Alternate Title: Be careful when writing a massive tonal shift. You may change your characters in ways you never intended. "It's... hotter than I would have thought it would be..." Nanami admitted, wiping the sweat from her forehead with her sleeve. At that point, her sleeve was so damp she wasn't sure what was soggier. Her boots sunk into the loose dirt with every step. She had nearly twisted her ankle several times now, so the girl took slower, more deliberate steps.
"Well did you think a freaking jungle would have air conditioning!?" A brown and pink bunny yelled out from in front of her. Her tiny body somehow trudged along at a pace the human girl found difficult to keep up with. Mocha turned back around to face her. "And it was your freaking idea to come out here in the first place! What, because of some flashing lights!?"
"My Digivice started glowing weird colors, and it kind of pointed in this direction!" She tried to explain again.
"Kind of!? You mean we've been traveling through this gross-ass jungle because you what... just had some kind of whim!?"
"It's instinct!" Nanami corrected, coming to a stop to stamp her foot on the ground. "My Digivice is the... thingy that links us together, right? So don't you think if it points to somewhere, we should at least go check it out?"
"I think if your stupid toy starts flashing weird colors, then you should smack it until it starts working right," Mocha replied with a growl. "Or at least ignore it if it's leading us through a freaking jungle!" She pointed behind Nanami, to the Terriermon trailing behind them. "Just look at Cream!"
"No thank you... I'm in indoor-Terriermon from now on..." She mumbled to no one in particular. Her ears dragged across the ground as she walked behind the pair with her head down. She didn't notice that Nanami had stopped walking and bumped into Nanami's legs, falling down on her back.
"Cream! Are you okay!?" Nanami scooped up the exhausted Terriermon in her arms. "Do you want to me to carry you for a while?"
Cream gave her human partner a blank stare, feeling the dampness of Nanami's body slowly soak into her fur. She sniffed the air a couple of times before shaking her head. "I'd rather you not."
"I s-see..." Nanami replied, giving a nervous chuckle. She didn't think she wanted to think about what the Terriermon could have possibly gotten a whiff of. She gently set her Digimon partner down on her feet and slowly started moving forward once again, at a pace the sluggish Terriermon could keep up with.
"So what's your useless little lightshow-device telling you now?" Mocha asked, having gotten bored of just walking.
"I think we're getting close!" Nanami assured her, pulling out her Digivice. It displayed no such light show at this time. "In fact, I just know it!"
"Is it because of in-"
"It's instinct!" She added with emphasis.
"Hey... is 'instinct' just Stupid Nanami talk for 'you have no idea'!?" Mocha questioned near-hysterically
"Instinct is instinct!" Nanami insisted. "I just know it, okay? Don't you ever get a feeling for this stuff, sometimes?"
"Yeah, right now I've got a feeling for stuff like wet fur and sore paws!" The Lopmon shouted back. "We should go back to Whitewater! Do you know how many dangerous Digimon are roaming around this area?"
"Is that so? If it's so dangerous, why are you walking off in front?" Nanami retorted in disbelief.
The Lopmon looked taken aback as her face reddened. "That's because I made I made a promise, Stupid Nanami!" She turned around and started moving ahead even faster, moving out of sight.
Nanami had to pause for a second to remember what Mocha said. Was it... that thing she said when they were back in the human world?
Me, Cream, and you! We're all in this together! So I don't care if you gotta heart as dumb as you are, or if a giant Digimon wants to eat you for breakfast! We're not gonna let you die, so stop thinking about stupid stuff like that!
Nanami couldn't help but smile to herself. So Mocha really wasn't just trying to convince her to come to the Digital World. "H-hey! Mocha, wait fo-" Nanami was cut off by the loud sound of Mocha screaming in agony. "Mocha!" She was about to rush forward, but a weight suddenly forced itself onto her shoulder.
"Nanami, be careful..." Cream advised, whispering into the girl's ear. "I can sense another Digimon nearby."

"There's another Digimon!?" Nanami gasped at the Terriermon on her shoulder, barely able to contain her voice to a whisper. "Then we need to see if Mocha's..."
"Listen for a second," Cream responded, remaining silent. Nanami focused, but didn't hear a reply.
"I don't hear anything..."
"Exactly. Don't you think Mocha would still be shouting about now if she were still conscious?" The Terriermon reasoned. "If she got taken out so easily... then we could easily end up just the same," Nanami felt a sudden pain in her shoulder. Her small paws were grasping onto her so hard she they were pinching the girl. It was obvious that she wanted to run to her sister's side.
"We still need to see if Mocha is alright!" Nanami turned her head to meet the Terriermon's eyes. "I know Mocha will be fine if we're there to help her!"
Cream stared back, finally relenting with a nod. "Move ahead as slowly and quietly as you can. I'll stay on your shoulder and keep a lookout." Nanami nodded in affirmation before taking step after painstakingly slow step towards the direction Mocha ran off. She could feel Cream's ear brushing against her face as the Terriermon turned her head from side to side, scanning the environment.
Nanami's mind couldn't help but wander as they moved ever so slowly. Was Mocha alright? Were there really dangerous Digimon out to get them? Why would they attack them in the first place? Was it because... they looked weak? Was it because Nanami was a human? She tried to think of something - anything else in order to get her mind set straight, but realized it was futile effort. Mocha told her that the Digital World was a dangerous place, but still went with her partners.
And all three of them might be paying the price.
After what seemed like an eternity, the pair saw a familiar figure lying face-down on the ground. A small, brown and pink beast Digimon. Surrounding her were several sharp-looking daggers sticking out of the ground, oddly shaped like feathers. "Mo-mph!" Cream's large ear covered her mouth.
"Stay quiet..." Cream warned. "We're being watched, but I think they're trying to lure us to Mocha," Nanami tried to look for anything out of place, but didn't even come close to noticing it. Cream pointed ahead of the pair. "See that fallen branch four feet ahead of us? I want you to quietly walk up and snap it with your foot. Then, I want you to duck for cover as soon as you can. Are you up for that?" Nanami blinked a couple of times in an attempt to hide the fear from her eyes, but she couldn't stop herself from shaking. She just nodded, hoping that she would be up for the task. She slowly took several strides, her eyes focusing solely on the branch. The end seemed suspiciously cut off, as if it was sliced and placed there intentionally. This meant... that it was a trap, right? Why would Cream want to intentionally set it off? Still... Cream seemed confident enough. And they were partners, after all.
