Honoka couldn't sleep a wink. Honoka turned ten-years old today - and most likely for the rest of eternity - so today was going to be the beginning of her new adventure! As soon as her alarm went off she immediately chucked it across the room. It crashed into the wall, shattering into a thousand pieces!
Useless alarm - Don't go off if the person's already awake!
Beaming from the excitement the girl leapt out of bed and took off skipping down the stairs. It brought her to the kitchen, where her single father sat at the table, a cigarette between his fingers and his face glued to the television.
"Oh, you're off on your adventure, already?" He asked his daughter as soon as he noticed her. "I can't believe you're already ten years old now and ready to see the world. It seems like just yesterday tha-"
It was that point that Honoka realized that she had forgotten to set the text speed to "fast" so she just hurriedly moved her father's dialogue along before walking out the door.
"Oh, we're ignoring me now. That's fine... I guess. You're a grown woman now..."
Honoka didn't respond to the cardboard cutout, instead making her way north towards the tall grass. She was about to step into it before a voice called out to her.
"Don't go out there. Wild Digimon will attack you, knock you unconscious, then steal exactly half your money!" A strange old man appeared from behind the ten-year-old girl's house - something the girl found completely normal. His name was Professor Beech, and he hung around small children often. "Come to my lab! I'll give you a Digimon for your protection!" Without waiting, he led her further south to his lab, where Naoki, Honoka's rival since they were babies, was waiting.
"Gramps! I've been fed up with waiting!" Naoki lectured his grandfather.
"Shut up, strange boy who lives in my daughter's house!" The professor demanded before turning to Honoka. "Here! Select one of these three starter Digimon!" He released three balls and out from them three Digimon appeared.
"The first is Grass-type Floramon, the Flower-Lady Digimon. The internet is going to draw gratuitous fan-art of her final evolution."
"The second is Fire-type Coronamon, the Lion-Man Digimon. The internet is going to draw gratuitous fan-art of his final evolution."
"And the third is Water-type Otamamon, the tadpole Digimon. The internet is going to become obsessively attached to this form for no particular reason, then forget his evolution forms exist because he's objectively trash."
"But gramps, what about me-" Naoki was about to insist before getting smacked upside the head by Professor Beech.
"Shut up and don't talk to me when I'm explaining things to children I like better than you!" Beech warned his continual disappointment of a relative.
"Fine! Pick your starter Digimon, Honoka! I'll pick after you!" Honoka picked up the Floramon and immediately sent it back into its Digiball, not even bothering to give it a name.
"A Grass-type? You fool! You absolute ignoramus! I pick the Fire-type Coronamon!" He lifted the Digimon up and forcibly shoved it into its ball. After that, he pointed towards Honoka. "Now we use our Digimon to battle each other inside the laboratory! Because nothing could possibly go wrong!" He released the Coronamon while Honoka released her Floramon.
"You're having a battle? Then, Honoka, would you like me to explain how battles work, and the technique through scrolling through a menu and selecting words?" Honoka gave the professor a deadly glare before he backed off.
"You see, you idiotic rival of mine, I picked the Fire-type Coronamon because he has a natural type advantage against your Grass-type Floramon! Allow me to demonstrate! Coronamon, use tackle!"
The Coronamon ran up to the Floramon and just kinda hit her with his body.
Honoka pointed towards the Coronamon, instructing her to use Pound.
Floramon did so.
"What a powerful strategy!" Naoki praised his rival. "But try this! Coronamon, use growl!"
Coronamon suddenly let out a growl for some reason. It didn't seem to do much. Honoka pointed towards the Coronamon, instructing her to use Pound.
Floramon did so.
This went on for about five minutes before Coronamon took one last pound to the face before collapsing.
"But how did I lose!?" Naoki complained, recalling his defeated Coronamon. "I had a type advantage and everything!" But instead of saying anything, Honoka simply stuck out her hand. "Did... did you want something?" Honoka stormed over to her rival, grabbed him by the collar and lifted him up over her head with one hand. Then she used her other hand to reach into his pocket and take out a handful of money. She shoved the pocket change into her bag before chucking her rival out the door.
"Smell ya lateeeeeeer!" He screamed out as he vanished from existence.
"Congratulations, you defeated... umm... whoever that strange boy was!" Professor Beech praised with his arms wide open. "Now, a world of wonder and opportunities awaits you! Will you defeat the eight Gym Leaders and become the Digimon Master? Will you, a ten-year-old child defeat the evil organization, Team Bucket and literal freaking mafia? Will you set out on a journey to collect every single Digimon? You're so full of potential, Honoka! I'm excited to see what it is you're capable of!"
As Professor Beech was making this grand statement, Honoka had been silently walking around his lab, constantly bumping into the walls.
"Oh... you're just trying to glitch the game, aren't you?" Honoka nodded, returning to her thorough analysis of the lab's boundaries. Professor Beech could only sigh.
"Oh well. This Generation One of Digimon is completely overrated, anyway. Honoka! Stop ramming into everything in my lab! I'm just gonna take you to the Hall of Fame, okay?" Honoka nodded, following the professor.
And that was how in a single day, young Honoka became the Digimon Master.
