A cool, fragrant breeze floats its way between the great trees that make up the Server Woods. It comes to pass that this breeze alights upon a clearing, deep within a less-remembered area of the forest, carrying with it the scent of pine. Within this clearing, so far off the beaten path, lies a decrepit cabin, nestled in the undergrowth. Despite its age, the shack shows signs of use, and much of the grass and weeds covering its facade and porch has been cleared away. This area may be forgotten by most, but there is at least one left who remembers it, and it so happens that on this day, the breeze finds its way to their nose, bringing with it its scent, where it is perceived by a lone Dorumon. The smell brings nostalgic thoughts.
The Dorumon's full name is Djehuti, though it insists to those it meets that they call it simply "D". On this day, D is making their last preparations before setting off from the familiar territory of the Server Woods, to lands beyond. They check their possessions to make sure they are prepared for their travels:
Food... check! Paper... check! Notes... check!
Each item brings with it excited thoughts of what new knowledge there is to be learned, what new people to meet and befriend, what strange adventures await.
D's gaze turns to the cabin's interior, filled with memories, both familiar and foreign.
Someday, I'm going to find out who lived here before me!
An acorn falls into the center of the room. D follows its path through a large hole in the ceiling, with buckets placed beneath.
... And I'll fix that darn roof, too! Just as soon as I figure out how...
The cabin's dirt floor shows signs of dampness, brought on by rain from the night before. Tiny patches of moss are growing near the edges, where other parts of the cottage are divided via a change in flooring, from dirt to wood, raised up off the ground.
A rusted belt with an oversized belt buckle hangs precariously on rotten hooks above a worn wooden combat dummy. D approaches the dummy, and gives it a few solid swipes with their claws. Still nice and sharp! Hopefully I don't have to use these. D gives the dummy a friendly headbutt, and a shiny rock on a tiny shelf is knocked to the floor by the impact.
D catches it without even thinking, before it reaches the floor. Wouldn't wanna forget you! D tucks the rock securely into their fur. Holding it brings back fond memories of warm days and cool nights under the digital sky, sharing good times and asking myriad questions to the travelers that frequented his childhood stomping grounds. That was before they discovered this cozy cabin, which, to their knowledge, was completely unknown to anyone in their forest. It was a prime location for someone like D, prone to introspection, theorizing, and intellectual pursuits. Besides that, the previous occupant left all of their possessions behind, making for an easy time settling in on top of leaving breadcrumbs for all manner of burning questions, both new and pre-existing, for D.
Despite their nostalgia, D had always known that they would have to leave this place one day. The items left behind by the previous owner of the shack represented a body of knowledge, and, more importantly, a world far greater than D had imagined up to that point, and their life within its walls had always been a prelude to a proper foray into the unknown. Still, D couldn't help but feel juuuust a little sad about leaving. They took a few steps past the dummy and found themselves at the side of their bed, which had faithfully served them for a long time now. A crude thing of wood and fur, it was miles better than the cold, hard ground out in the woods. I'm gonna miss you..., D said as they ran their hand through the furred hides that covered its frame.
D returned their attention to the task of preparation. At the foot of the bed was a desk covered haphazardly in sheets of paper. Above it was a window with a view into the thick, deep forest. Surprisingly, despite its location so far into the Server Woods, this region was unusually calm and placid. Most areas this deep are haunted by some thing or another, or present other hazards in the form of hostile Digimon, or simply the environment itself, but this section was relatively danger-free. D reached into a drawer and retrieved a set of writing tools, some re-claimed, others hand-made. Can't write my notes without these!
Finally, the task was done. D stepped out the door onto what passed for their front lawn. They turned around to take a good, long look at their home before they left. D knew this wasn't the last they'd see of it, but nonetheless felt a certain sense of loss. That, and pangs of irritation. I really need to fix that roof...
Resolved to begin their adventures, D whipped around 180 degrees and proceeded into the undergrowth surrounding the clearing. They knew they way by heart, and swerved through the bushes and trees, careful to cover their tracks. Diligently they swept any footprints they made away using their tail, and made careful steps to avoid disturbing any plants too much. Finally, they found themselves at the side of a dirt road cutting through the forest. It wasn't well traveled, and quite thin, surrounded on both sides by tall trees and plant life that seemed to loom over the path. D followed the path to the left, carefully observing their surroundings, and listening for any sign of life. Finding none, D reached the end of the path, a dead end blocked by a giant dead tree. D deftly hopped on top of the huge log and followed it to its terminus, a side path connected to the main road network passing through the Server Woods. This path was much better maintained, several feet wide and packed down from foot traffic. D looked back and nodded when he saw that the path beyond the giant log wasn't visible from the road they now stood on, and proceeded along until they reached the main road. Well built, it was covered with interlocking cobblestones, smoothed down over decades of use. At this point, D's sense of familiarity with the terrain began to dwindle, until they reached a fork in the road. Beyond this point was new territory. D's face broke out into an excited grin as they confidently stepped forward into the unknown...
And somewhere, a cool, fragrant breeze floated through the Server Woods...