She took a deep breath. Her legs were shaking, but she lifted one boot over the conspicuously-placed branch.
She closed her eyes.
She felt Cream adjust her weight, as if preparing to make a move.
She swallowed a gulp of air, praying that her fears would go along with it.
She stomped down onto the branch, snapping it with a resounding crack that echoed throughout the treetops. Word Count: 589 + 766 = 1355/3000

After that, everything seemed to happen at once.
Leaves shook from a sudden movement in a nearby tree. She heard the whistling sound as several sharp objects went flying towards her. More feather-dagger. She felt a sudden jerk from her shoulder as she saw Cream jump off from her, right into the path of the blades. The ground suddenly got closer as Nanami felt her legs give way as she fell to her knees. She watched Cream move around in midair, letting the feathers fly past her small body and straight towards Nanami. Ironically, due to the failure of her trembling legs the daggers flew past her, the closest of which flew straight through her hair, letting loose pink strands from her head. Nanami watched as a shadowy figure leapt from the tree, soaring through the air in attempt to secure a new hiding place.
But Cream wasn't willing to let that happen.
"Blazing Fire!" She cried out, taking in a deep breath and letting out a scorching burst of heated air at the shadowy creature. The shadow threw out an arm to block the attack, but let out a screech of agony as the heat seared through the feathers on its arm. It fell out of the air, tumbling into the ground below, managing to roll and plant its talon feet into the ground. It held its burnt arm as scorched plumage trickled down around it.
Nanami thought the creature looked similar to Hawkeye, Kaya's partner Digimon, but the only similarities between them were their bird-like appearance. It had black feathers and wore a violet top covering its torso, its chest covered in a fishnet design. It glared at Cream with its round, yellow eyes, but still didn't say a word.
"We don't know why you're attacking us..." Cream announced, taking advantage of the lull in the action. "But we're not intending on causing you any trouble. Let us pass, and neither one of us has to get hurt."
Still, the bird creature remained silent.
"You aren't some mindless, wild Digimon if you're setting traps," Cream continued. "We're not going to get anything out of this other than a few injuries neither one of us wants. You really want to wear yourself out fighting a battle you could've avoided when you might need it in a battle you couldn't?"
Again, only silence. Nanami noticed the frustration on Cream's face. She turned to the bird Digimon's expressionless face. She glanced back to Mocha, and for a split second, saw the Lopmon stir.
"Mocha!" Nanami suddenly found strength again as she climbed back to her feet and rushed towards her fallen partner.
"Nanami!" The girl heard her Terriermon yell out from behind her. She noticed the wire in front of her, but wasn't able to stop in time. Her boot snapped the wire as she heard the whipping sound of a branch suddenly snapping back into place. And being propelled by the branch were five more feather-daggers the bird Digimon used. "Petite Twister!" The Terriermon suddenly flew within her view, placing herself between Nanami and the projectiles. She spun around in place, colliding with the sharp objects. Nanami saw three of them fly off harmlessly off of Cream's spinning body, but she had a horrifying feeling that the other two weren't going anywhere. She watched as Cream collapsed to the ground, a feather-dagger sticking out of her torso and left ear.
"Cream!" Nanami bent down to help the Terriermon back to her feet. "Not you, too!"
"Focus!" Cream shouted, clearly doing her best to stifle the suffering she was undergoing. Nanami looked back towards the bird Digimon as continued glaring at them with its cold expression, launching several more daggers at the trio. Cream braced herself for impact, but the human girl saw things a little more clearly.
Five daggers heading towards their direction. But judging by the direction they were being thrown in...
"I'm sorry, Cream!" Nanami blurted out as she planted her boot into Cream's side, punting the beast Digimon away. Without wasting any time, she collapsed to the ground once more, only this time it was intentional. She used the momentum of the fall to roll on top of Mocha's body. But that was it. That was all the girl was capable of.
Nanami's heroic actions were met with a searing agony unlike any she had ever felt before. All at the same time, she felt a white-hot burning sensation, followed up by an enormous pressure crushing a very small point in her shoulder. Then, the pain suddenly dulled down. She couldn't hear the rustling of the trees. She could barely notice Mocha's face giving her a wide-eyed stare. For a just a second, nothing felt real.
But then that second passed.
Nanami let out a horrendous shriek of agony as she felt the dagger stick out of her shoulder. After a second she managed to stifle the screams, but it only turned into sobbing as the tears rolled freely down her face. Her fingers were clenched into the dirt.
"N-Nanami...!" She heard Cream cry out in a weak voice. Nanami didn't have the sense of mind to look over towards the struggling Terriermon. Instead, she noticed the bird Digimon approach the trio. It held a single dagger in its hand, looking down at Nanami and giving her an approving nod. It raised its arm slowly, and then-
Then it received a brown bunny smacking it in its beak.
"Petite Twister!" Mocha shouted, leaping from underneath Nanami and smashing the surprised bird Digimon in its face. It dropped the dagger it was holding, but Mocha wasn't going to let it just drop onto the ground. She grabbed the dagger in midair slammed her weight into the bird's chest, knocking it down on its back, while the Lopmon held her new feather-dagger to the bird Digimon's throat.
"Did ya think I would have gone down that easily!?" Mocha asked the bird Digimon with a grin. There was a dagger sticking right out of her forehead, in between her three horns. "Sorry, but it's gonna take a little more than that to put a Digimon as awesome as me down!"
"M-Mocha!?" Nanami gasped through the pain, giving an incredulous glare towards the Lopmon.
"You couldn't even wait ten seconds for you to start bragging, could you?" Cream calmly walked up to her sister and the bird Digimon, plucking the daggers sticking out of her body, then reaching up to yank the dagger from her sister's forehead.
"Hey, that hurts, damn it!" The Lopmon shouted in protest, but the Terriermon simply pointed towards the bird Digimon. Mocha turned her attention towards the prone ninja bird.
"C-Cream, too!? But you were so hurt before... how-"
"Faked it," Cream responded. "Once I realized that Mocha was pretending to be knocked out, I figured that I'd might as well play along as well," She glanced over to Nanami's injury. "I was about to call it quits and go all out, but then... you kicked me. Took me by surprise."
