The Truth Will Come Out [Owen]

When they came across the Ancient Capital of Ys, the sight of its buildings both futuristic and traditional, the huge barrier that surrounded the city, and the bustling Digimon coming and going from it was a welcoming one that Justice, Vee, and Gummy were glad to see.
The trio appeared in the Digital World not too long ago, about forty five minutes minutes ago, in the Northern Prominence, the colder, mountainous region in the hemisphere. To spare them walking in the cold, snowy terrain, Vee had digivolved into XV-Mon to carry Justice and Gummy on his shoulder so that they could reach their destination faster. During the flight, the Gumdramon ignited his tail to provide warmth for his Tamer. Unlike the two of them that had a stronger build against the cold, their human wasn’t, so best to keep him warm before he turned into an icicle.
After landing at the front entrance, they had all taken a few minutes to get their bearings and warm up.
“Ok...so why are we here exactly?” Justice asked, leaning over the edge of one of the roads to see a few canals that flowed throughout the city. “Seems like a long travel to get one Infini-Store where we could have gone to someplace else.”
Gummy lifted his eyebrow. “Ah c’mon, Specs, you’ve never been to this part of the Digital World before.” Gummy replied. “Besides, I’ve read that some stores here are giving a 30% discount on all of their items and stock.” He pointed in front of Justice. “I think there’s a shop over there judging by how many Digimon are coming in and out. nine times out of ten they have it.”
“Alright, the sooner we do that, the sooner we get to move into Pal’s place.” Justice began to walk, taking a few steps to only realize his two Digimon weren’t following him. He turned around, seeing the two staring at him. “You two coming?”
Vee then devolved into Veemon. “Uhh we’ll just hang out here until you get back. Don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. Just take your time.” He gave a reassuring smile and wave.
“Al...right?” Justice didn’t question any further and disappeared into the shop, prompting Gummy to take out the D-Terminal once the two were certain that he was out of sight.
“Well, have you heard back from Owen yet?” Vee asked, bunting his cheek with Gummy to look at the D Terminal’s screen as well. “When’s he gonna be here?”
“Duh, I messaged him when we were still flying,” Gummy replied. “He should be here any minute now.”
The reason why they came to Ys was not just to pick up an Infini-Store, but to meet Owen, Bezil’s father. Why? To help Justice with his deeply-seeded problems. Ever since they became partners, the brothers had never heard a peep about Justice’s past—his childhood...until yesterday, and it was not the way they wanted that to be revealed. From what he had told them, they could tell that Justice had held on to those problems for so long that he’d simply brushed them, which only festered even more; they could feel it, and it was waiting to explode.
Gummy had filled him in with the situation, and now they were waiting for him, hoping that the Gaomon could let their Tamer let go of his anger, sadness, and hatred, before it does something harmful to him.

Owen had been bracing for this meeting the moment he had responded back to the message he had received from the digimon twins Vee and Gummy about their human partner Justice. While he knew that it was a big thing to ask, he figured out the reason why they would turn to him. After all, Gummy was his son Bezil's boyfriend, and the emotional state of a human partner could take a big toll on the partner digimon. Owen knew this because his husband Hikaru and several of his children also had human partners, so he recognized his own interests in this going well.
Also, given that Owen tried his best to be a good father to his children, a good friend to his friends, a good husband to his husband, and, above all, be someone others can turn to when they need help, he couldn't turn them down.
The Gaomon mostly paced about the now partially restored city of Ys, humming various songs to himself as he walked around the yards, checked out the view on the balconies to the beautiful sight of the Shining Sea, as he waited for this meeting to take place. While he still had young children in his family to take care of, he had asked Bezil, Matty and Jimmy to take over that for today. While baby Lewis was shy and timid, he did at least enjoy playing with his brothers. And even if Matty and Jimmy were pranksters at heart, he trusted Bezil to lay down the law if they overstepped their boundaries.
Owen had received a message that they were approaching and attempted to constitute himself. Even though he had never really got to know Justice, other than at the time of the hurricane emergency in Whitewater, he thought of this as no differently to his previous role as a Recon Captain, gearing up for a gentle talk to a Private who had suffered trauma on the field of combat. Well, even though he knew the trauma was different in this case, well, he'd still do his best to be helpful. Eventually, word came from him from the person on duty at the entrance of Ys of the arrival of the individuals that they were looking out for. A Veemon, Gumdramon and a human.
Owen acknowledged them and made his way to where they were. The Gaomon, dressed in his usual outfit of a khaki soldier's shirt, the insignia of the sword-and-wheel of the 7/71st Recon on his shoulders, a red bandana on his forehead, and boxing gloves hanging off his belt for when he'd need to use them in combat, waved to them.
"G'day there!" he said. "Glad you could make it. You guys going okay since the hurricane from back then?" he queried. Once they answered, he would continue, cautiously, knowing that at any moment, Justice could simply decide to just up and leave, according to what he was told. "So, I hear you've got some issue that needs sorting out? Vee and Gummy filled me in over Tamernet. Could you please follow me?"
Owen was aware of the set-up that would lure Justice in without him suspecting. While he disapproved of the deceit, he decided that it was probably for the best, if Justice's response to this... "intervention" would be to simply up and leave. However, he had replied quite clearly in a message back to them.
"Alright. For this process to work properly though, it'd be best if both of you were present as well, for support. Things like this need the human's digimon partners present so that we're all on the same page."
He kept it deliberately vague so even if Justice saw the message too, he'd still be under the impression that they were going to indeed get an Infini-store replacement.
Once they were securely in a private room (there were many in Ys, it being a formerly abandoned city, now gradually being repopulated thanks to the efforts of KIZNA), thankfully with an active fire in the fireplace, making the temperature comfortable, Owen would sit on a chair, then offer Justice, Vee and Gummy some warm beverages.
"So, before we do this, I just thought I'd might like to catch up with you guys." the Gaomon said, smiling. "We first met in Whitewater, and it was a horrible event and I'm sorry it happened, but, we all came out of it alive..." he turned to Gummy. "And given that one of you has since become quite enamored with my son Bezil, I thought I'd ask, out of courtesy, how are you all going?"
He hoped that they'd take this gentle opening as intentioned - just as a means to break the ice and get comfortable.

