Strands of Seaweed [Ebi/Open]
|
Post by Higgs on Nov 19, 2019 11:18:48 GMT
Just another day for the Southern residents and the tourists to enjoy their day on the beach. Truly, this is the best place to spend a vacation. While it might be getting quite hot sometimes, it's quite bearable rather than dry air and sands on the west. It's a refreshing sight for this Keramon.
Quite different from any other Keramons, for he wears a piece of brownish cloth that covers his body that mostly consist of creepy tendrils. While it's not favorable by the others to wear clothes on the beach, this Keramon decides to keep his cloak on. It's not like he come to this place for a swim, anyway.
What intrigues the stray Digimon right now is the part of the beach that is filled with strands of seaweed that have been washed up by the tides. Curiously, he look at them one by one, picking them to inspect the texture and the salty smell, before deciding to have a taste of them.
Fascinated, he cackled with pure joy, his garbled and distorted voice fills the air. He decides to eat more of the seaweed as he find them delicious and might be just right to fulfill his hunger.

A bunch of seaweed being washed up at the beach might have been seen as an inconvenience by any beachgoers who were hoping to do some sunbathing in one of binary Archipelago’s many tropical islands. To a cook in training like Ebi, however, this was not an inconvenience, but an opportunity to gather some fresh cooking ingredients free of charge! And the best part was that he’d get to do that at a sunny beach, instead of a dark, scary forest filled with hungry predators, or a treacherous, snow-capped mountain, where the slightest breeze could sweep him off his feet.
The EbiBurgamon liked the beach a lot. While he didn’t know how to swim (ironic, considering he was half-shrimp) running along the coastline in shallow waters was equally fun, giggling as the waves splashed against his chubby lower body. “Heeheehee… It tickles!” However, he was quick to celebrate his fun little outing, as it soon turned out that he wasn’t alone on this beach…
A Keramon had arrived there beforehand, and was taking its time picking the seaweed off the ground and eating it raw. Keramon were scary. Something about their tentacles, their unblinking eyes, their shrill laughter… everything, really. The young Burgamon approached it as cautiously as he could, having half a mind to start running away if it turned out that smaller Digimon were also part of the Keramon’s diet. “H-hello… D-do you like seaweed? Y-you shouldn’t eat it raw, you know…” He shakily spoke to get the creature’s attention.

Just like having the most luxurious meal ever, the Keramon continues consuming the washed-up seaweeds with reckless abandon, but carefully munching them just so the salty, savory taste lasts longer on his mouth. As if the ocean itself happy that one of the dwellers enjoy the blessing that it gives, more strands of seaweed are washed up the shore, providing more food for the overjoyed Keramon.
In the middle of putting a pile of seaweed on his seemingly bottomless mouth, he heard a small, meekly voice that suggested to not eating these plants raw. He immediately stopped his activity and turns his attention carefully, trying to not creeping out the other being that approached him just now. But as any Keramon should've been. No matter how good they are, no matter how hard they try, it seems they can't just not act without being creepy in the process, for they are the creepy type of Digimon in the first place. But at least, this cloaked Keramon tried.
"O-oh! Hello there!"
The Keramon can tries to act nice, but there are things that are out of his control, like his distorted, garbled and high-pitched voice. It sounds as if a noisy kid is speaking through a broken microphone, and the speaker has too many static noises to produce the vocal output. Outright creepy from the start.
"Yes, i do love seaweed! I just thought they are as good as sashimi that just served fresh out of the water!"
Keramon gave the best smile he could give: a smile wide enough to make his face split. Now that he got a good look on the Digimon, he noticed the pink creature with burger-shaped hat is one of those kinds that are quite rare. Who thought that there is a Burgamon subspecies wandering around the beach?
"But yeah, maybe the seaweed should be boiled or dried first. Am i right?"
Before the pink Burgamon could remark on Keramon's association of fresh seaweed with sashimi, Keramon tries to reaffirm the correct way to enjoy this washed-up delicacy.

