The smile of the black Renamon meant something quite deep to her. Even the acceptance of the others did; it was the very first time her "new" name was shouted out in public, and it would have destroyed her if the feedback were a negative one.
She looked at the Magnamon-X turning their hand into a shovel and back into claws; it was surely an odd power to her. But after all, she thought, the rules of common sense didn't apply to the Digital World and anything was possible. Aleja herself was capable of otherworldly feats when transformed, too.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket. She whipped it immediately out and accessed the "messages" application. "Of course I know. But all I'm going to tell you is that it's no ordinary dig site." Aleja was sorely disappointed with how vague the answer was; almost as if he could feel her disappointment, came another message: "Don't be sad. I'm keeping the surprises for later." She pouted once more, and closed the app.
She opened her mouth with the intentions to reveal that small piece of information. That was when she heard what was clearly the growl of a beast inside the inn. Her eyes darted up and around the room, and she clenched the phone tighter towards her chest; "Did you hear that?" she asked, almost whispering. Only after seeing the Renamon hide behind Pal could she connect the dots. Out of pure empathy, her first instinct was to giggle. She covered her mouth with her phone, so as not to seem too rude, and said: "We can all grab something to eat before we go." For once, she didn't have to think about what to do in such a situation; at the back of her mind, she was surprised she could handle it without freezing in place. Maybe she was changing for the better after all.

For a brief moment, as Pal's arm turned into a shovel, Kenny looked a little surprised and interested, as did Skadi. Digivolution was pretty much a Digimon's bread and butter, but non-standard polymorph abilities were kind of rare, admittedly. It was quite a surprise.
While Yomi and the Knightmon were chatting with one another about the dig, Skadi initially bunted her head against the Magnamon-X's hand happily. However, she quickly spotted something a little... off in Pal's eyes. Yet, she said nothing. The last thing she wanted to do was to push one button too many with a possible new friend, especially on such a strong looking one, too.
As for Kenny, he just shrugged to Pal, "To put it bluntly, about a few weeks ago we kinda had to deal with a... how to put it," He scratched his chin briefly, "A sudden outbreak of powerful, but zombie-like Digimon infesting a village. Those nasties could tear you to shreds at the drop of a hat, no matter your level, no matter who you were. Like, sweet Jesus Christ, those things had no chill in them at all."
Skadi was all too aware of what Kenny was going on about, shuddering a little bit, "You're telling me. I'm surprised we actually managed to survive that in the first place." She muttered a little, rubbing her arm and lowering her head, "You wouldn't want to get face-to-face with one, ever." She wasn't kidding, either. She never wanted to think about those dead-eyed Digimon ever again.
Thankfully, Yomi, or rather, her growling stomach, helped to take their mind off their things. As she hid behind Pal, Kenny stifled a little chuckle as he walked over to Yomi, patting the BlackRenamon on the head affectionately, "Don't worry, man. I'm kinda feeling a little peckish myself too. What you feel like? I'm pretty much open for anything." Skadi, as usual, equally nodded in agreement and smiled at Yomi.

Pal tilted her head as the renamon muttered to herself. What was she talking about? It didn’t seem to matter too much as the other went to go sign up for the mission. The knightmon was pretty cheerful and the magnamon-x decided to remain quiet for the moment. If this mission had been around for a while then what problems could there be?
She’d raise a brow as she heard a growl; looking around thinking for a moment someone was mad they took the mission only to find… Well. That it was yomi of all people. She was likely hungry. The magnamon-x blinked slowly and then let out a small chuckle.
”I agree. Food first then mission.”
Well it’s not like she needed to eat, but she had to at least keep that face right? She’d flick her head down when she could tell her arm was moving. It was a weird sensation; or rather the lack of sensation that she was feeling that made this really odd.
Kenny was quick to explain and she’d tilt her head; so there were these zombie like digimon that infested a village…? Sounded something like right out of resident evil! She’d shake her head and scratch at her cheek, absentmindedly rubbing the top of skadi’s head.
”Something to keep an eye out for. Don’t really know if I can get infected with stuff like that though…”
The magnamon-x mumbled to herself and shook her head again; she’d shift and well.. If no one was going to argue she’d go take a seat to start looking over menus. The mission guild always had something in store for members… if you didn’t mind things being kinda basic for ‘lower level’ adventurers! At least they were cheap...
"New people, new mission. Same old food... heh. If i had known this I would of packed a lunch or two..."