Justice wasn't in the store for too long. It turns out that the Infini-Stores were all sold out. A bummer really. He knew they were hot on the market, seeing that the majority of Tamers he'd met had them, but he didn't expect them to be that sought out. Well...a cube that can store nearly all items--big or small--would be just as hot on the market like the new Iphone had it been sold in the Human World. Even though he saw a lot of intriguing things, he thought it was best to come back another time. His main priority at the moment was to still get an Infini-Store unit.
He regrouped with his two Digimon, who were still at the same spot near the entrance, just as they promised. "Yeah, the store didn't have any of those Infini-Stores." He said. "Maybe they have some at the other town over; lets get mosey."
The twins broke into a sweat and nervously began to follow Justice, walking as slowly as they can. This wasn't good. They didn't expected him to come out so fast. Knowing the way he shopped, it would take him what seemed like forever to pick out the things he was looking for due to catching his eye on something else and pondering whether or not he should buy it. If this keeps up, all that planing yesterday night would go down the gutter in failure, and failure was not an option.
Before they could go any further, the trio saw a familiar Gaomon approaching them: Owen. "Hey there Owen!" Vee cried out cheerfully. "Long time no see!"
Justice only waved at him, giving a quiet "What's good" to him. Gummy gave a quiet sigh of relief, thanking the Sovereigns that he arrived just in the nick of time. Otherwise he would've had to cause a distraction.
He gave a cheeky grin at Owen. "Oh yeah! W'eve been doing alright, old man!"
Once the greetings were done, Owen revealed that he knew about the problem Justice was having and beckoned the three of them to come with him. Assuming that was talking about the lack of Infini-Stores in the city, the young man became surprised. "For real? You know another place where they're being sold at?" He turned to Gummy. "Damn, Gummy. You're pretty quick when it comes to texting."
"Heh heh. Damn right I am." He gave a small wink to Vee. Good. 'Operation: Make Justice a Happy Human' was now in full swing. As they walked, the D-Terminal they Gummy held in his hand buzzed and he read it, without their human taking notice.
They then went into a private room in one of the nearby buildings, the small room housing some furniture and a fireplace. Owen offered the three warm beverages, which they happily complied.
"Aww you don't have to be sorry about that happening," Vee replied. "Besides, it'll take more than a storm to take us down! That hurri-whatever that storm's called was lucky that we couldn't evolve to the Champion level back then. Otherwise we would have all blown the storm away."
Gummy narrowed his eyes at this brother. "Yeeeeah...that's not how weather works, numb-nuts." He turned to Owen, blushing at the mention of Bezil. "I've been good. Can't complain really. Loved your son and I's first date, can't wait for the next one. Hehe~"
The twins then turned to Justice, who was staring at the warm drink he still had in his hands, spaced out, like he wasn't even in the room. It took Vee to nudge him on the thigh to get his attention. "Huh, what? Oh, um...I've been fine, I guess."
Vee and Gummy can easily tell that was a lie, but didn't comment.

