Section A-1 – Investigating the Town (Client - Rustport)

Post by Zachary "Zaber" Scryer on Jul 11, 2020 17:20:48 GMT
It seemed the question pertaining to him was still there, as it was odd to write about an 'industrialized' town made of machine Digimon. Zachary paused a bit but soon replied with a smile. "Well, when you're a visitor from another world, no place is not worth learning more about, right?" he countered the question with another question. Still it was not a lie as he did write stuff on NEXUS website to help people about the Digital World. Whether or not any of the folks here knew of NEXUS or could see the site themselves, that was another matter.
Soon they finally got down to it. The "elephant" in the room. It was brought up a bit, but the mention of an 'anchor' for the town seemed to make Zachary interested. And by extension, Panthermon who was hearing everything via Zachary from a distance. This was starting to get interesting as he would glance to Faustein, who was also keeping up the act too.
"Anchor to what, exactly?" Zachary spoke up, deciding not to hold back since it was a fair question. "You said it's an anchor and gives you respect. Exactly what is it attached to that you are so fond of?" It might have been a bit blunt, but now they were getting to the matter at hand, so the 'detective' in him wanted to get to see the BlackRapidmon's response.
Then something odd happened-- Zachary remembered something. Back in the Real World, he had encounter another creature. Another Rapidmon and before that a Gargomon of the same black variety. It was a long shot, but he couldn't help but step forward and ask. "Um, if I may ask, have you been to the real world before? YOu seem a bit... familiar?" he asked.
The Black Rapidmon during Golden Week, the one that caused mayhem-- it couldn't of been the same one, could it?
Meanwhile, the curious nature of the cat finally won out for Panthermon as he decided to investigate. Slowly, and making sure the cat was not noticed-- Panthermon prowled towards the area surrounding the tower. Even if he couldn't get too close, he intended to see what was going on around it and how other Digimon were there. Things were starting to get interesting, but they needed answers. If things were bad, the Panther Digimon could warn them all via his t telepathy.

Ugh. Everyone was talking like boring adults. Nobody was actually asking the questions they want, and any answers were dodgy at best. It's like it was some sort of social game where one tried to ask tangental questions in the hopes that they could....something. It was all so awkward, inefficient, and borderline malevolant.
So, instead of paying attention to all that, David was looking around at the workings of the town. Or at least whatever he could see from his vantage point with the current group. What areas had already been developed? What areas were currently receiving the most attention? Had anything already been completed? And, perhaps most importantly, what sorts of things were already built around the tower itself?
"The whole thing just appeared in an instant." Ziggy had noticed David's attention kept going back to the central structure. He spoke in a hushed tone that, hopefully, only David would hear. "There was a big explosion of light, and now that tower is on the exact spot." And from the sounds of the conversation, these machine digimon didn't build it, but instead chose it as a landmark to base a city around.
"So what's so important about it?" he bluntly inquired of the BlackRapidmon. The boy wasn't quite sure what the BlackRapidmon had meant by that word, "important", or how a tall building would demand respect from the other cities. He assumes the meaning of "anchor" is more metaphorical in that it's what brought everyone together, not literally like it's from some sort of skyship. That'd be silly. And yet, David finds himself squinting with hands doing their best to keep the sun out of his eyes and he looks skyward. Just how far did that tower stretch, anyway? And where is this elephant that was mentioned before? Everyone is searching for a world where they belong. A place of light, free of falsehood.

There was not much else to do but to wait for the BlackRapidmon to answer the barrage of questions that had been hurled at it by the members of the group. So, Faustein merely chose to wait and watch, and as he did he noticed that Zaber had apparently had a prior interaction with said BlackRapidmon or at least that was what it had seemed like from his last remark
Ah so all those rumors that were milling around during Golden Week were not rumors after all, and there were indeed Digimon roaming Shibuya and causing trouble. Well, that is one mystery solved and put to rest.
Faustein thought silently, but then the blunt way in which the youngest member of the group had asked about the importance of the giant tower around which the city had sprung up led to a wide eyed expression of consternation for a single split second in his eyes. However, the next split second it was gone and his impassive, inscrutable expression was back firmly dominant on his facial features.
This child obviously does not how to conduct himself during covert missions. Has he compromised our mission?
Faustein mused silently and then focused his attention on the BlackRapidmon so that he could take in as much detail from its response as possible. For the moment, he decided to stay quiet and not ask any questions of it, but merely listen and witness the events and the groups's conversation unfold as it may.