"You didn't have to bring that much attention to that. A-and I'm not a man! I think..."
Yomi only barely listened to that report about the zombie invasion, as her mind currently was occupied with something else. Or rather a lack of something else inside her stomach. She hit herself in the gut a little to make it shut up, but not to great success. Everyone's eyes were now on her, too! How horrible.
As embarrassing as it was, the thought of getting some food was enticing. Everyone seemed to be up for it, even the metal lady! With that in mind, and having plucked the advertisement from the board, the group moved to where the Knightmon stood, as the guild also doubled as a tavern! The big fellow put the glass away, one could almost guess he was grinning under that helmet of his.
"Figured to go for a meal before riding out towards your first adventure huh? Good call, good call! No heroics are being done on an empty stomach! What can I getcha?"
"Um... a sandwich would be nice..." - Yomi muttered, as she reached to take out the little baggie she used for a wallet, and sank her hand into it. She felt it for a few moments inside, only to pull out one measly bit. This was even more embarrassing than when her stomach made a call... One thing being hungry... The other one being ... well, broke! She looked at the knightmon, sheepishly, tapping her finger against the counter.
"I uh... don't suppose I could pay up with washing dishes for half a day in exchange for that sandwich? Or uh... put in on my tab?"
Her tail was lowered, and was still and stiff as a board. It was such an awkward feeling, to ask for favors... And yet she had to do it far too often to her liking. Even the spirit groaned something about her being pathetic, from the inside.

The four decided to follow through with the idea of having lunch before embarking on the quest. While others chatted about something regarding zombies, Aleja checked her phone. No new messages: apparently the ever-talking Iktomimon finally shut up.
She followed Yomi to the Knightmon; she wasn't sure what the Knightmon had to do with food. When the black Renamon started talking about sandwiches, however, she immediately deduced that the Digimon could have been, in fact, the innkeep in charge of orders.
If she had animal ears like the Renamon, they would have been drooping after hearing what Yomi told the Knightmon. What was that, then? Did she feel sorry for a total stranger? She was never a sociopath, and in fact she always felt pretty empathetic, but that struck her as new. Ever since she had moved to Digi-World, the rules governing her life and behaviour had been turned on their heads. Especially after she realised what her truest desire was.
"I... I'll pay for it." It was a quick decision, made in a moment of confusion. When she heard those words from her own mouth, she didn't believe them: did Aleja, the girl who would only stay quiet and watch people suffer, really help a complete stranger? Why? Was she really changing, then? The mere thought made her violently blush. "I'll pay for it. And... and make it two sandwiches." Her indecision over food still remained, it seemed. She turned to Yomi, red-faced, and said: "I'll handle this, you just... go look for somewhere to sit down."

Kenny could only smile and chuckle once more as he once again petted Yomi on the head affectionately, "Aw come on, Yomi, I was just teasing you." Human or Digimon, he was starting to develop the knack for playful teasing with close acquaintances. Perhaps it mutated from Skadi's own affectionate teasing that he was used to by now, who knew?
As for Skadi? Well, as the Magnamon-X mused to herself as she would feel Skadi happily bunt her nose against her hand once more, she was quick to (try and) reassure her, "Don't worry about it, Pal. We got it under control." Honestly, that pat was more than enough to calm her down after her memories of trying to deal with the Bleached threatened to rear it's ugly head.
Regardless, they, like the rest of the group, would follow Yomi to the Knightmon, as the Renamon tried to order something, only to realise that she had gone broke. Kenny sighed a little, out of concern as he looked down, and Skadi twiddled her fingers a bit. How could they help this poor lady? It was just then Kenny was about to say something...
Only for Aleja to jump in and offer to pay for the sandwiches herself, much to the two's pleasant surprise. And all of a sudden, an idea struck Kenny's thoughts. Without even hesitating, he put a hand on Aleja's shoulder and smiled, "Hey, how about you and I go dutch on this?" He told her, Skadi nodding keenly at the idea, "I can help pay for the meal too, got a fair bit of money from our previous missions, sound good to you, Aleja?"
Hey, nothing stopping him from chipping in, too!

