Room For Improvement [Carlos]

To a lot of everyday visitors, the Spartan Training Grounds were mainly a place to train up, and learn a new thing or two about combat. To Kenny and Skadi, however, the training grounds held a lot of sentimental significance. You see, almost a year ago, as Skadi was just homing her skills here, along came Ryouta and Valt, who Skadi, ever so plucky, challenged the muscular Veemon to a one-on-one match, with the winner getting to toss the loser into the lake.
And while it came as a surprise to literally nobody that Valt was easily able to overpower the plucky combatant, and (literally) give her and her tamer an early bath, she actually managed to impress him with some clever tactics, and eventually agreed to make her his disciple, and just a week later, they had found themselves in KIZNA's ranks. And their future would be looking bigger and brighter than ever before.
Of course, even after all this time and all their achievements, they knew there was always room for improvement, especially after recent events. While training with Valt was all fine and dandy, he couldn't be there all the time (plus, Kenny did prefer his clothes intact, thank you very much). Hence, why they were there today; to help give Skadi a little more 'oomph'.
As they entered the grounds, a wave of nostalgia came awash over Skadi, as she looked up to her tamer with a warm smile, "Y'know Kenny, I've just realised it's almost been a year since we met Ryouta and Valt, right here at the training grounds. Feels like it was almost yesterday."
"You're telling me, man." Kenny chuckled, placing his hands behind his head as he relaxed himself, "Who'd think that Ryouta and Valt would pick out a couple of out-of-nowhere nobodies like us? And actually make us their disciples? Not that I'm complaining, of course. I mean look at us." He gestured to himself, "We managed to do a lot of crazy and exciting things in the span of a single year."
"And made our senpais proud too, don't forget!" Skadi winked to him with a smile and a knowing pointer finger.
"Fair point." Kenny nodded a little, "Honestly, I think going forward, I'm gonna be a little more optimistic. I've been prescribed antidepressants recently, so hopefully I won't be letting stress or paranoia cloud my judgement. Valt's right. I need to have a lot more faith in the both of us."
"That's the spirit, Kenny!" The Valaismon cheered, pumping a fist into the air, "And I'll make sure we work hard to achieve all of our goals! Together, as partners!"
Kenny could feel butterflies form in his stomach as he leaned down to his partner's level, and glanced at her with a grin, "Attagirl, Skadi." He cried as he ruffled his giggling partner's hair, "Just... next time we meet Valt, promise me you won't go overboard with your bets, OK?"
Skadi still giggled a little mischievously as she looked up at Kenny, and all he could give was a content sigh and a shake of his head. His partner may be an embarrassing little dag, but he was glad he had her in his life. But thoughts about silly bets had to stay in the backburner. Just what should they do first, honestly?

The training grounds were quickly becoming something of a third home for the trio that was Carlos and the twins Dio and Gio, a place they could always return to unwind, forget about any past dramas and pains and strenght themselves up for when they would inevitably fight again. Perhaps their own take on a training "routine" was not nearly as harsh or efficient as what Valt usually had them do, but at the very least it was a lot less painful and hard on their bodies than the Veemon's...less than subtle approach.
That said their routine wasn't exactly all that conventional, to put it mildly. While Carlos seemed content for now with just doing a repeat of what Ryouta usually got him to do (namely a load of push ups, sit ups and squats for starters) the twins were taking a page from the training they had put the Spadamon Kitt through a couple weeks ago, a sparring session with a twist: get knocked down three times, and you're out.
It had been a relatively close match so far, at least until Dio made the mistake of getting close to his brother for a finishing blow. His flaming fist collided against the Guilmon's face with considerable strenght...yet the black scaled lizard stood there, unfazed, his slit pupils gazing down at the Impmon with a mixture of confusion, amusement and a slightly elated feeling of anticipation. The last thing the imp saw was the Guilmon flashing him a triumnphant grin, before he felt his brother's open palm mercilessly clashing against the side of his face and sending him face first into the ground with a loud thud.
There was a moment of silence as the defeated imp laid face down on the floor, unmoving for long enough for Carlos to take notice and stopping his push ups, looking back at the duo with a hint of concern in his tone.
"Should I call it off or...?"
"...n-nah, I concede." The imp quietly replied, waving around his hand without really getting up from the ground.
"YAY!" The black guilmon immediatelly almost erupted with glee, quickly grabbing a hold of the fallen impmon, dusting him off a bit before giving him a tight hug. "Did I do good, bro?"
Dio let out a sigh, before giving Gio a gentle pat on the head, a small but content smile on his face. "Yep, you did well enough, dummy."
Carlos could only shake his head and smile at this odd yet oddly wholesome scene. These two could go from seriously competitive to loving and caring in the blink of an eye. If that wasn't the most brotherly thing to do, Carlos didn't know what it was. He walked up to the two while stretching his arms, before letting himself fall next to them, sitting on his rump close to the twins and giving both of them an affectionate pat in the head, much to Gio's visible delight and Dio's...delight mixed with embarrasment.
"I think we should take a little breather, sound good for you two?"

