”Always somethin ain’t it?”
The heramon gave a shake of her head and rolled the newspaper up before sticking it into one of her bags. It was her newspaper which meant to her it was free; but there was a lot wrong with it this time around. She had stepped back to help skald with getting his stuff set up for bell but… This was just ridiculous. They ran stuff she never would want to and well.. It just looked terrible! Other than the job section and a couple others well… She’d have to talk to them about this!
She’d grumble a bit and pull out one of the beefsticks she had picked up; some human snack that she couldn’t get enough of. They came in different flavors and varieties and she was glad that she could manage to get some. Even if they were kind of expensive if you didn’t know where to look.
The demonic goat stepped quietly down the street, taking her time. Making it like a stroll. It had just become dark proper as the sun had more or less been wanting to go down for a bit. She was really glad about that part. Night-time made her feel so alive, so refreshed. Maybe it was because she was part of the darkness in more ways than one… or that it was just less annoying and a bit more quiet in her neck of the woods.
”Idiots don’t know how to run shit without me. I swear. I’m gonna strangle that kid…”
Editor extraordinaire her ass. She’d flick her ears some and take another bite out of the beefstick. She’d switch it out for some jerky after a minute or two of chewing. What to do… what to do..
”Tch… spose I’ll have to see if I can find someone to make that dunderhead understand what ‘artistic’ value looks like. My eyes are practically bleeding from that paper jeesh..”
Maybe that or she’d have to overhaul the system herself. Last time it was just fine and didn’t look like some six year old had done it. She really needed to work on a blueprint or something for them so that they knew what to make it look like. She figured with all the extra prints laying around she wouldn’t have that issue!
Then there was that bit for bell, bit for skald and her own area she was trying to keep track of. She’d lean up against a wall and consider quietly what she could do. Maybe pull in gertrude? Get in contact with vivian?
”Tch… both of them would do well but one of them prefers fighting and the other can’t bloody read… blind druid and she can’t even heal her own sight… I swear.” More mumbling, more sour notes and… well if the heramon stayed out for too much longer there’d be staring eyes she’d have to deal with. She was well known in these parts sure but… there was always some idiot trying to test his luck on this twin!

For all it was hyped up to be Terminus City might have been the pride of many of its citizens, but integrating into this community wasn’t as easy for strangers. Maybe it was her rookie level that made others doubt her. Or perhaps it was that she was an outsider that made others distrust her. Either way, as a tsukaimon she found it difficult to make a living here. Temporary setbacks, she’d have to tell herself.
“Temporary setbacks,” her voice echoed softly in dry amusement. Human lips curled into a wry smile as she stared at the hands holding her newspaper up to read. Fingers were such useful little things. Something she hoped to gain after digivolving. For the time being Desdemona had to rely on her holosuit for such conveniences.
She resumed browsing the paper’s classified ads intent on finding the next step up to her lofty goals. Des hadn’t bothered looking at the rest of the newspaper; it was such an unorganized and chaotic mess that it aggravated her to a degree. For all its offence, it was a small solace that the only part she was truly interested in was somewhat legible. Seated on the edge of a roof with her legs dangling over the edge she idly kicked her legs out in boredom. Backlit by a large neon advertising sign she was bathed in bright pastel colors as the night finished its slow suffocation of the sun.
An immaterial pressure distracted her from her reading. It was a sense that put her on edge not out of dread of the unknown, but the dread of the known. There was something evil nearby, and as a fellow practitioner of dedicated self interest Des was fully aware of the threat that posed. She folded her paper up neatly as she scanned the street below. Curious eyes fell upon the crimson goat. It was a digimon Desdemona wasn’t familiar with, and that intrigued her. Whoever she was, the goat seemed irate with something. Des rolled up her newspaper and tapped an end against her chin thoughtfully for a few moments as she observed the scene. A playful smile tugged at her lips before she stood up and pixelated the rolled up newspaper, downloading it to her personal inventory.
She turned her holosuit off long enough to glide over silently above the goat. Once she was in position the human facade came back on. She landed gracefully on her feet beside her quarry, accompanied by the soft ringing of the four small spherical bells adorning her. As if her entrance was the most natural thing in the Digital World Des folded her arms across her chest and leaned back on the same wall the goat used.
“The night just started, so why all the fuss?” she asked calmly as if speaking to an old friend. Her human form smiled amiably up at the other digimon, eyes shining like golden coins in the dim lighting. “Don’t break my heart and tell me a fancy mon like you doesn’t have a place to be at right now?”