With all the extra comments and questions being asked, Agress took a moment to hold his questions. Though his stance was unchanged, no matter the question directed to the BlackRapidmon, Agress kept his sight trained on the Ultimate Digimon. The Mask donned on Agress covered most of his face and expressions, despite its concealing nature it was obvious he was intent on staring down the BlackRapidmon.
While Zaber asked his few questions, Agress slowly stepped forward till him and the BlackRapidmon were not even a meter apart. Attempting to be what the Ultimate had to keep an eye on as he stood in front of them. One of Agress’s hands started to give a rhythmic tapping against his leg, growing increasingly frustrated as the questions went on while looking up...
Once hearing what David said Agress couldn’t help but laugh as he chimed in. “Well, I am glad it is just out in the open! “
Agress moved close as he could to the BlackRapidmon, reaching one arm out towards their consultant. Given the height difference, Agress could barely reach up to grasp at the Rapidmon’s chest plate, getting a grip before giving a tug down. Agress’s intent wanting to have their conversation partner to lower down to a more level speaking position. Even if those actions didn’t have his desired effect, pulling at the BlackRapidmon’s chest plate, Agress wanted to the Digimon to know that these were serious questions.
“Since this is going more my preferred method, let us just get to the point. I may not know the other individuals here personally but we all are curious about your town, the city your building. Basically the Fortress.” Agress grasp didn’t release the BlackRapidmon’s plating.
He started to speak in a more stern tone, to speak clearly and directly to the in his grip. “ In your words, forgive me for being a bit blunt, this tower means you deserve some respect? Respect from your neighbors and kin is built with bonds of one another. The only ones who demand respect or crave it upon their first meeting probably want it out of fear. “
Agress paused in his speech to grin, the excited expression peering at the edges of his mask, tilting his head to the side as he snickered for a moment. “I know I would. Though calling the tower an anchor? That implies it has a function and use, not just to you but this entire operation.”
The almost instantaneous switch occurred where Agress gave that bright smile, a soft-spoken voice in an elegant tone. “Though we are your Guests here are we not? We are just asking questions, would be unfortunate for us to be treated so badly in front of your peers. The first customer is the stepping stone to a healthy business, now. Would you kindly answer our questions? No reason to dance around the subject.”

Was it really unreasonable to go directly for the point at hand, like Faustein thought? Or, would it have been more suspicious to not talk about the giant elephant in the room?
It was a careful line to walk, one that the four of them breached into at various levels. Faustein decided not to engage at all, Zachary brought it up in more of a cursory fashion, David asked directly, and Agress made it a point to seem like a full-on interrogation. Honestly, if anyone other than Agress were to have tried that method, the result would have been somewhat different - even the Starmon looked on with a raised brow as the culinarian dared raise a hand to a Digimon two stages above his own.
"... I see political opinions in the Dark Area are something talked about in a pretty naked fashion." At least, that's what the BlackRapidmon's immediate answer was to the wolf. His 'aggressive interrogation' was not met with violence, but with a gentle push with the side of his arm to put some distance between the BlackRapidmon and the Venermon. There was one question here that the BlackRapidmon didn't hesitate to answer, that being Zachary's:
"Hm? This world not real enough for you?" The BlackRapidmon was quick to fill in a chuckle afterwards. "But no, I haven't been to the 'human' world. There's enough to deal with on this side as it is."
"Hmph..." Was the cyborg dodging the topic overall, then? "Maybe if I phrase it another way: what are you allowed to tell us about the tower?"
"Yeah, I knew this was going to be a snag..." The Rapidmon gave a shrug. "By-in-large, its a communications device. But that's really about all I can say - now." The BlackRapidmon tried to push the topic 'back on track', at least from his perspective: "I understand you're here regarding relations with Rustport, right?"
"Right..." The Starmon gave a nod, shelving his own feelings on the matter for the moment. "My main question is, what is your stance in relation to the other towns? Simply put, setting up something like this is an admittance that ya'll ain't good with sticking with the existing cities. And as your closest neighbor, we just gotta make sure that we won't be stepping on each-other's toes."
"Ah, yes!" The cyborg seemed more willing to talk about the town in this light! "Well, we don't want to step on too many toes, but I'd say we're already running into a few issues running our own Trailmon - we had to cross over your tracks at a few points, of course..."
Well, it was a chance to get back on track. Was it worth pressing the narrative on the tower more, or was it better to just 'let it be' and see if they could help broker a deal between the two towns? Even if it was just lip service in the end?