Nearby, Kenny and Skadi quickly turned their head in interest to a spar, one being done by an oddly familiar Impmon and an equally oddly familiar BlackGuilmon, accompanied by what looked to be their tamer. Skadi was first to speak, tilting her head a little as she watched, "Hey, Kenny, these two over there look a little familiar." She pointed at them.
"You're telling me." Kenny chuckled, "Weren't these two the ones we saw back in Golden Week just like... hanging around and such?"
"Seems like it." Skadi added, her glance drifting towards the Guilmon walling the Impmon's punch with relative ease, "Have to admit, that Guilmon does look pretty tough, if you ask me." This was quickly followed by a wince as the Guimon easily managed to quickly wallop the Impmon with just a single slash of his claw, like if he was nothing.
Needless to say, Kenny was wincing too, and only when recovered, he replied, "...maybe a little too tough for his own good. Remind me not to piss him off, like ever." Even when the Guilmon's personality spontaneously turned into a happy-go-lucky kid the moment the Impmon surrendered, he still kept his stance. This was still a bunch of superpowered aliens he was dealing with here.
But honestly, the childlike nature the Guilmon had on him did make Kenny giggle a little. If anything, it reminded him of Skadi, but her fluffy, friendly-looking exterior replaced by a more menacing reptilian one. Both were tough in their own way, and it showed immensely in both forms. He looked like a good kid, even if the Impmon jokingly referred to him as a little dim at times. It was something that the both of them had to take with a grain of salt, considering what they knew of him so far.
As their white-haired tamer sat near his two Digimon, giving them a little affection, Kenny would approach them in turn, Skadi happily following in tow, "Hey, uh, we just watched you's two battle out there." Kenny started, glancing at the two viral Digimon resting near the white haired tamer, "You guys were pretty good, I have to admit..."
Skadi still looked a little quizzical, however, "Sorry to interrupt, but weren't you the same Digimon we saw back in the whole Golden Week incident?" It was something she couldn't quite put her finger on. They did look a little familiar, even if they seemed to be just standing there and twiddling their thumbs after everything was said and done. Granted, this could just be chalked up to semantics rearing it's ugly head, as they only spotted them after everything was said and done.

Just as the trio began to relax, they would notice a brown haired man approaching them, as well as a (quite adorable) white goat looking digimon following closely behind him.
"Aw, thanks!" Gio replied to the man's compliment, beaming all the while. He grabbed his smaller brother by the arms and practically dangled him in front of the two newcomers, not unlike a kid showing off something cool he had found. "We do train a lot after all. He may not show it today but my bro Dio is usually way better than me at this."
"Flattery will get you nowhere..." The imp replied somewhat drily, looking a bit annoyed but not wanting to shut down his brother's obvious attempt at making him feel better over that loss.
Just before Carlos had a chance to say anything to the other two the man's digimon had already asked a question of her own involving, of all things, the events of a very particular Golden Week.
"The one where there was almost an attack against the humans, right?" Dio replied with a question, trying to jog his own memory a bit.
"Yeah if it's that one, then we were all there." Carlos said nonchalantly, his mind drifting back for a moment in time back to that particular day. It had been one of the first times he had brought the twins out for an important holiday. What a day that one turned out to be in the end. Of course as he reminisced about that crazy day, his memory was quick to point out a rather important detail. Both the other tamer and his valaismon had been there too, and arguably contributed a lot more to peacefully resolving the conflict that day."Ah crap now I remember, you guys were there too weren't you?"
He got back on his feet and dusted himself off a bit, before he extended his hand out to the two of them.
"It's been a while. Sorry, I don't think I ever got your names back then: I'm Carlos, these two here are Dio and Gio."
"Nice to meet you guys! Again!" Gio added with a nod, his hand slowly reaching out with the idea of petting the sheep like digimon's soft and fluffy head...before his hand was swiftly slapped back into place by the impmon's gloved hand, followed by a somewhat stern look, before he glanced back at the others with a far more calmed expression.
"Charmed."

