It had been a few years since Zachary had returned to the Digital World. The events of ODIN, D-Reaper, Demon Lords and all kinds of troubles had taken its toll. Nexus was still around but Zachary had stepped down from being active as he had a new challenge to tackle.
College.
He had graduated high school with high grades and even landed a scholarship at one of the major schools. However... it meant leaving Shibuya behind. Which was the only true gate now to the Digital World. He hated how that was the case. It was rare for portals to the Digital World to open outside of that area, even with the link to Nexus.
He felt guilty about leaving it, but his friends had all grown to defend it in his absence. Especially Pickle. Her enthusiasm was just the energy Nexus needed to survive after all the drama and tragedy they endured. Some that even almost risked all of Nexus and the digital world around it.
As he left the thrills and dramas of high school behind him, he now dedicated to his studies. He was taking both computer science to learn more about programming but also wanted to learn writing so he could also work on the side in a more creative capacity. Though as he worked, he felt the digital world was just a breath away. He lost count the number of times he tried to open a Digi-Gate with his D-sync and nothing happened. TO him it was starting to feel like a fading memory. A fantasy to help him survive the isolation and hardships he endured in high school with bullies, no parents as they traveled and other dramas of being alone.
He didn't want to accept his adventures in the Digital World were good and gone. Perhaps it was why he went into computer science. To learn more about that world and even how to open more gates outside of just Shibuya. And why Shibuya? There were too many mysteries to just put it down and accept what was left when one grew up. He wouldn't allow that.
It still came back to the thing he left behind. Panthermon. WHen he said he would be leaving Shibuya to go to college, he intended to have Panthermon come with him. But after the final battle and in a show of true independence-- the panther digimon born from his own mind made a very mature and independent decision. He wanted to stay in the Digital World. He became a true guardian to it and wanted to stay to keep an eye on things. He knew it meant saying goodby to Zachary. While they spent a few days with each other afterward, Zachary knew he had to say goodbye. He needed to go grow, just like Panthermon wanted to as well.
To leave Panthermon was to leave a part of himself behind. Literally, as he was born from Zachary's imagination. However, after all their adventures and excitement, the one thing Zachary worried about the most was that he created something he wasn't taking responsibility for-- but he did. And now, his partner had matured and grown, which was hard to imagine since he was very mature for a rookie anyway.
He would send messages on the Nexus site when he had time, between projects and study breaks, to check in on his friends, what was going on in NEXUS. Even after all his time there, he even wanted to write a book about his adventures, though under the guise of science fiction. More so, it was for him to keep in touch. And luckily, Panthermon, despite being a digimon with no thumbs (lol) was one who could send messages over the net. They became like pen pals, and kept in touch frequently. But only so much could be shared through email and texts.
He was starting to feel sad and missed them, to the point his work would begin to dwindle as he missed it. He would look out to the sky, seeing the clouds pass by and think in nostalgia when he used to hang out above them in Empyrean Skies.
It was after his mid-terms, he decided he had to pay the Digital world a visit. He had to see Panthermon again.
He took the train back through the Kyoto region and back to Tykyo. It took him a while to get back to Shibuya, but luckily, his train went right to the Shibuya central station. It was just as chaotic and loud as ever-- but from there he could access a Digital Gate. He could take the trailmon in the secret basement station, but no trailmon traveled to Nexus as it was too far high.
Luckily, there was a local internet cafe, he found easy access to. When no one was looking, he used a public pc and opened up the Nexus webpage. With hope, he held out his Digivice Syncro to the screen...
... and it lit up like he expected. Connected once again, he felt himself be pulled forward and fell through the Digital Gate-- the screen closing up after his use. He sped through the network for a bit, curving and spinning through the maze of wires and bandwiths. However at the end, light broke his view-- and he landed on his feet before a place he knew.
He stood at the edge of Nexus, looking out at the aerial view of the Digifarm. He saw many in-training Digimon frolic and play among the fields and lakes, enjoying themselves. He could see the towers of Nexus in the distance too. It sure had expanded as it was not just one large flying island, but some with smaller islands dotting the outline of it.
"Zachary?" a voice growled from behind him, out of curiosity rather than a, well, a growl.
His eyes widened and he slowly turned around. He soon looked to find a black man-jaguar digimon in tribal shaman clothing-- regal and sleak. He knew him as Jaguamon, an ultimate, and Zachary smiled as he recognized him immediately who he was.
Tears came to his eyes as he saw his old friend, now grown on his own. "Hi... Panthermon," he replied, his voice betraying his sobbing joy.
A calm smile showed on the feline's face. "Welcome back, partner..."
The End.