Zachary felt a tension start to build in the air around them, partly due to the part that now everyone was now pointing at the elephant in the room to inquire about the tower. The kid in particular seemed somewhat blissfully ignorant to any sense of danger. His Betamon partner was trying to keep him under control but he was... failing a bit. For Zachary's sake and Faustein's as well, he hoped this BlackRapidmon was NOT the same one from the Golden Week. That one went bat-**** crazy and attacked people like a crazed beast without discrimination. The Blackrapidmon answered back with a somewhat sarcastic answer, of what was 'real'. Zachary's face skewed a bit in uncertainty at that response. If they wanted to go into philosophy of the different worlds, they would be there all day. Still when he got a clear answer he wasn't the same one, Zachary sighed with relief. He still had 'doubts' about the black bunny rabbit, but still, he had doubts of the nature of the machines here. For now, he kept focus on the young boy named David. Zachary drew closer to the boy and his Betamon, finally taking the time to talk to David Copeland . " Hey kid. Name's Zaber. Listen, you should be more mindful of what you say, okay? Some of the townsfolk here may get a bit offended if you blurt out certain things. So be mindful of what you say, okay buddy? " he asked, trying to be a responsible older figure for the younger boy. He turned t o the Betamon. " It must be tough being the partner to such a younger kid, huh?" he asked the aquatic Digimon. As the discussion came to relationships with other villages, Zachary paid attention and listened. " So, what exactly do you mean? Are you building your own tracks or trying to add to the existing ones? I would imagine you need to talk to the other Trailmon to get approval for things like that." Zachary asked. All the while as they were talking and conversing-- Panthermon, who was not the type to do nothing was already starting to get close to the tower and surrounding area. From his position and while invisible, he had a clear view of what was going on while the others talked. Whatever he would see, he could relay to Zachary. (OOC: Requesting permission to know of any activity around the base of the tower so Panthermon can tell Zachary telepathicly please. )

A communications device. How very interesting. As if that were a critical piece in a jigsaw, several things began to come together in David's mind. Who are they talking with? Is it meant to send or receive communications? Or both?
That wasn't the only thing that was weird. No matter how David looked at it, this all happened too fast. All these digimon just suddenly got together to surround a glorified radio tower and being so coordinated that they could not only build a town around it, but also draft plans and agree to how it should be built. What is so important about who they are all talking to that it'd be possible to coordinate such an effort almost immediately. In order for this to be possible, it seemed that all these digimon would have had to immediately know what to do and begin work the instant the tower appeared. But that didn't make sense.
Only two ideas came to mind. First, all the machine digimon had already planned this out ahead of time, and the tower appearing was the signal to begin. Second, the tower sent a communication that everyone received and started just following its orders to build the town. It seemed plausible that, since they were all digital machines, they could all have that sort of instruction uploaded into them.
David was so deep in thought that he jumped just a bit as Zaber brought him out of it. He wasn't really sure how what he said could be offensive. The Starmon had brought it up first, anyway. He opened his mouth to retort, as first impulse compelled him to. However, arguing wouldn't be good right now, so he shut it back without a word and just nodded.
"He can be dense sometimes," "Hey. Rude." "But sometimes he surprises me." That was why Ziggy even told David about all this in the first place. Doing something that was important but not dangerous, and would force him to use his brain could not be a bad thing. It'd certainly keep the boy out of worse trouble.
"So, Mr. Zaber, who do you think is talking to them?" Everyone is searching for a world where they belong. A place of light, free of falsehood.

