She had thought about it long and hard.
After her ma passed it was a blow to her; after she saw her friends fight time and time again. Get hurt time and time again this stirred something in holly. Something deep. She wanted to do more than just stand behind or besides someone. She wanted to fight; she wanted to make sure that those she deeply cared about wouldn’t have to worry. Wouldn’t have to explain to her what happened.
She would stop them from getting hurt on her own and if that didn’t suffice she’d go even further beyond that. Like many people of this family they all had portals to this place. It wasn’t a surprise to see her again. But maybe what was a surprise was the look in her eyes. The sharpness that often was kept for other things.
There was a low rumbling growl in her throat and the cat set off to find the one she knew she needed to talk to. Thanking garlond as he greeted her but ultimately she followed her nose. Followed her senses. That led to that room; the one that iko and luke spent the most time in. She’d check her watch and blink.
It would be early morning for many here still but holly was always a light sleeper. Always on the move and always thinking. Letting out a little tch she’d knock firmly on that door; her voice wasn’t meek. It was forward and honestly a little louder than she probably intended.
”Iko! Luke. Are you in there?”
She knew her ma fought Mr. Iko time and time again; sparring with him all the time. She knew that silence did the same thing now. So no doubt he’d be sore or wouldn’t be looking for something like this. She felt that rumble roll through her chest and she almost had half a mind to follow in the same sort of forwardness that silence had but instead she’d nervously fidget.
Her champion form was already something to behold for most, a meicrackmon of the usual color set. But she had thought about coming here not like one normally would expect to see her. But the black furred mon that her ma had been for quite some time. THough she lacked the cape and lacked the general strangeness of the form holly… Well. Holly knew for a fact this would say something else was up. Just in case she didn’t make it clear before… she’d speak again!
”We need to talk.”

Was it really a surprise?
This wasn't the first time that Holly had brought this up before. Back in the office, as Luke worked through the budget for the month, Iko found himself sitting at 'his' desk, looking over the letter that the MeiCrackmon had sent to him. A very well-drafted, direct letter about her intent to join the Knights, and that she would be here 'shortly' to go through the process. "Hmph..."
"Hm?" Luke's attention perked up for the moment, the tamer shaking his head. "Seriously, you still looking at that?"
"Its like her whole family's gonna end up around here." He gave a sigh, and as if on-cue, he'd hear a knock at the door. "Yeah, c'mon in, Holly. Take a seat."
It wouldn't take long for Iko to get down to business, here. As Holly would take a seat on the other side of the desk, he'd put down that open letter between the two of them, and give the MeiCrackmon a small nod. "Apparently we do. Though I think this is the first time we've met in person..." He folded his hands. "But what's an aspiring research doctor like yourself doing here?"

Holly’s ears flicked forward and she’d quickly enter; it seemed to be much more like an office than a room. Maybe she had them mixed up? Regardless she’d take a seat and fold her arms as though in intense thought. The entire family ending up in the knights? Siris had joined before. Syre had joined before. Mikemon was considering it and Silence had re-entered the fold. Her thoughts danced to the two unborn twins and she’d let out a small huff.
Yeah that seemed about right actually. Everyone fighting against the world’s terrors and mishaps. A family of different sorts all wanting the same thing. To protect one another, their friends and even those that they didn’t know. She’d grit her teeth a bit and flick her ears a few times. This was the first time they properly met and seeing the letter in front of her the meicrackmon almost wanted to reach out to look it over again.
”It is. All the other stuff I’ve heard second hand from syre or my ma. Or even my da on rare occasions.”
The meicrackmon’s tail shifted and coiled around the edge of her seat, laying it’s ‘stinger’ in her lap much like the head of a dog or something like that. She seemed thoughtful and the meicrackmon sighed.
”I’m here to do the same thing that other members of my family have. To join the knights. If that wasn’t obvious. Unless you want to hear my entire spiel about this.”
Holly’s eyes locked onto iko; there was something else in them. Something that wasn’t there normally. A powerful sense of determination; something not unlike her mother’s. She’d grit her teeth a bit and shift, her hands coming onto the desk.
”I’ve had to sit and watch others fight my battles for me, always watching. Always having to just hear about the fights they’ve done. The people they’ve saved. My ma fought against the wisemon when I was barely even a kitten. She fought against all these other people and somehow I was always looking on from behind her. I fought against a demonlord and some under-powered sovereign. I’ve done mysteries and other stuff too. Doctor or no I don’t want to just save people that way. I want to save people by being in the front of it all. What good is taking care of people after the worst when you have the ability to stop that from happening in the first place?”
She’d drum her fingers on the desk and huff a bit. She seemed irritated that he’d ask her that and she’d wag a finger at him.
”I don’t intend on stopping my research or stopping my climb to be a doctor either. But I most certainly will be directing it a way that’s beneficial for the group here. Who do you have that can treat people when they’re hurt? Or do research about enemies that are both unknown and known?”