Yup, Keramon were scary, even when they were trying not to be. The one in question tried to smile to show that it was friendly, but all Ebi saw was a mouth full of teeth, big enough to swallow him whole. He was unnerved for sure, squirming lightly and taking a step back. Still, the other was trying to be nice, so he was to try his best too. He had learned that it was impolite to assume that every Digimon larger than him wanted to eat him. Sure, they were digital monsters, but they weren’t monsters.
Besides, the Keramon had mentioned sashimi, and having worked as a cook in a seafood restaurant, EbiBurgamon was familiar with how that dish was prepared. “Y-yes, depending on the type, seaweed only needs to be dipped in boiling water for a few seconds, then marinated with wasabi soy sauce. But, you also need raw fish meat in order to make sashimi, since that’s the main ingredient.” The tiny pink creature explained, picking up a piece of seaweed himself and examining it for its quality.

This mon is definitely has experience with cooking. Or maybe, it worked at restaurant. As far as the Keramon knows, Burgamon are the kinds of Digimon that has affinity to be a good cook and a good businessmon. It's in their core. The explanation of seaweed and sashimi is truly fascinating. The creepy Digimon decided to keep the urge to eat at bay and let this Burgamon fill the curiosity that got him about the delights of seafood.
"Ooooh... fish and soy sauce! Delicious! Delicious! Just hearing them makes me excited!"
The other thing that makes the Keramon excited is how the pink burger creature took a strand of seaweed and looking at it as if trying to determine if it's worthy to be eaten or not. Well... a good food comes from good-quality ingredients. That much is a common sense for every Digimon. Unless you're a mutant Digimon who have distorted sense of taste. Poor them.
"I guess i have to agree with you about cooking the seaweed first. Now i can taste the sand inside my mouth. Kek!"
Joyfully, the Keramon states an agreement with the little fella over there. His bugged programming core sometimes mess up with his personality. But the Keramon tries his best to hold his laughter and not making it too creepy.
After that, he eagerly takes another strand of seaweed, but this time he carefully rubs it to get rid of the beach sands that scattered around the plant just like the tiny grains of salt sprinkled on it. But it seems he rubbed it a bit too strong that it ruins the texture of the seaweed and turned it to pieces.
"Ouch... maybe i should be soak these in water instead of manually rubbing them."

The Keramon admitted that picking the seaweed off the ground and eating them raw had been a bad idea in hindsight, noting how they now tasted sand inside their mouth and… laughing about it?! “Please stop laughing, this isn’t funny. Sand is bad. Sand is not food. It’s rough, and coarse, and its gets everywhere.” Including a Digimon’s mouth, as was already established.
This was certainly a weird character. It took a moment for Ebi to even notice the brownish cloak they wore. “Your cape looks pretty. Where did you get it?” The burger boy curiously asked. He understood how some mons liked to keep certain pieces of clothing that had sentimental value to them. His own apron was a gift from his mentor, Master Cookmon, so he could empathize if this cloak also had some deep or emotional story behind it. Or maybe Keramon wore it just to look cool.
Seeing Keramon struggle to clean the seaweed, Ebi decided to help them with some amount of hesitation. He still wasn’t sure if they were trustworthy enough. If it was okay to get closer to them. “U-uhm… Yes, you should soak them in the water first. Like this…” He demonstrated by dipping his piece of seaweed into the shallow water, gently brushing it to get the sand off.