Almost instinctively, a chuckle managed to slip it's way out of Skadi's mouth at the BlackGuilmon's antics with his grumpy brother, and Kenny couldn't help but resist a smile. There was just something so intriguing about the jet-black tiny T-Rex; one minute, a crazy-ass hellbeast that could take quite the punch and pay it back, tenfold to boot, the next, a happy-go-lucky adorable dork not just wearing his heart on his sleeve but also waving it around for all to see, who just so happened to also wear said crazy-ass hellbeast's skin at the exact same damn time.
Man, people were weird sometimes.
The two were quick to nod to the white-haired man as the mention of the Golden Week hullabaloo. No doubt that they would be more than happy to stay and chat that evening with the twin Tamer and his Digimon, but being forced to clear out ASAP once everything was said and done, lest the riot squad jump down their throats by mistake. It was quite annoying. Understandable, but still freaking annoying.
Regardless, Kenny was all to happy to shake the twin Tamer's - Carlos's - hand, "Is OK, man. I kinda wish we got to stay a little longer and chat with you guys, but, well... no prizes for guessing why we had to get out of there. The name's Kenny, and that's my partner, Skadi!"
In lieu of the usual wave and greeting, Skadi, ever the headpat magnet, had quickly caught wind of Gio trying to headpat her. Without even thinking, she stood up on the front of her hooves and poked her head up, ready to return the favour by happily bunting her egg-shaped noggin against his thick claws.
At least, she would, hadn't Dio slapped it away from her, forcing her feet to slump back into the ground, and her ears flopping around weakly in disappointment. What was wrong with that, honestly? Kenny would quickly return the favour by giving a reassuring headpat to Skadi, before following up with a more friendly one to Gio, "Ah, it's OK, Gio." Kenny piped up, "I don't think she minds, honestly. She's actually quite the affectionate fella - maybe a little too affectionate for her own good."
To say that was an understatement was vastly underselling it.
Still, Skadi's ear gave a small twitch as she tilted her head curiously, "So, uh, Gio. Dio. Why were you guys training today, anyways? Is there a big tournament or contest coming or something?" She asked them with a hint of interest in her voice. It was only natural Skadi would throw herself at everything and sundry, just to sate her curiosity and practically feed her boisterous spirit.
Just ask Valt.