Such nice people...
A favor they will seek to collect.
She scoffed at her spirit's paranoid thoughts. Honestly, Yomi did not expect such generosity not from one but both of her new companions. Then again, it was probably nothing for them. They seemed... well-adapted to the environment. Come to think of it, it was muchly on other humans' (and some digimon) kindness that allowed her to survive for this long. Yomi walked through the Dark Area, and left it alive, which was more than one could save for most. For someone without anything special about herself... the girl was sure lucky. That thought made her smile a little.
"Thank you..."
The heartwarming exchange was suddenly interrupted by a booming laughter from the Knightmon, who loomed over the counter and gave them a thumbs up.
"Ah-hah-hah! Good to see an old-fashioned camaraderie spirit! It's a rare enough thing these days! Everyone's crazy about bits and whatnot. Well not me, not Knightmon! Since you guys are all fresh arrivals, think I can afford you a meal, on the house!"
The digimon then turned around and started clanking kitchenware around, opening and closing the fridge, slicing and dicing bread, vegetables, liverwurst, and other stuff. Soon enough, offering them a nice big plate with sandwiches and four mugs of what looked and smelled like... Ale? With it, Yomi and the rest would soon occupy the nearest table, with the fox looking at Alejandra, Kenny, and the rest. Her eyes briefly met with each of their eyes, before looking away, a bit flustered.
"Thanks... I... honestly, did not expect you to be so nice to me... I'll try to make it up to you somehow, promise." - the fox said, before taking her mug, suspiciously looking into it. Sniffing at it.
"Is it even legal for most of us to drink that..."

Aleja opened her mouth ready to answer Kenny, just when the Knightmon decided to put everyone's meal on the house. "He must've seen how... Knightly, we've been?" she thought, looking over towards the Digimon. That was one odd exchange, for sure.
"Thanks for the offer, anyways..." she said to Kenny, a little sad she didn't get to reply in time. Knowing the little bit of pride she had, and knowing how hard (despite being sudden) the decision was, Aleja was probably going to refuse splitting the money. She managed to be kind for once - she better keep her word through and through. She still couldn't muster up the courage to tell them she would have refused; this made her actually think whether or not she would've been brave enough to refuse right then and there for real.
But it didn't matter, she thought; the sandwitches were ready, and food was already all over her mind. Aleja took a minute bite out of her sandwich, and replied to Yomi: "I just want to help. You didn't sound thrilled over washing dishes." With a half smile, she bit into her sandwich again, this time taking a little more. "I mean..." she continued, "... I don't do missions for the money. If I can make sure people are safe, that's what matters."
For some reason, her words felt... out of place. Not because of the situation, but because of who said them: why would such a shy and borderline insecure person protect others? It almost didn't feel like it was her genuine thought.
For the remainder of the meal, Aleja didn't even look towards the cup of ale. When everybody had finished eating, she'd check her phone. A new message. "Good girl. Here, I sent you the coordinates to the dig site." "Don't say 'good girl'. It's slimy." "You still did good. Helping people is what we want. And I'll have you know, many find me rather charm-" Aleja closed the phone before finishing the sentence. "So," she said, of a sudden, "shall we go? Do you guys know where this place is?"

Yomi dug into the sandwich.
Her pupils briefly turned into hearts as she consumed food. Was it always this good? Or was she just that hungry? Her ears twitched eagerly above her head, as she ate. They were also pretty good at listening, as she did not miss a single word. Briefly looking up from her sandwich, crumbs on her chin.
"Mnn... I'm okay with washing dishes... It's that the Witchmon that sheltered me for the first week or so also worked me to the bone washing dishes. She couldn't do it herself, you see. Big claws and all." - Yomi explained, making her own 3-fingered paws look particularly grabby, to illustrate the point better, before returning to her meal.
The renamon briefly looked at Alejandra and smiled, hearing her motivation to go on this. She seemed like a good person, offering to pay for her and not being motivated by cash. A real hero! The spirit disagreed, muttering something about everyone always wanting 'something' in return, but Yomi listened not to it.
"Doesn't mean heard work shouldn't be rewarded, right? The leaflet said it was 7 miles away from the village, to the North-West. Shouldn't take too long. Uhm... normally I'd be exhausted after such a walk, but this body can run for days..." - she looked at herself once more, as if she wore it as a suit or something. The rest were finishing their own sandwiches, so...
Once everyone was ready, the party would thank the kindly Knightmon for his generosity, and leave the guild, heading towards the digsite!

Aleja took small bites off her sandwich, chipping away at it as if her mouth couldn't take more than a fraction of the meal at a time. It was pretty good, she thought, but not nearly enough to justify the voracity with which Yomi herself was devouring hers.
With the way she ate, Aleja couldn't help but feel slightly uneasy. Did the mere fact that one is a Digimon cause Yomi to act like that? Did her "animal" instincts take over, as if being a beast-type digimon also meant that she was turning into a beast?
And most of all... Could it happen to herself, too?
She nodded, listening intently at the story being told. She had no idea what a Witchmon looked like, but for some reason the name didn't exactly match up with the word "claws". Indeed, Aleja was rather confused, but preferred not to ask - so that she wouldn't look ignorant. She made a mental note to ask Iktomimon about it later, though.
After the others had replied about their knowledge of the position of the site, she showed her phone. On it was a detailed GPS location of the digsite, with the precision of a few tens of meters. "If we're all ready..." she said on a whim, with the trace of a shy smile on her face, "... I know where to go."