Owen had to smirk at Gummy calling him "old man". In times before he would have bristled at this, but, given that his son was in a fling with the digimon that had called him that, yeah, he decided it was appropriate enough. Still, he felt the need to give a bit of push-back. "Heh, not too old to kick your ass, sonny." he replied.
Still though, Owen felt unhappy at having to keep up the deceit to bring Justice into position with what his partners wanted. If anything, the ideal situation would have been for Justice to approach him on his own auspices, but, as far as he knew from communications with his partners, that would have been impossible. From what Owen knew, Justice had stubbornness and pride in himself and the path he had walked so far, but, this path was not bringing him fulfillment. And that his partners had approached him like this to try and help him out, Owen had to play this delicately.
When Vee talked about fighting the hurricane, Owen had to chuckle. "Not to rain on your parade or anything, mate, but, heavy weather events like that happening? Only gods can stop those. For the rest of us mortals, all we can do is hold up and shelter."
Owen was then pleased to hear that Gummy wanted to continue his relationship with Bezil. "That's so great, and given that he's been in such a good mood since your first one, I think he'd be pretty ready for a second date." he said, with a smile.
Then Owen's amber eyes turned to Justice, awaiting his response. Vee had to nudge him to respond, and he gave an offhand answer that all was fine, he supposed.
The Gaomon knew that wasn't true, given what Gummy and Vee had already told him. While he hadn't received the full story, he knew so far that Justice had lived a very problematic life with a difficult family. Owen could empathize with this, because many digimon under his command came from similar shitty backgrounds with horrible families. Just... this was the first instance in which he had to deal with a human on this.
Supposing that there was in fact little difference between humans and digimon, Owen felt the need to press further. He gave a worried look to Vee and Gummy, indicating that he'd need them to cooperate if this next part got difficult. Then his eyes returned to look at Justice. "You're sure about that?" he began, taking a long swig of his cup of tea, then flipped the cup in his paws. "I might not have a human partner myself, but, I know enough tamer-digimon groups to know that there's something kinda off here, and I'm gonna be honest here."
Owen put down his cup and looked at Justice directly. "Despite your experiences together, you haven't been able to evolve your partners to the Perfect level, have you?" he asked. "I'm sure that you'd like for that to happen, but, it simply can't, as long as you're hiding your emotions from them and your friends."
The Gaomon knew that this sentence would be risky to state. In fact, he wouldn't blame Justice if he just left the room and never spoke to him again. But, he had taken the message from Vee and Gummy seriously enough to give this some effort. As long as Justice remained here, Owen would try and help him.

Justice shuffled his hands into his pockets and continued to look down at the cup of tea, the steam beginning to fog his glasses. He didn’t answer, or shift his body when Owen expressed doubt in what he said. Why did he care about him all of a sudden? While it has been awhile since they’ve last seen the blue Gaomon, he’d only barely interacted with him during the hurricane a while back, so it wasn’t like he was close to him or something. His only relation to him was that Gummy was dating his son—nothing more, nothing less.
It wasn’t until Owen mentioned that Vee and Gummy hadn’t evolved to the Perfect level did the young man’s eyes shift to the Digimon. He leaned back into his seat with his back straighten, meeting his gaze with a frown. “Hiding my emotions?” Justice asked, his tone rising defensively. “The hell are you talking about? I’m not hiding my emotions from anybody. I’m good—I’m fine, I’m just tired. Is being tired a sign of being emotionally distressed now?”
Sensing that Justice is in denial, it was time for the twins to butt in. “Relax, Justice.” Vee said. “There’s no need to get antagonistic. He’s just showing concern for you because, well...you’re not there.”
“Yeah,” Gummy’s frown deepened. “ You haven’t been yourself lately since that whole DATS thing. And he’s got a point with us not able to evolve further. All of our friends—Alan and Levi, Kenny and Skadi, Colin, Bellamy, and Luke—have all been able to reach the next level because of their bonds becoming stronger. They all trust each other thick and through, so why can’t you do the same for us?”
Justice didn’t answer, he only narrowed his eyes at the dragon twins. Something was off. He knew they didn’t come here just to catch up with Owen; and the way that everyone was talking to him, it was almost like a...no…
Looking down at the D-Terminal Gummy has on his lap, he quickly snatched it away from him, with Gumdramon too slow to react on time. From there he went into the messages tab. He saw a conversation between him and Owen, all from last night. With this, he put two and two together: this was an intervention.
“Son of a—you two set this up!” Justice snapped, raising his voice. He got up from his chair, looking at his Digimon with rage. “I told you guys to keep what I said about my mom between us. And you did this to me in return: by filling him in on this?! WHY HIM SPECIFICALLY?!” The drakes didn’t say anything for a moment , only looking intently in his eyes before Vee gave him an honest and straight to the point answer. “Because we want to help you.”
He got up from his chair and went around the room covering his face, feeling outraged. Vee and Gummy have never seen their partner like this. They barely recognized him as the same man that would always crack jokes and be the life of the party. Justice could get angry, upset...outraged, just like any other person. But he never let his emotions get the better of him, until now.

