An Uncertain Arrival [KIZNA]
|
Post by Malik on Feb 13, 2020 10:39:54 GMT
A sense of uncertainty froze Malik in place as he looked towards the ancient city in the distance. He was offered a place with an organization known as KIZNA, but after seeing the capital itself he began to feel as if this was a bad idea. The Lopmon took a few more shaky steps towards the barrier "They...they'll accept me. Right? Maybe they'll figure out something about m-my weird data...but what if that makes them mad?" He huddled up slightly and shook at the thought.
Malik clenched his fists and stood up. "I-I have to try..." He thought about Mei and Keramon. They believed in him. They wouldn't want him to back away form this now. Still, where would he even begin with a place like this? With a little more confidence in his step, he began to move forward into the city proper.
As he passed through the barrier around the city with no issues, he found himself greeted by an astounding view of a city unlike anything he's ever seen. To the small, young explorer, it was almost maze-like. He leaned over the edge of one of the roads to see one of the many canals that flow throughout the city. He hopped away and continued his exploration, admiring the architecture of the blue city. "Where do I...even begin...?" He mused to himself as he walked as fast as his little legs could allow.
"Hello?" He called out nervously. He didn't know who lived here, how many there were, or if they'd even help out a stranger who showed up out of nowhere. He sighed to himself as he searched for anywhere he could rest. He had been traveling for a while to get here. Eventually he came across a bench and happily jumped onto it so he could rest for a time. "What could...I do for them? Do I...have a valuable skill...?" He muttered. He had a love of reading...perhaps he could learn things from whatever books KIZNA had at its disposal and figure something out from there? That implied they would let him...he tugged at his ears, frustrated with his constant worrying. "Why can't I just have quiet thoughts for once..." He groaned. He looked around and his head spun at how many different paths there were. This was going to take a while to navigate by himself. For now, he'd stay on the bench and try to relax his mind a bit before continuing onward.

Things had been relatively peaceful in Kenny and Skadi's life for a while now. And, going into the new year, especially since the first anniversary of their entrance into KIZNA was starting to rear its not-quite ugly head, they knew that a whole set of new challenges would await them in the year ahead.
So days like these were plenty welcomed for the both of them, especially for Kenny, as he happily took advantage of the time distillation to ready himself for the university entrance exams. The cool air and the welcoming layout of Ys put their minds at ease, and, especially after a long gruelling mission, helped them to relax.
Of course, days like these still warranted their own fair share of surprises; take, for example, as Kenny and Skadi were out to grab some lunch. Nothing much. Everyone did need to eat after all. But as they walked, they could hear a voice mutter in worry near them, coming from the benches, making them stop and turn towards the source; it was a anxious looking Lopmon, just sitting on a bench and fidgeting about.
Skadi scratched her chin for a moment as she glanced at them, "That guy over there looks a little nervous. Maybe he got lost or something."
Kenny gave a quiet, self-aware chuckle, "I don't blame him. I remember when we first came here, I thought we would've been up shit creek without a paddle without Ryouta and Valt guiding us, honestly. You think we should we go help him?" After all, it just wouldn't be right to let someone who looked lost wallow in his own fears. It was of KIZNA members to help others; camaraderie was important, after all.
"Why not?" Skadi just shrugged, "He seems like a nice guy. And besides, I'm always open for a few new friends around here." Kenny just let out another chuckle, and soon, the two were close up towards the lost, fidgeting Lopmon on the bench in a matter of a few moments, Skadi happily keeping pace up with Kenny, as per usual, and even giving a friendly wave towards the Lopmon as she did.
Once they finally approached him, Kenny was first to speak, as he leaned down to get to the Lopmon's level, as Skadi gave the Lopmon a kind, friendly smile, "Are you OK, man? You look a little lost and confused. We can help you if you want." Upon finishing, Skadi nodded at him eagerly. Kenny's KIZNA badge could be seen glistening in the bright sunlight up above. It made do for days he didn't need to wear his uniform on casual days like this.

