If this MPC isn't "Driver's Ed" enough, I'll just accept the credit for Super Digi-Kart.
This world is insane. I figured that out fairly quickly, and it hasn't exactly been long since I hopped on a living train and ended up here as a cat in a cloud. Even so, this really cements it.
It's an unfortunate fact that in this cyber landscape, yen does nothing for the aspiring tourist. Everything here runs on bits. Inns, restaurants, hired protection. You name it, they want bits for it. Now most of this doesn't really concern me, the Digital World doesn't have a lot of entertainment I feel like consuming. There are, however, several convenient items that I'd like to own. A "Digi-Port", for, apparently, teleporting to and fro the Digital World at the push of a button, a "Shadow Boxing Program", which would let me test my Digimon form's attacks out without actually being in danger, a "Light Screen", seems required with how infrequent this digivice works. There are even some things I'd want outside of the Digital World, like an "Infini-Store". If the store owner is truly believable, I could place my entire closet of goods inside one and carry it around with me.
Unfortunately, bits don't come by allowance. You either have to work for them, or presumably mug people for theirs. I'm not keen on the latter, and I don't have time for the former now. I was, however, told of a way to make a lot of bits in a short amount of time. For whatever reason, the Digital World loves racing.
In go-karts.
From the metropolis of Terminus to the great wildlands, they reconstruct entire swaths of land so they're suitable for these elaborate races. I'm not sure what gave birth to this hobby, maybe a digimon got infected with racing games and it somehow spread. What matters is that often they'll hold Grand Prixs, where you can win a hefty chunk of prize money for coming in the top three. There aren't any Grand Prixs that would accept a novice at the sport, but there's a local tournament being held in the Network Plains, not terribly far from Terminus. It doesn't have as much of a reward as the big leagues, but it'll satisfy me for now if I make any amount.
While most races allow both humans and digimon, this one in specific only allows digimon racers. That's not the concern. I can turn into a digimon, after all, but I don't have a kart of my own. While investigating into the race, I found a racing team whose driver was unable to make the race on account of being injured. Long story short, I convinced them I was a capable driver, and that I'd drive for them. V-mon and I have similar sizes, thus their kart is a near-perfect fit for me. If I miraculously won, we'd split the prize money. There's... one problem, though.
I don't know how to drive. Sure, I tested the vehicle, made sure my paws reached the pedal and that my clouds fits inside the confines of the seat. Gave it a little test run, slow and steady, to make sure the kart wouldn't fall apart on me. That was it however, and I'm barely aware of the rules of this thing. There are apparently weapons scattered along the race track that you're to pick up and use against the other competitors. How exactly do I grab them while driving? I doubt my paws could even grab them.
No time to think about that. I'm already here, in this aesthetic-clashing, blue vehicle of death. Complete with a V emblem on the front, and red flames painted along the side. It makes the vehicle faster, of course. Instead of worrying about the race itself, or even how to drive this thing, I'm more concerned about the racers in front of and behind me. How do these freaks manage to acquire vehicles large enough for them? On top of that, how did they make a race track wide enough to accommodate for them?
Oh, and how is this fair?!
Starting from the first place in the top left, we have Navimon, a strange digimon with wheels for legs and map pins straight from G**gle Maps for arms. You might wonder how they hold a steering wheel- don't worry it concerned me too. Turns out they're racing without a kart, which is apparently an option. Whether that's an advantage, or disadvantage, I've no idea. Behind and to the right of them, is Dorulumon, a large, horned wolf of some kind. I thought they'd have a worse time using their kart than I, but it seems they're managing. Worse yet and in third, is Nefertimon. Some flying, metal sphinx? Thankfully, still confined to a kart. In fourth, ancient Garurumon. An, as implied, ancient warrior, decked out in some... kind of wolf mech, armor maybe? Or so it looks. Where'd they come from? Who the hell knows! We're not even close to absurd yet. In fifth, and in front of me, is Salamon. Just a dog with what looks a rather large collar. Nothing weird here.
Starting the second line, behind me and to the far left - not that you need to look to know they're there, given the shadow they're casting over the land - is Dragomon. You know, Dragomon, the Digimon ripped straight from L***cr**'s works, the one that towers higher than anything in miles, including the buildings. That's not even mentioning their own vehicle, which is of the size you'd imagine. Will I be crushed? Will I be killed underneath those wheels? I already had my stint of internal and external dread, and I think the racers coming after them shook me out of it. Barely visible behind Dragomon is the mythical Omnimon. Why? How?! Isn't that cheating?! I haven't been around that long, but that's two digimon in one isn't it?! At least their bike's of reasonable size, comparably, but how do I race with these freaks? I thought this was a small, local race! It's apparently fine, because in addition to divine knights and dark gods, we have another god-incarnate, Mervamon, who's starting in ninth. Their snake arm is looking particularly angry about today's turnout.
Following them is Guilmon. Small fire lizard on a hoverboard. Hoverboards were an option? Could I have just drove my cloud?
What, you thought there'd be something crazier than Omnimon? Have no fear! Remember when I said Dragomon was the largest? Well, they have a contender! Gundramon is lumbering second to last in the back, with more weapons strapped to them AND their kart than most countries have in storage, I'm sure. The only solace I have is that the organizers told me our karts will project defensive shields and remove us from the race before we're killed by anything. Finally, and somehow reasonable after seeing everyone else, Dark Tyranomon is waiting in the far back right. I've no idea what anyone is doing here, but is it too late to back out? My life is flashing before my eyes, and I'm reminded of the mistakes I've made up until being trapped in this deathmatch.