"I'm sorry. I know my kind are among the wacky species of Digimons. But you know it's hard to change something that has been a part of you since being an egg."
The Keramon replied the pink Burgamon's concern, trying hard to emulate a perfect, calm and composed voice. It's really hard to maintain a composure in this form. But the most important thing about communication is honesty. Even if the emotions are emulated, if the mon's intention is real, that's all that matters. At least, that's what preoccupying his thought at the moment he tries to being friendly with this Burgamon. Genuinely.
Realizing now the Burgamon has shifted the attention to the cloak, Keramon replied straight to the point.
"How did i got this... is quite a long story. But i believe you would agree an extra piece of cloth would keep you warm in a place as cold as the snowy mountains far north. This also works in the desert too, supposedly protecting me from the heat stroke and the dusts."
The Burgamon then demonstrate how to wash off the sands from the strands of seaweed with the sea water. Those small hands are pretty nimble, if the buggy Digimon have to say. Quite different from his limbs that sometimes erratically trembles without no apparent reason aside from the hard-coded bug in his system. But that's no excuse to not trying exactly just like how the little burger did. So the Keramon tries to imitate the exact same movement and process, and got the exact same result of a clean, fresh seaweed.
"Hey! It tastes different! Thank you, thank you!"
Keramon enthusiastically nods repeatedly to shows satisfaction of a fresh seaweed taste without the sand, and as a gratitude to the Burgamon who taught him the correct way to eat the seaweed.
"I don't mind telling the long history of this cloak, if you have the time."
The cloaked Keramon decided to share his story. This is his most favorite moment of all time, because, usually he get acquainted with other Digimons with this trick. A little change of details here and there to suit his listener, and then suddenly they are interested to talk more and more.
Hope this little fella don't mind hearing a long story.

Ebi hadn’t realized that being creepy was essentially in Keramon’s nature, and that it was taking every bit of effort out of them to try to act like a ‘normal’ Digimon. In fact, his black, beady eyes widened at that realization, not so much out of shock or horror, as from feeling pity for the poor creature. “Oh… It’s okay, it’s not your fault…”
Under different circumstances, he would have tried to hug the Keramon to make them feel better, but he didn’t feel that comfortable around them yet. Ebi tended to make new friends easily, but he was still shy and constantly afraid of every little thing, as if the world itself was out to get him.
At the same time, he tended to warm up more quickly to people the more he knew about them, and hearing a story was a great way to get started. “Y-yes! I would love to hear the story. I don’t mind if it’s long, I have plenty of time. I wanna hear the story, pleeeeease?” The tiny burgeroid pleaded. What kind of heartless creature could ever say no to those big, adorable puppy dog eyes of his!

Seeing a bit of change in the Burgamon's tone is a good start. The Keramon starts telling his story as he washes some more seaweed for his consumption. After learning the fact that washed seaweeds are better than ones that mixed-up with sands, he won't just stop washing them before eating. While it's seemingly just a simple fact that perhaps anyone with common sense could do this, not every Keramon have a perfectly working common sense, so don't act so surprised that discovering new things that are supposed to be normal and nothing out of the ordinary could be something big and important for them.
It's shown from the eyes of the Burger mon that it is just as curious as Keramon, albeit in different matter. Nevertheless, curiosity is still a curiosity, Keramon knows very well that it has to be done. So he starts telling his story with no hesitation.
"Before i ended up here, i live in Dark Area for quite a long time. Definitely not a good place to live. Whatever you heard about the Dark Area, the stories are partly true."
Whatever story the other mon has told to the others, mostly are partial truth that had their details omitted or added. Just like what this Keramon was about to tell.
"I was like the other residents of Dark Area: Cruel and Selfish. But eventually i just hate that kind of lifestyle and tried to leave that place. Easy to say, but i nearly lost my life just because i want to get out from that place. The others were not so lucky."
The Keramon paused, thinking about telling this little fella how he get away from the chaotic lifestyle in Dark Area or straight to his adventures around the outside world.
"I escaped the Dark Area with a bat Digimon, and since then we traveled together, until that little fella decided to pursue her dreams at Terminus. While i, i didn't really have anything in particular that time... just want to live."
Another brief pause until he kind of exhaled his irregular breath.
"That was, until i met this Digimon. He wore a robe that had the same color as this cloak. He taught me to the joy of knowledge and the joy of sharing it to the others. He even gave me a name to distinguish me from the other Keramons."
"And... to be honest i still don't have particular goal until now. I just wander around Digital World to find anything that would satisfy my curiosity of this world. But maybe, if i find the Great Library, i would stop wandering around. The Library might answer all of my questions..."
He still not sure whether to keep it like this or continue, but he'll decide that based on the Burger's reaction.

