‘The Book Cafe’ lay hidden from prying eyes. All thanks to a new shopping mall that sprang up, right in front of this once proud high-street. Now, they were lucky to get anyone popping their heads in.
Not to mention that any more customers; this late in the day was highly improbable. This was mainly considering the fact, there had only been a total of four in the span of an entire day.
Kirie was the only remaining employee; all the rest had jumped ship when it seemed like the business was destined to go under and found better jobs in the mall. The shop was owned by a kind, round-faced old man who had been too sweet and warm-hearted for Kirie to ever abandon.
Kirie sighed to herself, lowering the novel, ‘Umi o miru Hito by Yasumi Kobayashi’ from her face and looking out the fogged windows. Almost out of nowhere, the weather had turned from slight drizzle to almost torrential rain. She had been hoping that it would stop or at least slow down before she had to walk to the train station.
But, it was unlikely. Maybe, she could spend the night? It’s not like she hadn’t ever done that before.
Sometimes, she’d completely lose track of time. Lost in the pages of her favorite novel and then realize that she had missed the last train.
Thankfully, after last time, she kept a spare sleeping bag in the back, just for such an occasion. Sleeping on the hard floor was definitely no fun.

Another day passed by, Amy sighing as she went through her usual business; while the truth was that she had been avoiding the Digital World in the recent times, it was also true that, for some reason or another, she found herself tangled in a situation or event that involved them someway. Was this fate’s way of saying she should just toughen up and take things as they came? It surely sounded like that, even though… things were never that easy, were they? If it were up to her, she’d probably be on the Digital World right now instead of avoiding her duties, but she just couldn’t.
Maybe she just had to resign, and deem the situation as unsolvable with the tools she had at her disposal. Some things were only able to be mended by the slow and gentle hand of time.
The young woman, more often than not, found herself passively rejecting the four walls of her apartment. It was true that the place itself hadn’t been the scenario of her last misadventure, but that was mostly due to a technicality; she pretty much instinctively avoided being there when she could, and that was the reason why she found herself wandering aimlessly through Shibuya’s streets.
Of course, aimlessly didn’t exactly mean prepared. She had thought a hoodie would suffice in the face of a light drizzle, and the piece of clothing did a pretty good job at first. But when the the situation evolved into a veritable deluge, avoiding getting her body completely drenched had suddenly become Amy's top priority.
Her eyes began to scan the surrounding buildings with a measure of franticness. Most buildings seemed to be closed at the moment; the situation wasn't looking good at all until… she finally found a place that seemed open! Without even looking at what it was exactly, Amelie raced inside. Maybe it had been a bit rude to intrude so suddenly but it wasn't like she had much of a choice.
Once inside, she took a moment to examine her surroundings. As far as she could see, this looked like a pretty quaint book shop. However, at least from her viewpoint, she wasn’t able to see anyone. Maybe they were taking care of other things? Or maybe the place was about to close for the day. In any case…
“Somebody in here?” She called out, raising her voice a bit. She didn’t want to advance into the building considering her clothes were dripping pretty badly; testament to that was the small puddle forming itself just below her.