Malik's constant worrying and internal monologues were interrupted as he heard someone approach him. Despite those struggles, his expression is neutral. Blank, even. He stared at the human and the Digimon that approached him for a while before he finally took notice of the KIZNA badge the human wore. "...KIZNA." He stated plainly. "I was told to seek out Ys and the organization that made its home there." He stood up from the bench and looked between the two. "My name is Malik. I am here to see about joining your organization."
His proposal to join was rather blunt and direct. His expression didn't really change that much either. "If...that is okay." He said with the faintest hint of nervousness. "I do not know what I can do to assist your cause, but I am a quick learner and I love to read. Perhaps I can pick up some skills if I study whatever books you have."
He paced around slightly as he thought some more "I hope I am not imposing. I was reborn not very long ago and wish to find my path, perhaps find an answer to why I can't remember my other lives or why my data seems...scrambled. Strange. I'm rambling, I apologize." The Lopmon's vocabulary and articulation seemed pretty advanced for a young Digimon at least. Definitely the bookish type. "I'm being rude. I haven't asked for your names. I'm sorry, what may I call you two?"
Malik stood at attention and once more stared at the human and Digimon as he awaited an answer. Bookish, maybe a bit high strung. There was definitely something going through this Lopmon's head, but he tried his hardest to be presentable and kind to the two. He didn't want to ruin his chances at joining KIZNA, though his people skills were still a work in progress.

Well, that was quite the surprise. It seemed that Lopmon looked pretty keen on joining KIZNA himself. At first, Kenny and Skadi found themselves raising their eyebrows in surprise for a brief moment, but they were willing to listen to him explain himself and his reasons for wanting to join, taking in everything what he had to say. Interestingly, while he seemed to remember that he had past lives to begin with, they were basically fuzzy at best. But why though?
After the Lopmon finished his little speech, Kenny just smiled, "I'm Kenny, and that little Valaismon down there is my partner, Skadi." He gestured to the happily waving sheep Digimon, before lightly patting Malik on the head, "And don't worry about it. I tend to ramble a little too much for my own good, too. You're with friends here, man."
After letting out a light chuckle, he continued, "So, about joining KIZNA... We're more primarily focused on research and exploration, so expect quite a bit of walking and excersize for our team missions, for one. We tend to do that a lot."
Skadi quietly gave Kenny a little nudge, "Of course, I could always digivolve to my Champion form and save you quite the trouble, you know." She winked at the both of them knowingly.
"I know, Skadi. I know." He lightly teased as he ruffled the giggling sheep's hair, before turning back to Malik, "Of course, we do have 3 divisions that could put any of your skills to good use. The Assault and Combat Division is mainly reserved for the more battle hardened members who help defend Ys and the Digital World when danger arises. The Research and Exploration Division is more or less exactly what it says in the title, while Craftsmanship and Development members are able to craft useful artifacts to help the team, among other things."
"...sorry, I just rambled off myself again," Kenny lightly joked as he rubbed the back of his neck, "So, what are your skills, exactly, Malik?" He finished off as Skadi tilted her head curiously.

The two of them didn't seem overly concerned with his presence or behavior. That was quite the relief to Malik. The human, Kenny, even reached over to pat him on the head. Such an affectionate gesture, and he always seemed to get one from the people he met. He wondered why, but he wouldn't worry about that right now. They had questions for him after they listed off the various divisions of KIZNA to him. Combat...he felt that being too directly involved in combat would be out of the question for a Digimon of his level...though that would likely change soon. Research and Exploration sounded promising, but his own fuzzy recollection of the Digital World seemed more a hindrance than anything.
"I can read...what you have to offer, and learn how everything works here..." He repeated. "That's...all I'm really skilled at. Reading...and information retention. I do not think I am spectacular at any one skill, but...perhaps the Craftsmanship division could use someone like me. I'm too weak to fight...for the moment, and my general knowledge...is near useless as it is. I do not think I would be a good researcher."
"Who else should I get to know here? It was a Digimon and her human...both named...Mei...who told me to come here. I don't know...anyone else from KIZNA aside from them and you two." He said. He marveled at the city around them "It's...impressive what your team has found...I hear it is a center of much research. Maybe...you have a way to help me understand my data. I would like any information that can be found. But...for now...please show me around, or take me wherever we have to go for me to formally join your group." He stood up, clearly ready to go.