Ebi sat down on the sand all comfortable like, smiling a content, cat-like smile. He sure was eager to listen to Keramon’s story, but the way they began wasn’t quite to his liking for a valid reason. “The Dark Area? Oh no, I’ve heard some scary stories about that place… Is this gonna be a scary story too? Please don’t let it be a scary story…” The poor kid shivered, clutching his burger-shaped hat tightly, an almost reflexive reaction he had whenever he got nervous.
Thankfully, it wasn’t a scary story. It actually had a happy ending, where Keramon escaped the Dark Area with his friend, and then made another friend, who allegedly taught him everything he knew. “I see. So, that Digimon was your mentor, right? I have a mentor too. His name is Master Cookmon. He raised me and taught me how to cook. I don’t know where that Great Library is, but… knowledge is important, and so is having a mentor!” Ebi said, nodding.
The young cook then picked up another piece of seaweed, which he cleaned diligently, before offering it as a treat to the tentacled glutton. “Please tell me more about your mentor. What name did he give you?” He asked, sitting back down on the sand.

"I guess we have something in common then. What a fascinating coincidence."
The Keramon giggled a bit, now much more controlled compared to his previous cackles. Still sounds quite unnerving, though. Hopefully the Burgamon would get used to this routine soon enough. But truly, the Keramon is fascinated that he met someone with a same story, albeit from different backgrounds, and ended with different outcomes. But Keramon believed this Burgamon raised in a good upbringing. It quite picked his interest, but digging a past is something quite sensitive, and he prefer to not getting too close at this pace, considering how shy the Burgamon at the first moment they met.
"Let's see... he was quite a teacher. He went from village to village just to open free schools for any Digimon that he met by chance. He was also very fond of books and he actually let me borrow many of his books!"
The buggy Digimon paused for a bit, trying to relive the best moment of his life, rewinding the experience and gathering the most relevant words to describe that experience. Because genuine feeling is something that this Keramon lacked.
"Long story short... i was helping him around, teaching some Digimons that attended his school. And i got schooled myself for that matter. I have to say, learning new things and sharing them to the others are fun. Sometimes i don't even feel hungry when i do that! Heheh..."
Keramon stopped for a bit, for no particular reason. Maybe just catching a breath in-between the long talks.
"But eventually he parted ways with me too, telling me that i'm ready to go anywhere on my own. And he left me some notes. One of those notes mentioned The Great Library! Maybe he left some big treasure for me, but i have to find it on my own. Who knows...? He's quite... odd and eccentric, if i have to say."
He stopped his tracks again, but this time he just realized that the Burgamon asked what name that was given to him by the wise Digimon. Name that would distinguish him from any other Keramons out there. Keramon approached the pink fella before extending his hands for a handshake while introducing his name.
"Oh yes, oh yes... i forgot to introduce my name! Very well! Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Higgs! Nice to meet you!"
While touching the Keramons will still give the uncanny feeling, hopefully it won't be that bad for Higgs. Since he already told this fella his story. Besides, he learned how to eat seaweed properly because of this fella. Probably they will cook for him, too! Higgs have downloaded some cookbooks from the Internet. Might as well trying to put them into use!

The young EbiBurgamon leaned forward, resting his head on his tiny hands with a content smile, all the while he happily listened to the continuation of Keramon’s story. They explained that their mentor was a traveling scholar, who stopped in each town he visited to teach the local Digimon for free. “Your mentor sounds like a very nice Digimon. Master Cookmon once told me that if he could serve food for free, he would, because a cook’s duty is to make people smile.”
The Keramon then explained how their mentor had sent them off on an adventure of their own. “I hope you find this Great Library one day. Master Cookmon also sent me off, saying that it was time for me to explore the world. To stop being a child and become an adult.” Little did Ebi know that by ‘adult’, his mentor actually meant that he needed to reach Champion level. To become a strong, independent mon who don’t need other mon to defend him!
Finally, the Keramon introduced themselves as Higgs. The burgeroid chuckled lightly at that. “Heehee… That’s a funny name! My name is Ebi. Nice to meet you too.” The kid said, hesitating somewhat to touch Higgs’ hand at first, but mustering enough courage to eventually accept the handshake.