Maybe because her focus was off that the heramon didn’t sense the approaching mon. Maybe because of how she was agravated that the large goat demon was just not paying full attention. She’d growl and look over the newspaper again finding it just more and more annoying. Herald let out a small sigh after a bit and just shook her head. It was annoying and there was very little she could do about it.
So when… the abrupt apperance of a companion occured the goat wasn’t exactly in the mood immediately. She’d flick both ears and her eyes swiveled to where this person was. Her senses reaching and stretching; her defensive motion of a hand going to her side as though she was going to pull something from her body that was truly cruel.
But then the facade in front of her had her interested. A mon in a holosuit? There was always that muted feeling when one was using it even in the digital world. She’d tilt her head; sliding that hand down off of her hip and flicking those ears as she heard those small bells ring. She… wasn’t sure what to make about this honestly.
”The local newspaper. I run it. Or at least a branch of it. So seeing this hodge podge of nonsense in my reputable section makes me angry.”
She’d huff a bit and fold her arms, looking to the other. Her ears flicking as the other seemed to think that she had other places to be… Could she perhaps… sense what herald was about? Mons of mystical nature often could or those that were perceptive enough. Perhaps… she’d play.
”Oh I do. I have many places that require my attention. From a small bar my brother runs to the local newspaper… and a few things in between too.”
The mon tilted her head and leaned forward, dangerously close. Her eyes weren’t anything like other mons, they seemed dark and lifeless but held those strange red motes of light that you could easily tell they were there. The soft glimmer of curiosity and playfulness in them led to another question. Another statement.
”What about you friend? You got places to be? If not I could use a companion for a little bit.”
Herald was quick to pick up on the tone, she was a defensive fighter and if this mon wanted to play well… She would give them something to play with. If it was words or perhaps they wanted something greater? She didn’t know.
So maybe she’d set out a little bait, find out a little bit about them on the way. Have some drinks, enjoy one another’s company. It wasn’t too often that herald got the feeling of another caster like this. Or another person that she could get along with. Senses colliding with one another and all that...
"Does herald's friend got a name? Or do I have to use some descriptor? Cutie sounds nice if I'm being honest..."

The threatening gesture the goat had initially made was somewhat alarming, but Des stood her ground. Confidence, or even simply the visage of it, was a deterrent in its own rights when played properly. The gamble paid off, and a conversation began. A conversation with some intriguing takeaways. Staring back at the crimson pinpricks of light as the goat leaned in close, Desdemona’s shoulders rolled off an easygoing shrug.
“I’ve got a few places to be, sure,” she commented in an amused tone, “..but none that I want to be at more than right here, right now.” She pushed herself off of the wall as her posture straightened, but even then she was easily dwarfed by Herald who stood several feet taller than herself. “Herald’s friend or cutie are good titles to have, but feel free to get more personal. My name’s Desdemona, but you can call me Des.” A quiet chuckle escaped from her patient smile as she reached up to place the tip of her index finger on Herald’s lips.
“Shhh,” she cooed pleasantly, “..let’s forget about all that craziness in your paper for now, and stop beating yourself up over it. Good help is hard to find. So do us both a favor and keep me in mind next time you need someone to sink their teeth into a story? As for tonight...”
The disguised digimon then pulled her hand back to her side, resting it upon her own hip. She glanced at the bags hanging from Herald’s arms. Groceries? Supplies? Not quite the accessories to be taking for a night out. Meeting Herald’s eyes again Des smirked slyly.
“You mentioned you could use a companion, but it looks like you’re already going home? Why don’t we stop at your brother’s bar for a while? The night’s too young to cut it short.”

