The Price of Power [Alejandra, Yui, Ophelia]

Whitewater reminded her of Ica. It had everything: the beaches, the sun, the lively atmosphere. Japan felt like a disordered grey patch of buildings and roads in comparison. And yet, her mood wasn't the best. She sat on the bench by the promenade, lightly swinging her feet until they touched the ground, dragging them under the bench, then repeating the process in reverse. The sound of her soles rubbing against the sandy tiles helped her think - or at least that's what she believed. Meeting Ritsuko and her Digimon taught her there were not only different worlds to get accustomed to, but different ways of handling an interpersonal relationship. Or inter-creature relationship, she thought. Not only that: she had believed bonds to involve strictly a pair of people, and no more; triangles were not considered at all. That was another mistake. Maybe it's just inexperience in handling social situations, she thought. Her gaze lifted from the ground to the near-perfect flatness of the sea's horizon, the morning sun still making his way towards noon. She had realised her knowledge about the real world was minimal, and all it took was a peek at another, entirely new world; she didn't actually know what Digimon were, since they didn't look like just some AI with a physical avatar which was her second best guess - the first being that those she saw were just children in a costume. That was also a big mistake on her part. But she couldn't really blame herself for it, for once. The hell did she know, after all. She sighed loudly, reaching for her backpack; she grabbed the toy cellphone and took a closer look. It really did look like a piece of junk from the 90's, made out of cheap semitransparent plastic and even cheaper circuitry. The function, basically unknown. She kept on handling it, trying to understand how exactly one turns it on - or for that matter, where the batteries went in.

Yui had forgotten already who's idea it was to go to Whitewater with a particular Spadamon in tow, but the beachside city was already proving to be an interesting departure from what she was used to all the way up in the Northern Prominence, at Ys. "I mean, it's a really nice place and all, but...The main reason people come here is for the beach. Doesn't Ophi hate the beach?" Fuu was being rather chatty for a change, and trying to question why they came over here, to which Bu retorted...
"Well, she doesn't like water, so...What if we just stayed away from the water and chilled out? Then that'd be perfectly fine, right? I mean, the alternative's trying to freeze the sea and that's...not doable." Their walk had taken them somewhat close to the sea, but so long as they remained at the promenade? There likely wasn't much to worry about.
Speaking of worry...Yui glanced over to Ophelia. "How are you holding up? Do you need more water or anything...? A hat?" To note, Yui was at least dressed for the occasion. Red floral shirt, white shorts...And a sunhat. She was more than willing to offer the hat to the Spadamon if need be.
Fuu, meanwhile, glanced around the promenade and noted a human fiddling with something on a bench. Given this was Fuu, however, she didn't just go up and ask what was up. That was rude. So she just staaaared. The feeling of being watched probably sucked.

Sun, sand, and the typical hubbub and crowds that come with a tourist city... Yep, this was Whitewater. It was an interesting change in environment, Ophelia mused to herself; she and Cassie having never really gone this far south, whenever the two of them would explore the Digital World on their own. The only real exception to this would be the Sunken Elysium, though it wasn't so much them wandering there, and more that they had been there for a mission; so Ophelia figured that it, honestly, didn't really count. This was their first real excursion down south - and this was their first time being in Whitewater.
As a result? This was all new to Ophelia and Cassie; the two sisters peering around with perked ears, alert gazes, and noses sniffing the air - taking in all of the new sights, sounds, and smells. As one might expect of a beach-side city, it was quite warm; and the two arctic-adapted digimon both couldn't help but agree that it was rather hot. A layer of frost over Ophelia's fur kept her cool, though, while she carried Cassie close; the little seal, who was normally in her Gomamon-X form, instead being in her Bukamon form; sipping some water from a small bottle, and wearing her trainer's cap lopsidedly.
"'Slong as I'm far away from the water, I'm cool with this; it's just a lil exhausting keeping myself cool like this in this damn heat," Ophelia remarked, in response to Bu's and Fuu's conversation over her own aversion to water. Maybe if night fell, it'd be a bit cooler out here... Even with her aversion to bodies of water, Ophelia couldn't help but wonder how the ocean would look, while reflecting the night sky...
As Yui proceeded to fuss over the sisters, though, Cassie would be the one to speak up. "Mmm... Maybe more water in a bit? I still got a bit of water left in here, but..." She'd gently shake the bottle; showing to Yui that it was perhaps a quarter full now. "If we can get a hat like yours, though, it might look cute on Ophi!" She'd add in a chirp, giggling happily. "Thank you for bringing us with, by the way!"
Ophelia would blink a bit; briefly thinking over what she might look like with a sunhat, before laughing gently. "I might! Either way, being someplace new is always cool as hell..." She'd add in response; glancing around once more.
In glancing about, though... Ophelia would notice that Fuu was staring off somewhere. She'd tilt her head a bit curiously; calling to the Dorumon "Something caught your attention, Fuu?" as she attempted to follow Fuu's gaze, but... She'd only see a human, sitting on a bench. What was interesting about a human, Ophelia couldn't help but wonder; it just seemed like they were fiddling with something...