Both Kenny and Skadi stood there, listening to Malik figure his out and determine his 3 options; before rationalising that Craftsmanship would be his strong point. And honestly? For someone willing to learn and develop their own craft, it just felt right, "Yeah, that does sound like a good idea, honestly." Kenny noted with interest, "It could easily be a good way for a learner like you to help develop your skills. After all, some people do learn a lot better by being a little more hands on, if you ask me." He chuckled a little. He was speaking from experience here; he honestly did much better when he learnt to do things directly rather than simply listening.
The mention of the two Meis, however, made Skadi's ears twitch a bit, and immediately, memories flooded back to Kenny. Honestly, that day on the beach taught him and Skadi a lot of valuable lessons, including how he had to conduct himself a little better, word himself a little better, and most importantly, that, as a Tamer, he was just as important in his bond with Skadi as his partner as she was to him.
It still lingered in his mind to this very day.
Still, he had to keep that in his head for now, and his focus lay more onto answering Malik's concerns, "Yeah, we can take you for an interview today in the Sanction Unionis." He said as he got up, and gestured the Lopmon to follow, "Honestly, if we could list off all the KIZNA members we know of, we'd be here all day; I'd think we'd be better off focusing on trying to meet up with at least some of the head honchos, at least."
As they walked along, Skadi turned to Malik and smiled at him excitedly, "My papa Hikaru is the king of Ys! He helps keep the city up and running with his tamer, Yuuki. Unfortunately, they're very busy individuals a lot of the time, considering the heavy responsibilities they both need to deal with. Still, hopefully someday you'll get to meet him!"

At the same time, Malik felt a little hesitant in his decision. He liked stories. Fiction. Manuals and learning material could be difficult for him at first, but he was willing to put forth the effort if it meant he had a shot at helping KIZNA. Kenny's words of encouragement were also very effective and elicited the tiniest smile from Malik "Th..thank you, Kenny. That is very nice of you to say. It's...v-very encouraging." He said. He wanted to improve and live up to his own expectations. He wanted to feel like he was contributing.
Soon he may get his chance to officially begin, as it seemed there was time to conduct an interview today. He nodded "An interview..." He was nervous at the prospect, but this was a logical step for him to officially join KIZNA. Once they started moving, Malik would follow close behind, blank stare taking in the surrounding area that would be his home for the foreseeable future.
Malik wondered just how many were involved with the group. Many, apparently since it would take a while to list the members they knew of. At the very least they would be meeting up with some of the leaders. The idea made him freeze up a bit as his nerves got the better of him. He tried to hide his nervousness by staring at random things nearby to make it seem like he was just curiously glancing around, but his slightly shaking legs might give it away. Soon enough he would start walking to catch up with them.
"Papa...?" He tilted his head at Skadi "Oh...I don't really know who my...parents are. No one in the village ever...approached me. T-that's amazing that he's...so important here. I'm sorry...that he seems so busy though...that must be hard sometimes."
So far the city of Ys was very impressive. No matter how hard he thought about it, nothing he had seen matched up to it. Now he was on his way to be a part of the group that helped bring this city to its current glory. "I...really hope I'm cut out for this..." He muttered softly.