"Stupid Nanami!" Mocha chided. "Digimon are tough! Unlike you humans! Seriously, you couldn't deal with a single feather sticking out of ya?"
"I took that 'feather' for you, you dumb... jerk!" The girl shot back. Insults weren't her strong-suit, let alone during times of great agony and shock such as this.
"Yeah, you did!" Mocha retorted, giving the girl a nod without looking back.
"That means 'thank you'," Cream explained.
"Cream! Could you not right now!?" The Lopmon pressed the dagger into the feathered Digimon's neck. "We've got to have a little chat with our new buddy right about now, don't ya think?" Word Count: 1278 + 1355 = 2710/3000

Even though Mocha held the blade to the bird Digimon's throat, it didn't make a sound. After a hot minute passed, Mocha cleared her throat once more. "Ahem! I said... We've got to have a chat!" She glared daggers at the enemy Digimon, but the trio's foe remained entirely nonplussed. "Why aren't you saying anything, dammit!?" In a fit a childish rage Mocha jabbed the dagger half and inch. The bird Digimon let out a groan of pain, but save for a momentary wince of pain it didn't change its expression.
"Maybe... it... doesn't know... how to talk...?" Nanami wondered out loud through gritted teeth. She had hoped the pain would have lessened, but with the action having ended it instead seemed to be getting worse.
"Doubtful," Cream shook her head. "Most Digimon are capable of speech. If it's intelligent to set up traps..."
"Then hurry up and say something, already!" The frustrated Lopmon threatened to stick the feather-dagger deeper into the bird Digimon's neck.
"That's... enough, Mocha!" Nanami protested, letting out a yelp of pain as she stood up. It felt like any movement the girl made exacerbated her pain. She stepped over the prone Digimon, trying her best to hold in the tears. "We don't want to fight anymore, Mr. Bird...mon. Can't you tell us why you attacked us? We didn't want to fight anyone. We were just... looking for something..." A light shone out from her pocket as she finished her statement. Nanami pulled out her Digivice to see it radiating a red and green light.
"Ah, it's doing the thing again," Cream looked up to the glowing Digivice before turning her attention back to their foe.
"Then fix that stupid piece of junk, already!" Mocha cried out. "It's the reason we're in this stupid mess in the first place!" She turned her head to shout at her partner, and was caught off guard from the bird Digimon's sudden motion. The feathered Digimon thrust its hand out, shoving the small Lopmon off of its body. As the brown bunny was sent away, it swiped the feather dagger from her hands with one quick arm motion and pointed it towards Nanami. Cream immediately jumped in front of her human partner.
"That cursed light... why do you possess such a thing!?" The bird creature finally spoke out. It sounded surprisingly young and feminine, and oddly concise despite speaking from a beak. Though, Nanami supposed, she didn't recall Hawkeye sounding strange, either.
"Wait, you could actually talk this entire time!?" Mocha shouted, standing up after being pushed down. "You've got a lot of nerve, staying silent before n-" Mocha's threats were cut short when Cream nudged her sister with a stiff paw to the belly.
"If you have questions, that means we have something to talk about," Cream stated. "What do you know about this light? If you answer our questions, we'll be willing to answer yours."
"That is not how it works!" The bird Digimon exclaimed, raising up her dagger while keeping the arm burnt by Cream's earlier attack by her side. "I shall ask the questions, then you will leave this place!"
Cream's mouth formed an unusual smile. "Deal."
"What...?" The bird Digimon gave a nearly stunned expression.
"Deal," Cream repeated. "We weren't looking for a fight in the first place. If all you wanted was us to leave, then we probably would have done so without any struggle. Well..." Cream looked over towards Mocha, watching the impatient Lopmon grind her teeth as she was no doubt debating whether to attack their for while she was distracted. "There would have been a little struggle on our end."
The bird Digimon gave the Terriermon a confused stare, but nodded nonetheless. "Very well, then I repeat my fi-"
"Wait!" Nanami interrupted, clasping her wounded shoulder. "My name's Nanami! And these are my partners, Mocha..." She gestured to the impatient Lopmon, then pointed to the beige bunny. "And that's Cream! What's your name?"
"Why are you bothering this kinda crap right now!?" Mocha demanded, half-ready to strike at the bird Digimon.
"Because if we're gonna have a talk, we should at least know each other's names, don't you think?"
"Mukuroyukihime."
"Mook-a-yucky-what-now?"
"Mukuroyukihime," The feathered Digimon repeated. "Mukuroyukihime the Falcomon."
"Muku... That's kind of a mouthful... May I just call you Mu-kun, instead?"
"You may not."
"Why not!?" Mocha hissed. "Your name's way too damn annoying to say!"
"It is not."
"Then say it five times fast!"
"Mukuroyukihimemukuroyukihimemukuroko..." The Falcomon paused for an awkward second, then raised her sharpened feather and pointed it towards the group. "Silence! I shall be the one making the demands!"
"Don't try to fool us!" Mocha snapped back at Mukuyukumu. "We definitely heard that slip-up! Don't try to threaten us and pretend that it didn't happen!"
"Nanami the human!" Mokoroyoko ignored the Lopmon entirely. "Answer my previous question at once!"
"I don't remember your question!" Nanami declared with the same intensity as the Falcomon. "I was too busy trying to remember your name! You're very scary, and I don't want to get stabbed again!"
"We're not going anywhere with this..." Cream sighed. She tugged at Nanami's pants leg. "Mukuroyukihime wanted to know why your Digivice is glowing."
"The very same glow as the cursed Digimental that plagues this part of the jungle!" Mukuroyokozuna elaborated.
"A Digi...mental?" Seriously? Another word that began with "digi"? Nanami had the sinking feeling that she was never going to be able to remember all the Digital World terminology. She was about to ask another question when all of a sudden, she saw Cream, Mocha, and Muku... the Falcomon turn their heads in the same direction. Then she heard a groaning sound, followed by a cracking snap. Soon after that, she heard the sound of a tree crash down to the ground. Then she heard the same sounds again. And again, and again, each one louder than the last.
"If you do not leave this place soon..." The Falcomon warned. "You are going to find out far more than you could possibly wish for." Word Count: 1013 + 2710 = 3723/3000

Despite the Falcomon's rather ominous insistence that they escape, Nanami couldn't help but wonder what could possibly be so devastating that could make such a racket. Luckily, her partners seemed to have more since.