So, it was all on the table.
Holly wanted to join the Knights - and on paper, she had every qualification to do so. Holly had managed to survive a fight with a Demon Lord and even bring a weakened Sovereign down to their knees. The wolf knew that any sort of test or spar would have just been a technicality, but honestly, there was still something he didn't like about this.
No, this whole thing seemed impulsive, or at the very least, not fully thought out. He folded his hands, resting his chin atop his bridged fingers, looking the MeiCrackmon eye to eye.
"What you're asking is to be the best of both worlds. A hard-fighting defender, as well as a doctor who wants to solve deep medical mysteries."
He made that point clear - just to see if he got it right. And presuming if that was the case - if Holly wanted to to both - the wolf would give a sigh, and shake his head. "Holly, I'm not going to tell you what you should be doing, but you have a talent and aptitude that's quite rare in the Digital World. K always liked to brag about her budding doctor, and from what I've seen, there's hardly a limit to the good you can do there. But you've come here - to a place where combat is inevitable."
The Ankomon gave a 'tsk'.
"You're young. But, every fight that you get into steals a little 'piece' of you, Holly. Maybe your hands don't close the way they used to. Maybe your knuckles start to crack, when they didn't before... or maybe you take a few too many shots to the head, and can't think as good as you used to."
His eyes narrowed, at that last point.
"Knowing that, for what good reason do you put your entire career, your livelihood, your worth at risk?"

Holly knew that it wouldn’t be easy. She knew that it wouldn’t be something that most could do. She knew that she had every qualification. Her eyes didn’t waiver and the meicrackmon flicked her ears and then nodded her head at what the wolf seemed to make of all this.
”That is correct.”
She’d cock her head a bit and raised her brows as the wolf told her what her ma had done. She had bragged about holly? The meicrackmon slowly blinked a bit and she’d let out a small tsk. She knew that. She knew what her ma thought of her and the meicrackmon huffed a bit. She knew that her ma also didn’t want her to fight. She knew that her ma wanted to do the fighting for her. So that she didn’t have to. But that wasn’t the case anymore; her ma was gone and she had to defend herself. She could do that and defend others too.
”I can still do plenty of good as a doctor. Even while in the knights. And… I’m honestly surprised to hear that my ma bragged. She didn’t seem the type to do so. And yes. But the thing is that so far my life has been full of the darned stuff. I can hardly get away from it. From the group of assassins I worked with to the various threats I felt I needed to address… what better place to go and learn than one that my mother set up?”
It was a good point and she’d fold her arms. Maybe her hands didn’t close, maybe her knuckles crack… Or she’d take too many shots to the head. She wouldn’t be able to be a doctor if that last one happened. She’d close her eyes and exhale slowly. If that happened her career would flatly be over. Maybe even her life as they all knew it. Maybe holly would stop being holly all together.
Then came that last question. Her worth. Her livelihood. Her career.
What good reason did she have? She’d exhale a bit and run her hands softly along the top of the table and shake her head. She didn’t see a need to keep up her ultimate form. It was a brief and minute change. Her fur losing that blackened tint and her fluff shifting out a bit. She looked far friendly and those harrowed eyes shifted to those closed ones. A deep rumbling sigh rolled out of her and she couldn’t help but shake her head.
”Maybe those hands that didn’t close the way they used to stopped a madman from killing a town. Maybe my knuckles started to crack when I came to blows to some crazed super mega. Maybe I took too many shots to the head, but I bought enough time for people to get to safety. Maybe I couldn’t think as good as I used to but I’d be able to live with myself knowing I made a difference.”
She’d lean a bit and gesture to the door.
”Maybe I can do it all on my own, maybe I can try to save people my own way without the help of some group that I held so much trust in. I put my career, my livelihood and my worth. Whatever it is at risk because it’s the right thing to do. The hardest things in life don’t come easy and neither do the risks. I put it at risk because my worth isn’t the same as hundreds or thousands of people that I could save from my actions.”
She’d look down at her hands and gritted her teeth, clenching those same hands after a moment.
”And maybe I’m tired of seeing good people leave me. Maybe I’m tired of not being able to help them when they need it most. Maybe. Just maybe if I had been there it would have been different. But I would never know and never will know if that is the case. And maybe this time I don’t want to lose a friend when I could be there for them. Or a family member.”
She’d growl low and flick her ears, those slits opening ever so slightly. The barest hint of power sparking in them.
”And maybe I just want a future where I know my little sisters or brothers can smile and play Like I could. That they could grow up in a world without her and be okay because their big sis is there for them just like she was there for everyone else. Little amber. Little coal. Little duke. Whoever comes out of those eggs I want to be there for. Even if they aren't fully my siblings but that doesn't matter. I want them to be just as free as I was.”