"Yeah no kidding. If I have to get arrested I rather it be for something a bit more cooler than a non violent protest." Carlos jokingly said in response. Truth be told he was just glad that nobody had been caught that day, even if there probably wouldn't have been enough evidence to lock up any of the people involved for more than a day or two. Probably.
While the black scaled lizard seemed a bit down about his brother shooting down his first interaction with Skadi, her tamer was quick to reassure him and turn that pout upside down. Furthermore, Gio wasn't quite expecting a headpat from Kenny himself, but the content growl and ensuing wagging of his tail made it all too clear he was as open to them as Skadi apparently was. His desire to show affection returning, he first however turned to look at the still held imp with a triumphant, almost smug smile in his face, as if he was trying his best not to mockingly stick his tongue out.
"See?" With that out of the way, he extended out his own clawed hand and gave the goat a soft but firm pet. "Awww, you should try this out too Dio. Is so fluffy~" He exclaimed, voice filled with his usual childish delight, though his brother didn't seem all that impressed. Once that was done however he turned to look at her once again, mimicking her headtilt as he thought of an answer to her question.
"Oh, that? Well, because big bro here says I need to "expend my energy in a cons-truc-tive manner"." He said, placing special emphasis on that last part, as if repeating it from memory without quite understanding what any of those words really meant. "Also because well, it's fun!"
"That and because the Dark Lord and his brother should always be in tip-top fighting condition to face any possible threat to our future kingdom...and I guess the Digital World in general. One can't be expected to face things as the D-Reaper or worse without putting some effort to become stronger." Dio added in his usual grandiose tone befitting someone that usually pictured himself sitting atop a throne above all else. Which was certainly rather odd contrast when coming from someone that was only marginally taller than Skadi's eye level, and that was mostly thanks to someone taller than both of them holding him up.
"There are...more humble ways of putting it than that." The man meanwhile rubbed the back of his neck somewhat awkwardly, giving the other two an almost apologetic look because of his partner's little spiel. "Also you forgot the part where if we slack off on our own training our teacher will probably trash us around a bit again." After all, neither Valt nor Ryouta were exactly known for being all that lenient. At least, if their training so far had been of any indication of what was to come.
"Feh, details. How about you, Skadi? Here for "business or for pleasure", as some people would apparently say?" The imp asked her inquisitively, while Carlos visibly struggled against correcting the imp for his choice in expression.

Was there any surprise there that Skadi happily responded to Gio actually being able to pet her this time by happily bunting against his claws with his snout? Just because she was used to getting headpats from pretty much everyone and their own dog didn't mean she hated them herself.
Still, the Valaismon couldn't help but agree with Gio. Sparring was fun for her. Just ask Valt, and how most of the time, she was ready and willing to throw herself into the fray against him, his ulcers be damned. Bonus points if Ophelia also joined in. But Dio's comments claiming to be the 'Dark Lord', and his talk about 'their future kingdom'? Well, Kenny couldn't help but give a teasing chuckle, patting the Impmon on the head like a kid telling daddy what he drew for him today, before addressing Carlos with a little joke of his own, "Sounds too much like my own teachers when I was a wee lad back in year 3. They'd practically breathe down my throat for every single irrelevant mistake I made."
Yep, that dark humour had up and reared it's ugly head once more.
Skadi was all too happy to answer Dio's question, however, pushing herself up by standing up on the ends of her hooves to try and reach to his level (or the level that Gio was forcing himself up to as we speak), "I'm here because we have some free time today, and we decided it'd be a good idea to train ourselves up here today so I can improve myself. Kinda like you, actually." The Valaismon scratched at her cheek a little.
"Granted, after the last few missions where we were kinda lagging behind compared to a fair few individuals, strength wise at least," Kenny added on in reflection, "We do kinda need to iron out a few kinks, just in case we end up in, and pardon my French here, shit creek without a paddle." The missions involving the Bleached and the Sovereign did serve as quite a wake up call, the latter case essentially forcing Skadi to hide and sucker punch the threat rather than go in guns blazing with the rest.
It felt like almost yesterday since that meeting with a literal freaking God.

Had Kenny "dared" to lay a finger on the Dark Lord's royal head some time ago, he would have probably found himself on the receiving end of some scathing words at best, a barrage of fire at worst. Thankfully, Dio had since long left such petty overreactions in the past, having gained a bit of what the "common folk" referred to as "manners", so he simply opted to glare a bit at the human with a pout, even if on some level he did mostly enjoy headpats. Seeing that amount of restraint Carlos avoided making any kind of funny comments about it, instead simply replying to what the other man said.
"I hear ya. I do know a couple of people that certainly can make you feel...well let's just say like you're underperforming a bit and leave it at that." Carlos shrugged with a knowing look at Kenny after hearing his take on the matte. He knew what he meant all too well: it felt just like it had been barely a couple days since they had to be pretty much rescued by more capable fighters from what would have most likely been an early grave, despite that being nearly a year ago. And yet not that long ago they had managed to help out in bringing down something almost as strong as a God. A very weakened, not fully powered God but a God nonetheless! Clearly there had been some improvement at some point in time, even Carlos could see something that obvious.
"But! Rome wasn't built in a day, gotta work hard to get there. It's what grandma always said, at least."
Gio gave a nod in agreement, not completely understanding of everything Carlos had said but certainly sharing the sentiment! So much so that an odd thought seemed to spontaneously appear in his head, his expression shifting for a moment so much you'd swear you could hear the gears in his head turning. He'd soon give Skadi a warm smile however.
"Well...uhm, if you ever need a training partner Gio would love to help, Skadi. So would Dio!" He said cheerfully, shaking his brother about as he said so, much to his chagrin. Though for what was worth, Dio didn't seem too against that idea at the very least.
"I mean...that's certainly a possibility?" Carlos added looking back at the trio, also somewhat taken aback but much like Dio not being particularly in favor or against the idea. "Only if they want to, Gio."