"What are you just standing around for, Stupid Nanami?" Mocha exclaimed. "You really want to hang around here any longer?"
"I agree. We haven't sustained much damage, but I would prefer to avoid another pointless fight," Cream added. Nanami had to blink for a minute. She had recently what may have been one of the worst pains of her life. And Cream and Mocha suffered the same injuries, but were just shrugging it off like it was nothing. What exactly were Digimon made of?
"You should listen to your companions," Mukurotohime advised. "If Ankylomon finds you then he will no doubt try to crush you all."
"Ankylomon...?"
"A Champion-level Digimon," Cream explained. "You know how when I was Gummymon I was even weaker than I am now?" Nanami nodded. Cream and Mocha couldn't do much but blow bubbles when they were in their previous forms. "Well, a Champion-level Digimon makes us look about as weak as we were then. If one of those Digimon had the presence of mind to see us dead, there wouldn't be much we can do about it."
"Which is why we should be getting out of here!" Mocha exclaimed. "Stupid Nanami is so weak, she could barely take a Rookie-level Digimon's attack. If a Champion-level comes after us, she'll be flattened in an instant!"
Cream had to give her sister a stunned stare. "Mocha...?"
"What the hell are you starin' for!?"
"I-It's nothing!" She turned back to Nanami. "Nanami, it sounds like Ankylomon is getting close. We should leave right now."
"But what about Mu-kun?"
"Mukuroyukihime," The feathered Digimon insisted. "And I will remain here. There is a small village nearby that pays me to keep outsiders away. If Ankylomon rampages nearby, then that means I might be out of a job."
"Then you were attacking us to keep us away?" Nanami asked. "You could have just told us so from the start!"
"My skills were getting dull, and you all looked like easy targets."
"That's so not an excuse!" Nanami lectured. "If you want train, don't do it by attacking othe-"
"It comes!" Mukuruyukihimu blurted out. "Leave, now!"
Nanami realized that she hadn't heard any more fallen trees for a few minutes. She turned towards the direction of where she used to hear sound, only to see something she could not have possibly imagined.
Every Digimon until now had been relatively small. Like some kind of sports or brand mascot. Even cute to some extent. But this creature was truly deserving of the title, Digital Monster. The beast was massive; even standing on four legs it was nearly as tall as the trees it stood behind. Nanami thought she saw something in picture books full of dinosaurs. It was bulky as well, surrounded in a yellowish scaly armor. Several spikes protruded from all over its body. More importantly, there were several large, jagged blades sticking out in random places. Where the blades stuck out, there were cracks and tears in its armored hide. Unlike the spikes which looked like they were placed by some sort of grand design, the blades looked like someone had used a pincushion to hold a set of steak knives. It glared at the much smaller creatures through the few trees it didn't knock over.
"Cream... doesn't something seem off about that Digimon?" Mocha suddenly blurted out. "Maybe I don't remember things so well, but Ankylomon isn't supposed to be looking that... jagged!"
"Yeah. Ankylomon is typically less... ferocious than that..."
"He was," Murokuhimeyuki commented. "He used to be a friendly, docile Digimon. But the power of the Digimental somehow corrupted him. Now he just roams the jungle, mindlessly attacking anyone he notices."
"Digimental... you said that word before!" Nanami stated. "What the heck is a Digimental? It corrupts Digimon, and it's apparently the same kind of light that's coming from my Digivice!" She held up her Digivice once again to reveal the glowing red and green lights once again. But the Falcomon wasn't the only one witness.
Suddenly, the Ankylomon let out a pained roar as it suddenly swung its body around. A massive spiked and bladed club on the end of its tail suddenly whipped around and crashed into the trees in front of it. After a single swipe, three trees plummeted to the ground, sending a flurry of leaves and bark that reached even Nanami. She put her arm in front of her face to cover her eyes, but still felt her hair fly back from the force of the single swing.
"Nanami the human! Cream the Terriermon!" The Falcomon barked. "Leave now!"
"What about me?" Mocha protested, but Mukurumu didn't seem to notice. Instead it made a dash behind a nearby tree. Meanwhile, the bestial dinosaur Digimon had nothing in between itself and the trio, and thus began its charge.
"Cream! Mocha! What are we supposed to do now!?" Nanami clutched the Digivice to her chest. It was supposed to help the girl and her Digimon partners... but how was this device supposed to help against such a large beast!?
"Stupid Nanami! There's only one thing we can do; RUN!" Word Count: 888 + 3723 = 4611/3000

Nanami found out very quickly that running with a stab wound probably wasn't the brightest of ideas. Her heart, adrenaline, her everything was going at about eleventy-billion miles per hour, the only reason the girl wasn't screaming in pain at the moment was because her voice-box was currently being occupied by her fears.
Though, she supposed, she had to hand it to the Digital World. Nanami expected many things to happen in the Digital World. Meeting strange creatures, discovering amazing locales, making new friends... but being chased through the jungle by a dinosaur covered in spikes and jagged blades after getting stabbed by an owl ninja? If no one had ever told her how terrifying and painful this was, she'd have jumped at the chance to live in this world.
Nanami also discovered something new as well. Turns out, running full-speed through a jungle is a terrible idea. Between the wildlife getting caught around her feet, the loose dirt she was constantly stumbling her way through, and avoiding the trees that just seemed to jump right in front of the girl it was a wonder that the fleeing girl could get very far at all. But fear is an excellent motivator, and every time Nanami hit a tree or tripped in the dirt she was able to pick herself up off the ground and get moving once again.
She never need to look behind her. She could hear the screams of rage the large beast bellowed every few seconds, followed by the sound of it smashing another tree in its way. If it weren't for the massive Ankylomon's need to deforest its path it would have no doubt caught up to exhausted human girl by now.
Nanami ran until she couldn't run anymore. She didn't run in any particular direction; she just found herself running to where her instincts told her to. Her chest burned and tightened and she couldn't get any air. She felt grass and dirt pressing against her face. Her breaths were shallow gasps as she suddenly found herself lying on the ground without knowing how she fell over, or for how long. All she knew was that she didn't hear the sound of breaking trees anymore. She lifted her face from the dirt to see the reason why.
