"The Digivice Synchro"
Nexus was slowly building up. They were getting great support from other Digimon they met, even some from Luminis and other places in the Digital World. More importantly, the computer programmer they met in the real world was a big help and was able to use his skills, along with his new partner Datamon, to create a grandiose home for them all. The floating city NEXUS.
As they were still constructing the data of the cityscape, the main lab was already constructed for Logan and Datamon to work. From there they had an impressive setup, from a big-styled computer mainframe with a screen as big as a big-screen television, keyboards, modems and all kinds of gadgets Zachary couldn't wrap his head around. There was also a work table and a hologram projector in the center of the room. The two were in their element there as Zachary approached them one morning, along with Panthermon and others who could make it in response to their email on the tamernet.
"So what was so exciting you called us at 7 am in the morning, Logan?" Zachary said as he stretched his arms wide.
Logan spun around in his computer chair-- which for fact was digital and thus didn't truly touch the ground as he moved. The young boy had blonde hair and glasses, seeming a few years younger than Zachary. However, he was smart. He graduated high school and now attended Tokyo's Institute of Technology college. When the others told him and showed him the Digital World, he ended up hitting it off with Datamon, the little guy that scurried on the workshop table nearby. They got along great and became partners.
Logan couldn't help but smile as he greeted them. "Sorry guys, but this couldn't wait. Remember how I was saying how I was studying the programming of the Digivice. While I have made progress. There is well... good news and bad news." he explained.
"Good news and bad news are poor reasons for waking up a sleeping jaguar from his cat nap," Panthermon said with a mock-grim tone as he let out a wide yawn, showing his razor-sharp teeth to Datamon's direction.
"Oh, chill out. Trust me, I'm a genius!" Datamon boasted.
Logan gave his partner a grumpy look. "You didn't do it all by yourself, Datamon." he said and turned to the big screen to show them all what he found...

Ryuji made his way to NEXUS headquarters with Yoshihiro held in his arms sound asleep. Apparently, despite his martial arts training and discipline, the little digimon wasn't what one would call a morning person. Fortunately, Yoshihiro was a quiet snorer since soft sounds were coming from the little digimon. Ryuji had tried to wake him but that proved futile, as it seemed as long as there was no potential danger, Yoshihiro slept like a rock.
"I've heard of heavy sleepers but this is ridiculous." Ryuji groaned as he adjusted Yoshihiro so that he was cradling his tiny partner in the crook of his arm like a baby. Soon he arrived at NEXUS headquarters and called out "Hello! It's me, Ryuji!" Despite the loud yell, Yoshihiro seemed dead to the world or in a coma like state since he didn't even twitch at his tamer's yell. As hyper as his partner was when awake he knew coffee was probably a bad idea so Ryuji sighed hoping Yoshihiro would wake soon.

The shout from Ryuji was enough to make Panthermon jumped as any cat would, so funny how Calumon refused to stir. All Panthermon did was growl at Ryujii, already grumpy that morning.
Zachary glared at Ryuji but wasn't too mad. "Hello Ryujii..." Zachary said sleepily as he turned to Logan's presentation.
With everyone there, Logan turned and typed into his keyboard. "As you know, I been trying to crack the code that makes our Digivices so powerful. The ability to cause evolution and open Digi-gates that allow us to cross into this dimension where data is physically manifested. I wanted to understand it. This little device, despite what models people have for it, shares these common traits and when analyzed, it shows interesting results. As I shared before, the core processing code that I wanted to crack is beyond anything seen and I cannot crack it. It might as well be something on the spaceship in Roseland. It's constantly shifting and evolving. " Logan spun around in his chair to face them, holding his blue D-Arc/D-power in his hand. "This little device has more processing power than a supercomputer, which considering its size and power should be impossible. I taken it apart and couldn't find the answers cause it defies physics. It's literally a device that is capable of evolving on its own."
Zachary arched his brow at the stream of data that he saw on the screen and then to Logan."So that means...?" he asked, not getting the point, though the information was important regardless.
"Means we still haven't cracked the code yet on how it works," Datamon jumped to the point, which made Logan glare at the machine Digimon with annoyance.
He sighed and turned to click something on his keyboard. The screen lit up with a string of multi-colored digital strands of code, wrapped around in odd cylindrical shapes that floated in the black background. "This is like... something from alien technology to really understand. It's just beyond me for the moment."
Zachary bit his lip as he finally grasped the point. "Okay, so I presume that is the bad news. So what is the good news?" he asked, hoping to get to the point.
This actually brought a smile to Logan's face as he clicked it closed again. "The good news is that while we cannot delve into the code of the Digivice's core, we can learn how it adjusted to new elements. Like Armors or Digi-Cards. The code constantly evolves, which means, we were able to learn how to improve on the code and apply it with new abilities." he said with pride. "Datamon and I been working on it for three days and we figured out how to do it."
"Damn right," Datamon said with excitement. "Though nothing for this pair of geniuses. We can now give your Digivices long-needed Upgrades. Interested?" he asked.