Pal rubbed at her neck and looked between the two, she hadn’t ordered anything to eat. If anything she wasn’t hungry, it was a constant state of being for her and really she didn’t need it. But she deigned to listen in on these two. So yomi had washed dishes for a week and was worked raw by a witchmon before leaving out on her own.
Pal didn’t know where this place was or what to really add on, she looked concerned for a moment before shaking her head. If the others knew where it was or where to go then that was that. If they were ready and didn’t need to eat anymore well…
”Then lets go. If it’s about seven miles away and we know where to go then times a wasting! Besides a walk that long is great with company!”
Cheerful sounding even if the magnamon-x didn’t need to sleep. Didn’t need to worry about her own stamina. Did she even have a cap to that? Did she even know how long she could go for? Ever since taking this body she didn’t need any of it and it was aggravating. She’d shift herself and the clomp of her metal feet against wood was the only thing that they’d hear for a moment.
She was ready and raring to go, even if it was just digging pal was at least glad to be doing something. She had thoughts she wanted to go through, ideas in her mind that she didn’t know if she could share. Maybe she could dig better with her tail or maybe she could turn into a really big shovel? The idea of a magnamon-x styled shovel made her snort…
But then she could turn into whatever she felt like right? Even look human… even if her body had that metalic sheen. Eesh.
She’d grit her ‘teeth’ and shift her weight again before getting to the door. Glancing back at the others; her tail shifting and her pauldrons clicking at the movement.
”Can’t really think of the last time I went out and dug for someone though. This’ll be weird...

Having grown up in an environment where he often found himself on the receiving end of bullying for being a 'freak' thanks to his own autism, he had a sort of resolve lurking inside of him, to be a better person and to stand up for the little guys, even in his own small ways. "Not a problem." He warmly smiled at Yomi, "It's only fair that we chip in to help a good friend in need."
Much to his and Skadi's surprise, however, it quickly turned out that it would be Knightmon himself that would be footing the bill for them. Looking up at the giant iron man, Kenny gave a simple, thankful nod, "Oh, um, thanks man. We appreciate it." before setting off to his table with the rest of the group. He appreciated Aleja's words, to be honest. It just didn't feel right to have somebody throw the entire burden upon themselves. It was only right to put his foot in the door and chip in.
The sandwiches were nice, all things considered, although even if he was technically of age to drink, he wasn't exactly one to drink himself, and neither was Skadi. Again, he smiled at Yomi as he ate, "No, don't worry, Yomi. We just wanted to help you out back there, and save you the trouble. That's what friends are for, right?" He lightly chuckled to himself. Such a sweet girl.
Other than that, the two mainly sat out of the conversation between Yomi and Aleja. For a moment, as Kenny watched the Black Renamon wolf down her sandwiches, he blinked a little in surprise, and Skadi barely could hold in a giggle at the sight. With food this good, who could blame her. Skadi's glance, however, once again would fall upon the Magnamon-X. Why wasn't she eating, exactly? Did she eat earlier? An odd pang of concern started to form inside her gut; but she knew not to ask.
Regardless, once they had finished off, it was time to set off, with the two giving a wave to the Knightmon in thanks, and following the rest of the group to the digsite in question. Once outside, Kenny would hold out his D-Nexus, coating Skadi in a white glow as she evolved into her Canandemon form. On cue as she leaned down for Kenny to climb on, she would cry, "Anybody else need a ride?"
Had they either accepted or rejected, they would be on their way. The Magnamon-X's comments made Skadi giggle a little, nudging the Magnamon-X with her head as gently as possible (well, as gentle as a giant monster ram could be), "Aw, come on Pal. It'll be fun! We might discover something really cool there! Maybe like... a SkullGreymon fossil perhaps?" She exclaimed in her little train of thought.
A snort quickly escaped Kenny, "Heh. Hopefully if that happens it won't spontaneously spring to life and try to kill us all for shits and giggles. Hopefully."
...that was dark Australian humour for you.