There weren't any more trees nearby. The girl had somehow stumbled her way into a clearing. She could hear the deep, earth-quivering bass of the Ankylomon's footsteps approaching her. She slid her knees further up to put them between herself and the ground. Careful not to put weight onto her injured shoulder, she pushed herself upwards with all her strength, managing to make it back on her feet. She slowly started to stagger her way across the clearing. Barring the one behind her, the closest treeline was maybe only thirty meters away.
Twenty-five meters. Her weary legs were shaking as she moved. She heard a roar from behind her.
Twenty meters. Her vision blurred as the delay between the Ankylmon's massive footsteps shortened.
Fifteen meters. The culmination of Nanami's journey thus far had taken its toll on her. Her exhausting trek through the warm jungle. The injury she received from Kuromuhimeyuki. Her harrowing run from frightening beast. Her legs gave out once more as she fell to her knees. Nanami wanted to scream in terror and to cry in despair, but found that she was too tired to do so.
This was... all she could do. The only adventure this girl was going to have was a short trek through a jungle. The footsteps slowed to a halt as she didn't even bother to turn around to look at the beast. It turned out she didn't need to. The Ankylomon simply circled around the little girl as she saw the land beneath its feet sink down deep into the dirt. Soon, the beast was staring down at the little girl, or rather, the light shining from the Digivice in her pocket. She absentmindedly pulled out the Digivice for the dinosaur Digimon to see.
The Ankylomon's red eyes were bloodshot and looked far too wide to be natural; almost like it was afflicted by some kind of madness, but for a brief glimpse, the mesmerized eyes gazing upon her Digivice's light seemed to have some form of sanity to them. The Ankylomon's face moved mere centimetres from Nanami, and its mouth opened up once more. Nanami expected to get eaten or at the very least another roar, but instead, a pained, agonized voice came out.
"P-please... help m-me..." The Ankylomon pleaded, its massive form still making its very breath blow the little girls hair back. Her eyes widened in shock and confusion. Help this massive dinosaur? She examined it once more. Now that it wasn't chasing her or destroying trees, the little girl thought she understood.
Cream and Mocha had mentioned something like it before, but those jagged blades sticking out of its form... didn't look like they belonged. The points where the blades protruded from cracked its carapace. The beast was constantly shivering, and scales fell from its body whenever shook a little too hard.
Murakumohime also noted that the Digimental... whatever that was, had corrupted it somehow. That it used to be nice. The Falcomon had also mentioned that her Digivice somehow gave off the same light as the Digimental. Was that why the beast had been chasing her? It wasn't trying to kill her, but... it wanted her help? For some silly reason, all of a sudden Nanami felt guilty for running away and making the Ankylomon chase after her. Running with those blades sticking out of it... it couldn't have been easy. Was that why it was also knocking down all the trees? So the blades wouldn't keep getting jammed and caught up in them? Nanami realized she had no idea how this Ankylomon felt. Once more, she gulped away her fears and anxieties before speaking.
"Okay... but... can you tell how I c-"
"NANAMIIIII!!!" Nanami heard Mocha's voice shout from the treeline behind her. She turned her head around to see Cream swinging from tree to tree with her ears, holding her Lopmon sister with her arms. When they passed the treeline, Cream swung as high and far as she could. Mocha and Cream clasped ears then, and then the Terriermon swung the Lopmon as far forward as she could. "Blazing Ice!!!" Mocha shot out a breath of freezing cold air right into the Ankylomon's eyes before tumbling onto the ground next to her human partner. Ankylomon suddenly reared its head back from the pain, stepping back and trying to shake the frost from its eyes.
"Mocha, what are you do-"
"Stupid Nanami! Look at my legs!" She gestured with her short, stubby limbs. "We can't run as fast as you can, dammit!"
"No, you don't understa-" Nanami tried to explain things to the Lopmon but she clearly wasn't having any of it.
"What are you waiting for? Get back up and keep running!" Mocha moved in front of Nanami in an attempt to guard her human partner, but turned back around when Nanami made no such move.
"You're not listening to what I-" Instead of listening, Mocha moved up and started pushing on Nanami's leg in attempt to get her to move. "Mocha, just listen!" Nanami used what weight she could move forward and shoved the Lopmon down on her back. Unable to support herself she ended up pressing the bulk onto the Lopmon placed directly below her hand.
"Ugh... Nanami...?" Mocha managed to choke out as she gave the human girl a wide-eyed stare. She was struggling underneath the girls hand shoved directly on top of the Lopmon's throat. At that point Cream had caught up to the pair, and in a swift motion slapped Nanami's arm aside with her ear. Nanami lost her balance and her torso hit the ground as she watched the Terriermon help her sister to her feet.
"Explain, immediately," The Terriermon demanded with an icy glare.
"Ankylomon wasn't trying to attack me, he was trying to talk to me!" Nanami explained as quickly as she could. "I think those blades sticking out of him are hurting him, and he wa-"
"I see. Then he has a weak point, then." From the shadows of the jungle, a familiar Falcomon came into view. She covered the fifteen meters in an instant, sending a volley of feather-kunai towards the Ankylomon. Or rather, the blades on its shell. They struck true but bounced off immediately, not even causing a scratch. However, the impact caused the blades to reverberate, and the Ankylomon froze up in pain.
"What are you doing, Muk-"
"Protecting the village," She answered without even waiting for Nanami to finish. "The fact remains that this Ankylomon is dangerous, and being able to subdue and execute him would make my job much easier!"
"But you don't understand..."
"Cream the Terriermon... and the other one! Assist me in finishing off this beast!"
"Is that seriously what you're going to call me!?" Mocha shot back, but stood beside the Falcomon. "Whatever! If Stupid Nanami can't move right now, then we have no choice but to bring this thing down! Cream, let's go!" Cream didn't say a word, but stood beside her sister.
"No! You can't attack it anymore! Can't you see that it just needs some help?" Nanami protested, wanting to stand up and grab the Falcomon, but not finding the strength.
"The best help we can offer it is to give this Digimon a new start in life!"
"What's that supposed to even me-" Ankylomon recovered from Mukurokurome's assault and let out another roar of rage and pain. Whatever sense it had before no longer remained. It suddenly spun around in an instant, swiping its tail hammer at the group. Cream and Mocha suddenly jumped in front of Nanami, sharing the impact of the blow, while the Falcomon tried to jump out of the way, only to get hit in the air and sent flying backwards. It seemed that the Murumuruyumo was the primary target. Even so, the attack definitely left an impact with the twin bunnies. The pair flew straight into Nanami, sending the girl sprawling backwards while Cream and Mocha were sent flying off in two different directions.