Ryuji listened to everything regarding the digivices before looking down at his own. Thinking for a moment he was beginning to find that it was odd that such tiny machines had so many abilities before he said "Maybe the digivices don't totally defy the laws of physics. The Digital World itself changes all the time so maybe the digivices, since they seem to come from there, follow the same rules." Sure it was a shot in the dark but it made the most sense to Ryuji. Meanwhile Yoshihiro rolled in his sleep and tumbled off his tamers arm causing Ryuji to pocket his D3 and grab the Calumon by the scruff of the neck.
The fall didn't wake Yoshihiro but the sudden stop did causing him to open his green eyes and look at Ryuji from the corner of his eye before he said "Ryuji, is there a reason you're holding me like that? You've never done that before."
Looking down at the in-training he said "Well you rolled off my arm and fell toward the floor."
"So you decided to rescue me? Sweet of you, Ryuji but even in-training digimon can handle a fall from higher than you are tall. We aren't as delicate as human babies." Yoshihiro snickered as Ryuji released him. The Calumon floated over to his tamer and landed on his shoulder before he asked "What are we doing here?"
Ryuji filled in his partner and Yoshihiro said "I think we should help out, Ryuji."

There was a pause as Ryuji's Calumon finally woke up and the two talked a bit. Panthermon watched the white fluffball move around and talked-- but more important, Ryuji grasped the concept of the Digivice pretty well. "I agree. It is clear there is more to these devices than meets the eye. But I think what Logan means is how a small device like this is as strong as a supercomputer, which means the power to run it and hardware it contains probably shouldn't be possible. It's next-gen technology." Zachary tried to add-in.
Panthermon continued to watch Calumon move about, the cat instincts made him distracted by him. Still, the cat listened.
"Yeah, that's what I meant." Logan added.
"Enough chit-chatting! Save that for the forums! Come on come on, let's get this party started!" Datamon said as he scurried across the table towards Ryuji and Zachary. "Digivices, please?" he asked with his hands out.
Zachary and Panthermon exchanged a look at one another, as it was a very personal and important device. Handing it over to Datamon with his overly eager personality seemed a bit problematic. Still, Logan also wanted to do it too and nodded at them. With a sigh, Zachary reluctantly handed over his violet-colored D-Power/D-arc to Datamon. Now all that was left was for Ryuji to do the same.

Though now on Ryuji's shoulder, Yoshihiro noticed that the digimon known as Panthermon was watching his movements. Most likely a result of him being a feline since it wasn't uncommon for most cat digimon to watch things that moved. He wasn't sure if that was a trait of anthropomorphic cats like Leomon but he wouldn't be surprised. Maybe later the curious little digimon would get to observe a Leomon in action one day.
Meanwhile Ryuji rolled his eyes at his partners eagerness. It was as if Yoshihiro periodically kept forgetting that he was the tamer of the relationship although they hadn't been partners long. It was almost like a relationship between two roomates since most the time Yoshihiro just did his own thing and when they were in the Digital World, Ryuji let Yoshihiro utilize his superior knowledge of that world even though it was apparent that at the Calumon's relatively young age, he hadn't yet seen a lot of his world. Still some knowledge was better than what Ryuji knew so most of the time he let the eager digimon get away with quite a lot, most of the time.
When asked to hand over his digivice he briefly glanced at Yoshihiro, who nodded, before he held out his white and purple D3. While not much different in appearance from the others the symbol of Calumon's Crystal Matrix on the the D3 made it stand out in a way. "Here but could you please be careful with it?" Ryuji asked as he looked at Datamon.