Jeez, this road is long..., D moaned as they trudged along the cobblestones. They'd been walking for several hours now, and it only just dawned on them how massive the Server Woods are. Main road or no, there was a lot of ground to cover. The constant flow of campers through the relatively calm area D called their childhood home now made much more sense. In a forest this big, frequent stoppage was necessary.
Thankfully, here on the main road, things were decently calm, and D hadn't run into anyone on their way. Their only obstacle at this point was boredom, which they'd conquered with the mighty blade of the sunk cost fallacy. They'd travelled far enough at this point that (so it seemed) it would be better to continue than to turn back.
Based on their incomplete notes, D knew there were a few places to hit up in these woods before leaving entirely, a task that was increasingly revealing itself to be more and more difficult. Not that D could complain all that much, they certainly didn't feel out of place. In any case, D was proceeding through the woods on the lookout for a particular village. They had very little information to go on, but they knew it was, at the very least, attached to the Server Woods, if not deep within. According to their notes, the village would be a source of critical information regarding some burning questions they had about the origins of Digimon. Having grown up on their own as a feral Digimon, their knowledge was limited on this subject. Heck, they hadn't yet fully conceived of the Eastern Timberlands as the greater area in which the Server Woods was contained.
With all this walking, though, this goal seemed forever away. D resigned themselves to their long trek, marching onwards along the path.
The sun had just crested the top of the sky, and began its slow descent.

Two brothers gazed around the area with their blue eyes taking in the enviroment around them the breeze running through the short red mohawk on the scaly Cutemon's head. The Cutemon, named Hiroshi, wagged his tail that appeared to look like a Shoutmon's tail but pink instead. Not far away a furry Shoutmon, named Leroy, had his gaze on what looked like an old cabin. Sniffing the air, his sense of smell better than his twin brother, he caught the scent of a stranger and said "Hiroshi, someone has been here and not all that long ago at that."
Hiroshi ran up alongside his twin and smelled the air as well. His brother was right and the stranger seemed to have headed into the bushes. Turning towards the bush he spotted a small amount of purple fur hanging on one of the leaves. Plucking it off the leaves, Hiroshi brought it up to his nose and took a sniff. "No doubt about it. This smells like a Dorumon." Hiroshi said as Leroy took ahold of the fur and sniffed it as well confirming his brother's assumption.
Curiosity driving them they turned and followed the Dorumon's scent. Hiroshi kept an eye on his chaotic brother as they walked soon catching up and spotting the Dorumon before Leroy shouted "Hey over there!" Letting out a sigh at Leroy's less than subtle approach he was relieved since it easily could of been worse.

