Mystery at Open Mic Night! [OPEN]

"Well, that's my time! Thank you for being such a great audience!" Oliver had just finished his material during the open-mic night at the bar. His exit off the stage was followed by a wimpy round of applause from the audience. Oliver's exterior said that he was happy and excited; however, he was once again disappointed on the inside. Every weekend he wondered why he moved to Japan until he remembers the sadness he would have to face if he were to go back home to America. "I'll get it eventually...." Oliver thought in his head. His jokes that he told this evening went better than previous nights, so he decided to claim that as a victory.
The young "comedian" returned to his table where his belongings sat to watch the other performances. He liked to hang around and learn from the other comics, you know, the ones that got laughs. Oliver grabbed his bag that was on the floor and placed it on the table to retrieve his pen and journal. When he unzipped the bag, he noticed something different that he had never seen before.
"What in the world is this?" To his knowledge, the audience was watching the stage and not paying him any attention. He pulled out a bulky, black device. He had never seen anything like it. It had three buttons and a screen, but Oliver had no idea how it got there. He flipped the device over in his hand to notice a design. It was a laughing emoji. Oliver also noticed it was holographic. When he shifted, the design changed and looked like a sad face emoji with a tear. Oliver had a puzzled expression on his face. He had no recollection of picking this up anywhere or buying it. Maybe someone placed it in his bag? He couldn't believe it just appeared out of nowhere.
"What do these buttons do?" Oliver looked at the buttons and pressed one of them. The screen lit up before his eyes and an image appeared. He wasn't sure what to make of it, to him it looked like a little devil or something. Little to his knowledge, it was the spirit totem of an Impmon.

Mandrake entered the bar in his holosuit disguise. While bars were not where the disguised Impmon usually went, he figured he would see what activity was there. Glancing around with his blue eyes, he began listening to a performer on the stage that seemed to be a comedian or, judging by the crowd, one that wasn't very popular. When the young man sat down at the table, Mandrake sat down across from him.
Said young man was rooting through his bag when he found a gadget that was obviously unfamiliar to him. At the image of an Impmon becoming visible, Mandrake gaped in surprise briefly as he thought 'It seems like this young man may be a spirit wielder and, judging by his confusion, a recent one at that.' Mandrake was not paying any attention to the current act on stage as the human had his attention. Deciding not to just stare, Mandrake calmly said "It seems you had a rough night on stage."

Oliver almost didn't notice the man that had sat across from him, he was too invested trying to figure out what it was he had in his hands. When the man spoke to him, he quickly directed his eyes up at him. "Yeah, something like that. Oliver looked at the man and was confused why a man in a suit and top hat would be doing in a random bar. Didn't seem like the typical place for this guy, but looks can be deceiving he guessed. Oliver placed the device down on the table, he could tinker around with it later. "It won't always be like that though, I'll make my way to the top eventually." Oliver glance over at the stage, it was a singer on this time. A rather good one too. "Well, at least there is some talent in here tonight."
"What's your name by the way? Mine's Oliver. I don't think I've seen you around here before." He figured he would've remembered someone walking around in a top hat and carrying a cane, or maybe Oliver wasn't very good at observing the space, wouldn't be a surprise if that were the case. If he wasn't on the stage, he was usually trying to think of new material.

Mandrake watched the young man place the device he was looking at on the table. It seemed he was confused by the device. 'It seems my assumption on him being a new spirit wielder was correct.' Mandrake thought as he glanced at the device momentarily. Mandrake understood about the desire to be at the top of his game. Then the human introduced himself and Mandrake said "A pleasure to meet you, Oliver, I am Mandrake. I'm just a traveling magician and I don't usually come here so it's no surprise that you haven't seen me before. That's an interesting device you have there. How long have you had it?" Depending on Oliver's answer, Mandrake might have to let him know just what he had. The problem was how to go about such a difficult subject as digimon. Not only that he'd have to explain that he was a disguised digimon himself.