When he had heard the BlackRapidmon describe the tower as a communications device, his mind which had always been attuned to strategy from a young age began racing along a similar track to that of the little boy named David, the youngest member of their group and while having his head slightly tilted to the right and with a calm, neutral expression on his face, he observed the BlackRapidmon silently while musing
A communications device, eh? Well now, that would imply there is a specific place, entity, or group that these townsfolk are in contact with for whatever reason. If so, what exactly is the nature of this conversation partner? Furthermore, it alos implies that there is or are receivers located at some other point in either the Digital World or perhaps even the Human World, the latter of which is true is actually worrisome. Additionally, these digimon seem much too coordinated and organized for this to be sheer coincidence. So then, did they plan all of this in advance with the tower being the signal flare for the commencement of this operation? If so, what is their true endgame agenda? If not, then are they perhaps simply receiving orders from someone or something? At any rate, it would be prudent to perhaps increase our vigilance with regards to this town and its inhabitants.
Of course, neither of them knew that the other was thinking the same thing since they did not exactly verbalize these particular thoughts. Faustein saw that Zaber had approached young David quietly and listened to him advise the kid to mind what he said henceforth.
Smart move there. Hopefully, this boy will heed the advice and indeed be careful with his words henceforth. After all, one wrong move, and this could turn out to be a "Climbing Silver" situation which of course, would not be favorable to any of us.
Faustein mused still silently as he listened and observed the interaction that the various members of their group with the BlackRapidmon with some being much more aggressive or direct than others. As he observed, his Sprite Spirit, "Doupplemon" spoke to him in his mindscape
This situation is turning out to be somewhat of a minefield, wouldn't you say, Commander?
Faustein did not show any outward reaction to the conversation, but he did respond mentally to it
Indeed, something tells me the worst is yet to come, so stay in Standby Mode for now, as your powers may be required after all in the end.
Then, he changed his blank expression to a convincingly cordial, enthusiastic albeit actually fake smile as he inquired of the BlackRapidmon after Zaber had finished
"Please pardon my curiosity here, but would you mind also elaborating on the exact form and capabilities of your Trailmon? You see, I happen to be somewhat of a Trailmon enthusiast. I love learning about the various Trailmon in the Digital World and I have seen a fair few types thus far, so I am always on the lookout for unfamiliar, but still brilliantly designed Trailmon, especially if they happen to be a new, never before seen custom form specific to some area. If possible at all, I would be honored and love the chance to know about yours. In addition to being an assistant writer, I also do have my own blog about Trailmon of various kinds in this world. So how about it? It could work as good publicity for your town if the world knew about your particular Trailmon and even double as a show of good will, if I was allowed to feature yours in my Trailmon blog wouldn't you say?"
To lend credence to his ruse that he had set in motion for gathering potentially valuable intelligence on the new town's Trailmon services and types, he reached into his lab coat pocket and pulled out a small album full of various types of Trailmon: some being the Worm type, others being Frankenstein, a few Moles, an Angler, and so on and held it out to the BlackRapidmon and of course, the rest of the group to see as well, if they cared to do so. Hopefully, this would allay any suspicion the BlackRapidmon may have gotten due to his question's nature. Then, he fell silent, wondering what the BlackRapidmon would say and/or do in response to his query.