"Heh, I get what you mean there, I've dealt with that sort of bullshit before." Kenny lightly joked, "Mainly with some... less than desirable people who looked more than happy to flaunt about how so much better than me they are, and happily rubbing that shit in my face whenever they get the chance to do so." It was an all too familiar scenario Kenny had to deal with, and not just in this day and age either; there was many a day his younger self had to deal with so-called 'friends' who'd rather leave him in the dust rather than give him a helping hand whenever necessary. Often to his own detriment, where his bouts of anger and chewing out the perpetrator often resulted in the latter happening.
"...Thank God I've been taking the happy pills, at least. I swear I'd be off my rocker by now."
But Gio's words, or more specifically, his offer to 'train' Skadi alongside his brother, made Skadi's ears twitch for a good, brief moment, as a wide grin started to emerge on her face. This would be perfect! While one could argue that a two-on-one battle in it of itself was a little unfair, in it of itself, experience alone had shown that, whenever fighting solo or with a fair few equally tough as nails allies, Skadi could more than well hold on her own, so frankly...
No prizes for guessing what Skadi's answer would be.
"Of course I want to!" Skadi was quick to reply the second Carlos stopped talking, already taking her place on her side of the battlefield without any hesitation. Once there, she was quick to pump her fists in excitement, ready to take whatever Gio and Dio could throw at her, "I'm ready when you are, guys! Bring it on!"
For a moment, Kenny blinked in surprise, before letting out a light chuckle once more, "Well, I can't argue with that logic," He said as he rejoined Skadi, gripping his D-Nexus lightly just in case, "Honest to God, I wish I had a quarter of her energy; she's practically a wild child, you can't win with her. Trust me, I tried."
It wasn't an insult towards the three boys, it was basically coming from experience alone; when it came to stuff like this, 9 times out of 10, he'd lose control of his partner, at which point, he was pretty much content to throw up his hands and yell 'screw it', and let her do her own thing. She was no danger to anyone other than the most despicable individual, but friendly sparring matches and exhibition matches was more or less an excuse to go wild.
Regardless, she was ready for anything.

"There's people like that everywhere." Carlos shrugged, somewhat resigned. "Best you can do is take what they say with a grain of salt and find a way to prove them wrong. Or just block it out and find better people, either works." It wasn't a perfect solution, but to him it was better than the alternatives.
To say Skadi immediatelly agreeing with Gio's idea was expected would be an understatement, but neither of the twins expected her to want to throw down right then. Once the initial surprise passed however, a beaming smile took over Gio's expression. It was hard to tell what made him happier, the prospect of sparring again or having found someone that shared his eagerness this much, but regardless he was quick to oblige her request.
"Yay! Come on bro!" The guilmon didn't even wait for his "bro" to get a say in the matter, practically dragging him into their side of the arena by the scruff of his bandana. The imp was understandably a bit taken aback, but was quick to resign himself to his fate. There was no arguing with his brother over this, he had to comply. "Ha! "Trust me", I can imagine." Carlos replied, clearly amused not only by this whole situation but just how...similar his relation with his partners was to Kenny and Skadi's, down to their eagerness to fight and generally do anything remotly fun, really. It was as if both men had been suddenly thrown into some bizarro child care crash course and had both been paired with the loudest most energetic kids in the whole world. Not that he could complain really, he had really grown to appreciate the other two in an somewhat brotherly manner.
"Better not hold back Skadi. It's two against one." The imp boasted, less to intimidate or remind Skadi than it was to help psyche himself up for what was to come. Truth be told, he too was now a bit curious to see what would come out of this. As for Gio? Well...he was besides himself.
"Good luck Ska!" He cheered to the goat as his stance shifted, head getting closer to the ground as his legs tensed, looking not unlike a cat ready to pounce at an unsuspecting bird, waiting for Skadi to take the first move in their ensuing chaotic "dance".