Maybe herald meant it in a more aggravated way towards her own people or perhaps it was just a way to ‘pose’. Either way she didn’t follow up and didn’t seem to hold any hostility towards Desdemona. She’d flick her ears and watch the other; the strange choice of holosuit was one that made her curious. What sort of mon was she?
”Really now? That’s a surprise to hear. Most usually steer clear of me when they see me. Hearing that from you… heh.”
Herald chuckled a bit and was going to say something but… The other reached up to place a finger against her lips. The goat demon grinning a bit. Herald’s friend and cutie were good titles huh? The other was sure about the goat getting more personal. She’d reach down to gently trail a finger down their cheek and inspect their face while holding that delightful chin between a thumb and finger.
”A pleasure to meet you Des. There’s many things you can call me, but Herald will do just fine. Yes. The paper is definitely something to be thought about another time. Mmm. I’ll keep you in mind. Do you stay around here or perhaps somewhere else I may find you?”
The goat looked down at her bags and flicked an ear. Yes she was going to be going home but… The goat laughed a bit and wagged her finger at the disguised digimon.
”It’s one and the same place actually. We have our own properties elsewhere sure but they aren’t for us. More for renters or workers we have. But yes. The bar sounds like a wonderful place to go.”
She’d chuckle softly and offer to lead the other on. If they took her offer well… It wouldn’t take all too long to get to the rather well kept bar in this part of town. It was crisp and clean on the outside and once inside? It was very relaxed. Several booths lined the wall, a few supports out in the open. A veemon without one of her arms was quietly cleaning some of the tables… But the brother seemed to be absent.
”Ah. Is skald not in right now?”
”Nah… He’s out and about kinda. Dealin with some things. Be back in uh… Eh?”
The veemon shook her head and made a sort of so-so gesture before getting back to the cleaning. Herald sighed and gave a shake of her head before setting down the groceries on the nearby table.
”Well where do you want to sit? Bar or table?”

When Herald held her chin Des didn’t protest. It was always nice to be properly appreciated, especially while her real body was currently a flying jelly bean. She wondered if knowing that would change Herald’s opinion of her, but she decided against finding out. Perhaps after she reached champion she would be more open.
“I live in Terminus City, for now. Home is where the heart is, and I have a very fickle heart myself,” answered Des with a soft chuckle. “...but, I can stick around if my company’s wanted?” Judging from the way Herald had asked how might she find Des the tsukaimon figured that was the right answer.
Curiously, Herald then pointed out her own living situation. It sounded rather excessive to have several properties, but Desdemona couldn’t deny that she was liking what she was hearing. The information certainly painted the goat as a successful businesswoman at least. The human facade smiled when told that the bar would be their next stop for the night.
“Sounds like fun!” With that settled on Des walked side by side with Herald to her brother’s bar. Once they arrived there she couldn’t help but give the exterior a casual once over. Presentation was important for such an establishment, and Desdemona found herself glad that things looked organized and clean. Inside offered much of the same vibe; an atmosphere of relaxation for the professionals of society. As much as she was intrigued by the veemon missing a limb she would save that question for a later time. She did allow an amused chuckle to escape from her smile as the blue digimon casually waved off Skald’s apparent disappearance, though.
“Let’s grab a front row seat,” replied Des to Herald as she started walking over to the bar and took a seat. She wondered if the veemon would serve them, and a part of her wanted to order a drink that had to be shaken if that was the case. Well, she wanted to do a lot of things in life, but patience and grace came before greed.
“Is Skald your brother, Herald?” she inquired while spinning around on her barstool to lean back against the counter on her elbows. “A shame I’m not able to meet him, but I did come here for you. You strike me as a person that gets things done. So what got you into the journalism business? Your eyes are too sharp to be satisfied with newsprint, if you ask me.”

