Mandrake and Lothar watched over the small work crew as they worked on their various tasks. An aggressive digimon was making a nasty habit of attacking the workers at night while they rested in their tents. Fortunately no one had been killed, yet, but many injuries had been caused by the mysterious digimon. To add insult to injury, the coward then went out of it's way to sabotage all the work done which set the crews back. Now barely any workers headed to the job for fear of being set upon by the malicious digimon. So Mandrake and Lothar volunteered to stand watch over night. Though they had accepted the offer of the bit reward, the bigger reward to the two friends would be to see these senseless attacks stop.
As the night came Mandrake reached out with his telepathy so he would be ready for the uncoming attacker while Lothar used his senses of hearing and smell in a similar fashion. Hours passed without incident but the duo remained patient. This digimon had attacked every night so far so it was a safe assumption that the suspect would return again. Suddenly Mandrake sensed a presence silently approaching and would soon be noticed by Lothar's sense of smell. Deciding not to speak out loud, Mandrake opened up a telepathic link with Lothar before he said 'Lothar, I sense someone coming this way. You evacuate the work crew from the area and alert the authorities. I'll keep the intruder busy.'
'I'll be back as fast as I can. Be careful, Mandrake.' Lothar replied back over the link before it was cut off. Then Lothar began working on getting the work crews back into the relative safety of Rosewood. As the workers scrambled into the town, Lothar moved to find the local law enforcement.
It would seem Mandrake didn't have long to wait after Lothar left as something was seen flying slowly toward the construction area. It wasn't long before the creature's identity was known as a Bakemon emerged from the shadows and made its way around as if looking for potential victims. After slinking around for a while the Bakemon found no workers around anywhere. Not that it was discouraged by this revelation though as it moved to wreck the work that had been done that day.
"That's far enough, Bakemon. You won't be causing anymore damage tonight." Mandrake said after sneaking up behind the Bakemon but standing a few feet away in case the ghost digimon lashed out at him.
The Bakemon spun around facing the one who spoke to it and said "A Wizardmon? Seems like someone from Rosewood hired you to ruin my fun." Then with a amused smirked he said "That is if you can even stand a chance against me. Evil Charm!" Bakemon transformed into a shadow and flew around swiftly before the shadows entangled Mandrake's legs ergo hindering the Wizardmon's ablity to move.
Mandrake strained as he attempted to free himself as Bakemon flew around him in his shadowy state as if mocking him in his plight. 'Just my luck, I can't move my legs. What is with me and creatures of shadows lately?' Mandrake thought as he wracked his brain for a solution to his problem. Upon thinking of something his sapphire colored eyes lit up. 'Creatures of the shadows often fear the light.' he thought as he formed a ball of electricity in the palm of one hand reaching full size in mere seconds. "Thunder Ball!" Mandrake exclaimed as he hurled the ball at the shadows in front of him. Bakemon howled in surprise after getting caught in the light of Mandrake's attack turning itself invisible as the shadows themselves vanished. Doubting this was over since he could telepathically sense Bakemon nearby, Mandrake readied to make his next move figuring two can play at this game when it came to invisibility.
"Clouded..." Mandrake began only to stop in surprise as Bakemon appeared right in front of him smiling maliciously.
Taking advantage of Mandrake's silent surprise, Bakemon said "Nerve Toxin!" A foul gaseous cloud shot forth from Bakemon's mouth causing Mandrake to cough as the gas invaded his lungs. Then, to his horror, Mandrake felt his muscles begin to go numb and dropped to his knees. Try as he might, Mandrake couldn't escape the paralyzing grip of the gas and his mind was feeling too foggy to open up a mind link to Lothar. In short, he was helpless and at the Bakemon's mercy.
Mercy, however, was the last thing on the Bakemon's mind as it cruelly laughed before saying "Bakemon digivolve to Phantomon!" As the transformation finished Phantomon floated over to Mandrake eyeing its helpless victim before using its free arm to force Mandrake to look him in the eyes by pulling on the back of Mandrake's head. Snickering at Mandrake's pained hiss, Phantomon said "It's a pity you were so easy to bring down but don't worry, you won't suffer for long. After I lop off your head, I'll absorb your data." With that said, Phantomon released the grip it had on Mandrake's head. As Mandrake's head drooped, the magician tried to speak but the gas seemed to be paralyzing his vocal cords too.
'Hard to believe after everything I've been through, I never thought I'd go out like this.' Mandrake thought grimly as Phantomon floated behind him raising its sickle, the glow of it reflecting ominously in the moonlight. A roar was heard coming from nearby causing Phantomon to pause and turn in the direction of the noise.
"Leomon digivolve to GrapLeomon!" Lothar roared as he digivolved to his ultimate form and punched the Phantomon in the face sending the ghost digimon reeling backwards. Mandrake released a sigh of relief but Lothar wasn't done yet. Before the Phantomon could regain its senses, he leapt forth the turbines on his arms rotating. Pulling his fist back he yelled "Gravity Punch!" The gravity distorting punch hit the Phantomon in the face sending the sickle wielding ghost hurtling toward the ground where it dedigivolved back into Bakemon.
Rosewoods authorities showed up a short time later to deal with the dazed Bakemon while Lothar dedigivolved back into Leomon and ran to Mandrake kneeling at his friend's side. Resting a hand on Mandrake's shoulder, he asked "Mandrake, are you okay?"
Mandrake, fortunately, was starting to regain feeling in his body though he was still unable to move. "Yes.." Mandrake weakly croaked as it seemed his voice was slowly returning. "Bakemon spewed some kind of nerve toxin at me but it seems to be wearing off."
It seemed talking alone was taking every bit of strength Mandrake had left and Lothar realized it so he didn't ask his friend anything else. "Let's go back to town, Mandrake. The nerve toxin should fully wear off by morning." Lothar said as he gently lifted Mandrake into his arms and headed back into Rosewood so Mandrake could get the rest he needed.