"Of course she was proud. Her children were her world, Holly - I imagine it would be the same for a lot of parents."
K's pride was aside from the point, here. Right now, Iko had a concern, not only with Holly joining the Knights, but her desperation to try and do something in the world. Right under the surface of those confident words was one of impatience, and perhaps worse, confidence. The wolf folded his hands, and listened fully to the words that she had to say.
Yes - those who fought, did so for the right reason. That wasn't news to Iko, and if Holly had nothing else to bring to the table, perhaps that resolve would have been enough. But the MeiCrackmon didn't only have the ability to fight. Whereas Syre found her niche with battle, it was without a doubt that Holly had found her niche elsewhere, if she had even found it at all. Even with that, and even hearing about those eggs, of all things, the wolf wasn't entirely convinced.
"... Even without this, nothing is stopping you from helping those who need it. Even if not on the battlefield, you can be there for a sick or injured Digimon, when no-one else can - and better yet, you can help teach others, or expand our knowledge of the world, to save others. Your work might make the world a different place - but you won't know what you could have done if you devote your life to this."
His tone remained steady throughout that, a sheer tone of doubt given to Holly's reasoning. "We won't deny you joining as a doctor or a medic. But if you think you can spread yourself that thin - or if your worth is more as a fighter than as a researcher - then I'm going to object."

”Maybe I’ll understand it one day…”
Holly mumbled a bit and shook her head. She didn’t get it; she really didn’t. K bragged about her? About her kids? She didn’t seem the sort and that on it’s own made the meicrackmon… uneasy for some reason. Holly wanted to do something in the world, something right and she wanted to help them all.
”I can’t just stand by and watch people get hurt. I can’t I can’t do that sort of thing and I’m only one mon. I can still do all of that even while in the knights. I can expand and teach and… tch.”
Holly looked down at her hands and flicked her ears. Why was it that every time she tried to make a choice that people resisted her wants and efforts? It was frustrating and she’d grit her teeth a little bit. So they’d be okay with her being a doctor or medic. That they could make use of her as a researcher she simply had one thing to say to this.
”Fine but I will say this. If my patients are threatened you can believe that I’ll fight for them. Not that I’m going to try to seek things out just for that. That’d be irresponsible for me to do.”
Holly huffed a bit and folded her arms unsure of what to say next. Though she’d flick her ears a few times and sighed. Looking back up at the wolf with a small grimace.
”You all will still teach me how to fight right? You’re not going to let me just be some… defenseless doctor? Assassin training or not there’s just some things you can’t rely on.”
She knew that her training was only good for one on one encounters. The sort of encounters she had a nasty habit of running into but… Life was unforgiving to those that weren’t unprepared.