The toy didn't like being fiddled with: trying to break it open, the cheap plastic closed back in with enough force to pinch her index finger. "OW!" she yelled, shaking her hand around, "damn finger trap..." she whispered, putting the injured index between her lips. That was when she saw another Digimon staring directly at her. How much time had it been there? Did it see her get hurt? Her skin, dark by nature, turned almost bright red. Aleja felt some form of lump in her throat, as her brain tried to immediately switch from the idea of being completely alone and isolated to actually having to interact with a sentient being. With the usual, mixed result. "... Hola?" was all she could muster. She waved her other hand lightly at the odd violet creature; that was what she was supposed to do, right? "Are you a Digimon, too?"

Yui gave Ophi and Cassie a quiet nod. Yeah, she looked down to her bag to find that she still had plenty of water. "Okay. Just lemme know when." She blinked at the praise the Bukamon gave her, before giggling a bit! "It's nothing, really! I'm happy to have you two along, even if this might not be the most convenient place in the world for you..."
Bu, meanwhile, reached over to pat Ophelia on the mane. "If you get too tired, we can stop for a bit and get more water. Or find some shade, that's always nice to sit in." The Ryudamon nodnodded! "And it's not as cool as you, either." The dragon stated with a confident smirk. Meanwhile, Fuu didn't seem to regard Ophelia's question as the human seemed to hurt herself with the plastic. "Yeah. That." Or, maybe Fuu did hear it. She stepped up to her right as she said Hola...That was hello in a language, right?
"...Saluton? I don't know what I'd be if I weren't a Digimon...What's that you got there? A-Actually, are you okay?"

Cassie smiled brightly to Yui, and would nod. "Spending time with friends is always great! And even if this place is kind of hot..." Her expression and tone would both take on a more teasing hue as she looked up at Ophelia, and cheekily stuck her tongue out; adding "I'm sure Ophi's always happy to spend time with her maaaate~; you become a purring kitty whenever Bu's around~!"
Ophelia would blink a bit owlishly as Cassie giggled; and though Ophelia couldn't help a chuckle of her own, the Spadamon did appear a bit flustered, if the way her fur would puff a little was anything to imply. "Pffft; fuck," Ophelia would laugh, grinning a bit lopsidedly. "This is you getting back at me for teasing you and Valt, huh?"
"Maaaaybeee~"
Before Ophelia could get any further though, Bu's pat on her mane would draw the lioness' attention away; glancing over to her, as she relaxed a bit from the other's touch. The other's concern and dotingness would bring a shy, but appreciative, smile onto her face. "Hanging out in the shade together actually sounds like it'd be pretty nice." She'd admit; adding "Maybe a bit later?" However... Being called 'cool' by Bu, with that confident look, would only make her puff up further; even as she attempted to maintain composure..!
Cassie could only giggle more at Ophelia being easier to fluster than usual; finding it adorable that her usually tough sister was acting this way cause of Bu, and finding a certain amount of karma in being able to tease the Spadamon, after having been teased over her and Valt.
Aleja's yelp of pain would draw the attention of both sisters, though; the two of them both looking in the other girl's direction, Cassie a bit more startled than Ophelia was. The seal would be the first of the two to react, though; her hopping down from Ophelia's arms, and digivolving into her Gomamon-X form once more as she hopped her way over to Fuu and Aleja. "Hello! Are you, uhm.. Are you okay?" Cassie would softly, kindly, ask; her head tilting a bit in visible concern. "It sounded like you were hurt, there..!"
Ophelia wouldn't be far behind, though; tilting her head a bit at the device that Aleja had. It kind of made her think a bit of the device that someone else she met, way back when, used... Sort of... like the device Arthur had..! Was this human similar, then? She certainly didn't see any partners, so... "Why the heck are you trying to pull it apart like that?"

