Being on the run. Feet crashing against the pavement time and time again, propelling oneself forward. Your sweat starts to pile up, your respiratory system goes haywire, causing you to pant, while a sharp pain assaults your abdomen. Yet, a human’s innate instinct of self-preservation overrides all other distractions. An unparalleled adrenaline rush pushes you to keep running at top speed, surpassing what you previously thought to be your limit…
What had started as a normal day for Himura Yuko, age 17, had turned into a really bad, stressful dream. One minute she was casually walking to her school - ready for yet another boring day of staring blankly at the blackboard, while nodding her head every now and then to pretend that she was listening to the teacher’s words - the next she was being hunted down by a pair of black-suited men with black shades and earpieces.
Who were they? She had no idea. Why were they after her? She also had no idea. Maybe the government was trying to silence her for knowing about the existence of Digimon. Maybe her father’s criminal past had finally caught up with her, and those were hitmen sent by the Yakuza. Or maybe she had been falsely accused for a crime she hadn’t committed. She didn’t know, nor did she feel like sticking around to find out.
As it started raining, Yuko hid under a bridge, resting with her back against the wall and panting heavily. “Shit… those guys just wouldn’t give up. I think I lost them now…” The young Tamer whispered to herself, before pulling her purple and red Digivice out and turning on its Human-Digimon Comm. feature. “Jokah… Jokah! Can you hear me? Where are you? Answer me…” She tried to contact her partner, getting increasingly more desperate the longer she didn’t hear a response from the other end. “Jokah, please… I need your help…” She pleaded in a shaky voice, her eyes tearing up slightly, but it was no use.
Her concern grew by the minute. What if whoever was hunting her had made sure to take her partner out beforehand? Worse yet, what if they had turned Jokermon to their side by brainwashing him into thinking that Yuko was a threat to national security? Who could she even turn to for help? Her mom, her friends? She would just endanger them too. Where could she even go? If she tried to escape to the Digital World, she would not survive long there without her partner.
“Argh! How could this happen?! I don’t understand!” The colorful-haired delinquent groaned, kicking a discarded soda can out of frustration. Into the river it went - Shibuya River, to be precise - where all trash eventually ended up in.
“IT sEemS tHAt yOu HaVe LosT alL HOpe, mS. hIMuRa.” A heavily distorted voice interrupted her tantrum, causing the girl to turn her head and stare in shock at the towering figure that had approached her; Standing over 10 feet tall and wearing a long, dark cloak with a hood that completely obscured their facial features, this mysterious figure was enveloped in a bone-chilling aura, to the point one could feel the temperature drop just by being near them…

Silence fell as Yuko was stared down by this enigmatic, cloaked figure, save for the repetitive sound of rain pouring down at great quantities, creating two blurry walls of water on either side of the bridge. “Who are you…?” She worriedly asked, unsure still of whether this individual was truly a friend or a foe. “I Am tHe ONe whO ObsErVEs aND thE oNE wHo GUidEs, MS. hiMUrA.” The hooded figure responded, their voice modulator making it nigh impossible to estimate what age or even what gender they were. Were they even human, or were they some kind of supernatural, perhaps even chthonic being, such as a spirit or an apparition? It was a total mystery. “YoU mUSt hAvE A lOt oF QueSTiOns. YOu MuSt bE WonDeRInG wHy tHe WOrlD haS TurNEd aGAiNSt yOu. AlL wILl Be rEVeAleD wHEn tHE tiMe Is RIghT. WhEn yOU reALiZe YoUr oWn DEstInY, evERyThInG wIlL bEcOMe cLEar.”“It’s kinda hard to hear what you’re saying when you use the same voice filter as Anonymous.” Yuko snarkily remarked, while picking her ear. She had gotten the basic gist of it, though. It had something to do with destiny and whatnot, and despite apparently knowing all the answers, this mysterious guide would rather speak in riddles and let her figure it out herself. “I take it that you’re gonna give me some kind of clue of what to do next, right?” The girl further inquired. “CoRrEct.” The figure nodded, as their long-sleeved arm reached into their robes, eventually pulling out a totally not suspicious-looking garment bag. “FIrSt yOU muSt WEaR tHiS.”