The goat demon took a good moment to inspect the other, her eyes, her expression. Every little movement and twitch. She was curious about this one; the mask that they chose was something that she didn’t really understand. Youth had it’s perks but… looking like an adult to the humans was also something that came with a certain medium of trust.
”Ah. A drifter then? Can’t really blame you. Heh. Well lets see where your luck and heart is at my Dear Desdemona~”
The demonic goat gave a small smile to the other and well. Her own living situation wasn’t terribly surprising. Stick around long enough in terminus and you understood the ebb and flow of things. Skald knew it, she knew it. She knew that if Des stuck around that they’d get it too. There was a low chuckle and the goat gestured forward.
”It can be; some days more than others. A little drole for my tastes but who am I to talk?”
The heramon took a seat next to the disguised mon; gesturing for a drink that the veemon already knew she’d want. Some whiskey on the rocks; she didn’t much care what whiskey given that they were all good [at least in her opinion!]. The heramon leaned back, taking the glass between two of her large fingers.
”Ah, in a manner of speaking he is. We’re related through blood but not by birth. Ah! He’ll likely be around in a bit darling, isn’t that right Gertrude? ”
”Give or take an hour. Plenty of time for you and your guest to get acquainted with the bottom of a glass.”
The heramon let out a sharp laugh and then leaned on the counter, grinning down at the other. She was the one that did the more physical portion of the work around here, at least with the meeting. Greeting, recruiting… most of the interactions that didn’t fall into whatever bell was.
”Well see the newspapers in the human world have these adorable little comics, funnies is what they’re called. All the newspapers around here didn’t have them, in fact none in the digital world did past one or two unsuccessful. So I thought to myself, well what better way to make money than to tickle someone’s funny bone!”
A small chuckle followed and she’d take a sip of her drink, her eyes sparkling a little bit. She’d lean forward to gently grip at that chin again; inspecting the other once more. Whatever she found she liked, letting out a low rumble and leaning away from the other to take a longer sip.
”Sharp eyes, sharp teeth. A good sense of what’s what if I do say so. I do get things done, more than my brother does at least. Not in the sense of generality mind you, but as in terms of physical nature. I ‘the brawn with the brains’, he the ‘brains with the schemes’. Out of the two of us I’d say he’s far more dangerous.”
”He’s also the one with a knack for finances else you’d still be living with vivian.”
”I’ll admit I’m not terribly good with money. Tis why I let him handle things in that scope…”
A short laugh once again and the heramon leaned to look her companion over. She had a few questions but one of her firsts was... Well something simple really! She knew the game, she knew the business. The other wouldn't of approached her if she didn't ultimately have a goal for it!
"What of you? What sort of sharpness do you employ my dear?"

Ah, so Herald explained that she and Skald were siblings, but not twins. That made her wonder what kind of digimon he was, but if Gertrude’s estimation was right she wouldn’t have to wait too long to see for herself. With how things were currently going it didn’t look like passing the time with the crimson goat would be a chore, though. After Herald answered her question about how she got into the newspaper gig Des’ smile cracked wider as she laughed softly. It wasn’t a mocking sound at all, but rather born from genuine surprise.
“That’s cute,” admitted Des, “...I did see that when I was reading one of your papers before. This city could use more cheering up.”
Still leaning back against the counter on her elbows Des allowed Herald to cup her chin again. She even smiled for her host, unbothered by this sudden curiosity. Herald then leaned back into her seat with a satisfied rumble. Des then straightened up herself to spin around on her stool to properly face the counter. The horned digimon went on to talk again, speaking about her observations of Des, and going on a little about her brother as well. The tsukaimon paid close attention to the details. Especially the bit about who Herald thought was the bigger threat. That, was a curious thing to admit, thought Des.
The focus was quick to turn back on Des to which she smiled happily, always in the mood to talk about herself. Or more specifically, elaborate on her strengths and why she might be a useful companion to keep around.
“Well, you’ve already said a few yourself. Sharp eyes for seeing the world as it truly is. Sharp teeth for biting any hand that thinks it can control me. Knowing what’s what may be important, but… knowing what’s not, is even more so.” She paused for a few seconds to stare down at her hands, holding their palms up as she flexed fingers into and out of fists. Her expression seemed dissatisfied with the display. “What’s there, and what isn’t there. It’s an unfortunate duality, two sides of the same coin.” She chuckled and shrugged her shoulders, dissipating her brief displeasure as she turned another smile towards Herald.
“And once you know those details about a coin… you know what it’s worth, and what you can do with it. Who might want it, and who might not know enough about it. Where to take it even, for either monetary profit, or to conveniently put someone in trouble for being found with it. My sharpness is a subtle one, yes. However, I’m not afraid of legwork; it gives the stepping stones beneath something to admire during my ascension.”
She allowed the weight of her words to hang in the air for a moment, holding her smile. Then she glanced towards Gertrude.
“Hun, could I get a glass of brandy? I trust your recommendation.”