D was lost in thought, wondering if they should have left with more of a plan in mind, when suddenly their ear twitched as they detected a source of noise some ways down the path back the way they came. D knew this was a main artery through the woods, but nonetheless an encounter with some travelers was unexpected. Judging by the sound, there were two people on their way towards D, with one source of noise considerably louder than the other. Loud enough, in fact, that a distinct cry of "Hey, over there!" was audible from several yards away.
D turned towards the source of the shouting, and saw the two travelers on their way towards him. One, like D, resembled a sort of furry dragon, though colored red instead of D's purple, while the other was covered in pink scales and had a pair of long ears.
Here, on this sunny afternoon, on the main road leading through the Server Woods, D would have their first encounter on their journey. They certainly didn't want to make a bad first impression, so they began their interaction by hazarding a friendly wave to the pair of travelers heading towards them. After waving, D stopped their passage along the road and waited for the duo to reach them.

From a few yards away this Dorumon didn't seem all that different from others of its kind being a typical dragon with the normal purple and white fur. After being waved over Hiroshi and Leroy approached the unknown digimon with Leroy bouncing with curiosity but such curiosity could easily turn into something far more chaotic after all since the furry Shoutmon was the embodiement of chaos in Hiroshi's life but he had always managed to keep his twin in check.
"Hello there. Sorry about the bluntness of my twin. I think he's merely curious. I'm Hiroshi and the furry Shoutmon with me is my brother Leroy." Hiroshi said as Leroy was still bouncing but was calmer now.
"Geez Hiroshi, chill out. You're acting like I make a habit of causing trouble for strangers." Leroy replied as Hiroshi merely rolled his eyes in annoyance though his brother did have a point even though Leroy could be hard to live with at times.

D's head cocks to the side, and they seem to consider Hiroshi's words for a moment before responding:
Nice to meet you both! I'm D.
Gears seem to turn in D's head for a moment before they continue:
I'm glad to indulge Leroy's curiosity if you're willing to help me out with some of mine! I don't know a lot of things, and I usually fix that by asking people questions. People tend use that word "blunt" that you just used to describe me when I do that, though. I know it's some kind of weird social thing, but I haven't quite figured it out. Plus, how am I supposed to learn things if I don't ask questions? Anyway, I'm getting off track. Here, lemme just--
D then produces a crude notebook from their fur, with pages seemingly ripped into a convenient size and shape all bound up on a rusty spring. They scribble a few notes inside for a moment, then turn their attention back to the pair of brothers.
Right, okay. Conversation. I haven't seen Digimon like you guys pass through the Server Woods before. Where did you guys come from? How far away is it? Wh--
D stops themselves and realizes that they could potentially overwhelm Hiroshi and Leroy with questions. They've got a lot of them bouncing around in their head most of the time, and the pair of strangers in front of them are the first encounter they've had on this road so far, so they nearly got carried away. For now, they've quieted down and let the questions hang in the air, expectantly awaiting the response, pen in hand.

"D? That's an odd name." Leroy said before Hiroshi elbowed his twin.
"Leroy be nice it's obvious it is short for his full name." Hiroshi hissed in a tone that he used to get Leroy under control and it worked.
At least it worked for a short time anyway as Leroy then said "I'm Leroy and the scaly Cutemon with me is my twin brother Hiroshi."
Okay so far so good there was no Leroy induced chaos but Hiroshi knew it was only a matter of time. Then in response to the question D asked, Hiroshi said "There is a good reason why you haven't seen us around here seeing as we kind of wander from place to place so the last place we lived in was actually the Village of Beginnings making us in a sense wanderers. I guess it may seem strange that a Cutemon and Shoutmon are not only twins but are half dragon to boot."

D's ears perked up at the mention of the Village of Beginnings. That sounded a lot like the place they were looking for!
What was that about a village? I'm looking for one of those right now! See, I just got started wandering myself, and I wanna make sure I go to all the places. I heard that there were some that were in and around the woods, but I haven't found them yet, since I don't really know where any of them are.
D sheepishly continues: My plan was to follow this road until I got somewhere, since I figured that leading to places is what roads do, but I've been walking and walking and...
D lets out a heavy sigh: Anyway, it's a bit frustrating. I wanna make sure I check everything in and near the woods before I work my way out, but at this rate it feels like I'm going nowhere.
I think I got off track there. It's super cool to run into people who are also wandering! How long have you two been doing that? What's it like?

