Thanks to the sudden appearance of the ‘lost family’, the Oomiya Onsen had been temporarily closed. After all, it was hard enough to run a business on the regular, let alone, with the ‘culturally superior and more affluent side of the family’ buzzing around like metaphorical flies on a dung heap.
Miyuki often found herself on the end of her mother’s insults. Compared to her other daughter, Miyuki was just a simple if admittedly hard-working wallflower. A plain jane mixed in with the culture of Japan. As did her ex-husband whom she merely though of as a waste of space. She thought of the Onsen as a poor-man’s attempt at earning money and was basically rude, to near enough, the entire family.
Fierce arguments between Maki and Gramps were a daily ritual at this point. The screaming and arguments could be heard from several streets away. She would call him a useless old codger; he would call her a she-demon… which was ironic since he had been the one to call Maki back to Japan as a part of the ‘family reunion’.
On the latest occurrence, which had involved plates being thrown at one another. Taihei had slipped them Mew and Akko some money and had told them it’d be best if they went out for a while and left them to discuss matters without children present.
As such, Miyuki who was more than happy to escape the shouting for a while and the less-excited and more apprehensive Akko left to go to one of the old arcade units.
“So like, is it always like that?” Akko asked, throwing her long blond hair over a shoulder as they walked down the street. Miyuki smiled and shook her head, before muttering “...only recently.”
“It’s so a-n-n-o-y-i-n-g! I miss America. I miss my friends and like everything else. You know?”
Miyuki nodded kindly, although failing to take in much of what Akko has said. It was quite difficult to converse with her. She tended to not speak in Japanese and used some kind of strange form of American English.
“I think the arcade is down this way, Akko.” She pointed a finger down a grimy side road. Miyuki silently thought that there had never been anything as posh as Akko walking down it before.
“It should be pretty fun. Don't you think!”