"Yeah, don't go fiddling around with something you shouldn't--" Zachary warned, but Datamon turned as he held both devices in his hands.
"Oh, don't you worry. I am not Rustport's number 1 programmer for nothing!" he said with a blink of his one 'real' eye. "I'll be gentle..."
He put them down on the table and reached the collection of tools-- which unfortunately the one he grabbed was a metallic hammer.
"YAAAAAAAHHH!!" SMASH!! Without any abandoned, he smashed the hammer onto the D-Power and D-3, breaking the devices open like an egg.
"GHAAAAAAAAA!!!" Zachary screamed, Panthermon too in shock to see Datamon recklessly smash it after claiming he would do the exact opposite. "WHAT THE HELL YOU GOT WIRE LOOSE?!" he cried, the device now in pieces of plastic, motherboards, and chips.
No doubt that Ryuji and his Calumon wouldn't be happy either to see this.
Not about to waste time, Panthermon immediately jumped onto the table as the agile jungle cat he was. He suddenly burst into flames along with his black fur and got up close to Datamon, growling with shown teeth at Datamon. "That's it! I'm about to turn you into scrap metal, you lunatic!"
"Whoh-whoh! Calm down, jungle cat!" Datamon pleaded as he dropped the hammer. "Relax, I saved the most important part!" Scurrying his legs, he turned and used his mechanized hands to pluck out from the destroyed piles two glowing chips with motherboards embedded into it. The chip each had a unique, soft glow as if generating power. "These are what you would call the Digivices' CPU. So take a chill pill, get off my table and watch the magic. "
Panthermon gave one last growl but the flames on his back faded away and he hopped off the table. From the center of the table, at Datamon's command, a section opened up and out rises a few more pieces of hardware-- narrow rectangular shells and motherboards that seemed hard to describe. As Datamon held the glowing pieces, he tenderly placed the two into the interworking of the devices' frames.
Logan watched from his desk, him also a little worried how Datamon kind of just danced to the beat of his own drum at times. But they were a bit alike that way-- except when it involved other people's property or feelings.
It took him a bit of time, as his hands produced a sautering tool, circuit pen and other tools used for fine-tuning electronics from the palm of his hands. Just when Zachary was about to finally ask what he was intending to do...
"DONE!" he chimed as if he was a microwave.
"Done with what?" Panthermon growled, still pissed off at the machine Digimon.
Datamon turned with a toothy grin on his mechanical face as he had his hands behind his back. He soon pulled the devices out-- revealing gray-colored shaped devices. They were smooth but blank at first glance, lifeless. They appeared to be a kind of 'flip-phone' device that Zachary had not seen in a long time.
"What is this?" Zachary asked.
"Quit being so overly cautious and just pick em up, already? I promise you won't be disappointed. Jeez no appreciation for genius, right Log?" Datamon asked.
Logan sighed and rested his chin against his fist, his elbow rested on the arm of his computer chair. "Well, I didn't smash their Digivices in front of them."
"Hey! You can't make an Omlete without cracking some Digi-egg, right?"
Definitely, Datamon had a screw loose.
With a grumble of his own, Zachary reached and took the device that Datamon handed-- containing the chip from his own. He picked it up and it felt a touch heavier than his D-Power was. However, a second after he touched it something happened.
The screen on the front glowed-- and the rest of the device radiated a glow as well. Slowly, as if color was just seeming from it-- the device changed colors in his hand. The flip-phone became black with outlines of a golden color. The screen also flashed with a logo-- the X symbol they had for NEXUS.

It appeared that asking the Datamon to be careful was asking to much as the small digimon smashed his D3 into fragments of plastic as well as Zachary's. Was this guy a psycho? Probably and Yoshihiro was not the first one to voice his opinion seeing as Panthermon had as well.
"In case your scrambled processor has forgotten, those aren't eggs! If I could digivolve to the ultimate level I'd be taking you apart! I didn't risk my hide traveling across the Digital Ocean to meet with my tamer for you to smash his digivice!" Yoshihiro ranted at Datamon in full fledged fury mode while Ryuji reached up and plucked his partner off his shoulder and held the angry digimon in the crook of his arm. Good thing Yoshihiro preferred his in-training stage for the sake of stealth since Ryuji knew he wouldn't be able to restrain his partner as easily in his rookie form. God forbid his armor champion form.
Sure Ryuji was mad but he kept his anger in check as he watched the Datamon and hated to admit but he agreed with Yoshihiro's assessment about the digimon possibly having a scrambled processor. Soon two devices resembling flip phones were shown to him and he watched as the one Zachary took changed in appearance so he figured, why not. Walking over, while still holding a fuming Yoshihiro, he reached over and picked up the other one. Ryuji and Yoshihiro watched as it changed from grey to mostly white with a little purple on the side. Above the screen was the symbol of NEXUS bit below the screen was the image of Yoshihiro's Crystal Matrix, so it was like an upgraded form of his D3 in a sense.
"So I guess this model wouldn't be called a D3 anymore." Ryuji stated in awe.