Hiroshi and Leroy looked at each other confused. It seemed D didn't know about the Village of Beginnings. How could that be seeing as most digimon were born in that village. Leroy was the first to voice his confusion as he said "Were you not born in the Village of Beginnings or something? That's the only way this makes sense to me."
Hiroshi, however, was paying more attention to D's words hoping Leroy would continue to behave. "How long have Leroy and I been wondering? I would say after we digivolved to our rookie forms and left the village. As for finding your way I'm sure you will since, so far, my brother and I are doing alright." Hiroshi said.
Meanwhile Leroy had his attention on some falling leaves and formed a fireball in one of his paws while he held his microphone firmly with his other. Lifting his arm up towards the falling leaves they disintegrated upon hitting the fireball until Leroy lost interest and dissipated the flame with a smile.

D responded to Leroy's question: I've never been to any village, actually! I have heard a bunch of stuff about them though. I grew up in the Server Woods, myself, though this section of the forest is one I've never visited.
Hiroshi's words of encouragement gladdened D: Gosh, that's great to hear! I was beginning to get worried.
D watched Leroy's pyrokinetic feats with great interest. I always wondered how Digimon do that kind of stuff! Fire seems like it would be a useful thing to be able to make happen. All I can make is balls of metal, which I guess is still neat. I can't exactly make a campfire with it though, haha!
D felt comfortable around these two brothers. There were still many questions in their mind, but for now they were content to simply enjoy their company.
So, you guys are from the village? That's pretty lucky for me to have run into you two then! I'm headed that way, so any information, whether it be directions or just cool stories, is much appreciated! D's eyes seemed to shine with curiosity, and they began to scribble some things into their notes.

Upon hearing he grew up in the Sever Woods Leroy's attention was back on D. "Did your parents raise you in these woods or did your egg somehow just end up out here for crazier reasons?" Leroy asked genuinely curious his tail gently swishing back and forth which, for the twins, meant they were in a calm mood. Odd since Leroy was rarely mellow for long but Hiroshi decided to enjoy the peace he had before Leroy went into chaos mode, as the Cutemon known as Hiroshi thought of it, because anything could happen with his furry brother.
It was good D was now in a better mood and seemed fascinated by Leroy's fire ability. "Yeah somehow both Leroy and I share a fire move and a healing move in common but maybe it was because we shared an egg." Hiroshi said with a brief shrug. "You might be able to create fires with your metal ability if you strike a flint against the metal ball." Hiroshi suggested.

I... actually don't know. I sorta grew up on my own, and only learned about what parents were much later. I mostly raised myself, but I had a couple of good friends, and the area I lived in had a lot of people who passed through it, both Digimon and human, and I learned a lot of what I know now from them. My lack of knowledge about how I got... D gestures broadly at everything: here, is actually one of the reasons I'm out exploring. I want to find out more about that, along with a whole list of other stuff. I keep it in this notebook I cobbled together!
D proudly displays their hand-crafted notebook.
Hiroshi's remark about the two brothers sharing an egg seemed to pique D's interest a little. You two shared an egg? I didn't know that was a thing that could happen... With that, D scribbled something into their notebook.
They also noted Hiroshi's suggestion regarding firestarting techniques: Believe me, I've tried to use my metal balls as a firestarter, but they're too smooth, and I can't get any sparks. I use this old nail I found instead, it seems to do the job okay. Plus, I learned a trick from a Tamer a long time ago where you use two sticks and a bit of string, which also works pretty good. On wet days I use this spyglass I got from a different Tamer.
D whips out a tiny device resembling half of a pair of binoculars and gazes through it at Hiroshi and Leroy, then puts it away.
Anyway, yeah. I've lived in these woods for as long as I can remember, though I haven't explored this far just yet.

