Late in the night Mandrake and Lothar were walking through the streets of a fairly large town in the Digital World. Cradled in the crook of Mandrake's arm was their son LJ. The tiny purple Punimon was silent and shaking in fear as if picking up on his parents' distress.
It had started out well enough for the small family as they arrived in town in the late evening and Mandrake and Lothar had checked into an inn planning to leave in the morning. Things had been going well as they had begun settling into their room. Little LJ had worn himself out from his excitable hopping that he had been doing all day. Who knew where he kept all that energy? After making an improvised nest out of Mandrake's cape, which the young one seemed found of, they had put LJ to bed before climbing into the hotel bed themselves. Since the room was made for couples of various sizes the two of them found no trouble settling on the bed soon falling asleep themselves.
Things were quiet for awhile until a familiar presence alerted Mandrake that something was wrong and he sat up. The movement jostled Lothar causing the Leomon to wake and sit up as well. However before the two of them could say anything the door of the room was ripped off its hinges revealing that the familiar presence was indeed the Fugamon that served the shadow being that sought to enslave Mandrake. Before Fugamon could make another move, Mandrake lifted the pillows of the bed telekinetically and shot them at the Oni like digimon.
The surprise gave them what they needed as Lothar leapt off the bed and drop kicked the Fugamon leaving the intruder dazed. LJ began to cry from all the noise and Mandrake was able to soothe the little one telepathically as he lifted the purple Punimon off his cape and used his telekinesis to place the cape back on and retrieve his staff. Since LJ was so small, Mandrake was able to hold his and Lothar's son in one hand. After telepathically encouraging LJ to move into the crook of his arm he saw that Lothar had grabbed his sword and placed Mandrake's hat on his head. They knew it wouldn't be long before Fugamon recovered so they made their way swiftly out of the inn and into the streets.
Currently Mandrake and Lothar had moved onto a backstreet and came upon an unforeseen problem. It seemed Fugamon wasn't the only one sent after them that night as at least seven champion digimon surrounded them most of them being Apemon and one Kakatorimon. The Kakatorimon moved closer to them and knowing of this chicken like digimon's potential of pertrification, things were grim indeed. A battle would only endanger their son and since LJ was much to young to defend himself brute force was far from the optimal solution and Lothar seemed to realize this too as a worried look appeared in the Leomon's brown eyes.
The Kokatorimon waved its clawed wing signaling the Apemon to advance to take them captive. Mandrake knew the shadow being wanted him alive but knew that same feeling didn't include Lothar. He didn't want to think of what would happen to LJ in that monster's claws. Glancing at a nearby fire escape, the clever illusionist got an idea.
Reaching out to Lothar telepathically, Mandrake said 'Lothar, I have an plan. I'm going to distract them with an illusion. Since the Apemon are efficient climbers, don't head for the fire escape.'
Lothar silently nodded so Mandrake knew he understood his telepathic message. Now to initiate his plan. "Magical Game!" Mandrake said as what seemed to be the illusion of various flying garbage cans appeared and orbited the digimon surrounding them but the real trick was yet to come as one of the Apemon pointed at the fire escape and caused the other enemy digimon to see Mandrake and Lothar heading up the fire escape.
The Apemon charged for the fire escape and shortly reached what they perceived to be Mandrake and Lothar. One of the Apemon swung its club at both of the digimon causing what was obviously an illusion to vanish and the trash cans vanished as well.
While the evil digimon were confused about what happened it seemed Mandrake and Lothar made their way out of the side street. "I have to admit that was quite the brilliant illusion, Mandrake." Lothar whispered making doubly sure they weren't heard by their pursuers.
"In this case it was an illusion within an illusion and I, for one, am glad it worked." Mandrake whispered back before he continued "I think it would be wise to get to the Trailmon and get out of this town since it is currently not safe for any of us."
Lothar nodded silently in agreement and LJ quietly whimpered before they began walking briskly toward the town's Trailmon station. Mandrake and Lothar kept their guard up just in case they were attacked again. It seemed their pursuers had regrouped and began moving out, Fugamon included, but luckily they headed away from the Trailmon station.
As Mandrake and Lothar closed in on the Trailmon station Mandrake froze holding out his arm that was holding his staff which encouraged Lothar to silently stop. Both Mandrake and Lothar gazed around with cautious blue and brown eyes respectively. Mandrake reached out with his telepathy but sensed no one else but them and the Trailmon which made the Wizardmon breathe out a sigh of relief before he said "It seems, other than the Trailmon, we're the only ones here."
"Then we should board the Trailmon before those goons get the idea to come here." Lothar said causing Mandrake to nod in agreement and the two of them sprinted for the nearest Trailmon. The destination made no difference at this point as long as it was away from this town.
After boarding a Trailmon and sitting down, LJ squeaked out "Puni? Pu?" LJ had been silent up until this point so to hear him speak as the Trailmon started indicated the young one was feeling safe. Soon they would be likely far ahead of their pursuers from inside the town. It was likely the dark one who sent them would not be happy at their failure.