Both devices changed in color, resembling a touch of their former appearance or changes more appropriate. For Zachary, the black and gold mix did feel to fit Panthermon, especially after his latest Digivolution back in the ruins (teaser). "This is..." Zachary spoke as he saw the device. With a flick of his wrist, he opened it up-- and from there, the entire phone revealed it wasn't like an old-school flip phone. Inside had a full touch-screen like most smartphones, but malleable. Foldable. A few buttons were on the side, including one that normally was used to identify owner's fingerprints. Biometrics--- but the majority was on the touch screen light up to show app-like functions.
Logan smiled as he saw Zachary's expression light up. "Datamon and I been working on it for a bit when we learned the digivice's data was constantly adapting. So for the best explanation, it keeps all the same functions from Digivolvution to even its advance scanner. However, these devices are hooked up to the NEXUS network mainframe here, which allows Data to be synchronized to our HQ faster and with your digimon. We can do a lot more with it, but so far we included a temporal data-homing beacon for quick travels and also a fully automated mappinc system to help explore... "
The blank stares from the others might have been a hint for Logan to tell that he was going too fast and using terms that were too advance. Especially for the other Digimon. He cleared his throat and tried again. "This device will keep us all connected with an audio and video comm-link system, synchronizes data from here, the website and the devices constantly, and even has the means to allow you to teleport back to NEXUS." he explained.
"Wait? For Real? You can teleport like the Digital Gates?" Zachary asked.
"Well, there are limits. It only works in the Digital World or any data-space where contact with NEXUS is possible. You can't use it in the real world. Also it can only carry the data of you and the Digimon connected to it. So its not like you can travel with others in a tight situation." Logan explained.
"I see," Panthermon said, still a bit weary from the scare with their smashed Digivices. "But useful all the same."
Logan was smiling with pride as he continued. "These devices are completely compatible with most smart-phone software and user info. All we have to do is clone it onto the device, and it can substitute for it. You have your smartphone and Digivice in one, with no need to ever upgrade your hardware since the interior runs off the Digital World's coding." he said, "So while one thing at a time, its a handy Digivice for us to use and distribute among our members."
"This is pretty cool," Zachary said as he scrolled through the phone with his thumb. He soon snapped it close, causing the screen on the other side to light up with the X-Antibody logo. "So... what do we call these things?"
Datamon was about to speak, but he hesitated. The guy soon scratched his head, an answer not coming. "We call it-- uh..."
Logan smiled. "Eh, naming things were never our strong suit. We are open to suggestions." he said.

As Ryuji examined his digivice's new appearance he had let go of Yoshihiro. That was okay since the little Calumon was calm again and floating near his tamer's head also looking the new digivice over. It still had the same color scheme of its previous form but the biggest differences seemed to be the hardware as explained by Logan.
"At least returning to NEXUS is a handy feature in a pinch." Ryuji said agreeing with Panthermon.
"The ability to function much like those smart phones is handy too considering a lot of human technology fritzes in the Digital World and if that stuff works it's barely." Yoshihiro said after thinking for a bit.
When the topic of what to call the new digivices came up both tamer and digimon seemed to draw a blank and just shrugged not able to come up with any ideas themselves.

Ryuji and Yoshi were liking what they heard about the Digivice. That was a good thing. Zachary too examined the phone, seeing all kinds of attachments and since the device constantly evolved, it could suit any situation it seemed. At the loss of the name, Zachary opened it once more and saw the screen light up, with the logo and applications for effects.
"A digivice... syncronizing data..." Zachary murmured in thought. As Panthermon looked up at it too, Zachary blinked as a name came to mind. "What if we call it... the Digivice Syncro. D-Sync for short?" he suggested.
Logan blinked as he adjusted his glasses. "That's not a bad one. I like it," he said.
Datamon shrugged. "Eh, I heard worse. D-Sync seems good enough, boss." he replied in his usual smart-ass reply.
"So what else can it do?" Zachary asked, smiling at the new Digivice.
"Actually about that," Logan said with a smile as he slid off his computer chair. "Datamon and I did something that might be very useful to you and other tamers. But its still beta testing."
"Best we take this party outside the lab or else you'll wreck it." Datamon said.
They soon reached outside of the lab, which still was much of a green area as Nexus had not launched yet. Once they were, Logan explained. "After your battle at the jungle ruins and when Panthermon became Ancientsphinxmon, we noticed how your biometrics were synced to his. While normally not welcomed, it did offer a great power boost. After we studied the data, we figured out how to use it to trigger the evolution but..."
Zachary looked to Logan, unsure what he was leading to. Eventually the boy adjusted his glasses and spoke again. "If you don't want to feel his pain again, I wouldn't recommend it. We can find other ways to find that evolution again. The plus is, however, the boost of your synchronized energies offers a far more powerful boost."
Zachary looked to his Digivice, and then to Panthermon beside him. A smile showed as he looked back to Datamon and Logan. "Honestly, guys... it doesn't bother me at all. When he and I were like that, it felt good. Despite the pain of sharing his injuries, I felt more alive and for the first time, I felt I was actually helping him. That we were doing this together. So let's give it a try. I'm not afraid of the side effect. Really," he explained.
A mechanical chirp came from Datamon as he hopped up in excitement. "Atta Boy! I knew you weren't a limp floppy drive!" he commented.
Panthermon, however, looked to Zachary from below. "Are you sure, Zachary? I don't want you to be in pain," he growled.
"I couldn't be more sure. We finally reached Mega, and if it means being by your side, I'm down for anything. I wouldn't do it if I didn't have faith in us both," he said.
While a cliche thing to say, the cat turned a little red to hear that.
"Gaaah! No more sappy stuff! Let's see action!" Datamon said as he waddled over to Zachary. "Let's give it a whirl. First, open the Digivice. Either you click the 'Syncronize' app, or think it up. Once its up, press your thumb into the touch-button at the bottom to read your fingerprint-- and synconize to your nervous system. After that, hang on for a powerup, baby! " he explained.
Zachary and Panthermon exchanged glances once more, then Zachary smiled at his new D-Syncro. "Alright, let's do it!" Zachary said with excitement.