Nanami stopped rolling, and the Falcomon finally landed near the human girl. Her head was spinning from the force that she didn't even feel directly, but she saw the Ankylomon suddenly leap high into the air, casting a massive shadow on top of Nanami and Mukurohiyukime. The bird Digimon seemed a little too dazed to notice the attack, however. If no one did anything, the two would get crushed. Nanami stood against gravity once more, finding purchase with her legs.
Nanami didn't know where she found the strength. It's not like she was in any less pain, or any more energetic than before. Was it just her survival instincts kicking in? That... couldn't be the case.
Because otherwise she wouldn't have dragged the avian Digimon with her as she made a mad dash to escape from Ankylomon's slam. They were only centimetres away when the dinosaur Digimon's massive form crashed into the earth. Nanami watched as the Ankylomon's bulky body sink deeper into the ground. And deeper.
And even deeper.
The earth beneath Ankylomon began to crack and collapse. The shattered earth began to spread further and further out into the clearing, and despite Nanami's newfound strength, the girl couldn't outrun the very ground she stood up collapsing beneath her. The Falcomon was still dazed, so Nanami grabbed onto her tightly as she began to fall. But a brown ear with a pink tip suddenly reached out to her.
"Grab on!" Nanami heard Mocha yell out. Her other ear was holding onto Cream's ear, who was holding onto root hanging out of the still attached earth. Nanami reached out, but she shook from the waves of pain that flared up in her shoulder. Her hand missed the Lopmon's ear, as she and the bird Digimon plummeted into the darkness below.

She had no idea how long she had been out. Or even how she survived. Laying on her back, all that she knew was that her entire body was in pain. Nanami opened her eyes and for a second, thought something was wrong with them. But no, she just wasn't able to see very well. Well, she fell underground, and the only light was the faint trickle of the shining sun. She tried to listen in for any kind of sound at all, but couldn't hear anything. She had hoped to hear Cream or Mocha screaming for her. But there was only silence. Had she been unconscious for so long that they just gave up?
The child's mind began to chain together her assumptions once more. If they gave up, that meant they probably left, right? So did they leave to go get help from somewhere, or did they just assume she was dead and abandon her? But then... would they be okay if they were all alone in this dangerous jungle? While she was making these foolish assumptions, her eyes adjusted to the low-light setting. There were rocks and massive clumps of rock all around her; most likely debris from the shattered ground. The girl was surprised that she hadn't gotten buried underneath all the rubble.
Much like the Ankylomon in front of her. She gasped when she finally noticed the massive Digimon underneath the mountain of stone and earth. Several of its blades had shattered and were sticking out of the ground now. Bits and chunks of the Digimon's shell also lay strewn about the floor. Curiously enough, those pieces that fell off from Ankylomon seemed to shimmer and become static-like.
"It may take some more time before those pieces dissipate into pure data," She heard a voice off to the side warn her. Nanami turned her head to see the Falcomon approaching her, not making a sound despite all the loose rubble around. While she was still clutching her burned arm, in her feathery hand was unmistakably Nanami's Digivice. "I know admittedly little about you humans, but I believe you humans require this device to survive in the Digital World, correct? You would be wise not to drop it so freely."
"Mu-" Nanami's voice was dry and strained and she found it difficult to talk.
"Though had you focused on keeping this device safe instead protecting me, then I suppose I would no longer be here anymore. Given our current set of circumstances, locating your Digivice was the only way I could display my gratitude." The bird Digimon bent down and gently placed her Digivice back in Nanami's hand. As she did so, the device flared with green and red light once more.
As did another source far away.
"The Digimental!" The Falcomon growled in disgust. "But it reacted when that device touched your hand... that means that you are..." Suddenly it whipped out a feather-kunai and pointed it towards the prone girl.
"Th-that can't be right...!" Nanami pleaded with a hoarse voice. "I've only been in the Digital World for a couple days! Even if my Digivice did cause this, then there's no way it could've done that to Ankylomon!" It pained her to do so, but she lifted her arm up and with a shaking hand, she pointed towards the fallen Champion-level.
"Perhaps," The Falcomon admitted. "Ankylomon suddenly changed nearly two months ago..."
"And I only had my Digivice for about a week before I got here! I couldn't have caused this!" Nanami reasoned. She remembered Ankylomon's plea as she looked at her Digivice. "But I think I can stop it! But I need your help to get me closer!"
Murokuyuhiki gave the girl a skeptical glare. "And why would you think this?"
All Nanami could do was shrug and offer a weak smile. "It's just... instinct." Word Count: 642 + 6630 = 7272/3000

Between Mikuruyukihime's burnt arm and Nanami's injured shoulder, making their way across the underground cavern was a slow, painful journey. Nanami no longer had the strength to walk on her own, so she had to lean onto the Falcomon's arm as the bird Digimon guided the girl towards the dual-colored Digimental.
"Hey, Mu-kun... What is a Digimental, anyway?" Nanami asked as they made their way.
"My name is..." The Falcomon sighed before continuing. "They are ancient artifacts that let some Digimon access new forms, by somehow channeling core virtues into power."
"That's that... Digivolving thing, right...?" Nanami thought she was finally starting to get all the Digi-terminology.
"Yes. But they are very rare, and they only grant their power to those they deem worthy..." The Falcomon shook her head for a second as if in disbelief. "If it is as your 'instincts' claim, then perhaps you are worthy, But you will find that this particular Digimental is... well... you will see when we get there..."
"Mu-kun...?" The Falcomon remained silent until they arrived in front of a stone pedestal. It was made out of some different kind of stone than the earth around it, and it seemed intentionally carved to hold...
Some kind of grotesque sphere, covered in small barbs. Red and green in color, it looked like two objects had been pressed and warped together. Red and green tendrils had grown out of the orb, entwining in an ugly spiral that looked like it was trying to escape the sphere.
"That's... that's the Digimental!?" Nanami had to gasp. She wasn't sure what she was expecting, but she figured that the object that led her to this point would have been... more visually pleasant.
"Yes," Mu-kun confirmed. "Or rather, two specific Digimentals that have merged together. The Digimentals of Serenity and Ambition."
"Serenity and... ambition...?"