”A lot of people are stuck in the sadness and looking to the world in such a negative way. They don’t see the end to the suffering. All these people doing all these terrible things and some days it’s hard for them to even smile. Least I can do for the people around here no?”
The goat mused and leaned so that her arms were draped over the bar counter. Gertrude snorted at what herald said and simply shook her head. Herald did want to help people; at least in the long run. Even if they had to suffer for it in the mean time; she couldn’t help everyone and would reach out to those she thought could help. While skald worried about the masses in terminus and what their plans would cause among them.
Herald quietly watched the other, sipping at her whiskey here or there as the other spoke. Sharp eyes, sharp teeth, knowing what was what… The heramon’s eyes sparkled quietly while they took in this information. Was this other disguised mon telling her what she wanted to hear? Or exactly what the other meant? She’d shoot a glance at Gertrude; the latter took things as they came and often came to their own opinion before anyone else.
They didn’t seem too impressed; which meant that they definitely knew without a doubt that the other was telling the truth. That every word was seeped in such a way to give information but give a vague enough feel… The heramon’s grin split her face and she’d let out a small chuckle.
”On the house Herald?”
”Business and pleasure Gertrude. Business and pleasure.”
”Hmm. Bosses’ favorite then. Some human brandy, 1947. Cost an arm and a leg. Not this one mind you.”
A bit of dark humour from the veemon as she poured out a little of the said brandy. The heramon swished her whiske, the gentle clinking of the ice against her glass being the only sound from her fro a few moments. What it was worth huh? She’d stare at the other for a few moments. Stepping stones, legwork… Ascension. She knew the game, was willing to play. So the goat had already set out the line, they had taken it. The other had looked her dead in the eye and told her what she was. What she wanted.
”There’s a lot of stones till the end game. A lot of work that needs to be done. You’d be workin with me and my brother for a long time. Lord knows how long it’d take for what needs to be done. Gertrude?”
”A roof over your head. Three square meals. But mums the word on the work when around others. Keep Barbus in the dark, you’ll know him when you see him. Big. Stupid. Lovely guy. You’ll be workin with me at first; then herald. Then skald. But the boss man will be here in..”
The veemon slid the drink to the other and looked up at the clock. She had said an hour or so. But judging by her expression she expected sooner. She’d count on her fingers and then bite her lip.
”If it’s goin good… five or so minutes. If it’s bad? Twenty.”
”after you meet him I can show you to where you’ll be staying. Don’t worry it’s not that far from where I am...”
The heramon gave the other a small wink and took another sip of her whiskey. She’d hold out the glass to gertrude who without even looking at the other filled it up. They allowed a certain amount of leeway on all of these things. Their own glasses and their own stock. Always free and never really having to worry about the charge.
”Trust me on this one. I do more work from this bar and get more done than the other knuckleheads we’ve got.”
”Gertrude’s been with us the longest so she knows the most. Says a lot about her don’t you think? We reward loyalty Desdemona and we have very long memories.”
Was that some kind of threat? Or a promise to the future if they stuck with them?

Business and pleasure. Des liked that. There was no reason either of them had to be mutually exclusive to the other. An expensive drink on the house was a good sign as well, so the tsukaimon simply ignored Gertrude’s light ribbing. If she was to be Herald’s new favorite she could get used to the perks.
“It may have cost you an arm and a leg, but that’s a small price to pay for the devotion of a girl’s heart. Thank you all the same, Gertrude.” Desdemona smiled at the veemon. While she did feel a little spoiled right now she didn’t not enjoy the attention she was being given, either. Her gaze drifted between Herald and Gertrude as they explained a little regarding their work.
As expected, there really was something going on here beneath the proper businesses front. A newspaper. A bar. There were probably more pieces in play than that too, she was sure. They would need people to work their establishments like Gertrude, and Barbus. More even, to spread their influence. The tsukaimon may not have understood what their goal was yet, but she respected their preparedness. She picked up the drink to admire its color. It would be a real treat if the bar had any sealed bottles in their storage.
“Rest assured Herald, even if we’re a small walk away... I’ll always come running. Everyone loves a little chase,” replied Des smoothly as she winked back to the taller mon. She sipped at her drink then, involuntarily releasing a pleased hum at the taste flowing over her tongue. Gold eyes then zeroed in on Gertrude as she put her glass down. “Losing an arm is no easy loss. The bosses are doing something right to still have her around, I’m sure.” Her gaze slid over to Herald next as she softly tapped a finger against the side of her glass with a smirk.
“I had a very terrible feeling when I first saw you, in all the best of ways. You did not disappoint, Herald. There’s something big going on behind the scenes here. Something clandestine and sinister.” Her smirk widened into a grin revealing more of her sharpened teeth.
“It feels like it’s been a lifetime since the last time I was this excited. And I’m glad that we have an understanding on loyalty, because as the humans say: ’hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.’”