Aleja was definitely not expecting the amount of attention she got in a matter of seconds. The odd creature in front of her seemed to understand her despite looking more like an animal than a human; "Odd," Alejandra thought, "not only can they understand, but they also talk..."
Her interactions with Digimon that didn't look like sentient beings was extremely limited. Ritsuko, whom she had met on the Trailmon, only had a pair of Digimon and those too resembled humans. The animal she could see in front of her, on the other hand, was somewhere between a beast and a dragon. Actually, that thing was strange even by the standards of the animal Digimon she had seen in Whitewater!
As the animal inched closer, Aleja seemed to retract a little further to the left and flattened her back against the bench; she was mildly intimidated by the monster, almost like a small and curious dog looks to a cat person. "S-Saluton?" she said, half repeating after them and half questioning the meaning of the very word.
Very close to the location of the two was approaching a group of people; to Alejandra's ears, theirs was an indistinct chatter. The chatter was immediately masked by the Digimon beside her probing her with the obvious questions; she looked at her finger, and noticed the pinched area was just a little more red than usual. No blood, no black spots. Her index was probably pretty safe, though it did hurt.
She was about to give her response when a new monster joined in. This time it looked more or less like a seal, if seals had claws and fluffy red hair. Her tone was much less scary than the beast dragon, and soothed Aleja just enough to not be completely overwhelmed with attention. "I'm fine, I'm fine." Aleja looked down, as if she was trying to read what to say next on her knees. "I found this thing in my backpack and... I wanted to know how it works." Her eyes lifted up for a second, meeting first the beast dragon, then the seal. "You see, there's some electronics inside and..."
A third voice, much louder than the other two, interrupted her and made her instinctively spasm into an even more shriveled position. The tone and the language... for a person like her, three people talking to her at once was more than enough. What would happen if the third one started screaming at her? Exactly that. She quickly glanced at the source of the third voice; it was another critter, at least as cute as the other two in an objective sense, but absolutely terrifying in a subjective sense. Immediately after, she looked away.
"I-I found this and..." Aleja felt like a criminal caught red-handed. She knew she must have done something wrong with the damn toy - did they think she stole it? Or was it forbidden to rip toys apart around there? Guilt built up as she felt busted. "I found this in my backpack and wanted to know how it works..." she said, trying to keep her eyes as far away from the third creature as possible. "Am I already getting ready for a punishment? Didn't I overreact?" she thought. "Why do I always have to react like this? Everything was going so well."
A clicking sound on the ground caught her attention. She had forgotten the toy on her lap, and the damn thing was tumbling away from her directly towards the seal and the terrible one.

"Well, yeah, she kind of reduces me to a stuttering mess whenever she's around..." Bu admitted, more than a little sheepishly. This was something that had elicited a snicker from Yui. Bu, meanwhile, nodded at Ophi. "Hell yeah! As long as you're here, I'm willing to do everything."
Indeed, there was a lot of attention directed at Alejandra's way as a result of that small goofup she had with the plastic. Fuu immediately made a movement to give Alejandra some space while Ophi and Cassie came over. Yui and Bu on the other hand, opted to maintain their distance. Both go long ways in giving people space, you know? "Ah...I think I get it. It's not bad to be curious about digivices..." The Dorumon stated, quietly. "I think you need a bit more than your bare hands to take one apart, though. And I've never taken it apart before. Heck, I don't know if they even can be taken apart, you know?"
"It's good that you're fine, though. Getting pinched is...painful." The Dorumon concluded, right before the sound of the toy made her jump! How sudden!