"Serenity is to be calm and accept your surroundings. Meanwhile, Ambition is the desire to change or improve them. They are contradictory with one another. I believe... that is what caused Ankylomon to change somehow..."
"So... if we can get rid of this somehow, then Ankylomon can go back to normal?" Nanami grasped her Digivice as she turned to Mu-kun, but the Falcomon continued glaring at the abhorrent Digimental.
"Perhaps, but I cannot tell you for sure," The avian Digimon admitted. She turned to meet the human girl's gaze. "How do you intend to remove this Digimental?"
Nanami hadn't really thought that far ahead, if at all. After remaining silent for a minute, she raised her Digivice up to the glowing Digimental. Both gave off the same green and red lights, yet other than a display of impressive lighting, nothing happened. "Darn... I really thought that would work..." She admitted. She tried reaching out even closer to it, but both Nanami and Mu-kun suddenly felt the earth beneath them tremble, and the sound of falling rocks from behind. Before the pair could even finish turning around, they heard the deep bass of the Ankylomon's angry growl resonate through the entire cavern, forcing Nanami's very bones to quiver and ache.
But its growls were nothing compared to the roar it let out afterward. Dust and dirt erupted from its body as it began to shake off the debris that had collapsed on top of it. Despite its mighty bellow, Nanami could see that the fall and the rocks had taken their toll. It looked like kind of like... some kind of unfinished computer graphic. Where pieces of its hide had broken off, what looked like some kind of fluid circuitry was flowing underneath.
"It is on its last legs..." Mu-kun observed, trying to gently set the human girl down as it brandished a feather-kunai with its one good arm. "But..." Nanami could see the Falcomon shaking where she stood. It seemed that after their fight and the attack Mu-kun took from Ankylomon earlier, she had hit her limit as well. The Falcomon fell to her knees, unable to stay standing. Both Mu-kun and Nanami could only watch in helpless horror as the Ankylomon moved its head around in an attempt to gauge its surroundings, and its potential prey. Word Count: 692 + 7232 = 7924/3000

It didn't take long for the Ankylomon to locate the two. They were near the greatest source of light in the cavern, after all. "Mu-kun, you should try to get away! I'm going to try and find a way to-" Suddenly, Nanami was interrupted by the echo of two high-pitched screams getting louder and louder. Nanami looked up to see two small figures falling towards where Nanami had previously landed.
"Blazing Ice!!!" Nanami heard Mocha shout out. She saw the Lopmon send out a blast of cold air right into the Ankylomon's exposed weak area on its shell. Ankylomon let out a surprised yelp of anguish as the bunny Digimon's diving sneak attack succeeded. Then, Mocha's ears suddenly expanded as she began to float harmlessly to the ground. "How's that, ya overgrown, edgy turtle!?" She proceeded to turn around and slap her behind in midair.
"What is the brown one up to?" Nanami heard Mu-kun comment. "She's far too vulnerable if she keeps floating down so slow..." Mu-kun and Nanami looked above the Lopmon, to see a Terriermon floating down with her ears several meters above her sister.
Ankylomon responded to Mocha's taunt by standing on its two hind legs and reaching up for the Lopmon with its front claws. At that point, Cream's ears went limp as she began to quickly plummet to the ground. "Blazing Fire!!!" She let loose a blast of scorching hot air directly into the distracted Ankylomon's face. The dinosaur Digimon suddenly clutched its face with its two front legs, staggering back while standing on its hind legs. "Mocha!" Cream shouted while still falling down, reaching out with her ears towards her sister.
"I gotcha!" Mocha used her paws to grab onto her sister's ear, the momentum of the fall forcing the siblings to suddenly spin out of control. Or at least, that's what Nanami thought. The two began to spin even faster and faster until the two Digimon blended into a single Digimon twister.
"Double Typhoon!!!" The twins suddenly launched themselves straight towards the still struggling Ankylomon. The twin-sister-twister connected with the gargantuan Digimon's exposed jaw, shoving the large Digimon's upper body even further back. It couldn't keep its balance as it suddenly fell backwards, falling onto its shell, and each of its remaining jagged blades.
The cracking of its shell and blades breaking apart were only dwarfed by the titanic Ankylomon's shrieks of anguish. Meanwhile, Mocha and Cream began tumbling to the ground as well. Whatever move that they pulled off together, it must have taken its toll on the twins.
"S-stupid Ankylomon!" Nanami heard her Lopmon partner exclaim in a woozy voice. "Not so... tough now... are ya...?"
"D-dizzy... gonna lie down for a bit..." Cream added, not-so-helpfully. The pair seemed motionless for the moment.
"Those two... they managed to take down a rampaging Ankylomon..." Mu-kun stated in disbelief. Nanami's face mirrored the Falcomon's expression. Of course she expected the dinosaur to be strong, but did those two silly bunnies really pack that much power? She had no idea that her partner Digimon were so... capable.
But unfortunately, they weren't capable enough. Ankylomon let out one final scream before suddenly jerking its body to the side. Its shell still seemed stuck to the earth beneath it, but after a groaned scream and a horrific ripping sound, the Ankylomon rolled over to its feet without its shell. That same liquid circuitry that covered bits and pieces of its body now covered its entire back, and Its entire being seemed to occasionally shimmer, as if its digital body couldn't handle the intense injuries that the massive Digimon kept sustaining. The pain on its face was apparent, but it wasn't focused on its own injuries. Its eyes were crystal clear; a blood-red murderous glare fixated upon Nanami's partners. Word Count: 633 + 7924 = 8557

Ankylomon spun around, dragging its heavy tail across the ground. It collided with the two defenseless bunnies, sending them flying backwards. They didn't even have the time to scream out before colliding with the wall and knocking the air out of the pair. For one comical second, the two Digimon remained plastered to the wall before tumbling back down to the ground, completely motionless.
"Mocha! Cream!" Nanami found herself shouting as loud as she could. She also found herself standing on her own two feet. She had no idea how standing could have helped her at this point, however. Her partners didn't seem to respond to their call. "Get up! Please, get up!" She tried to take a step forward, but her legs started shaking too much. There wasn't going to be any chance she could get to her partners in time.
Ankylomon didn't pay the screaming human girl any mind as it began to take slow, staggered steps towards the prone Lopmon and Terriermon. But it didn't matter how slow its steps were, or how injured the Champion-level Digimon was. It was the only one who could move now, and meant it had the right to decide who deserved its mercy. But now Nanami could move as well. And even though she was just a puny human girl, there was something that she had to be able to do, right?