When Owen had first received messages from Vee and Gummy, he voiced his objections to them, saying that it wouldn't be right to lure Justice into such a talk on false pretenses against his will. But, it had been made clear to him that it would be the only way they could help the tamer. There would be no way Justice would have agreed to something like this, so all Owen could suggest was something of a talk where he could, as gently as possible, help pull him out of the dark place that he was at.
While it might have been morally questionable if it had only been for Justice's sake, it was for the sake of Vee and Gummy too. Owen knew this, and he also knew that if Justice stayed the way he was, keeping his trauma bottled up and his emotions hidden, it would risk huge consequences for his partners, if he was unable to evolve them because of these. And so he had reluctantly agreed to this meeting taking place.
Owen had asked that they tell him nothing of Justice's secrets though, that wasn't for them to say, and he had made it clear from the exchange of messages that he knew nothing of the specifics that they knew. All he knew was that Justice needed help, and as a patient, gentle digimon with experience in helping others with trauma, he would do his best to help.
"Justice, please, you don't need to get angry about this, mate." he said, trying to calm him down, but didn't approach. He knew that this sudden shock had put Justice into a fight-or-flight response, and felt betrayal at being tricked, but it was important that all tried to remain calm and reasonable for this to work. "Your partners set this up because they care about you. They don't know how to do it themselves, so they turned to me for help, and I want to give it."
Knowing that he wouldn't be able to help Justice calm down by himself, he turned to Vee and Gummy. "I think it'd be helpful if you two say how much you care about him and why you wanted this to take place." he said, gently. "Don't insult or judge, just... be nice?" he advised.

Vee and Gummy knew that this would happen. They knew that Justice would react like this once he found out the reason why they came to this city. He had revealed some heartbreaking truths to them last night about his relationship with his mom—about how she’d emotionally manipulated and neglected him over the years, but kicker is, they never told Owen about his mom, only that he needed emotional help to vent. So Justice set himself up for that.
“Owen’s right,” Vee said. “We did this because we want you to be happy again. We don’t know how to deal with the things you’ve told us, so we asked him for assistance.” He got up from his seat and walked up to Justice, who was now sitting on the wall, leading his head on his lap. “So please do this. Not just for us, but for yourself.”
Justice didn’t give an answer, remaining still. It was clear to see that he still had bottled up rage that was ready to explode at any minute now. So Owen asked the two of them to explain how much he meant to them.
Vee turned around to look at Gummy, who gave a head gesture to him, telling the Veemon to go first. Taking a deep breath, the Veemon would begin.
“When we first saw you when we were still at the Village of Beginnings, I was happy—happy at the prospect of meeting and becoming friends with a human, since we’ve heard so many stories about them. Meeting you, I was so excited to know everything about you, from your favorite foods, your favorite color, to your passion. You told us all of that with causal glee, but the one thing you never told us was about your family.” Vee took a pause before resuming. “At first, I thought it was because you weren’t ready to reveal us to your family, but now I know there’s a lot of deep seeded problems that you’ve experience…”
Gummy got up from his chair as well, walking up to where Vee and Justice were at, but not too close. He stood aloof, his face slightly turning red.
“Ummm...Jestmon, I’m not good at this…” he began, scratching his head. “I’ll be honest with you, Specs, when we first became partners, I only saw you as a means to get stronger. But as we got to know you, I saw that despite you being a human, we were ‘birds of a feather—you always went head-first into danger, knowing that you didn’t stand a chance, but still wanted to get a taste of the action, I respected that a lot. And in time, I came to respect you. And that was when I decided ‘yeah, we’re partners now.’”
Vee nodded and placed a hand on Justice’s shoulder. “We understand how you’re feeling, but let us shoulder some of your pain. Even though we never say it, but we love you. And if someone ever dares to hurt you—I don’t care in what way—I’ll make sure to see that they go home with their underwear over their heads.”