What amounts to the joy of sharing compared to self-satisfaction? It's when seeing the brightest smiles from the people whom we shared with. The Burgamon's master sounds like a mon that would get along just well with his master, for they share the same views and words regarding the secret of happiness. They also share the same method to let their pupils continue on their own when deemed ready. Maybe Master Cookmon and the wise Digimon are the same mon? That's just his silly thought, but Higgs is fascinated with the idea that he shared some things in common with this pink fella. Apparently, they introduced themselves as Ebi.
Once Ebi accepted Higgs' offer to shake hands, the cloaked Keramon enthusiastically shook both hands. A bit too enthusiastic because he just made a new friend. But he quickly gain control of his over-excitement and releases his grip in a normal pace, to not startle Ebi too much.
"I-i'm sorry! I'm a bit too excited when meeting a new friend, especially someone nice like you, Ebi!"
Higgs paused for a bit, trying to find the right word to express this without giving Ebi hard feelings. They just met moments ago and it will be a shame if Higgs suddenly jumping the gun too soon.
"You know how bad the others can be. But justifying it to be as bad as them is something i'm not very fond of."
But to think again, for a mon named after a shrimp, this fella must be closely related to the sea or seafood. Not that Higgs wanted to put Ebi into his mouth. The idea is funny, though. But if Ebi found out about this idea they might just run away and never came back.
"My master said my name is after a particle that... is exist around us, but is so tiny that we barely know it actually exist. Quite funny, if i have to say."
Higgs chuckled a bit, remembering how his master referred him as an existence that permeates the other existence because of the skills he have prior meeting his master, something genuinely dark and creepy that is still a part of him.
"Your name is quite funny too, if i may say. We do have a lot in common, i guess! Kekekeke!"

“Woooooooah-!” The EbiBurgamon let out a long, shocked, shaky wail, as Higgs’ overly enthusiastic handshake rocked his smaller, nearly weightless body, his feet even lifting off the ground as he flailed in mid-air, holding onto the Keramon’s larger hands for dear life. He jumped down after the handshake was over, catching his breath. “It’s… okay… I think you’re nice too.” He nodded at their apology. Still, Ebi would be more careful about accepting handshakes in the future thanks to this incident.
The young cook also nodded at Higgs explaining that their mentor had named them after some kind of particle that was invisible to the naked eye, although he didn’t quite understand what that meant. “I see… I think. You usually can’t see what seasonings have been put into a dish either, but they still exist.” Actually, when using a cooking metaphor, he realized that it was much easier to understand what his new friend was talking about. “Wait, how is my name funny?” Ebi then asked, tilting his head curiously.

Higgs just realized that his over-excitement made Ebi flailed in mid-air as they desperately holding on his hand. Sometimes he just too excited that he forgot about how small Ebi is. The Keramon hopes that the handshake didn't left a deep trauma on the burger mon.
"Your name just sound that funny. Also reminded me of that Shrimp Digimon. What was it again... oh, an EbiDramon! Maybe someday you will evolve to an EbiDramon!"
Higgs giggled at that though that the pink burger mon will evolve into a Dramon with shrimp body and crab pincers. But hey, Digivolution is something with endless possibilities. Even this Keramon surprised himself when he managed to reach Ultimate level and turned into a Wisemon rather than the usual Infermon or any diabolical-looking Digimons. Maybe the wise Digimon's tutelage is permanently staying inside his Digicore and influencing it so much that he tried to mimic his master in any way he could.
"Oh... i like how you understand my master's words. Although you use different words, essentially it's the same thing! It's not visible but it's there!"
Higgs nodded to himself, satisfied with how Ebi somehow can relate with him in one way. It's just a matter of perspective.
"Say... you're a cook, right? How about we cooking together right now? I'll help with whatever i could do! Besides, we have so many washed-up seaweed here! We could make something out of them!"
Higgs proposed an idea to Ebi, hoping that cooking and eating together would help them get along better and probably discovering new things about themselves. Besides, now the Keramon just summoned his data repository in a form of tablet that seemingly encased in white plastic body. If Ebi know about smartphones beforehand, this device looks exactly like those.
"I have lots of data regarding food... but i never actually try to cook them myself. I'm not that good at cooking and most of the time i'm satisfied with roasted meat. But maybe you can introduce me to the wonders of culinary world!"
