The Onsen owned by the Oomiya family wasn’t exactly a money spinner but it was enough to keep their heads above water at the very least. It had been owned by Taihei Oomiya for about six years now; ever since ‘Gramps’ had decided to pack it in due to advancing age, stress, and aching joints.
The night hours drew men and women in, more regularly nowadays. Clearly wishing to soak their worries away and relax after a long day at work. The line was already growing longer as men dressed in suits, holding suitcases and tapping their watches waited for their turn to be checked in. While others, more regular guests, were already dressed in robes and holding their scrubbing brushes.
The youngest daughter, Miyuki sat at the desk; checking them in and giving directions and instructions. Filling the entrance hall with a brisk sense of excitement. Her blond hair tied back into two pigtails. So short that she had to sit on two cushions to reach over the high counter to be eye-to-eye with customers.
Gramps sat in one of the plush arm-chairs with his feet up; no longer obligated to help out and merely happy to watch the chaos ensue. He looked so at home, he’d appear more like a guest than a member of the family sometimes. A calculated but mischievous smile was hidden by a book.
“Please wait. One at a time,” Miyuki would squeak from behind the desk as men pushed forward, excited or impatient for their turn.
“I’ve been waiting for hours!” One man called, waving a sponge in the air.
“No, you haven’t. You got here at the same time as me!” Another man shot back.
“No, I haven’t.” “Oh, yes I have!”
Before a full-fledged fight could break out in the entrance hall; Miyuki’s father opened his office door. Taihei Oomiya was a soft-spoken man. Best known for having hair that constantly misbehaved. Even now, a spike of hair stood up, free from the rest. Red eyes from lack of sleep hid by thin-lensed glasses.
“I’m sorry but can you keep it down, gentleman. I’m trying to get some work done. Thank you.”
Before they could say anything in reply to this, Miyuki lifted the barrier and allowed the next group to enter the inner Onsen. The line moved forward, never growing any slimmer or less rowdy. Taihei sighed to himself but smiled at his daughter who smiled back. Unsure how to tame such a rabble of people.
Only a few minutes after this, something even stranger happened. Two men pushed the door open, causing the bell to jingle. In their arms was; what could only be described as a mountain of bags, purses, and suitcases. Two heads with slicked-back hair, tinted sunglasses, and demure expressions peered over the top of the luggage mountain.
Without saying a word to Miyuki, nor to her father or Gramps who stood watching with amazement – dropped the luggage into a neat pile at the base of the staircase which led up to the second floor.
Before anyone could say anything, the two men stepped forward; moving in sync with one another. Each man dressed identically; in a pressed and dapper suit. Set with a red tie emblazoned with a large and ornate letter ‘M’. Miyuki, Taihei, and even Gramps looked up over his book. Completely intrigued and a little taken aback at their curiously affluent style.
With little effort nor worry to whom they upset; the suited men pushed their way through the rabble of people and walked right up to the main deck. Pressing his hand against the wood, the man on the left lifted his sunglasses, revealing small black eyes and leaned forward.
“The luggage has been delivered. Arrival shortly.”
With a half nod, the man pushed his sunglasses back onto his face, turned, and left through the door, causing the bell to tinkle once again.
“What was all that about?” Miyuki asked, peering up at the shaking pile of cases from over the desk. “Papa, what do you think?”
Miyuki paused; catching sight of her father’s pale and appalled face. They fell into a chair at the side of Gramps, head in his hands. “The symbol on the tie. It can’t be.”
With a mixture of a laugh and a cough; Gramps set the book down onto the side table. Slowly he stood, throwing his arms open. “It appears the she-demon returneth to our humble halls.”