Owen nodded at what Vee said, then turned to Justice. "I promise that I don't know anything about the details of what you told your partners that made them come to this decision." the Gaomon said, hoping that facet of information would be helpful in that the human was assured that his partners hadn't told this behind his back. "And if you don't want to share, then that's fine, it's none of my business." After all, this was being held against Justice's will. All Owen wanted to do was to provide a safe and healthy setting for Justice and his partners to work out their problems.
Owen then said nothing as Vee and Gummy revealed their feelings to Justice. First to talk was Vee, and it was clear the Veemon loved having him as a partner. But it seemed the problems that Justice was having was related to his own human family.
Owen didn't know everything there was to know about humans, but he did know that every human had a biological mother and father. Most humans that he knew - Yuuki, Colin, Tadao, Nik, all the others, they mostly liked their families. Well, Tadao - the partner of his eldest son Logan, that was at the very least questionable, but, for the most part, human families seemed to be the same as the digimon family he knew with Hikaru.
But, it seemed that Justice's family was the root of his problems. Owen didn't say anything though and instead listened to what Gummy had to say. It was clear that Gummy wasn't as open with his feelings as Vee was, but, he said enough that was helpful. Then Vee finished up with an affirmation that he deeply cared about Justice.
"Thanks for that, guys." Owen said to Vee and Gummy, then turned back to the human. "So then, Justice... quick check on you, mate. How do you feel right now?" he asked, gently. He wanted to know the mindset that Justice might be feeling after that, and once he knew, he'd be able to figure out the next step.

Hearing how much his partners care about him, Justice picked his head up, glancing at the two dragons. The two thought they had gotten through to their partner, and that there might be a spark of Justice coming back. But his thoughts, their hopes were crushed as Justice looked away and slipped back into covering his face with his legs. "No..." he blankly said to all three of them.
Vee was confused. "No...what?"
Justice then got up and stared at Owen for a moment, almost if he was staring through the Digimon. His eyes lacked the anger and frustration he showcased earlier, almost as if he didn't had any emotions at all. He then stared up at the ceiling. "You can't help me."
Confusion marred Gummy's face. "What do you mean?"
"I mean," Justice spoke again after a long pause where the twins waited patiently. During the silence, rain had started to fall, lightly hammering the window. "What's the goddamn point if I'm not even gonna say anything?" He turned to Owen. "You wanna know how I feel? I feel like a failure. No good to anyone. Not to my those I consider friends, associates, not even to my fucking family that expect me to go above and beyond for them. Everything I say and do, I'm met with criticism and outright mockery. Usually I would just give them the bird, whether it'd be fuckers that think they're better than everyone, or those with power, I don't give a damn. But there's one voice-- one person, that outweighs them all..."
"And that's your mom, right?" Vee inquired, casting the human with an understanding look.
Justice gave a half nod, and turned to Owen. "So what do you want to know, huh? You say it's none of your business, but it's gonna be anyway. It's the only way so you can come up with some type of 'solution' to get me to finally crack all the years of pent up anger and neglect that's been building up inside of me for as long as I can remember." As he spoke, his tone started to become more sharper, and more aggressive. "If not, then why the FUCK did you agree to do this, huh?! How can you possible even try to relate to me, to understand me?! For all I know, you live a life of prosperity and luxury with no problem whatsoever! How can you, and the two of you even fucking help me, where I don't even believe I can be helped?!"
Vee and Gummy looked at their partner in shock, speechless. "Justice..." Vee trailed, unable to find any words in his mind to say.