There was something about Malik that resonated within Kenny as he saw him look around the city on the way there. It felt like only yesterday when he and Skadi were the newbies being led around the city by a couple of way more experienced individuals. Now here they were, following in Ryouta and Valt's footsteps as they led Malik onto the Sanctuarium Unionis building for his faithful interview.
The tamer briefly rubbed his eyes; did he see that the Lopmon's legs shaking for a moment? He and Skadi stopped in place for a brief moment, with the tamer simply calling out to him to try and snap the Lopmon out of what seemed to be a trance, "Malik! You OK, man?" Once he caught up with the rest of the group, they could proceed as normal.
It was only natural to be nervous, after all.
Skadi raised a little eyebrow in surprise as she listened to Malik explain about his own parents - or rather, the lack of them. But on his concerns about her papa? She merely waved a hand dismissively to him, "Don't worry about it. Papa knows I can take care of myself. He loves me and trusts that I can always be relied upon to do the right thing. Isn't that right, Kenny?"
Kenny chuckled a little bit in response as he turned his head to the both of them, "Most of the time, anyways. Need, I remind you that you often keep making crazy bets with Valt behind my back. Without my permission, mind you." He lightly teased, ruffling the Valaismon's hair, "I prefer my clothes and your wool clean, thank you very much."
"Aw, you're no fun, Kenny!" Skadi jokingly pouted, before turning back to her Lopmon companion, "Kenny can be a bit of a spoilsport sometimes, Malik. Don't worry about him."
"I heard that!" Kenny was quick to cry foul. Before he could continue further, the group would find themselves at the foot of the Sanctuarium Unionis, or at least, one of the two majestic ebony conjoined buildings that both loomed over the three below them, glistening in the sun gloriously. Their location.
Perfect.
"Well, looks like we're here!" Kenny smiled, looking up at his home. As he put his hand on the door, he turned over to Malik, "You coming in, man?" A look of concern started to spread across his face as he heard the Lopmon mutter worryingly under his breath. Was he nervous or anything? Especially since he had been going it alone so far?
Skadi just lightly pat his back, "Don't worry, Malik. You'll be fine. Just be yourself, I'm sure they'll like you for who you are." Her gentle tone complimented that reassuring remark to the Lopmon. Would it be enough to ease his worries, only time would tell. But they knew Malik would knock it out of the park. He had to.
They did have faith in him, after all.

He jumped slightly as Kenny addressed him, though it was just to see if he was doing okay. He sighed softly "I-I'm okay. Just...not really sure what to do or say..." He said, still near paralyzed with his nervousness. Still he soldiered on and managed to keep pace with the other two. Skadi went on to explain that her father has absolute faith in her. To have such a supportive figure...a parental figure. That was something he definitely lacked.
He looked at the two of them and listened in on their banter. Crazy bets? Sounds like they were no stranger to weird misadventures despite their status. It was a little surprising to him as he expected a group as professional and renown as KIZNA would be all business all the time. He only nodded at Skadi when she mentioned Kenny being a spoilsport. He remembered back when he made the other Digimon in the village uncomfortable just by being around them. Was he a 'spoilsport' too? He tilted his head slightly and seemed concerned, but otherwise realized that this was all just friendly banter between the two. "You two...must have known each other for a long time...it's nice to see such good friends..."
He stared up at the really impressive display that was the Sanctuarium. "Huh?" He looked at Kenny when he asked if he was going to go in. Just...walk in? It was that simple? A place like this? He jumped a bit when Skadi pat his back. Just be himself? Just be himself...lots of people were telling him that. But himself was...dull, wasn't it? He wasn't sure how to really emote or express himself properly if it wasn't pure anxiety or a blank stare. He would definitely need to work on that. "Okay. O-okay, I'll do my best. You both...really seem to think I can do this, so I'll...I'll do this." He said, nerves settling down a little bit, but not completely. Malik even smiled a bit as he realized just how much these two believed in him.

In that moment, a shadow fell over them. Not a very big one, but if they looked upward, they would see a small furry dragon gliding down to their position. His fur was mostly purple, but for white on his underside and paws. His eyes, wings and scarf were yellow, and his sleeveless jacket bearing the KIZNA sigil on its back was red. Lastly his tail-tip resembled something of a war-hammer.
In the next few seconds, the figure would land near them on his hind legs, standing upright, albeit at a small height of 4'1". He smiled at them.
"Gudday there! I'm Bezil, one of the admins of KIZNA. Nice to meet you." he said brightly to Malik, speaking with a youthful Australian accent. He was already friends with Kenny and Skadi, so since he saw them speaking pleasantly to this new person, he assumed they were a good one.
"Heya, Kenny, Skadi, sorry I'm a bit late, was just finishing reading a story to our little brother Lewis." he explained to them, then turned back to the Lopmon. "So, what brings you here, mate? Anything we can help you with?"
If the Lopmon was here to hire their services for exploration, he'd be delighted to accept. He didn't yet know that Malik intended to join them, or indeed, what any of his intentions were. But he wanted to be helpful to him as long as he intended to be peaceful.