"Mandrake? Interesting name." He had never heard a name like that before, almost like it came from fantasy novel. It was nice to meet another performer, someone who can on some level relate to what Oliver does even though they are completely different. At their core, they are similar though. They entertain. Oliver was surprised that Mandrake asked him about his new discovery, maybe he knew what it did or what it's purpose was.
"Uh, I just found it in my bag a few moments before you showed up. Why? Do you know anything about it?" The odds were unlikely, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. Oliver was curious and the topic was brought to the table. Oliver's guess was it was some type of phone, not that he had seen one like this, but it was the best answer he could come up with. But it was missing a number bad, so maybe a handheld game. The options were endless in Oliver's mind. The most he has been able to gather is that there was a little devil looking guy on the screen, but other than that served no purpose. "I don't know what it does.Think I could pawn it or something?" The money would be nice, but Oliver wouldn't sell it. There was too much mystery in the air about this thing for him to just give it up. Perhaps after that he would, but he wanted to play detective for a little bit.
A waitress came up to the table. "Hello, gentlemen, drinks for either of you tonight?"
"Yes please, can I just get a water?" The waitress nodded and looked to Mandrake.

"Yes, I suppose I do have an interesting name. It's a name that doesn't seem to be common." Mandrake said as he thought 'Then again, where I'm from Mandrake isn't a common name either even though digimon are known to take human names whether they have tamers or not.'
Oliver asking about him knowing about the machine brought him out of his thoughts. Perhaps the best way to handle the question was the straight forward approach. Worst case scenario would be the young man freaking out so Mandrake took a deep breath and said "I know a little about it, Oliver, and this machine is quite special. Not every human gets access to such a device. As far as I recall it comes in three different varieties, the D3, the D-Tector, and the Xros Loader. Each has purposes in common as well as features that make them different from each other. If I remember right, that model is called a D-Tector. What drew me to this table was the image of the creature in it."
When the waitress approached and asked what they would like, Mandrake asked for water like Oliver had. Now to see how Oliver would process the information.

Oliver picked the device back up and looked it over once again."A D-Tector.... huh..... and what does it do exactly?" Oliver had no clue what this guy was talking about, but he decided to go with it. He also found the phrase "not every human gets access" amusing, it sounded like something an alien would say. Oliver looked back at the buttons on the device and pressed the one that brought up the Impmon.
"And what is it about this guy that made you come here?" Oliver guessed that maybe it was a character from some type of video game. "It just looks like some little devil guy, maybe we should call the church." Oliver found his comment amusing and almost thought to write it down in his journal, but it wouldn't make much sense to anyone else since they wouldn't know the context of the situation.
The waitress came back with two waters.
"Sorry to bombard you with all these questions, Oliver took a sip of his water. "but how do you know all of this if any of what you say is remotely true?" An idea suddenly crossed his mind. Oliver returned to his bag and begun to dig. Every electronic device he's every had has come with an instruction manual.
".... aaaaand nope, nothing. Thought maybe whoever put it in my bag might've left some form of instructions on how to use it or something."

Okay. So far Oliver had been handling the information well enough. Since Mandrake had been traveling both the Human and Digital World looking for a friend of his, though he had to admit such a process would be easier if he knew what his friend had digivolved into. Since Mandrake and his friend were roughly the same age it was a fore gone conclusion that his friend had likely reached the rookie stage as well. As for Mandrake's travels he had learned a bit about Tamers, Spirit Wielders, and Xros Generals and how to tell one from the other.
Speaking of spirit wielders, it seemed Oliver had obtained the ability to become an Impmon like himself but now to explain it. "I don't know how else to explain it, Oliver, but your D-Tector contains the spirit of that little devil and you should be able to access its powers." Mandrake also took a sip of water from the glass the waitress for him before he continued "I don't know how to break it to you, Oliver but I'm not exactly human myself. This is just a disguise so I can blend in but I assure you I mean you and all other humans no harm."
Yes it was odd such a device like the D-Tector didn't seem to have instructions almost as if humans were just meant to wing it, so to speak. Not the most practical plan but obviously other humans had managed just fine.

At this point Oliver was about to dismiss anything that this guy was telling him. "Right.... so if you're not human, what are you?" Oliver always had some belief that alien lifeforms were somewhere out there in the universe, but it was hard for him to imagine that this would be the encounter he would be having with one. He always imagined it as the "take me to your leader, earthling" type of thing.
Also, the idea that there was some type of entity in the device he held was strange as well. He wasn't exactly all for being possessed by some ghost, every movie he had seen about that usually did not end well for the possessee. "Are you seriously suggesting I let myself get possessed? Who knows, possession could be more fun than they make it seem in the movies. Maybe it was like a nice blackout, Oliver knows he's had a few of those in his lifetime. He usually woke up in his bed with some food or he woke up in someone else's bed.

