"Mizu, it's time for lunch!"
It was one of those days. The sun was finally just below the buildings, meaning it was time for the shop to close. It had been a hot day, especially with the broken AC sputtering and being unable to keep up in the apartment. Hopefully, though, the shop had made enough money today to pay for the new AC. But for now that didn't matter, Mizu was mentally exhausted and hungry after all the studying.
Running downstairs, Mizu could smell the fragrant scents of the ramen from across the shop. His mom was always good at making him feel better after the long, lonely days of studying in his room. He wasn't able to really leave, after all, outside could get dangerous and people didn't like him. But that wasn't a big deal now, he just wanted to eat, and today was his favorite.
As the meal went on and Mizu chowed away, Mizu's parents went on talking about the day. They were tired, but at least they had the money to get the AC fixed. They'd even made enough extra to finally get some new equipment they'd been needing. It was good that they were able to make the money needed. But with those points out of the way, the attention shifted to Mizu.
"So, did you get your extra assignments done for today?" his mom said.
"Mmm-hmm."
"Good. We need you to do something tomorrow before the shop opens." This caused him to stop eating. He'd never been asked to do anything like this, or even allowed to leave the shop alone. Why would he be doing this now?
"All we need is for you to pick up some milk and eggs from the store two blocks from here. Can you do that?"
"I... uh, I can do that," he said somewhat sheepishly. With that, his parents began talking to each other again. His mind began to race, wondering what might happen. Maybe he would have to go on an adventure to get what his parents wanted. Maybe he would just go and come, with no excitement. He didn't really know.
Suddenly his parent's brought him back to reality, it was time to clean the shop before bed. But now his mind was racing. In all of his 11 years alive, he had never been granted an opportunity quite like this. Now there was no going back. He had a job to do.
As he woke up the next morning, his parents got him ready. He needed to be back before the shop opened with milk and eggs. Pretty simple, but still quite scary. He had to go at this alone for the first time. Once he was geared up, he was sent outside to his destination.
"Two blocks to the store, two blocks to the store," he kept repeating to himself as he walked with the crowds toward his destination. The change in his pockets jingled as he walked and looked around him. The beautiful colors of signs and lights he could see from his window were beautiful. Suddenly, as if no time had passed, he'd arrived at the store.