Owen initially said nothing as Justice responded, claiming that he couldn't help him. The Gaomon remained silent in his seat as Justice explained, the fire in the fireplace by now reaching its full strength, but even though it warmed the room, Owen felt cold from the look that Justice gave him.
Then he opened up about his feelings. Justice said that he felt like he was a failure, that all he got was mockery from his friends, family and associates. And the worst of it was that one of them was his own mother.
Owen actually reacted to this, making a small gasp. No wonder Justice felt this way. His own mother had mistreated him. He understood now. He had been conditioned to bottle up all those feelings of being hurt by those that he trusted and relied on, so now he was reacting with anger. Owen didn't react to Justice's lashing out at him immediately. That was what he had trained for after all in his old life - people reacting with anger and outrage when their deepest problems were questioned. In fact, he wasn't intimidated at all, merely trying to hold his own tears back at the fact that he was looking at someone who was so hurt.
Justice angrily questioned his motives, why the hell he would agree to this meeting in the first place, and how he could possibly relate to and understand his problems, and that he lived a comfortable life himself.
In the silence that followed, Owen was silent for a few seconds, his yellow eyes looking straight into Justice's.
"I agreed because I do understand, and I care." he said eventually, his voice clear, calm and gentle. "I have a family myself, and I understand how important it is to have good people in your life. I'm so very sorry to hear that you've been hurt so much by people that you trusted and relied on when you needed them. And I want to help you heal from all that hurt. Your feelings about it are valid."
Owen needed a few moments to gather his thoughts here. Honestly, this was something different to what he was used to. The trauma he had helped others with was mostly of a different nature, soldiers under his command traumatized by seeing their best friends killed in front of them, seeing them suffer from the loss, others that were shellshocked survivors, Owen was used to dealing with trauma from violence. This one, meanwhile, was a trauma of a different kind.
But first, there needed to be a line drawn in the sand. Owen eventually spoke.
"You said that I can't help you." he said. "I dispute that. If you give me a chance, Justice, I promise that I will help you. I won't claim that I can cure you of all your troubles in an instant, but, I can help you. That's something you humans and we digimon have in common. We don't do well alone. But, if you let me and your partners try and help you feel better, we'll do our best. And the only way we can do so is if firstly, we're honest, and secondly, we focus on what's real and shut off what isn't."
Owen hoped these words would at least begin to settle things down. But he hoped to make progress by starting with the most obvious example.
"For example, you claim that you're no good to anyone, but for the past few minutes we've been hearing just how much your partners love you. I'd say that was pretty real, wouldn't you?"

Justice threw his hands up and crossed his arms, letting the Gaomon say what he wanted. He couldn't help but grit his teeth when Owen mentioned his family, and how important it was to have them in your life to rely on, to talk to, to have fun with; Justice lost that leisure a long time ago, and it did nothing but boiled his anger even more.
Throughout his daily commit, whether it be the his world or the Digital World, he would always see a family or two hanging out with family, having a good time. From teasing, to laughter, and to a child holding a parent's hands, he could easily tell that they had a good relationship. Just merely seeing a glance of them made Justice resentfulness grew more and more. He would usually scoff it off, telling himself that he didn't need family bonds or petty attachments, but the truth is...he longed for it. He wanted to be able to call his mom or siblings everyday, wanting to know how their day was, whether if it was boring or not. But with how his mother is, and how she manipulated his older brother and sister, he'll never get that.
Owen disputed his claims that Justice was a lost cause and implore to give him, and his Digimon a chance. If he did, then that would begin the first steps of him healing. He looked away in response, staring at the window as it was contentiously pelted by rain.
He looked back when he asked him if his partners love for him is real. He nodded. "Yeah.." he said eventually, his voice quiet, lacking the rage he displayed a few moments ago.
"And...you love us to, right?" Vee queried. He felt like he probably already knew the answer, but felt prudent to ask any way.
Justice nodded his head again, not saying a word.
"You see, since all of us cared about your well-being, that means your valued." Vee said. "You're more valuable then you realize. And at the end of the day, I'm sure that deep down, your mom still loves you and--"
"Stop," Justice interrupted. "Just stop."
Vee opened and closed his mouth a few times, trying to add something before backing away a bit, right next to Gummy. Gummy remained silent, getting a feeling that Justice wasn't just pushing Vee off, but more as to preparing himself.
Justice then took out his phone, surfing through it. After a few moments, he would give his phone to Owen. If he were to take it, then he would see an old family photo, with a young Justice, his brother and sister, and his mom and dad. He didn't mind if he showed it to Vee and Gummy.
"That was when I was six years old," Justice said. "Back then, me and my family used to do a lot of fun things together. All of us were real close, probably like how you are with your family." He paused, clapping his hands together a few times nervously. "That was of course until both of my partners got into a heated argument one night, that eventually involved the police due to noise complaints, and my dad just upped and left us. I have not seen him since. Can barely even remember what he looks like without that photo. It wasn't until I got older was when I found out, from my mom that my dad...cheated on her with another woman."
He swallowed thickly, trying his best to hold back his emotions. "This in turn caused my mother to fall into a deep depression for awhile, and since she couldn't work, we lost the house and had to move out. I didn't knew then, but that was the first instance of my world slowly falling apart."