To be honest, who could really blame Malik for being nervous, having come out of the woodwork to put himself out there and put his foot through the door? KIZNA was a really huge organisation, with a lot of big names, to boot, of course it would be perfectly natural for a newbie like him to be nervous. Thankfully, the smile on his face, small as it was, was enough to reassure the duo. The two looked at him and gave him a confident nod.
Another reassuring chuckle came from Kenny as he put his hand on the door, "Of course we do, Malik. It's one of the 4 major rules of KIZNA - camaraderie is important. That's because- wait, what's going on." The looming shadow over his body was initially enough to shut Kenny up like that, making his heart pound rapidly for a few moments. Thankfully, as he and Skadi turned to see Bezil introduce himself, his heartbeat slowed to a more normal pace. Skadi was quick to greet him, of course, happily jumping and waving in a bid to grab his attention.
"Bezil! Great to see you again, big bro!" As soon as he introduced himself, Skadi didn't hesitate herself to run over to the fuzzy drake, arms outstretched as she leapt in for a big hug, The more mature Kenny would chuckle once more as he pet Bezil on the head gently.
"Ah, it's OK, man." Kenny was quick to reassure the Gumdramon. before gesturing to the Lopmon, "We were just showing this little guy around Ys. His name's Malik. Rest assured he's perfectly fine and safe with us." Even with the massive barrier that surrounded the ancient city, it wasn't all too common to see a newcomer nearly get lost in the sheer massive size that could put even the largest CBD to shame.
With Bezil now asking the Lopmon the all too important question, the duo would nod at Malik once more. Skadi would once again pat his back, and simply whispered a quiet "Go on, you can do it." in his ear. After all, he didn't succumb to his nerves when he introduced himself to them.
And hopefully he wouldn't do the same here.

He relaxed a little bit as Kenny began to reassure him, but he froze up again when he saw the shadow overhead slowly descend on the group. He was panicked, but soon the friendly face of a Gumdramon greeted the group in an equally friendly tone. He watched Skadi excitedly go for a hug as Kenny pat his head. Bezil was his name, apparently, and was obviously good friends with the two.
Malik gave an awkward little wave towards Bezil as he was introduced "Y-yes. Hello." He said. He hesitated, but he was pat on the back by Skadi and stepped forward a little bit. "I-It's very nice to meet you, Bezil. My name...i-is Malik and I'm h-here to join KIZNA. I can't promise I'll be of m-much help but I'm more than willing to...t-to try." Poor thing was absolutely paralyzed with nerves.
"I'm a fast learner and I l-love to read. I'd like to help with research and d-development in your crafting division. A-at least once I prove myself, that is. I'll work as hard as I can to figure out the ins and outs of w-working here, I promise that." He gave an awkward salute with his usual stone-faced expression, but his legs were trembling from how nervous he was.
He let out a deep sigh "I-I'm sorry. I'm not used to t-talking with people l-like this. I hope it isn't a b-bother." He said as he worried he might have been more formal than was really necessary. "S-still my point stands and I will do everything I can to fit in!"

Bezil chuckled and exchanged Skadi's hug. "Heya, Skadi, good to see you again, lil sis." he said. Even if she had been adopted into the family, Bezil still accepted her in it as much as he would Persephone, Hasenya, Jill or Bu.
The furred Gumdramon also didn't mind Kenny patting his head, given that he did it nicely. It was a gesture he had come to appreciate from humans, although he had to make a conscious effort to not wag his tail and smash something.
Kenny then introduced Bezil to the Lopmon, who was named Malik. Bezil understood right away that Malik was very shy, so he respectfully kept his distance and would take note to not pressure him.
"So, you're here to join KIZNA, eh?" Bezil asked, scratching his chin. "And you're good with R&D for crafting? Well, just so happens we have a position open. And seeing as Kenny and Skadi seem to vouch for you, yeah, we can give you a go for joining."
He took care to speak in a softer voice, kneeling down on one knee so that he was more on Malik's eye level. "That's alright. As long as you're willing to give it a go, that's all we ask from you. Even if it doesn't work out, I'm sure you'll be welcome to stay in Ys and have another go later." he assured him. He smiled as Malik explained he wasn't used to talking to others like this. "That's okay too. We're all kinda nervous on our first day. But I'm sure you'll grow into it, you seem like a good bloke."
With that done, Bezil stood back up again. "So then, with introductions taken care of, what's the situation? Still showing Malik around or are we ready to get started on our little expedition?" he asked Kenny and Skadi.