Heralds grin split her face and gertrude snorted a bit at what Desdemona had to say about the arm and leg. She’d dip her head in a nod and go back to cleaning. She was amused to say the least and with the way that desdemona seemed to disarm her well… That probably meant a good thing. Hopefully.
”Of course. Just lemme know if you want some more.”
That being said she went about her own work; leaving the two mostly in peace. Every so often she’d come back with glasses or in one case she had to tell a potential customer to bugger off since he was already too drunk for her to sell him any drinks.
”Someone I can rely on huh? I like that in a mon.”
The Heramon gave the other a wink in return and listened to what the other had to say. She had the right of it; they treated their workers and underlings with the utmost respect. They were something that they needed ontop of it all; so why would they be mean to their own?
”They are. They’ve been taking care of me as long as I can remember, even before this.”
She’d roll her shoulder and kept on working; a small grin on her face as herald was now the proper target of her interest. The veemon scooting out of the room to go take care of stuff upstairs. Herald sighed a little bit and smile slowly; she’d lean down to cup the chin of the disguised mon.
”You want to know more? Much much more? It’d require us to retire to my office or home so I could explain more. Skald usually prefers to meet the new hires but something tells me that you’re going to be working for me anyways.”
That grin widened a bit and she’d flick an ear. Loyalty. It was something in short supply; something that they didn’t demand of everyone but… Desdemona had it right and the heramon rumbled out a soft laugh.
”Though we are private enough here… maybe if we retired to one of the above rooms? They are soundproof after all.”
The privacy of their varied customers and hearing that last bit the heramon’s smile split her face ear to ear.
”Mmm. I knew I liked the look of you my dear.”
The heramon smiled warmly and after a moment she'd lean down. If the other didn't move from it they'd find themselves drawn into a long but gentle kiss. She'd let the other's chin go and after maybe a minute she'd pull away with a small huff.
"But first... business. Follow me my dear."
The heramon dragged one of her large fingers under the chin of the other to direct their attention upstairs... Before trotting off; a finger gesturing for them to come with them. They would have a talk in the privacy of one of the soundproof rooms.

The veemon’s offer for refills was answered with a grateful smile and nod on Des’ part. Maybe if she could get on everyone’s good side she could live very comfortably working for these people. It certainly sounded like Herald was already getting cozy with the idea of having her around, too. Gertrude’s confession of having been looked after by the bosses since before whatever involvement tied her here was promising to hear as well. The tsukaimon would inevitably want her own firsthand proof, however; loyalty by agreement was one thing, but loyalty by conviction was another thing entirely.
Her golden eyes lingered on Gertrude until her host cupped her chin once more. Ever analyzing optics shifted to meet the crimson motes of Herald’s own eyes as Desdemona listened patiently. Her sharp toothed smile returned to greet the other digimon’s grin.
“Some clandestine words behind guarded walls… Scandalous,” she breathed the last word with a husky tone in her amusement. “You keep teasing me like this Herald, and my nibbles of interest are going to start becoming insatiable bites.”
The larger digimon leaned down for a kiss then, surprising Des slightly with the degree of boldness. She did not reject the gesture, though. She even leaned into it a little to reward the brazen act as she returned the affection.
Once they were separated her sly smile reappeared. In the very least Herald was proving that employment here wouldn’t be boring.
“Tease,” joked Des with a soft chuckle before her attention was directed upwards. It seemed that now would be the time to get serious. As Herald moved away from the bar she too slid off of her seat to follow. A friendly wave was given to Gertrude as they passed the veemon. “Be seeing you around, friend.”
Her footsteps were light compared to the firm clops of Herald's hooves on the stairs. Des' gaze kept forward to the next floor, wary of any surprises in good nature or otherwise.