Alejandra's growing anxiety was already pretty visible to the two sisters; Cassie could tell by her tone and behavior, and Ophelia could smell the anxiety coming off of her, too. Was she overwhelmed, with all three of them trying to talk to her at once? Cassie would move to back off a little, while Ophelia sat down on the sand; trying to make herself appear a bit smaller, and less threatening, her tail swaying and her eyes blinking slowly and calmly; like a friendly cat might.
"Think I've seen devices like that before," Ophelia commented a bit - tilting her head a bit in visible curiosity - before clarifying "Well, I mean... Lots of humans in the Digital World have that digivice shit n whatnot usually; but I've seen others with that particular model before." Ophelia scratched the back of her head a bit, giving a one-shouldered shrug, before continuing "Sorta like Fuu said, though; I dunno if you should be trying to take it apart with just your hands." Or if it should be taken apart at all, for that matter!
The clicking sound would easily catch Ophelia's attention, though; her ears pricking up, as her eyes snapped towards the toy. She'd glance to it for a second, before going to pick it up; approaching Aleja to offer it back to her. She'd smile a bit lopsidedly, and in an attempt to lighten the mood, would joke "This one's a slippery fucker, huh? Eheh..!" With the chuckle, Ophelia would smile a bit more brightly; asking "What's your name, anyhow? My name's Ophelia,"
Cassie couldn't help a soft giggle at the joke; smiling as well, as she added "And I'm Cassie!"

Alejandra stared with horror as her stolen toy - yes, at that point she was convinced of that - gleefully skipped towards the seal and the other. She sighed, thinking she only effectively had that thing to keep her distracted and if it were lost, or taken back, she would have had to find another way to pass the time. In the meantime, the beast dragon told her a word she was sure she'd heard before, but couldn't quite put her finger on when or where. Her expression seemed to normalize as a result of such "intense brain activity". "Digivice..." she repeated softly, turning to the purple critter, "... you know what this thing is? What does it do?"
The third one chipped in, telling Alejandra something even more interesting: not only was it common for people to have them, but her model had been seen before. She wasn't really sure why, but she could swear the beast had gotten smaller as well; that calmed her down a little bit. It didn't look as threatening, at the very least.
"So you've seen it do something before?" she continued, mainly driven by her interest and by the difficulty she had in switching her attention from one thing to another. She scratched the shaven side of her head lightly, and said "I mean, if I knew what it's used for I wouldn't need to break it open." That was how she learned programming after all. Not by following structured tutorials, but by breaking down pieces of code and removing bits to see what exactly they were supposed to do. That wasn't a piece of code - and this statement is up for debate, in a digital world - but the same principle should have applied.
As she turned to the beast dragon, she nodded in the direction of the only human in her immediate vicinity; "Say, does she have one, too?" she asked, rather quietly as she didn't really want to be on her radar just yet. Almost simultaneously, her eyes caught on a fluff of white hair getting closer. It was the terrible one, the monster with the aspect of a very small lion and the tone of a very big one. She sighed again, noticing it had taken hold of the Digivice. But wait, why did it get closer?
Aleja noted the device in the lion's open palm. Was it handing it back to her? At a more attentive glance, it did look like it was trying to present itself as kindly as possible. Taken slightly aback, Aleja reached for the device and put it back on her lap, where it belonged.
"Thanks and.. yeah..." she took a second to compose the reply; "... a 'slippery fucker' indeed." Her voice cracked a little, testament to how uncomfortable she had felt in the past few seconds; also a testament to her stabilizing state of mind, in a way. "My name is..."
Should she have a nickname, an avatar name, a handle in this world? Was her regular name just enough? She had no idea, so she went with what felt right. Her head bobbed a little as she made her decision. "Alejandra."
She looked at them all for a few second before continuing with the formal greetings. "And... nice to meet you."