Iko sighed.
He heard it. He heard the desperation in her voice - and though Holly might understand what the wolf was saying, the cat was simply refusing to accept it. Surely, if she did everything right, she could do both! She could be a doctor and a fighter, and save as many people as possible! That was her tone, and that was the statement that this proud and truly courageous MeiCrackmon put before her.
And it was also a fallacy - a road to a dark, perilous path that few dared to walk, a creaky bridge standing atop a tall ravine. She knew the risk - but she didn't know the risk. But, unfortunately, this was a lesson that was not so easily given.
"No-one is telling you to be a pacifist. You are going to be among capable fighters who have decided that their best worth is their fist. You will fight as needed, on your patrols or to protect your patients - but expect to fill more of a 'support' role."
He'd sound resolute at that - but at that last comment? His ear would flick, and the wolf would roll his eyes.
"We will spar to practice, yes - once a week, or as time allows. You may be well-versed, but you can stand to learn the basics. You can either learn that through me, or through your schooling at Luminas - either way, I'll help you at least temper your claws."

A flick of the ear and holly shared that sigh.
Maybe… well maybe she’d have to focus on one. Maybe she’d focus on two but if the wolf was going to be this firm what else could she do? She’d bite at her lower lip and nod her head as the other told her how it was going to be. She didn’t need to be a pacifist and she would be part of a group of fighters that were capable and had decided that their fist was their worth.
”...Well I suppose I should share all the forms I’ve got that even can do supportive stuff…”
Holly mumbled a little bit and she’d blink at the fact she was going to get to spar with teh wolf. Once a week or as time allowed. She was well versed yes but… More time in the basics would help her greatly. She’d tilt her head a little bit and then rub at her neck.
”I didn’t take combat classes this semester. I thought I’d be okay if I didn’t… Should I ask for them to move one of my other classes to it? I do have a free elective and all that…”
She didn’t mind switching and being a latecomer. Then again she probably knew more about the basics than some of the kids that were there… She’d close her eyes and sigh; unsure of what she really should do about that but once given enough time she’d speak again.
”...Are we going to have to fight to have me join? I know ma did that with everyone and that everyone had been fighting or something for it in some way or another. I don’t know the reason behind that though…”
Honestly the knights were… well. Something she knew her ma put everything into and even the second iteration had gone forward to try to be something in them. Could she be more than a doctor? Or perhaps her role would ultimately fall into that and she’d have to live with her patching up wounds of fights she never got to see.
She’d grit her teeth and shake her head. No… that wasn’t what he said at all...
"...What do you think I should do then? If I'm to join and do stuff. If I'm taking a supportive role. Should I be handling things in a more.. PRish fashion?"

She didn't already start her combat classes?
Well, maybe the timing didn't work out for her, or maybe she was thinking that Iko would be a better teacher anyway. That last bit actually made the wolf give a small grin, the canine giving a small shrug after a moment of thought. "You can if you want to - I'm not going to tell you to mess up your schedule for it. Plus, there's no guarantee they'd even accept you late, right?"
She'd catch up just fine, but sometimes, teachers could be picky! As to that next bit, the wolf shared an earnest chuckle. "K was particular about testing everyone, but in your case, its honestly a formality. I might be pushing the wrong tone, but we are in need of a doctor - and, though you might not exactly be comfortable with it, you do have a set of skills that many don't even think to practice." To that, he'd actually just put it out there: "Would you want to keep in practice as an assassin? Its not something that the Knights provide for - but there's value in that level of surveillance, if we ever need to patrol something in Terminus or Whitewater."
That, of course, led to that next question. What would she do? To that, Iko bit his lip. "Short-handed as we are, you're going to find yourself a bit stretched thin, with everything. Honestly, if you have good suggestions for additional members, I'd hear you out. No guarantee they'd meet my standards-"
"-To be fair, no-one here meets them, Iko. You're a hard-ass."
Iko rolled his eyes. "... But we could use the hands."