Owen hadn't meant to hurt Justice by mentioning his own family. While the Gaomon could indeed never relate to knowing exactly how it felt to have a bad family, he at least thought he knew enough about having a good one that he could help. And it wasn't like he had never met anyone with bad families before, one would be surprised about how many young soldiers came from terrible backgrounds that ended up under his command.
He was at least glad that Justice at least acknowledged what he said, and he was grateful to Vee and Gummy for providing that foothold. He then watched as Vee tried to say that deep down his mother loved him, but, from Justice's reaction to that, he knew that was a false statement. Deep down, Owen felt incredible sympathy for the human, suffering rejection from his own mother and wanted to hug him so bad, but restrained himself, knowing that such impulsive reactions would be unhelpful here. He had to be gentle and patient, and so that's what he would be. If Justice asked for a hug, however, he'd gladly give one.
Owen then stood up and accepted Justice's phone, looking at the picture it displayed. It was that of a clearly happy family - similar to his own when it had just been himself, Hikaru, Logan, Haku and Bezil, only with humans. But, as Justice revealed, one day, when the authorities were called on them on a particularly stressful situation, the father had simply upped and abandoned them.
And then Justice further piled on with the comment that his father was cheating on his mother from the start. That outraged him deep down. A family built on deceit from the start... that was trying to build a house on quicksand. And now here was Justice, left to suffer from his father's casual abandonment. Owen clenched his fists (although taking care not to break Justice's phone), thinking that this was one human that he would actually punch in disgust.
Justice then told of what would happen afterward, that his mother mentally suffered after being abandoned and made to look after him and his siblings. In this, Owen felt at least some sympathy to the mother, in that she most likely did not end up mistreating Justice with her full and conscious intent. But, at the same time, he understood why Justice couldn't forgive her. She was his mother, and at the time, the only one he could rely on to protect him from the horrible things of the world. And she had failed him.
Eventually, he had to say something in response. That couldn't be left just there. Justice had just unloaded a lot there. Owen wanted to continue being stoic, gentle and patient, but he felt that what Justice had said needed some validation. That Justice would reveal such raw emotions, it must be terrible for him.
"That's really horrible, and... I'm so sorry that happened to you." he said. "Before we continue... would you like a hug?" he offered. "I understand if you don't want one, just... I'm offering one if you need it."
Immediately Owen felt foolish for asking such a question. Just in his own experience of being a father, usually when one of his children were upset, a hug to validate their feelings physically and let them cry out their pain usually made the aftermath more amicable to deal with. It was something he had learned from his own father, and it had worked wonders with soldiers under his command that had never felt the affection of another digimon, feeling that affection, it healed them. Owen hoped that he could at least begin to help Justice this way.

There was a small pause after Justice revealed his upbringings to all three Digimon. He had to stop for that moment, not to gauge their reactions, but to gain his own bearings. Bringing up those memories began to weigh heavily on his heart, and that was only the half of it. He looked down to see both hands that were clasps together wavering. Dammit, he was showing signs of weakness. It took a long, deep breath for him to get the shaking to stop, before looking to Owen, who offered him a hug after saying all that. Vee agreed as well. "Do you want a hug from me as well?" he asked. "We can sense that you...you really need one." His lips were quivering, holding back in tears after hearing all of that from his Tamer. But he had to remain strong--strong enough to help carry Justice through this.
To his surprise however, Justice shook his head, refusing both of their offers. It was sad to see, but Vee understood; he was not ready.
Gummy on the other hand was surprised as well, but remained silence, not taking his eyes off Justice. On his date with Bezil, his anger had reached the breaking point and he proceeded to destroy and boulder in that beach in sight, to "punch away the anger." He was doing more damage to himself in the process, both physically and emotionally. It was only when the furred Gumdramon offered a hug did he stopped, accepting it, and sobbing as he did. It was a brief hug, but it did wonders for him; it made him feel a lot better as a result. Before he would stay far away from that sort of affection, but now it was something that was beginning to take in stride, and he hopes that Justice would do the same.
Justice continued. "During that time, my mother got out of her depression, but I fell into a...delinquency phase. I got trouble a lot. I got into lot of fights and stuck with a bad crowd. It lasted until I turned ten due to something that involved those people getting incarcerated for a very long time. I won't go into details about that since it doesn't relate to the topic."
The twins grimaced. Whatever had happened to those so called "friends" of his must have been something really bad, so they didn't try to divulge even further.
"Flash forward to high school, my mom become more harder on me, while coddling my older siblings. She made me do every chore around the house while my brother and sister did jack all. Every time I argued against it, she always used the phrase, 'you remind me so much of your dad.' I didn't know what that meant...until yesterday." It was there that Justice's stoic voice began to waiver, showing sadness that wasn't anger. "I think...the reason why she kept saying that is because I remind her so much of my dad, that she made it her mission for me to not become him."
He face contorted into a mixture of realization and sadness, tears finally stinging his eyes, on the verge of falling. He sat down on the floor. "She...she never wanted me to become my own person. She started to manipulate me, forcing me to become something that I was not. She always condemned and ridiculed what I like to do, since it never fit her idea of success. Even now, despite being thousand miles away from her, she still has an iron grip over me. I can't do anything to stop this. I...I..."
The young man was suddenly wrapped into a hug by Gummy, who held him tightly, not wanting to let go. Vee followed suit from the side, with tears in his eyes. Justice remained frozen.
"It's alright, you dork. Let it out." Gummy softly said.
On cue, tears no longer threatened to come from Justice's eyes; they finally flowed freely as he began to sob loudly, releasing all the pain that was wrapped tightly around his heart for years. It was then he came to the realization: his mom really screwed him up.