What -did- a Digivice do, really? This was a rather loaded question for Alejandra to ask, especially towards a Digimon who was relatively new to having a partner. "It does a lot." She stated simply. "I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything, there's a lot of functions to it that only get different depending on what model it is. That one, I think, allows for Spirit evolving...Which I'm not all too familiar with. It sounds a little spooky, though...."
Yui perked up as she was called out, kind of. "One wha--...Oh, a digivice? Yeah." She pulled out her D-Nexus, which, compared to the average Digivice looked a lot more sleek, and walked over, offering it to Alejandra if she wished to compare the two. "Nice to meet you, Alejandra. My name's Yui. The fox's name is Fuu and the dragon behind me's name is Bu." She gave Alejandra a bow. A courteous one, before she stepped back.
Again. Space.
"...It does seem kind of slippery...then again, a lot of things can get like that very swiftly..." Fuu murmured.

"Well... Of the people we've seen with digivices in that model..." Ophelia would begin, thinking for a second and scratching the back of her head as she thought back. "... Those humans are usually, uh... Called Spirit Users, I think? Usually a human has a digimon partner n shit, but Spirit Users don't tend to have a partner; they usually turn into a digimon, instead."
"Oh yeah," Cassie would murmur thoughtfully, scratching her chin a bit. "Like when Arthur turned into that Guardromon, back at the mountains.." She mused; and with Amy, too, during the Elysium mission. How were they doing, nowadays, Cassie couldn't help but wonder.
With Alejandra's comment regarding breaking it open, though... Cassie tilted her head a bit; adding "Though... Opening it up sounds like it'd risk breaking it, wouldn't it? And... I dunno if there's any way to get a new Digivice, if your current one breaks," There was a bit of concern and uncertainty clear in her face; could Digivices even break, in the first place, she wondered? She'd glance to Bu and Fuu, asking them "Have you ever heard of someone's Digivice breaking?"
Ophelia couldn't help but note that Alejandra was still feeling uncomfortable, as she accepted the Digivice - and so she would take a few steps back, to give the girl her space, once the device was in its rightful place. Still, as Alejandra would introduce herself, Ophelia would grin - chirping "Nice to meet ya, too!" right back; her tail swaying and swishing contentedly.
"Have you been here for long?" Cassie would question curiously, tilting her head a bit. "If you need some friends to help you adjust to the Digital World, me and Ophi are happy to help," She'd offer to Alejandra, smiling kindly. "I'm sure Yui, Bu, and Fuu could help out, too..!"

"Spirit... evolving?" the frowned expression of Alejandra's face was a clear sign that those words meant almost nothing for her. Well, she knew what they meant individually, but not together, and certainly not in the context of Digivices. The purple fox pointed out those things did "a lot" and, piecing together this piece of information with how widespread they supposedly were, Aleja concluded that in any case they must be important. That, or extremely convenient - either way, not a toy. What was left to discover was exactly who it could belong to.
Alejandra saw with newfound horror the other girl approaching right after she mentioned her; it was definitely not her idea to speak to a new person. How many people did she meet in one day? And how many more was she supposed to meet? Her social batteries were running out very quickly.
Anyhow, Yui - that was her name - was especially polite. It really did look like all those people and Digimon were a friendly bunch. She offered her own Digivice to compare; Aleja grabbed it lightly, paying attention not to touch her fingers (not because of some sort of phobia, but pure awkwardness); the two looked entirely different, and the new one was definitely nicer to look at. Maybe, she thought, the one she found was an earlier model.
Ophelia mentioned how using that device, a human could turn into a Digimon and suddenly a question came to Aleja's mind. "Wait, don't tell me that..." she looked around, visibly surprised, "all of you are humans turned Digimon?"
Was it a hasty conclusion? Definitely. However, the only other Digimon she saw before were Ritsuko's Wizardmon and Sorcerymon and those, too looked human. Could they all have been humans in disguise after all?
She immediately backtracked. "No, that was stupid. It can't be." She had realized how she fundamentally ignored all the evidence in favor of the other hypothesis.
One question still remained. Ophelia said "Digimon partners", which somehow implied that humans and Digimon would work together or just even be together. If her own partner had showed up, Aleja thought, it would've been certain that the Digivice was hers all along. However, that Digivice wasn't meant to be used that way. It did make sense for it to be hers, anyways: what kind of Digimon would just "partner up" with the likes of her?
She was brought back to reality by Cassie. "How much time?" she repeated, whipping out her phone. "About an hour." She smiled lightly, thinking her experience with Digiworld was almost identical to a baby of a few days of age. "Well, I don't have many friends. Not here, not in the real world. I'll be happy to know more." She ended with an even brighter smile.
"Actually," she continued, "what does one do in this world to pass the time? Is it just a copy of the real world, where people go to work or school?"