Judging by Oliver's look alone it he was hesitant to believe Mandrake. Who honestly could blame him. If Mandrake had never seen a human before he would also doubt their existence as well. Ah well, might as well go for broke and continue "Believe it or not, Oliver but I'm the same species as the creature in your D-Tector." Mandrake said with an elegant sweep of his hand as he pointed to the D-Tector.
When Oliver mentioned getting possessed, Mandrake said "From what I've heard in my travels, It doesn't work that way most of the time. Think of it more like a mutually beneficial alliance where you draw upon the being's power as if your own. Some of the younger spirits do have more influence on you while the older ones seem to give a human more like instinctive nudges. Either way you would become that 'little devil' as you put it.

"Well, he or she is not telling me anything at the moment." Oliver sat the device down and sat back with his arms crossed. He was going to need something more substantial than the word of some magician in regards to the existence of some magical creature he was supposed to turn into. He needed to see it with his own eyes. Most people probably would have just gotten up and left, but he didn't have anywhere to be and so he thought he might as well entertain this guy's idea.
"I'm gonna need some proof or something." It all seemed very supernatural to him. He was supposed to become something else? Take on the creatures powers? What does that even mean? He thought maybe if what the magician said is true, it will make more sense when he figures out how to use the D-Tector. Oliver did enjoy the idea of becoming some type of superhero. Or maybe he would be a super villain.

Looking around Mandrake saw not many people but he was unsure of showing his true appearance in the bar. He then said "I'd be more than willing to show you my true form but it hardly blends in around humans. The being in your D-Tector is the spirit of Impmon. Impmon is a species of beings known as digimon, which is short for digital monster. Digimon are from a world parallel to this one called the Digital World."
It looked like Oliver would need at least a small amount of visible proof so after glancing around again to make sure no one was in sight, he moved his hand over what looked like a wrist watch and pressed a button on it returning him to his true form of a blue eyed Impmon. Shortly, he activated his holosuit disguise again and hoped that Oliver wouldn't freak now that he had some brief visible proof. Then again, he might think it was a magic trick at worst.

Oliver was surprised to see the sudden change of the magician, he probably would've panicked more if it weren't for the fact that they were both in public. He was definitely surprised, but he didn't want to draw attention to himself. He just sat forward and grabbed the D-Tector in his hand and thought for a moment. He wasn't exactly sure what to say, not everyday you see a grown man suddenly turn into a purple devil looking thing.
"So, you expect me to turn into that? Not sure how that's gonna work." Maybe he got the wrong guy and the device just ended up in the wrong bag. There was plenty of people in the bar, maybe it was meant for someone else to discover. Oliver couldn't even figure out how that would be physically possible. None of it was making any sense to him, maybe it was time for him to head home and get some sleep. He thought that maybe he was in some really weird dream.

"I didn't mean to frighten you, Oliver. I only thought if you saw my real form briefly you would believe me more." Mandrake said hoping he was reading the comedian's body language correctly. The only thing that probably kept Oliver from freaking in any manner was that they were in a public place and Mandrake knew it. If only Oliver knew that he wasn't as old as his holosuit disguise suggested. After all, Mandrake was still only a rookie digimon so he wasn't quite an adult, yet. "As for how spirit wielders channel those spirits to digivolve I have no idea seeing as you are the first spirit wielder I have met. If the D-Tector wasn't meant for you it wouldn't have just shown up in your bag as you put it earlier. These machines seem to involve destiny and those destined seem to be chosen by the Digital World itself. As for how these humans are chosen, I'm afraid I have no idea.

"Where do you come from then? Outer space?" Oliver wasn't quite sure what to do now, it some ways he felt he would no longer have a normal life if the D-Tector did what this thing said it would. He definitely didn't want to advertise having it due to the fact that in movies they take the aliens to some government facility. He had no intentions of letting that happen to him. Does the government even know about this stuff? He assumed they would, they probably have a whole department that did. "How do you even get to where you come from?"
If Oliver wanted to learn more, he thought he might have to go to wherever this thing came from. He doesn't even have the first clue as to how they would get there. Maybe Mandrake had a UFO that he could hitch a ride on. Oliver wasn't sure on how he would do with intergalactic travel though. It might make him sick.