Holly rubbed at her chin and thought about it some more; she did have two electives she found boring so maybe if she doubled up she could find a way to get them to include her. At the question about them accepting her this late she’d just give a small shrug.
”Depends on the teachers I guess. I’ll look into it but no promises.”
Holly sat there with a somewhat curious look on her face as iko spoke about her ma. How that she needed to test everyone but with her it’d just be a formality. Then he segwayed into something she really wished that he didn’t. A set of skills not many think to even practice. Would she want to keep practice as an assassin? Holly’s mood and expression dropped almost in an instant. There wasn’t anger, there wasn’t pain. Just a sheer overwhelming flatness to her voice.
”No.”
She didn’t even give the thought any weight and moved on herself. But his reasoning for the next bit was true and prompted her to bite at her finger in thought. Stretched thin and needing people? There was one person she had on the mind for that. He might not be powerful yet and was rather humble in origins. Just an owner of a diner. But K started out as an owner of an Inn for thousands of years before her slow transformation to whatever the hell she ended up as.
”I know someone that we could ask. He lives in the dark area. I met him while doing an active study of the dark area for my classes. Runs a small diner. He’s already got some first aid training and from our interactions so far well… I’d say he’s a good fit. Only a rookie though but I’m pretty sure in an environment such as this one that would change quickly.”
Holly scratched at her neck and then tilted her head; she didn’t want to include the fact that she was smitten with the person either. That would just make her seem biased. Even if she was a little biased who wasn’t when giving suggestions like these?
”Goes by the name of Agress and he’s a type of mon I’ve never seen before. White fur, big wolf type, mask and some pants. More like a weregarurumon but… a lot more slender?”
Holly gave a shrug; her flatness had dissolved for the most part but she seemed a little agitated about the earlier question even if she had dismissed it outright...

A flat no, eh? Some might have been disappointed, but Iko just met it with a shrug and moved on. Holly clearly left no room for discussions or arguments. So he didn't even spend another word on it.
Instead, he focused on something a little more interesting - a person who ran a diner in the Dark Area? Despite being a rookie, it definitely took some grit to hold up something like that without succumbing to thieves or the like. "Hm... alright, if you get him to come here, I'll take a look into it. For now?"
He'd give a nod, and would press a button on his desk twice. About ten or so seconds later, there would be a knock at the door, a familiar BlackGatomon stepping in. "You need me - oh, Holly?" Syre gave a blink, half confused, as Iko returned a nod to the two cats.
"Syre, your sister will be joining us, starting today. I'll have Garlond set up a room for her, and get her a room key and access to our portal system this afternoon. What I want you to do, is show your sister the ropes of this place. I'll leave it to you."
And with that, Iko would take his seat, one more nod given to Holly before he returned to his paperwork. Syre, after a moment, would give a sigh and motion for Holly to follow her out.
"Sorry about him, really - wolf's a good 'mon, but he's impossible to read, sometimes. Trust me, he's excited to have you on." After that, though, she'd give a smile towards the MeiCrackmon! "But good to have you here!"

Holly had no desire to go back to that life. She had stared down the option quite a few times but the harshness of that life didn’t suit her. It had worked with her well and she might have been thankful for some of the skills it gave her but the strangeness of it all didn’t sit well with her. She left no room for discussion because she didn’t want to be coerced or tempted to change her mind.
Holly nodded her head as Iko laid out that if she brought him along that the other would take a look into it. That was only reasonable to her, maybe if she explained everything to the other wolf they’d want to or consider it! For now though… She’d turn her head as the door was knocked on; the meicrackmon giving a small smile to her older sister.
”Hey sis.”
The meicrackmon felt a smile tugging on her face and she’d stand up as Iko gave her sister her ‘task’ of sorts. A room key, access to the portal system… and her sister got to show her the ropes of the base known as vander tower.
”See yah Mr. Iko~ Mr Luke~”
Holly would give a small wave to either of them and close the door behind the two cats once they were out of the room. The meicrackmon tilted her head a little bit and then chuckled at hearing about Iko from yet another individual. Her ma had told her a little bit about the wolf but not too much. Maybe because she didn’t want her to get interested in the knights or because she didn’t expect them to meet all too often.
”To me it seems like he’s got a rough exterior. Soft interior and maybe a secret that no one other than his tamer knows about?”
Holly playfully gave her sister a small pat on the shoulder and flicked her ears forward. It was good to be here, a place she hadn’t ever really thought about joining up until all the nonsense with her ma. She’d scratch at her chin and mull something over before speaking.
”It is good to be here. I don’t think ma would have expected this. For all of her kids to join the knights. Or heck. All of them to at least be in them at some point. Where we gonna go first?”
Holly was rather familiar with the layout of the base; given she was allowed to be in it before it’s refurbishment. But this would be the first time after that and after the point in time since K’s death. Even with a small group they seemed to be managing just fine…
”And whereabouts are you patrolling sis? I know that Ma went on a few and Iko mentioned em but I can’t help but wonder what you’ve been up to in that regard.”