"Y-Yeah, those are usually the kind that Spirit Wielders are seen to use." Fuu added onto what Ophelia was saying. "They use the power of long-dead Digimon, or echoes of those long dead ones to turn into them for a time. I don't really know the history behind them or how they started to crop up in the Digital World, but the fact they can even do that's...fascinating to me."
...It seemed like Fuu was being enabled when it came to going on brief tangents. Both the Ryudamon standing near Yui and Fuu tilted their heads at Aleja's...odd remark. "We're...not? I mean, we have holosuits but we're Digimon through and through. I...I'd think I'd know if I were a human. I think." Fuu murmured.
"...Yeah, it sure sounds stupid when you think about it." Bu snorted. "Bu, that's a little uncalled for." Yui promptly stated with a sharp inflection.
"Fiiine, sorry."
Anyways, the questions posed by Aleja were pretty fair. "Well, I'll be your friend. I'm sure everyone else here would be happy to be your friend too." Yui nodded. "There's...a lot to do here, enough that I'm actually not sure where to start." She admitted. "It's a whole other world, so work and schooling exist, but...it's more tailored to the inhabitants than humans. So, really, you can do just about anything to pass the time."
...Hopefully Ophi or Cassie could save her from this corner Yui may have just talked herself into.

Humans turned digimon...? Ophelia and Cassie blinked for a second at the question; taking a second for them to respond, though by then Alejandra had already backtracked. Ophelia couldn't help a brief chuckle at this; grinning lopsidedly. "Yeahhh, it's like Fuu said; we DO have holosuits that let us disguise ourselves like humans, but we're digimon down to the core. I'd probably be pretty damn surprised if I wasn't a digimon!"
"Ehehe," Cassie giggled briefly at Ophelia's humor, musing - mostly to herself - "I wonder if there are Spirit Users who decide to live their lives as digimon, though, on that note..."
Much like how Yui scolded Bu for her remark, though, Ophelia would give the Ryudamon a gentle bump with her elbow; giving her prospective mate a brief look. They didn't want to scare off this human, when she already seemed to spook pretty easily..!
As Alejandra mentioned having been here for about an hour though, and not having all that many friends... Cassie would smile brightly, and approach; nuzzling Alejandra's leg! "Me and Ophi can be friends, Miss Aleja!" She'd cheerily chirp, to which Ophelia nodded her agreement and flashed a thumbs up and smile in Alejandra's direction.
As Yui tried to explain what there was to do in the world, though; it seemed that she talked herself into a bit of a roadblock. Ophelia would pick up the slack, stretching her arms upwards idly. "Well... Speaking for what me and Cassie tend to do, we like exploring the Digital World. We grew up way up in the mountains, so a lot of the world is still new as hell to us." She'd begin, in her explanation. "Aside from that, though...? I personally love to spar n' playwrestle with others; I love feeling the ache of my muscles and the beat of my core in my ears in the excitement, and keeping my skills sharp!"
Cassie scratched her cheek a bit, adding "I'm not much of a fighter, myself; but Ophi and I do like snuggling up to friends and family, too!"
