice snapped him out of it, asking him if he could tell them what the berry he was looking for looked like. “Oh… It’s called the Curry Berry. It’s brown and has a really strong flavor that makes it bad to eat on its own, but if you cook it together with other foods, it makes them tastier.” The young cook explained.

Kenny was practically used to the tall heights and the wide sights being on the back of Skadi's Champion form at this point. So watching Ebi's amazement of seeing the world around him like he never saw it before made him chuckle a little bit in amusement. Who could blame the little guy? All the while, Skadi felt a sense of the warm fuzzies in the stomach as Ebi pet her wool, letting out one soft happy bleat per pet. Somehow, despite the fact her bulk in battle could tank a lot of physical attacks, to the point of shrugging it off (just ask Ophelia), she had the innate ability to detect and feel pets, pats, and the like from friendlies, who knew?
So the berry they were looking for was a 'Curry Berry'? Well, after learning about the existence of meat apples to help Max the Impmon X cook his delectable curry, this just came as a mild surprise to him. "Ah, a Curry Berry. That sounds interesting. I'm sure they're around here somewhere nearby." He said, before inputting 'curry berry' into the D-Nexus to try and find the nearest, freshest source inside the forest. With any luck, the D-Nexus would be able to detect where the berries were. Once located, Kenny would be easily able to give directions to Skadi, so he, Skadi and Odin could go help Ebi find and pick out the berries.
But while the scanning was going on, now would be a good time for a little chitchat, considering things were relatively calm right about now, "So Ebi," Kenny asked, "Who is this 'Master Cookmon' anyways? Did he send you out to collect the berries or something?" He was just generally curious at this point, mainly because Ebi, after all, was still a little kid.
"Yeah. Why couldn't he just have joined you to help get the berries earlier? Wouldn't it be much more safer having someone to protect you when things go south quickly?" Skadi added, tilting her head a little in confusion. Surely 'Master Cookmon' wouldn't be dumb enough to just send his very young apprentice to gather ingredients in dangerous locations without rhyme or reason... right?
Seeing Kenny input a sequence of apocryphal words into his mysterious, otherworldly artifact got Ebi curious, turning his head back as much as a Burgamon could turn their head back - which, considering they had no bone structures of any description, was admittedly quite a lot. We’re talking about some Exorcist-level head-turning action right then and there! “What’s this?” He asked, while making the appropriate, cat-like expression to match this age-old question.
The tiny burgeroid shook his head at Kenny’s and Skadi’s line of questioning. “No, no. Master Cookmon didn’t send me here. I’m traveling alone. I used to live at the top of Master Cookmon’s restaurant, but he said that it was time for me to find my purpose and become a man. And I also wanted to leave, because I have to find this super special secret that my Mama and Papa left behind…” Ebi explained, facing the right way and frowning slightly at the mention of his parents, his wing-shaped ears dropping like a dog’s.
“Even though I’m traveling, I still need to gather ingredients to cook for other Digimon. I also need to cook for myself, ‘cause if I don’t eat food, I’ll starve and then I’ll die.” He added, very matter of fact-like.