It was clear that there was no love lost between the tamer/Digimon duo, and the fuzz-covered drake. If at the very least, it was enough to telegraph to Malik that Bezil was nowhere close to being a malicious threat. The 'big sis' compliment was enough for Skadi to giggle uncontrollably and nuzzle Bezil affectionately, until Kenny went to pry her gently from the Gumdramon before it just became overkill.
With introductions out of the way and Malik stepping up to the plate to propose to Bezil about joining the team, all Kenny and Skadi could do was watch without interrupting either. Skadi, however, would quickly find her attention gravitate towards Malik as he stuttered his way through his introduction. Her normally perky ears would slowly start to fall limp as she twiddled her chubby fingers, "Poor kid." She whispered.
Kenny lightly bit his lip, "He kinda reminds me of me when we first started out here, honestly." He muttered, also glancing at the shaking Lopmon, "Y'know, worrying about how badly he thinks he's going to fail and embarrass himself and shit. That's not fun. I wish I could do something to help calm his nerves somehow. If you ask me, Bezil's already knocking it out of the park." After all, Bezil didn't earn the title of admin by just sitting on his hands and waiting for the opportunity to come knocking, and the two would nod to Malik to help hammer the Gumdramon's words in just a little more as soon as he finished.
Casually shuffling his hands into his pockets as Bezil addressed the two now, Kenny's eyes widened a little in surprise, before he rubbed the back of his head with a chuckle, "Oh, yeah! The expedition. We were so busy trying to help Malik I almost forgot about that it was today... wait... Malik..."
His eyes drifted over to Malik once more. He did say he loved to learn, right? And they did bring up that some people did learn a lot better when they up and got their hands deep and dirty into the nitty-gritty of things. Slowly but surely, as everything started to click together perfectly in his head, a knowing smile grew on Kenny's face; a little titbit that wasn't lost on Skadi too easily.
"Kenny, what're you thinking?" She tilted her head up towards Kenny with a hint of curiosity. One subtle ear twitch later, and a similar smile would follow suit upon the sheep-goat's face. He knew what to do here. She knew what he had in mind. It would be bloody perfect for someone willing to be as so hands-on (or, giant floppy ears-on) like Malik.
"Hey Malik," Kenny shot a glance over to the worrywart Lopmon, "Why don't you join us on the expedition today? It could be a good chance to show us what you can really do. After all, like I said earlier, some people are just better learners hands on. Hell, who knows? You might even be able to blow us away, too! Sound good to you guys?"
Skadi gave an all-too eager nod to both Malik and Kenny, throwing an arm around his shoulders, "So what do you say? You want to join us on the expedition?" She winked.
Stifling a chuckle, Kenny turned back to Bezil, "Don't worry, we got ourselves packed earlier."

Malik was taken aback by just how friendly Bezil was being towards him. Was everyone in KIZNA this patient and warm towards newcomers? He seemed to be familiar with Kenny and Skadi as well. This sort of warmth was strange to him. Everyone he had met after he left the Village of Beginnings approached him and extended the hand of friendship. Even the other young Digimon there started to treat him better once a misunderstanding was resolved.
"Y-yes. I have a d-decent memory so I can figure these things out really fast. I-I hope. I would be honored to join, I just hope I have the talent to make you all proud." He said with a little bow of his head. He even offered for him to stay and try again if he had to? This was so unreal. "Thank you very much." He said with a blush as Bezil said he seemed like a good person.
Then came the question of some kind of expedition and if Malik would want to come along. "Expedition? Already? I...well..." He looked around a bit. He had all the time in the world to explore Ys at his leisure, so in a surge of confidence he nodded "Y-yes, of course. I'll come along and do what I can."
He mustered a small smile "T-thank you all for giving me this opportunity! I promise I'll give it all I can and be a valuable member of KIZNA." He seemed happy. Happy to be accepted and to have this opportunity to have a place to belong. There were other things he was curious about, but those could wait until much later. For now, he wanted to focus on helping with whatever this expedition was.