Well... this was turning out to be a travesty.
Some of it, the Starmon could attribute to the lack of experience. From his own view, Agress had the political bluntness of a brick, David was too young to know what was going on, and Zachary, though well-meaning, was perhaps too patient of the group around him. After all that, though, in what felt the first time that the man with the crazy hair spoke up... he mentioned something about being a Trailmon enthusiast?
That made the Starmon blink, and even made the BlackRapidmon raise a brow. Yes, the trains were the point they were discussing, but the sheer convenience and absurdity of that claim was enough for the BlackRapidmon to not take it at face value. Not only that, but was that even a thing in the Digital World? The situation was only made more bizarre as a picture-book of Trailmon was produced out of his pocket.
"That's, um..." the BlackRapidmon stuttered, "quite offensive, actually." The BlackRapidmon didn't feel he had to explain why, at least for a moment, but then he remembered that most of his audience here was indeed, human. "They aren't objects, after all - but service Digimon with their own will and purpose. Seriously, I thought the gift shops in Terminus were told to stop selling these..."
"... Right..." the Starmon took a sigh, seeing the direction that this was going. "Look, clearly we're on the wrong foot, here. You mind if we all have a recess? Five minutes here, to cool our heads, is all."
"Hm? Oh, right, go on ahead."
"Alright, c'mon, boys." The Starmon would stand back up, and hold open the door of the hangar for everyone else to step out - nothing weird about the gesture to start.
But as the last person would leave? He'd not follow, but would instead close the door behind them, and, with one audible click, would lock all of them outside.

Zachary, or rather Zaber had to admit, he did enjoy the company of the younger tamer. Even if he was a bit of a wild child. He smiled at the interaction between the two. "Well, let's all just try to stick together and watch one another's backs okay?"
Faustein was far more inquisitive than Zachary thought with the mention of the trailmon. However, Zachary knew that Trailmon were not just mere machines. They were living digimon that acts as trains. Why they would be, he had no clue. Some things in the digital world were not worth questioning as to why Digimon was one thing and did another. Each to their own and had to work in some way. Either way, he for one was grateful some Digimon lived to travel others around.
While they were doing the best they could, the conversation and excuses were starting to grow thin that even Starmon realized they were being too suspicious and thus asked that the group be excused for a bit. While the Black Gargomon was willing to let them have a time out. Zachary couldn't help but frown.
What is the situation over there? Panthermon asked in telepathy. The cat was still on the prowl away from the group and invisible, spying like a pro for anything suspicious in the construction and tower area.
Zachary sighed. Our group lacks tact. I think Starmon is about to give us a lecture and a time out he joked dryly as they entered the hanger with the others.
A soft growl like a laugh went through Zachary's head as Panthermon continued to stalk around the site. I see. So far, I have nothing out of the ordinary to report-- well for machine Digimon anyway.

Even if the David didn't understand how his own words could be construed as offensive or impolite, he certainly knew why reducing living things down to just what object they resembled was way over a line. Hearing his teammate speak of Trailmon as if they were just another thing to be studied and classified left an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of his stomach. "You can't just say that." He was about to keep going, but Starmon and BlackRapidmon had that covered, and were a lot more mature about it than the boy probably would have been. Besides, he did not enjoy being tangled up in negative feelings.
After that, the group was ushered out of the hanger they had been in, and rightfully so. There was probably some diplomatic smoothing over that Starmon needed to do in private. It was slowly becoming more and more clear that this group is comprised of all the wrong people for diplomacy.
While leaving, David turned around for a bit, walking backwards. He smiled and waved at the BlackRapidmon. "Sorry about this," he projected, "We'll be back in a minute."
Ziggy, meanwhile, just lightly pushed David's arm down with a claw. "David, no. Not now." Compliantly, he lowered his arm and proceeded out the door, a slight skip in his step.
Everyone was now outside, and alone for the first time. David's eyes wandered back to that giant pillar that was the center of all intrigue. "You guys want to go check it out?" David pointed straight at the tower, erasing any ambiguity that his question may have presented.
Ziggy, in what would seem uncharacteristically naive, agreed. "It might not be a bad idea. We're obviously just making things worse here." Their group was getting nowhere with their talks, and investigating was their true goal here. What could it hurt? Everyone is searching for a world where they belong. The discussion inside with the entire group was informed they were getting off on the wrong foot? Agress was giving a loud but frustrated breath, hearing the Starmon talk for them already? To him this was the fastest way to get information even if it did stir a tense air between him and the BlackRapidmon. Even while being politely directed outside, Agress had his vision locked on the BlackRapidmon the moment they stepped outside Agress’s rigid focus came his downfall.
Suddenly the line of sight was lost, causing him to react loudly, tossing aside the customer service tone and slamming his fist onto the door. “This conversation isn’t over!” Even going as far to leave a few claw marks across the face of the door before pulling himself back enough with a reluctant groan. Adjusting his mask but not letting it be fully lifted from his actual face, taking a moment to just think.
Looking down to David, hearing the human spoke. “I am not going, to that. To me the job states to gather information about this town, then see what connections we can make. Which we are doing a pretty piss poor job about it, so just let Starmon talk to that guy.”
Agress scratched at his neck idly as a form of habit, fiddling with his claws while lost in thought. “ Fine, I am not doing anymore work then I am asked. I am going to walk around any other shops or business that will let me question things. I say if you want to get to the tower stick with Zaber over here.”
Agress tossing a hand out towards the other human before letting his gesture fall back to his side. “Go check it out, use your wandering to some good. Ay, Zaber!” he calls out.
“If your confident in that journalism blogging skills take it with you, let David go with you and stir the pot here. See if we can push some favors around here in a good guy and bad guy way. Be inquisitive about their history and where they are from... now.” the Venermon looked around for the next building to head towards, hoping something of a materials storage, import facility or trade shop.
“I will get some information, I will do it my way. Maybe after becoming a thorn in their side they might welcome a more respectable questioning from you two. Meet up in the Trailmon station in a couple hours and see what we find, then we can collaborate on our findings.” Without even having a confirmation of the plan Agress heads off, focused on getting his job done then to talk about how to do it at this point.