Normally, Kenny would be happy to answer any questions or concerns that Ebi may have had... but in this case, just as he finished inputting, he quickly leapt back on the Canandenmon's back a bit away from him (leading to Skadi yelping in surprise) at the sight of... whatever the hell Ebi was doing right now. All he could let out was nothing more than a confused, and scared, "Uhhhh..." while staring at the Food Digimon, bewildered, still tightly clutching the D-Nexus in hand.
Odin, on the other hand, cringed at this quite horrifying sight in front of him. Being a seasoned explorer, he was practically used to disgusting, creepy, and generally unappealing appearances in his travels, but that didn't stop him from quickly catching up to where Ebi, and reaching out a wing to turn his head back the same way it came just to put it back to normal, "Please. Never do that again for the love of Yggdrasil." He lightly, but firmly scolded the Rookie level.
Thankfully, Ebi's response to/story about why he was going it alone was nowhere near as unintentionally traumatising. Which was good because by that time, Kenny had properly straightened himself up one more, and now could properly listen to what he had to say, while holding out his D-Nexus to check on the map. Turned out Master Cookmon had nothing to do with it, rather, this was all on his own volitation.
Seeing Ebi get a little sad, Kenny would lean over to give the walking shrimp a few strokes on the head, "I understand, Ebi," He reassured the little kid, "But you shouldn't be going out into places like this on your own, especially at such a young age. Wild Digimon tend to roam these places, and, well, they can be quite dangerous if you're not careful, to put it lightly."
"Truth be told, there's actually quite a lot of nasty Digimon out there, just as there are nice Digimon. I should know, having to deal with quite a few myself. At least by having someone with you to protect you from dangers, you'll at least have someone have your back. Just like with me and Skadi, my Digimon partner. Even though she's quite cheeky and mischievous at times, she has my back, and I have hers. And quite frankly, I love her for that." He added, while going on to stroke the back of his fluffy partner.
Hearing that made Skadi blush a little bit and smile, turning to the 2 Digimon for a brief moment, "Awww. I love you too, Kenny, you big doofus." Kenny couldn't help but chuckle at his partner's playful, teasing, but affectionate compliment. That bond was something special to the both of them. And while it was hard to explain why in just words, it was practically loud and clear for the world to hear. And neither would have it any other way.
The EbiBurgamon didn’t really understand why Kenny was so freaked out by his 180 degree head-turning, since for him contorting his own body in such a way was pretty normal. However, he did understand that Kenny was scared and that it was his fault. And that made him sad. “Okay, I won’t… Sorry for being scary…” The burger-capped kid apologized with a teary-eyed expression and a heart-wrenchingly sad tone, making Kenny look like the bad guy there!
He quickly cheered up, however, when the human petted his head again, his frown turning upwards into a content smile. He also warned the aspiring young cook of the dangers of going out alone, something that Ebi himself knew about first-hand. “I know. I ran into a Deramon earlier that tried to eat me!” Of course, our readers know that the Deramon had never actually tried to harm him, but Ebi had been too scared at the time to realize, and Kenny and Skadi had no way of knowing. Dramatic irony!
“It might be dangerous and scary, but I’ll never become a real cook if I don’t take risks. At least that’s what Master Cookmon said. And I do have friends to protect me. You are my friends!” The tiny burgeroid happily declared, smiling a smile so bright it could illuminate this entire forest. D’awwwww~

"Uh, no, it's OK Ebi." Kenny muttered a little, still a little worried and feeling a little guilty for inadvertently guilt tripping a little kid. Of all the things that quickly caught him off guard in recent times, a seemingly harmless Rookie-level Digimon able to disobey basic biology that even Ultimate and Mega level Digimon would be able to follow to a T just so happened to be one of them.
God it felt weird to be the alien.
But regardless, his reassurance had thankfully worked like a charm, and he and Odin listened intently to what Edi had to say. Did a Deramon really try to eat him? That normally tranquil Digimon that wouldn't hurt a fly? Admittedly it was a little hard to blame him for thinking that way, considering they were Ultimate-level Digimon, and he was only Rookie. And in a forest this big, it wouldn't exactly be easy for someone that young to discriminate friend from foe, as Kenny and Skadi learned the hard way.
Still, Ebi had made a very good point. Taking risks was important to achieving goals in life. After all, in Kenny and Skadi's case, them opting to stay and confront the Golden Week situation head-on by partaking in a peaceful protest as part of KIZNA rather than turn tail and run had rewarded them greatly. But much to his surprise (and slight embarrassment, if the blush on his face was anything to go by, making Odin silently chuckle once more), Ebi had called them his friends. Not a moment later, a smile adorned Kenny's face.
"I... um... thank you, Ebi." He simply said. Knowing that just made this little fetch quest for the little EbiBurgamon all the more worthwhile. Still, there seemed to be no sign of the berries anywhere so far. But frankly, just being with this little kid a little longer would feel all the more rewarding. Yes, it did sound a little selfish, but he now felt even more incentive to help any way he and the group could.
“Mhm, you’re welcome!” Ebi hummed and nodded happily in response to Kenny. Him accepting his friendship meant that they were officially friends now, as far as the young Burgamon species understood it. “You’re the first Humon I’ve met. My friends warned me that there are some bad Humon called Old DATS, who were really mean, but Mister Kenny is a nice Humon. And Mister Odin is a big bird, but he’s nice too, unlike the bad Deramon that tried to eat me. And Miss Skadi looked really big and scary at first, but she’s the nicest of all, and her fur is so soft I could sleep on it… but I wouldn’t, because we still have work to do.”
One had to wonder why the little Rookie had gotten so chatty all of a sudden, yet some of the things he mentioned would be intriguing, such as name-dropping DATS. Did he even know what that was? Ebi proceeded to pet Skadi’s wooly head with a bright smile on his face, giggling as if everything was right with the world. “Hahaha, you’re so fluffy!”
