Leaves crunched under Ryuji's feet as he walked through the woods of a forest he found himself in. Just an hour ago he was near the Shibuya River until he slipped and fell in. Normally he wasn't so clumsy and now he was confused as to why he was walking in such an unfamiliar environment. Granted when he swam to the surface of the river, he found that he came up in a small freshwater pond. After trying to go back the way he came and being unsuccessful, he started wandering. Surely he would find some way home whether on his own or someone who knew the way.
Not far away, a small white digimon carrying a machine about as big as himself was floating through the Server Woods. He had picked up pace since he felt that the one he was looking for was near and he was in potential danger considering these woods were alive with various digimon, not all of them friendly. All he knew was the one he was looking for was a human named Ryuji and that he was meant to partner with him. This was knowledge he was born with so he never questioned it.
Wiggling his large ears, he heard the one he was looking for but he also heard something else. It was the beating wings of a Kuwagamon creating a faint buzz most humans wouldn't hear. Knowing he and, the soon to arrive, Ryuji were no match for such a digimon he dove into a bush waiting for his soon to be tamer.
Ryuji, who was unaware of the danger to come, came along at that time. As he passed the bush the little digimon was taking shelter in he heard a faint voice call to him. "Quick, Ryuji! There is danger nearby. Hop into the bushes. Hurry!"
Hearing the unknown faint voice, he turned toward the bushes and climbed inside just as a buzzing sound was audible to his ears. He didn't know why but something told him the strange voice was safe. Looking around inside the bushes he spotted a small white creature with large ears and green eyes staring at him.
"What are you?" Ryuji exclaimed before the tiny creature floated over to him placing tiny paws on his mouth.
"Shh. Not so loud. There is a large hungry bug flying outside the safety of these bushes. Neither one of us are strong enough to defeat it. I promise I will explain everything when the danger has passed." the little digimon said as he moved slowly backward giving Ryuji his personal space and sat on the ground.
Silently the duo listened as the buzzing wings of the Kuwagamon made several laps before gradually fading into the distance. Judging by how loud the buzz was the creature must have been enormous. Wherever he was, Ryuji knew that no place on Earth had bugs nearly that big. Where was he?
Looking back at the little creature he said "Alright the bug seems to be gone. Now where is this? What are you and how do you know my name?"
Hearing no trace of Kuwagamon himself he turned to Ryuji and said "Those are fair questions and I did promise answers. First off this is the Digital World. It is a realm that is seemingly connected to your Human World. Most of the residents are referred to as Digital Monsters or Digimon for short. There are many different kinds. I, for example, am a species known as Calumon. The giant bug is a red digimon known as Kuwagamon. As for how I know your name, I'm not sure. I was just born with the knowledge."
'Born with the knowledge?' Ryuji thought as he processed this information from the tiny being known as Calumon. "What about your name and what is with that machine near you?"
"My name is the same as my species. As for this machine, it is a type of digivice known as a D3 and it is meant to be yours, Ryuji."
"Mine? Why? What's it for? Why is your name the same as your species? I don't understand." Ryuji was rightly confused. After all, things like this didn't happen to everyone.
Of course Ryuji wouldn't get what a tamer is nor why digimon kept their species name as an identity so he calmly took a deep breath and said "It's because you are quite special, Ryuji. Not all humans get to come here but the ones that do often form bonds in various ways with digimon. The D3, for example is the digivice of a tamer. Tamers form a partnership with a digimon, or two if they are twins, to work together in a mutually beneficial relationship. The tamer guides their partner as in battle and the digimon protects the tamer from danger. As for why digimon typically are named like their species, I don't know. I never thought about it but I've heard of some digimon adopting human names though."
"There are other types of digivices? Are you meant to be my partner or something Calumon?" Ryuji asked as he grabbed the D3 for a better look noticing a mark on it identical to the symbol on Calumon's forehead.
"Yes there are but we can go over those later. As for your other question, yes you're meant to be my tamer. I promise to do my best not to let you down." Calumon said as a smile lit upon his face.
Taking in that information Ryuji said "Maybe since it's safe we should make our way out of this bush and find a place to camp for the night."
"I know a good place not far from here. There is a clearing that has a source of food and water nearby. Follow me, Ryuji!" Calumon floated out of the bush with his new tamer close behind. After a short time the duo arrived at the clearing and Ryuji began gathering firewood while Calumon looked for food bringing meat apples one by one from a nearby tree. As he gathered them in a pile, he explained to Ryuji what they were and that they needed to be cooked. All the while Ryuji started a campfire while listening to Calumon talk.
Soon a roaring fire was started with meat apples cooking when Ryuji noticed Calumon approach him and touched his necklace. "What's this?" the inquisitive little digimon said as he ran his paw along the surface.
"Oh that? It's a necklace I've had for a while. Do you like it?" Ryuji asked as Calumon examined it.
"I love it! I wish I had one. Wait a minute..." Calumon said as he focused his energy causing him and the necklace to glow briefly before he had a matching necklace around his neck.
"What was that about? How?" Ryuji asked slightly freaked out.
"Sorry, Ryuji. I forgot you don't know a lot about digimon. You see sometimes digimon copy data of other things and incorporate them in their bodies. So in essence this necklace is now part of me."
"So digimon can copy things and incorporate them into themselves. As in all digimon?"
"Pretty much all digimon. Usually to increase strength not for an accessory but who knows? Maybe this necklace becomes a weapon as I become stronger."
"Stronger?"
"Yeah. It happens through a process called digivolution where weaker digimon, like me, become stronger through changing into a mightier form."
"How interesting. Hey Calumon."
"Yes, Ryuji."
"You mentioned that sometimes digimon use human names. How about I call you Yoshihiro. It means 'Widespread Goodness'."
"I like it."
"Then Yoshihiro it is."
The two of them began eating the meat apples not knowing what they would encounter.