"I, um, don't know if I would read even that much off of the wolf, Holly..."
Syre just gave a chuckle of that, shaking her head as she led the way through the base. Syre would have time to address her sister's questions, while also showing Holly the general layout of the base. "Really, I was just going to go counterclockwise and hit all the important points. For example," she'd lead off to a hall on the right, "These are our on-site dorms. Think of 'em more like hotel rooms than anything else." Syre would open her room for an example, and as she didn't use it very much, it looked pretty bare and simple. It didn't warrant much of a comment past that.
She'd work on through the next few areas - the kitchen, a mess hall, a common area - as her ear gave a flick at Holly's next question. "Hm? Oh, I handle the Eastern Timberlands. That's about my entire patrol area right now, we're trying to get a handle on some invasive mushrooms. Silence has the desert and the Valley of Dragons, and Iko's on-and-off in the Dark Area as well as 'wherever he's needed'. Oathgard handles the skies."
Syre would turn another corner: "And these are the administrative offices. Garlond, Joseph, and the rest work here - though sometimes we get pulled in to discuss matters with agents for Whitewater, Terminas, or Luminas. Its where the 'mission' work usually comes to us." She'd give a sigh, at that. "And let's see... the head office is back there, as well as Oathgard's own, though I can't imagine he wants to be bothered right now. And, this way..."
She'd push open a door to the center of the facility. And compared to everything else, well - a giant, shielded arena might have looked somewhat out of place, considering the purpose of everything around here. Syre cleared her throat, with a cough. "Is our... practice area. Though I think mom got a little overzealous designing this. She wanted a space where we could go almost-all-out without damaging the surrounding area, but... like, the desert exists, ya'know?"

”It’s just more a guess than anything sis.”
Holly grinned at syre and followed after the other; thankfully they could address all her questions and well… Learning where the dorms were was important and she leaned to look into the room as it was opened. It was pretty bare… Holly could see it being used for a lot if the sizes were the same for all of them.
”Perfect place to put some work benches and study stuff… Hmm hmm…”
Holly perked up when syre told her about the various locales and who was assigned to them. Syre was just to the eastern timberlands, Silence had the desert and valley of the dragons for some reason. Iko was on and off in the dark area as well as where he was needed… And oathgard? She’d scrunch her nose at that last one.
”I haven’t met Oathgard yet. He’s… the seraphimon right?”
Holly looked on with interest as they were now in the administrative offices. There was a lot here for such a location. Garlond, joseph and such were all working in this area. They’d get the missions from this area for the most part… And then to the head office?
”The head office was ma’s wasn’t it?”
Holly asked curiously and well… Once they were in the shielded arena, Holly's ears flicked forward. She had been here before but not since the revamp of the location.
”I’ve been here before. Fought my clones a lot for practice. But it looks a lot different. The desert does exist but if you feel for it really hard you can pick up the tingle of a signal suppression field… makes sense she wouldn’t want anyone to know what our levels were. That or she didn’t want people to worry about high level signals near a city.”
Holly gave a shrug and walked out to go take a seat on the middle of the floor. Sighing and flopping back to look at the cieling. She’d stare for a little bit and then just shake her head.
”When Ma first explained the knights to me I thought they were cool but I didn’t want to be a hero back then. I didn’t want to do what they did. But after a while I just kinda grew to want it. To do the sort of stuff. To help people. I think that’s what every family member of ours wants. Da. You… Siris… Heck I bet that our two siblings that are still in their eggs will end up in the knights.”
Holly let out a small chuckle and shook her head. It was amusing to think about… Little amber and little coal. Or little duke and… whatever else they had in mind for names. There were a lot of options and she was pretty sure that like her and syre they would get lovely names from their parents.