Seven miles was a pretty long walk, as it turned out. Enough time for everyone to get to know one another a little bit more. Yomi relayed her own story about how she ended up here in the first place, and described in full detail just how many things the Witchmon made her do around the tavern. It was before she lost her human form though. And although the Renamon still had fairly dexterous digits, compared to most digimon, she still missed the capacity of holding a pen right. But she was a small person, with small worries, thrown into big trouble. She listened to others too, and stayed close to Aleja. Somehow, that girl seemed ... safest to be around of. Or maybe Yomi just felt a touch intimidated by everyone else. Pal for being a metal robot, and Kenny for... well, being a guy. It was weird and hard to explain. Rationally, at least.
Eventually, they made it to the digsite. Located just outside of the forest and between two sandy-looking hills, it looked about just how one would expect it to look. A few layers of earth were removed, and inside the artificial cavern there were numerous sectors of digging. The camp was closer to the entrance, tents flanking the passage deeper into the worksite left and right. In front of them, there were fireplaces, with logs to sit on, and various cooking implementals scattered about. The coals were still warm. All-n-all, a fairly generic digsite.
Except for one tiny detail.
There were no ... people around. Neither in tents, nor at the fireplaces, nor at the working sights ahead. Nothing. As if the camp had been abandoned, all of a sudden. Yomi would walk, her ears twitching, trying to catch any sounds about. But besides the howling wind... there was nothing.
"Hello? Anybody home?"
She called. But only silence was the answer. Yomi tucked her head into her shoulders, before turning around to the person who said they knew where to go.
"Uhh... you sure we're at the right place? This one looks pretty abandoned."

Even with the offer for them to climb onto the evolution of skadi pal would well… She’d gesture to her back where her small jet burners were. If she wanted to she could coast along at a lazy speed. And if needed she could always carry someone if she wanted to.
”I don’t even know if Digimon leave bones… Do they?”
...Well even with seven miles being their trek, pal unsurprisingly wasn’t tired in the least bit. Her metal body didn’t tire very easily if at all and even if she did tire she wouldn’t rest the same way others would. Pal didn’t seem to mind that she wasn’t stuck near, if anything she seemed a little distant if not thoughtful.
The magnamon-x’s sole eye slid across the scene they were greeted to and without a word she’d stop. Turning her head this way and that; she’d growl a bit and slowly stalk forward. The unmistakable ‘shing’ of her claws sliding from their metallic holsters.
”Abandoned for a reason. Everyone be on guard. Spread out and see if anyone or anything is still here. Call if you find something.”
Why couldn’t anything ever be easy?
Well this was easy up until they located this place. If the camp had been abandoned it was for a good reason. For people to run well… That meant a pretty size-able danger to everyone that had been present. Pal didn’t like telling people she barely knew what to do but in this situation she didn’t really find there to be much of an option other than someone to say what to do.
She wasn’t exactly a leader and her tenseness probably also didn’t help whatsoever. Even if the others didn’t listen she’d be on her guard; the low hum of her core spooling up as her body was getting ready for combat.
”I don’t like this.”

The walk to the digsite wasn't exactly anything to write home about. If anything, Skadi's massive stamina complimented her form as she and Kenny followed the rest of the group. All that training did allow her to retain this form outside of battle without losing a sweat, making her the perfect steed for long journeys ahead, thick and thin. Still, Skadi kept on guard, keeping one eye out for any hostiles that would come their way, if any.
Thankfully, the non-eventful nature of the walk ensured that they would reach the digsite safe and sound. But upon arrival, it quickly hit the both of them that something was a little... off about this place. Best case scenario, Yomi and Pal were right, it was abandoned. Even fairly recently, if the warm coals and the tents told them anything. Worst case scenario, however?
...yeah.
The two gave a nod over to Pal on her orders, and set off towards the tents. The Canandemon stood on guard, still keeping one eye out for attackers as she approached. All the while, Kenny scratched his arm nervously, "Just... what the hell happened here? It looks like it was abandoned pretty recently; nature hasn't reclaimed the digsite yet, and we all know that nature tends to reclaim shit pretty quickly, even in the Digital World."
"Yeah, it looks like it." Skadi added, as they reached the set of tents, lowering herself down for Kenny to safely climb off (which he did), "I think something must have driven the researchers off."
"Must be. Anyways, Skadi, I'm gonna check the tents. Keep a lookout for me in case something starts to attack us, OK?" The Canandemon gave another nod to him, before scanning the area for any attackers once more. Meanwhile, Kenny would approach the first tent, pulling out a small flashlight from his own Infini-Store and switching it on, carefully investigating what he could find.
Just what was inside of here?