No surprise there that Gio looked just to be as, if not more, excited than Skadi to start the spar already. Kenny could only chuckle once more as he casually eyed the excitable young(?) Tyrannosaurus dragging his brother like a ragdoll strapped to the back of a speeding car, all the while Carlos gave some slight commentary upon his friendly opponent's own partner. While Skadi was quite the wild child by herself, she was, in retrospect, one singular Digimon.
He swore he wouldn't last five minutes locked up in a solitary room alongside Gio and Skadi being left to their own devices.
But Skadi? Yeah, she honestly didn't need Dio reminding her, bless his heart, that this may looked a little unbalanced from the outset, but this was Skadi we're talking about. She loved any good challenge that came her way, come hell or highwater. And Gio wishing her luck already put a wide grin on her face, as she gave him a nod and thumbs up back to the Guilmon.
Kenny, on the other hand, just smiled at Gio, "I don't think she really needs luck, pal. Like I said, girl's got a crazy amount of bravery and bravido inside of her, I'm sure she'll be fine."
Speaking of, already a freezing cold aura started to form over Skadi, as bits of cold, icy armour slowly started to form over her entire body, but if Dio and/or Gio anticipated that she'd charge in dead ahead, guns a-blazing, then they'd be mistaken. Rather, she stood her ground and gave a solid punch onto the earth below.
And just like that, the floor would start to rumble, and, with the exception of Skadi, everybody within vicinity risked getting tripped up, hadn't they jumped out of the way or anything. Already Kenny was starting to fight for balance, waving his arms about to keep himself steady and still with two feet stuck onto the floor.
But otherwise, the humans would pretty much escaped virtually unharmed. Gio and Dio's chances, however, didn't look too bright, and if the earthquake alone wasn't enough to trip them up and throw them off, her little surprise would. Cracks underneath the floor would only appear momentarily under Dio's feet, followed by a massive spire, threatening to pierce him and send him flying hadn't he gotten away in time.
It was more of a strategy she had in mind; take down the head, and the body would soon follow.
Skadi starts off the battle in kind, as while she prepares her Frostcloak, which will fully come into effect next post, she aims to strike Dio first with Spiral Pillar, with the earthquake in question opting to try and slow both him and Gio in the meantime to buy her time for herself.
Spiral Pillar (RAM Upgrade): Skadi punches or stomps the floor, causing a small tremor up to a 7 meter radius, which can disorient everyone except herself. In that radius, a 5 meter spire emerges out of the ground to attack the opponent almost immediately. The only warning they get are cracks on the ground underneath their feet. This attack can pierce Rookie-level defence buffs and passives, and break shields for maximum possible damage. If this attack hits a Champion level instead, then this attack does 50% of the maximum damage to them if they have any passives or buffs active that would otherwise decrease it, or if a shield is active (but does not break it). Ally Digimon may be affected by the earthquake as well (but cannot be damaged by it). However, the spire will never hit an ally. If there are more than one enemy in the radius, Skadi can select who gets hit by the spire, but all of them can be affected by the earthquake regardless, leaving them open to attack from allies. (3 post cooldown)
Frostcloak (RAM Upgrade GIGA): Skadi freezes over her body to create herself an additional set of armour, giving herself additional defence from her opponents. This ability automatically bumps up all her defences up by 30%, and prevents her from being affected from any debuffs from anything the opponent may have for 3 posts. (3 post cooldown)
Passives: Fluffy Bulk (Passive): Skadi's thick coat is, well, really thick for a Rookie level. She takes -30% less damage from all physical attacks thrown her way.
Buffs/Nerfs: Frostcloak (+30% all defence, ignore all debuffs): 0/3
Cooldowns: Spiral Pillar: 0/3 Frostcloak: Active
