If Mandrake knew he would be dealing with one of the most troublesome of the newly evolved rookies, he would likely have asked for help on the job first. In his care currently was a newly evolved Chuumon and at first the little rodent's behavior was what only could have been described as angelic. However it would soon become obvious that The Village of Beginnings was probably all to happy to not have to deal with the little scoundrel anymore.
The quiet of the walk was soon disrupted by the Chuumon squealing out in a most unpleasant squeal that would have made nails on a chalkboard far more preferable. Mandrake covered his ears and his eyes clenched shut as he groaned in pain from the racket the Chuumon was making. Was this child trying to attract everything aggressive in the Timberlands or repel them, who knew? Either way, Mandrake had to find someway to make the insufferable noise stop before they ended up back at the Village of Beginnings as Digi eggs or Mandrake went deaf.
"All right, enough!" he yelled at the Chuumon and somehow the little screaming monster heard him stopping the high pitched sound, though how Chuumon heard Mandrake wasn't going to question because he was just glad the unpleasant sound had stopped. "Now, what was all that about? Do you realize we could of been put in danger by what you've done?" Mandrake asked as if trying to reason with the Chuumon.
The Chuumon just looked at Mandrake as if testing his patience, a mischievous smirk on the young digimon's face. No matter how many times the Village of Beginning got volunteers to escort him to Rose Wood, he was determined to make all of them crack. His record involved a mega digimon dumping him outside the Village of Beginnings after even threatening to eat him. What the Chuumon found funny about that was it was a Seraphimon that threatened to eat him. So what could this Impmon do any different? "What's wrong? Can't handle a little noise? Shame, if you can't handle a little noise, you won't make it to Rosewood. I guess you can't handle the aggressive digimon either. Why'd you take this job if you can't handle it?"
'Why that little beast. No mustn't let the little brat walk all over me but I can't harm him either.' Mandrake thought as he glared at the smug looking Chuumon before the Impmon grinned mischievously and said "I'll have you know that I can handle what ever you got planned for me and, when it comes to mischief, I can even outdo you. So bring it on." Mandrake then turned and walked with the Chuumon following behind.
The Chuumon had to admit that this Impmon had guts and was the first one that said he could outdo his mischief. "Bring it on indeed, Impmon. I'll find out soon enough if you can handle me." Chuumon said as he rubbed his hands together. Looking down he picked up a rock and threw it at Mandrake.
Unknown to Chuumon, Mandrake had used his telepathy to read the rodent's mind so he was aware of the rock Chuumon planned to throw. "Hypnotic Illusion." he quietly mouthed as an illusion of himself appeared only just behind him which allowed the crafty illusionist to sneak quietly into a nearby bush as the thrown rock passed through the illusion causing it to fade from sight.
"What? Where? How?" Chuumon sputtered as he ran to where the rock passed through Mandrake's illusion. "You couldn't of just disappeared. I guess you don't want the money for this job." Chuumon said his smug grin not showing how freaked out he truly was. Meanwhile Mandrake had snuck up behind him with a smirk of his own and layed his hand on the Chuumon's head causing the rodent digimon to jump high and squeak in fright.
"I guess you weren't aware of my talent with illusions where you? So you want to continue being a nasty little monster or do we continue this futile contest." Mandrake said with a grin while Chuumon growled while grinding his teeth.
"Just because you're gifted with illusions doesn't mean you are better. I'll make sure you give up on this mission." Chuumon yelled.
"Why do you do this, Chuumon? Don't you want to move on from the Village of Beginnings. If you travel with me than at least the journey will be less dangerous." Mandrake said trying to reason with the angry youth.
"It's not that I don't want to move on, I just don't want to move to Rosewood." Chuumon said with a sigh before he continued "Not like anybody who has even taken this job has even cared. All they want is the money for the job. What makes you different?"
So Chuumon was only acting out because he had no desire to live in Rosewood. His behavior made more sense now. Mandrake then said "If you don't want to live in Rosewood you don't have to, Chuumon. My job is only to get you there not force you to stay."
Chuumon looked up at Mandrake and said "Really? I want to live up in the north with a friend who digivolved into Penguinmon not long before me. He headed there shortly after he digivolved."
"I understand, Chuumon, I am looking for a friend myself. I haven't seen him since I was an in-training since he only spent one summer in the village I grew up in."
"Do you think I'll find Penguinmon?" Chuumon asked and Mandrake answered with a nod. "Then maybe you'll find your friend too."
"Perhaps. After all they both have to be in the Digital World somewhere. Let's get you to Rosewood before dark. Then you can just catch the next Trailmon up north." Mandrake said as the two continued walking, Soon they made it to Rosewood and Mandrake collected his money after he wished Chuumon luck in his endeavors. Maybe one day Mandrake would find his friend Lothar.