The race starts, after what feels hours of wandering lost in my mind, and immediately I'm overtaken by every racer. There's some technique to getting an early boost? It takes Dragomon's overwhelming force of wind drifting off their vehicle for me to start driving. Surprisingly, Gundramon and Guilmon are behind me in moments, and Dark Tyranomon's sped ahead to the front. The starting positions of the other racers maintain, but that quickly changes as racers drive through unstable chunks of data in the middle of the track. I avoid the first set, learning after through exposure that those apparently are the "weapons". When you hit them, they transform into random cards for you to scan on your kart as if it were a D-MR. What does Navimon do then? Appears he just ignores them... Regardless, that means I don't have to reach out and grab them, the cards just materialize in my possession for later used. You can only hold one at a time, so it's preferable to use them before reaching another.
Far ahead of me, I see a flurry of fire, hail, and explosives being launched all around. I'm focusing on driving, when Omnimon and their kart barrel through the air and slam into the front of my kart! It's more frightening and shocking than it actually is dangerous, they simply pop up in the air and fly somewhere behind me. Thank whatever engineer designed these machines. While they do, we spend a fraction of a second they're upside down and above me making awkward eye contact. Out of what's probably fear, I accidentally spit a mist of water in their face. I do lose a bit of control in the chaos, but no one in the back manages to overtake me.
The track's been straight for the most part, but I can see a harsh turn coming up... Drive through a data chunk, and the card that materializes is for a digimon known as Ryudamon. I'm trying to read what it does, but it's hard to read and drive at the same time!
Whatever, just activate it, it'll do something! ...How do you activate it? It's like, Card... Card Slash? Card Slash! I swipe the card across the kart's dashboard, hoping it does something. The card fizzes out of existence, and a sword materializes out of the front of my kart, then shoots forward like a bullet into Mervamon's, just as they're taking the corner. It lodges in their wheels, and sends them off to the side of the course. Yes! I cheer to myself, and am so distracted by my slight victory that I forget to take the corner myself until the last second. The kart turns way too sharply, and I spin out as well.
It takes several seconds of fumbling my paws on the pedals to pull into reverse and get back to racing, sooner than Mervamon, but the others, including Omnimon, have already pulled far ahead. Not that it takes long to catch up once I get used to how this thing steers. I've driven a car in the real world a few times, never managed to get a license but I can tell this thing handles both better and far worse than anything humans have made. It wasn't built for my particular shape, which is a problem. V-mon is of similar height, but I'm not naturally bipedal, so one of my paws has to stretch down to hit the gas, and the other has to try to steer. Because of how short I am like this, I can only half see the road. It also turns far too sensitively, but at the same time it's ridiculously easy to make adjustments.
After only twenty seconds or so I make it back to my starting position in fifth, or wait, I started in sixth right? Hey, I pulled ahead of someone! Navimon and Dark Tyranomon are leading the pack, somehow. The gargantuan monsters are too busy flinging weapons of mass destruction at each other, and being the size of a large home isn't doing Dragomon or Gundramon any favors in the speed department either. Looking at the small minimap displayed on my kart, I can see Guilmon's stopped moving entirely, they're completely still and off the track. Something must have hit them like it did Omnimon, only Guilmon didn't take it as well. Salamon is really close, and in fact is driving closer... there's some, thing? wrapped around their kart. Is that a tuba?
Stupid question. They ram into my kart, and at the same time their tuba makes an extremely obnoxious sound, disorienting me and sending me to the side again. thankfully I grabbed a card myself, and things were calm enough for me to actually read it! Card Slash! Blue tentacles stretch out from under the kart and latch on Salamon's tuba.
"CORRUPTION CABLE!"
The wires shock Salamon, though the flashing force field implies they're not taking physical damage. It does let me swap places with them as the wires drag their kart past me, however.
Before I realize it, only two minutes in, and we're already on the third lap! It's been so hectic I had no chance to notice the scenery. We've gone through tunnels dug into the expansive hills, and off several jumps at the top of said hills. In the distance, I can see Trailmon Terminal, and the walls of Terminus a bit further. Somewhere in the second lap I found where Guilmon's race met its end, along with a crater taking up half the track. Where'd an attack like that come from?! I haven't seen a card with nearly that kind of effect!
Still, I hate to admit it... this extreme speed, the exhilarating, competitive and unfair nature packed into every card; I'm actually having something that feels like fun! That, or maybe I've gone into a state of delusion from fear of death. There isn't a chance in any dream of me catching up; driving this thing straight is a challenge in and of itself, let alone drifting these corners to get a boost in speed as Dark Tyranomon has been.
All I'm getting from these cards are weapons and shields, nothing to help catch me up! This last card is quite literally my last chance. Come on, come on... Mirage Strikes? Not sure what that means, but Card Slash! I swipe the card, and as I do I see a trail coming from my hand. I try to shake it off, but it seems this is the card's effect? My kart is producing an afterimage, but it's not easy to tell if it's having any significant effect behind me!
"GIGA ICE-BLAST!"
What? What's Giga Ice-Blast?! Someone's kart behind me just screeched out those words, what does that do?! There's a noise like a generator whirring to life for about five seconds, and I start to drive to the left. A chunk of ice easily the size of ten of my kart put together crashes into the open track where I just was, leaving a frozen crater in its wake and several splinters as it bounces ahead. The impact alone bumps my kart into the air, with several icicles stabbing through the metal of my kart with minimal resistance. So much for the shields! The dashboard's screen starts flashing a warning of red, and I'm separated from my kart, which itself has already split into two, and my cloud, preventing me from trying to regain control by flying. The last thing I see as I'm viewing the track upside down is Omnimon, nonchalantly breezing by. They slowly turn to look at me, and for a fraction of a second that we make eye contact - though I can't see their face - I can tell that they're grinning at me under their helmet.