Nanami took a quick glance around her feet until she saw something she liked. Reaching down, she lifted a rock slightly larger than her palm. "Look over here!" She screamed out, launching the stone with her good arm. The rock flew through the air... and didn't even make it to the dinosaur Digimon's feet before bouncing off the ground and rolling to a stop. Even her good arm ached at this point. The girl just didn't have the strength or stamina anymore. The Ankylomon took another staggered step forward, none the wiser to Nanami's desperation.
Her vain struggles began to take their toll on the girl as she found her legs buckling under her own weight once again. But she still had to try something. She turned towards the Falcomon near her.
"Mu-kun!" Nanami moved over and placed her hands on the Falcomon's shoulders. "You're really fast and sneaky, aren't you? Can't you run over there and help Mocha and Cream? You don't have to fight Ankylomon! Just get them to safety! Please!" Tears were starting to fall down the girl's face as the Falcomon looked up to her in near shock.
"You..."
"Please! I'll do anything! I don't have a lot of stuff on me, but I'll give you everything I have!" She was beginning to take shortened panicked breaths in between sobs. Her unintentional shivering began to shake the Falcomon. "I'll even learn how to say your name! I'll say it a thousand... a billion times if I have to! But please just save my friends!" The hysteric girl leaned her face in, simply sobbing into the bird Digimon's chest. Nanami's face felt the Falcomon begin to shake as well.
"I... there is nothing... I am sorry... If only I were stronger..." The feathered Digimon just remained there, quivering in her own weakness as well. They heard the resounding thud of another dreadful stomp. But there still had to be something Nanami could do! Wiping away her blurry tears she stared back at her glowing Digivice, the same light that came out of the Digimental. It was the reason for Ankylomon's change, wasn't it? She gazed once more at the warped Digimental covered in sharp, thorny barbs.
Without hesitation, she grasped it with both hands and pulled as hard as she could. This was supposed to be some sort of ancient force, or whatever. But it turned Ankylomon into some hideous monster that was constantly in pain. It was supposedly a representation of some kind of virtue or whatever. Ambition? Serenity? Opposing ideals? Nanami didn't give a damn what this stupid freaky egg was supposed to represent! She just wanted to travel this new world, go on adventures, and meet new people! Hell, she even ran away from home, for goodness sake! So if this thing was gonna get Mocha and Cream killed, she was gonna rip this abomination off this pedestal and smash this egg on the ground; even if it tore her hands apart!
And yet, the barbs did nothing to hurt her. In fact, they crumbled at her touch. The warped egg and its tendrils began to crumble like eggshells. And from its glowing remains floated two gemstones; a gorgeous glittery garnet and an ephemerally elegant emerald. Nanami's Digivice gave off a bright white light and when it faded, words appeared on its mall screen. And for some mysterious reason, Nanami knew what to do. She twirled around, ignoring the amazed Mu-kun and pointed her Digivice at her partners.
"Digimental Up! Armor... Evolution!" The stones suddenly shot out towards the Lopmon and Terriermon. Twin streaks of light that engulfed the pair in an instant. Each stone attached themselves to one of their ears.
Mocha's ears suddenly expanded in size. Her horns began to extend, and the fur on her ears, tail, and neck began to fluff out, resembling a dandelion fluff. A garnet remained safely attached to her left ear, enclosed in a golden band. "Lopmon-X!"
A similar experience occurred with Cream, but for the Terriermon, her fur didn't fluff up. Instead, it simply grew out and almost took a feathery appearance. A golden band covered the end of her right ear, with an emerald enclosed within. "Terriermon-X!"
While they still looked injured, their eyes suddenly opened as they began floating in the air. They looked around confused for a second, then looked at each other, then nodded. It was like they understood some secret communication that only they could hear.
"What is that transformation...?" Mu-kun exclaimed. "They look so similar to their previous forms, and yet..." But the Falcomon was cut off by the Ankylomon's roar. It seemed it wasn't particularly impressed by the sudden transformation. It swiped a claw at the pair, yet the pair moved instantaneously, simply floating backwards. The force of the Ankylomon's attack seemed to force the pair even further backwards, far out of the Champion-level's reach. At least, out of most of it's attacks. Crouching down, it suddenly leapt high up into the air once more, above the floating rabbit Digimon. It began to plummet down once more, ready to crash down on the newly-evolved sisters.
But unlike Nanami, a helpless human and Mukuroyukihime, a dazed Falcomon, the twins were willing to meet this attack head on. They clasped the ends of each other's ears, moving in close with one another. Their faces nearly touching, they leaned their heads forward so their horns connected. Then, they began to spin in place, spiraling upwards to meet the descending dinosaur.
"DOUBLE TYPHOON DRILL!!!" They shouted out in unison as bursts of ice and flame shot out from behind them, propelling them even faster. They struck the Ankylomon straight in the center of its chest, and as the Ankylomon crashed into the ground, Mocha and Cream maintained their ascension.
Ankylomon let out a series of coughs and gasps as its form began to slowly dissipate; almost like it was dust in the wind. "Th-than..." It didn't get to finish its sentence before it faded away.
Wordlessly, Mocha and Cream descended back down to Nanami and Mu-kun.
Nanami couldn't stop herself from letting out the tears she had stored up in the intensity of the battle. "You two! I'm so glad that you're... that you're..." She couldn't get a proper sentence out without sobbing. Suddenly Mocha floated over to the girl, placing her tiny paw on her cheek while giving the girl a gentle smile. She wiped her tears away for her before flying behind the girl and grabbing onto her back. After hearing a grunt of effort, she felt herself floating up out of the cavern, into the grassy jungle above. She looked to her side to see Cream lifting Mu-kun out as well.
After she touched the grassy ground, Nanami couldn't remember much after that. She vaguely recalled Mocha and Cream collapsing in exhaustion. "I'm sorry... Ankylomon..." She weakly muttered. She didn't want the big Digimon to die, after all. She had wanted to save it somehow, but found that she lacked the strength. She... didn't want that to happen anymore. She gave a weak glance to the Falcomon before collapsing herself. "And I'm sorry... Mu... ku... yo..."
She couldn't finish mispronouncing the Falcomon's name once more.