"Alright, that's okay." Owen said, not wanting to force Justice to do anything before he was ready. It seemed that right now the young human wanted to simply tell the rest of his story. The Gaomon hoped that his providing a sympathetic listening ear was helpful to him.
It seemed that after that, Justice was something of a delinquent in his childhood until the age of ten. From what Owen knew about humans, that was about halfway to their point of adulthood. He was a little disturbed about the point about incarceration, but didn't say anything about it when Justice said it wasn't relevant.
Then the next horrible point to come was hearing that Justice's mother was actively suppressing and stunting his growth because of her own selfish wants. Owen had to prevent himself from reacting angrily to that. How dare she do that. Owen would never think about doing that to his own children, he made it a point to let them grow and flourish however they wanted, just as long as they never did so harmfully. That she would treat Justice in this way, well, as much as he tried to hide it, there were signs that Owen was outraged deep down at this, namely his ears folding and his body stiffening. He didn't growl or bare his teeth though as he would when he was uncontrollably angry - and he only got like that when family or friends were immediately threatened.
It was the injustice of it. The soldiers under Owen's command had volunteered to be exposed to the things that had given them trauma. While it didn't make their pain any lesser, it was at least something they had mentally prepared themselves for. But in this case? Justice hadn't made any conscious decision to expose himself to that. All he had wanted was to live a standard life with his family for protection, and instead they treated him like that. It was so sad.
When Justice said that he felt like she was still manipulating him like that, after all this time and from so very far away, and seeing him break down from that, he stood up and joined in with hugging him. So, that was the crux of it. Justice had been emotionally abused and hurt by his own family. And given that he knew that humans usually relied on their parents for around 20 years, that was a very long time. No wonder he felt so resigned to it. He hadn't had the chance of having a good experience in such an important developmental stage in his life. No wonder he wanted to hide it from everyone. It was betrayal, hurt and shame, and that was the kind of feeling that could paralyze anyone without assistance.
"We're all here for you, mate, it's gonna be okay." he said gently. "You're safe now."
Owen would patiently wait for when Justice was ready to continue. Until then, he'd gently pat his back, thinking of what to say next that could start the path of healing from what those that had been his "family" had put him through.

It hurt. It hurts so much.
Why did it took him this long to realize he was in so much pain? That he was hurt? He always felt like "The Black Sheep" of his family, while his other siblings were considered "Golden Children." He can still remember the night he turned eighteen, the night where his mom flat out admit that his birth ruined the chance she had of having a big family. Back then he was more furious with what she said than hurt; it made him wept even harder now. She was his mom, and to say something like that--something so hurtful and manipulative like, just made him wish more and more that she was never his mom at all.
As Owen joined in with hugging him, Vee gently pressed his forehead against Justice's, his tongue darting out to lick away the tears that flow down his face while holding back his own. As a Digimon, he didn't quite understood the relationship of human parents with their kids. But what he did knew was that families were suppose to love and protect you no matter what. But from what her learned, Justice's own mother had done none of those things.
Gummy meanwhile couldn't help but tighten his grip around his tamer even more now. Just like him, it's not good to hold things in for too long, especially emotional and psychological pain. He thought it was only to make him a stronger Digimon, but really it was only making the pain hurt more and more. It was thanks to Bezil that he learned that it was ok to be in the comfort of someone you care about when feeling sad. And with any hope, Justice would do the same.
Deep down, both of the drakes were outrage at this, with both of their ears folding. How could his own mother took his trust and security and smashed it into bits like that? It was just wrong to take out your anger and frustrations out on your own just because you were hurt.
Throughout the sobs, Justice tried his best to calm himself down. Eventually his voice stopped shaking to the point where he could utter something coherent. "I've--always--been--on--my--own." He explained punctuation each word with a breath. "But--I've--never--felt--so--alone..."