“A disguise, huh? Sounds reasonable enough. I guess it will be easier to avoid those guys if I can blend in with the crowd…” Yuko mused aloud, only to blink in surprise as soon as she opened the bag and took a peek at what laid for her inside. “Okay, scratch that… What the hell is this?! Is this some kind of joke?!” She angrily asked. “It iS IMpeRaTivE tHaT yOu WeaR tHIs. IT iS YoUr dEStiNy.” The shady figure insisted. “Hell no!” The girl stubbornly shook her head. “What part of destiny told you that I’ll have to put THIS on? I won’t blend in with the crowd if I’m wearing THIS. I’ll be doing the opposite!”“DO nOt quEStiOn DEsTinY!” The figure snapped at her, before turning the other way. “NoW gET chAnGeD qUIcKly. I PrOmiSE I sHalL nOT pEeK.”“Ugh, fine!” The young hooligan groaned. By the time she was done changing clothes, Yuko was clad in a form-fitting, full-body suit made of black leather, with matching high-heeled boots and a pair of pitch-black shades. “Damn it… It won’t go all the way up. You know, for someone who knows all about destiny, you sure did a crappy job predicting my size.” She said, while struggling to pull the zipper all the way up so that part of her cleavage wasn’t exposed to the elements. “And once again, I’ll have to insist that you tell me how wearing this will help me get away from those guys back there. I can barely walk in these damn heels, let alone run!”The figure suddenly cocked their hooded head to the side. “ThErE iS No tIMe tO EXplAiN. ThEy ArE cOMinG!”

“We’ve tracked her down! She must be hiding under that bridge!” A muffled voice was heard through the noisy rain, indicating that Yuko’s pursuers had finally found out her hiding spot. Naturally, this was all sorts of bad news, but it was also strangely nice of them to have waited until after she was done changing, thus avoiding what would have been a rather awkward and embarrassing encounter had they caught her in the middle of the act. Perhaps that too was the work of destiny… Anyway, the teenage Tamer started rightfully panicking, falling back on her favorite tactic in times of high stress - rapid-fire swearing. “Shit, shit, shit, shit! They’re here! What do I do?” Like a distressed child, she looked up at the tall, cloaked figure, all but begging for help. As much as she did not want to rely on a shady creep who met girls under bridges and coaxed them into wearing kinky costumes while talking about destiny and other mumbo jumbo, it behooved her to admit that she had no-one else to turn to. No-one she could afford putting in peril, anyhow. The figure simply raised their long-sleeved arm and pointed at a bicycle that just happened to be there. “TAkE thIS. IT iS thE bICycLE oF dEsTIny.” They stated in a serious, completely unironic tone, somehow making the simple act of hijacking someone else’s ride sound much more epic than it had any right to be. In fact, this whole thing could be seen as awfully convenient. The bicycle was clearly brand new - as evidenced by its untouched tires and the fresh coat of paint on it - as if it had been placed specifically there for her. Could this also be the work of destiny? The Himura heiress did not have the luxury of questioning it anyway. Deciding that time was of the essence and that there was no point looking a gift horse in the mouth, she quickly got on the bicycle and rode away, getting soaked from head to toe as soon as she passed through the wall of cascading water. Darn, it really was raining a lot tonight! Riding a bicycle while wearing high heels proved to be a more difficult task than she had anticipated. Not only that, but her suit was also proving to be a nuisance; Being wet from rainwater on the outside and sweat on the inside, it creaked in response to the slightest bit of movement, making squeaky, squelching sounds as she pedaled with her legs. “YoU aRE dOiNg gReAt, mS. hIMuRa. KeEp PEdALiNg LiKe THat ANd YouR dEStiNy ShALl sOOn Be FUlly REalIZeD.” The cloaked figure followed Yuko, keeping up with the bicycle’s speed by floating in the air like a specter. “You know what, screw you and your destiny talk!” The delinquent girl yelled at them, gritting her teeth in major annoyance. “This has been the second worst day of my life and I’m holding you responsible for it!” To be fair, she had placed her trust on this untrustworthy stranger in the first place, but only because there were seemingly no better alternatives. Such was her punishment for being truly desperate.