"D-Sync, huh, works for me." Ryuji said as he ran his fingers over the D-Sync. It was something he had to get used to seeing as it was so different from his previous D3 except the color scheme.
When Datamon recommended they go outside, Yoshihiro grinned mischievously, apparently his playfulness had returned, Ryuji was starting to feel bad for Datamon as a prank would likely be directed at the said digimon. Ryuji would later try and talk his partner out of his plans seeing as Datamon was an ultimate level digimon and who knew what he was capable of.
When Zachary and Panthermon's transformation to AncientSphinxmon was mentioned, Yoshihiro explained "Some times humans and digimon fuse together to create their strongest stage while other digimon take a more traditional route when it comes to digivolution. The fusion process is called Biomerge Digivolution but as explained it has it's downsides. Then again, a tamer is always at risk during a digimon battle."
"Explains why you told me to take cover during your first battle." Ryuji said as they would follow Zachary and Panthermon outside.

Zachary was confused by Ryuji's comment. " Well... that didn't exactly happen. What happened last time was more like... our senses were synchronized, but when he would get hit or hurt, I would feel the same pain." he confirmed. " That other concept is new to me." Datamon was waiting for the use of the technique, so Zachary took a deep breath and snapped open his D-Sync. (Concept of Synchro Use ) The screen lit up, as did the lines of the Digivice leading to the thumb-reader at the bottom. Holding it out, he drew back his hand and focused on his partner Digimon before him. " Now-- Panthermon, Synchronize!!" he shouted. He pressed his finger into the slot and felt a strange surge! Their pulse, their energy, traveling between them-- and the Digivice light up from its screens to the lines that ran across it. Panthermon's eyes widen as he felt it-- the surge of bioelectricity and connection with Zachary. As if his nerves and his partner's were now interconnected and it made him buzz with potential energy that gathered-- and erupted all around him. He roared and his form shifted with light and darkness. " Panthermon... Synchro Evolution!" he roared, his form becoming pitch-black and reshaped. The shadows of his previous evolutions flashed as shadows-- but soon combined and pulled back, revealing a powerful light. The shadows gave way to an ebony black armored beast that resembled a lion, with golden markings along the ebony digizoid armor it wore and black-like wings. It released a powerful roar, casting the shadows away. " --AncientSphixmon!!" it roared, emerging on the fields of NEXUS like a mighty heroic figure. The others looked in amazement as the Mega-level Digimon had come on its own, fueled by Zachary's own energy to keep him at the meta level. And yet-- their growth was far from done. However, the use of the Digivice Synchro was an effective step onward to their own personal evolution... END.

Both Ryuji and Yoshihiro stared in awe at not only the transformation process but the sight of AncientSphinxmon himself. "I thought the sight of you as SamuraiCalumon was impressive but this is something else." Ryuji said after the shock seemed to wear off.
"Armor digivolution tends to pale in comparison to a mega digimon though." Yoshihiro said.
"Makes me wonder what you'll become at the mega level. Perhaps you'll have a form as regal and magnificent as AncientSphinxmon."
"Maybe, who knows? The process of digivolution can bring about many surprises. For all we know I might be quite surprising in appearance. Two of the same species of digimon can have very different digivolutions."
"So we won't know till you digivolve. I like that mysterious aspect. Let's head home Yoshihiro."