Leroy was fascinated by D's description of his life before he decided to explore on his own. "Living on your own must of been rough but at least you didn't spend your entire life completely alone. Though Hiroshi is a bit to serious for my liking I know I would be completely lost without him." When D showed off his hand-crafted notebook Leroy then asked "That is a nice book, did you make it yourself?"
D seemed confused that they shared an egg. Did he not know about how twins work? "Twin digimon are born from the same digiegg so such a thing is normal, D. I guess no one you met mentioned to you how twins work." Hiroshi explained to D in the calm patient voice he was known for.
As D showed them various things he used to start a fire, Leroy said "At least you have the supplies you need to start a fire if you need one. After all raw meat apples are disgusting." Hiroshi smirked as somehow the conversation had led to food being mentioned. Some digimon seemed to be bottom less pits so it was likely a matter of time before food came up in any talk.
"At least both the Digital World and Human World are worth exploring." Hiroshi said.

Proud to show off their journal, D replied, I did! I did make it myself! It took a few tries, though, that's for sure!
The book itself was clearly cobbled together, though suprisingly solid. The pages looked to have been part of a greater sheet of paper once, ripped into a smaller, semi-rectangular shape, and pierced by an old metal spring, which held all the pages together. The entire assembly was bound by two covers, which didn't match each other, as they had been salvaged from destroyed books.
I try to put everything I learn into this book, that way I can remember it easier. Plus, someday maybe somebody else will read it!
Hiroshi was polite enough to explain twins to D, which D was grateful for: Wow! I didn't know that. Thanks for teaching me!
Leroy's thoughts on food and fire got D thinking about past experiences: Yeah, I hear you there! I used to stick mostly to eating fruits before someone taught me how to make a fire. After that, I couldn't go back to eating raw food! That's something else I wanna learn more about, what kinds of food exist. I met a lot of people who brought interesting foods with them on their travels, and not all of them let me try some, but I made sure to make a note of each dish since they were way more interesting than what I was eating.
Hiroshi's mention of the Human World seemed to catch D's interest quite strongly: I forget sometimes that there's a whole other world out there, populated by humans instead of Digimon. I hope to learn lots about that world someday, too. There are so many fascinating things everywhere!
Just thinking about it gets me excited!!
D stops to catch their breath for a second, then continues:
I'm gonna try to work at everything in order, though. I find tackling the biggest questions usually leads to more questions than answers, so working on the smaller stuff first seems like a good idea. That's why I'm searching for this village, you guys called it the Village of Beginnings? I heard from someone that it has something to do with where Digimon come from, and I'm guessing it's because it's where a lot of Digimon are born, like what you guys said. I bet there's people who can explain a lot of that stuff to me in that village.
After investigating that place, I'll probably work my way out of these woods proper, to really see the world! I'm especially interested in cities, apparently the buildings there are huge, and there are tons of people! I can't imagine living somewhere like that, so I've just gotta see how people do it!
D takes another moment to breathe, this time slightly longer.
Anyway, yeah!
D was clearly having a great time talking to these people, and was delighted that their first encounter on the road would be with such interesting people, with connections to their current destination, no less! Today was shaping up to be a good day.

"Writing down things you learn does make it easier to remember things. Leroy and I both know humans use that technique for various reasons." Hiroshi said.
"Yeah like taking notes for the purpose of studying in school." Leroy added with a slightly annoyed sigh. He didn't hate school but to this day still didn't understand why some digimon went to school with humans.
At the mention of eating raw food Hiroshi and Leroy shuddered as they had a similar issue as babies. Fortunately the encounter hadn't turned them away from meat apples permanently. "I think a lot of digimon go through learning the hrd way not to eat meat apples raw. Hiroshi and I tried to eat a meat apple raw as babies." Leroy said shaking his head to clear the memory. "As for types of foods there are so many in both worlds it boggles my mind."
"The Human World is fascinating and Leroy and I attend one of the schools there. Apparently other digimon that are disguised are also enrolled there." Hiroshi said before he continued "As for getting things in order that is always smart. When you are ready I'm sure there are lots of things to see with ones own eyes outside this forest. As for the Village of Beginnings there are adult digimon who look after the baby digimon who'll likely be more than happy to help you learn what you need to."