Yuko’s hand harshly squeezed the brake, forcing the bicycle to an abrupt stop. She had finally decided that enough was enough. It was time to stop! No more! Climbing off the two-wheeled, environmentally friendly vehicle, she cracked her knuckles and approached the cloaked figure, who was suddenly very confused. “Alright! Time to seize my destiny!” The girl exclaimed, reaching for their hood and trying to unmask them by force. “NO! WhAt ArE yoU DOinG?! StOp! S-s-s-s-s-s-t-o-p!” The mysterious figure pleaded, desperately trying to keep their hood on. Their struggle seemingly caused their voice modulator to break. “This is not your destinyyyyy!” They wailed in a whiny, high-pitched tone. “That voice…” Yuko’s pink eyes widened. The hood came off at last, revealing a very round, cartoonishly big head partly covered in a leather mask with creepy eyes painted on it. “Heeey there, Yuu-chan… What’s up?” Dracmon smiled nervously, a big bead of sweat popping up on his forehead. “Jokah, it was you all along?!” The teenage Tamer gasped in bewilderment, which soon gave way to epiphany, as the puzzle pieces came together one by one. “So, that’s why you didn’t respond when I tried to contact you! But wait… How come you’re so freakishly tall? Are you on stilts or something?” She asked, tilting her head in confusion. The rest of the cloak fell to the ground, revealing IceDevimon carrying Dracmon on his shoulders. “Hi, fellas. I took the liberty. Of carrying this little creature. On my back.” The icy demon explained with a fanged grin. “Huh, that does explain why it felt so cold whenever I stood near you.” Yuko mused, pensively placing her hand on her chin. “Now you know that everything that happened today was part of my own ingenious plan!” Dracmon bragged, proudly puffing his tiny chest. “And I did this all for you, so you can’t be mad at me.”Suffice to say, this only furthered Yuko’s confusion. “Everything?! What does that mean? And what do you mean you did this all for me?”The vampiric Digimon smiled cheekily as he began to explain. “Remember when you were gushing about that movie you saw? The one where a woman in a sexy leather suit was running away from a bunch of evil robotic agents and riding a motorcycle, while a mysterious guy in black talked about destiny? You said you wanted to be just like that woman, so I thought I’d make your wish come true. Everything that happened was just like the movie. I even had MarineDevimon use his powers to make it rain for dramatic effect!”“Darn it, Jokah, it was a mysterious black guy, not a mysterious guy in black…” The young hooligan sighed in exasperation, pinching the bridge of her pierced nose. “So, you went out of your way to recreate a movie scene in real life without telling me anything about it, AND risked revealing the existence of Digimon to the public in the process. What the hell, dude?!”“If I had told you, it would have ruined the suspense.” The little vampire casually replied. “What about those guys who were chasing me then? Who were they?” The colorful-haired girl further asked. “Hello, we are a couple of underpaid actors.” The guys in question caught up to them, waving to the group in a friendly manner. “By the way, what’s a Digimon?”Dracmon hopped off IceDevimon’s shoulders and ran up to the two men. “Look deeply into my eyes! You vill fall into a deep sleep. Ven you vake up, you vill remember nothing…” He did his best Transylvanian impression, hypnotizing them with the enchanted eyeballs in the palms of his hands. Sure enough, they collapsed on the ground, sleeping as peacefully as babies. “That should do it! No Digimon are gonna be exposed to the public now, kekekeke!” The smug Virus-type said, followed by a cackle. Yuko sighed once again, picking up the child-sized vampire and carrying him in her arms. “You’re a pain in the ass, you know that…? Just pretend to be a stuffed toy while we make our way back home, okay?” The teenage Tamer requested, hoping that her well-meaning, yet troublesome partner could at least keep his big mouth shut for that long.