Well, that was one way to look at it: surely the Starmon was just giving them a break? Five minutes to cool their heads, and they'd be allowed back in?
... Yeah, right. No, the Starmon saw the situation for what it was - or rather, what it appeared to be - and simply cut the entire group out of the discussion. Between the multiple faux pas between them, it was much too risky to have them act as representatives for Rustport. It was better if the Starmon simply cut his losses and took up the discussions entirely by himself, rather than continue to rely on such a volatile group. If anything, Agress' blow to the door only sealed the deal on that, leaving the group back out in the town to their own devices.
Realistically, they had two choices. One, they could sit around and act like 'good' people, and wait for the entire meeting to end, and beg the Starmon for forgiveness later. Or two, they could further eschew their responsibilities, and explore the areas around them. Zaber was already in camp B, using Panthermon to scout the area around them, and David was gung-ho to visit the tower. Agress didn't want anything to do with that mess, and decided to head out on his own, to try and find a 'shop' or anything of the like in town.
For Agress, he would find that to be somewhat of a challenge. One, this was a place still largely under construction, meaning there was little infrastructure set up for such commerce. Two, consumers of such commerce were cyborgs and machines - and though their needs weren't zero, they were still of a significantly different scale and type than their mammalian counterparts. In Agress' search to try and find something similar, he would likely be drawn to break areas and small stands set up by the edges of the town, which may or may not have had interest in speaking with an outsider.
What he would catch onto, near one of these break areas, was a bit of commotion with a couple of Guardramon. They were near the outer edges of town, and both had their arms crossed, looking down at what looked to be a simple radio transmitter. It was pointed right in the direction of Rustport, likely as a means to create a line of communication.
"Seriously, still?" The machine on the left tapped his foot, before moving down to check the wiring. "I thought we fixed the power supply on this..."
"No, its nothing like that. I mean, we're getting a signal of 'something'...." The second machine looked over at a small screen, "But its all gibberish? Ugh, I thought we had the shielding from the tower down with this, but we might have to go further out."
"Hmph..." The first machine looked back to the tower. "Seriously, what good is that thing if its just gonna make us stranded out here?" As for the tower itself?
The way it was set up, even Panthermon likely wasn't going to mess with it. The town itself wrapped around the tower, but on the inner end, the entire area seemed to be fenced off, with a large swath of sand between the city and the tower itself. It didn't seem guarded, but that was exactly the point.
A large piece of land that no-one was trying to cross would be suspect in and of itself. Whether it would be the invisible panther's footsteps or David trying to run right across it, if they did make that move, they would probably be noticed in a mere instant.
But with what was happening above and below, maybe this place wasn't going to be quiet for long. If anything, the tower's ominous, silent appearance stood in stark contrast to the vibrant city behind them.
