Operation: Treasure Hunt! (Armor Champion Hunt, Tsubaki)

A few days after their encounter with Mandrake, Lothar and Kshin in Whitewater City, Hana and her partners, Data and rush, returned to the Digital World in order to track down a digimental to use for Operation: Pirate Hunt (trademark pending). Currently, Hana was using her digivice to scan for any anomalous energy readings as the trio walked through the city.
"Do you want some help with that, Hana?" Data wearily asked, watching as Hana fiddle with the device for the umpteenth time.
"No, I can do this!" Hana replied in irritation, tapping the digivice's screen to try and get it to work. "Why is this stupid thing so complicated? Is it really so hard to program a digivice with a user's manual? Oh, wait. I got it!"
The digivice beeped as it entered scanning mode, the display transforming to resemble a radar screen with an arrow pointing towards an unknown energy reading in the distance.
"Hah! I told you I can figure this out on my own!" Hana smugly stated.
"Yes, yes. and it only took you about an hour to do so." Data countered.
"Rush is hungry, Mama." Rush interrupted, nibbling on his fingers as he talked.
"Oh, I'm sorry buddy. Here you go." Hana apologized. She reached into her backpack and pulled out an orange for Rush to snack on. The Keramon quickly took it and ate it, peel and all.

While Hana managed to triumph over technology and feed a friend, there was another issue going on at the time. Another issue so great that it would have no choice but to bleed into the twin tamer's fate. This was an act of sheer and unadulterated... INJUSTICE.
"What do you mean this cake costs seventy-thousand bits!?" The Wanyamon yelled out in disbelief and utter shock and horror. He rest atop a teenage girl's head of black hair as he doth protested towards an Ebidramon street vendor. The dragonic lobster Digimon began to make a growling noise, but the in-training fuzzball didn't seem deterred in the slightest. "And for a slice, no less! Clearly you are attempting to rob tourists of their precious income, are you not? That is a despicable act in of itself! I demand you lower your prices this instant, for the good of everyone!"
"I mean, it's really not that big a deal..." The girl underneath the blue fuzzball muttered under her breath, her hands stuck in her skirt pockets.
"But this is a gross miscarriage of justice! What kind of humble street vendor would offer food to travelers at such exorbitant prices!? He preys on the lack of knowledge creatures like you have and..."
"Oi. You just called me stupid just now, didn't you?" The young woman's eye began to twitch in irritation as a not-so-friendly grin began to form from her lips.
"Listen up, are you going to buy this or not?" The Ebidramon growled. "You're holding up the line, human! And that brat of yours is causing a scene about absolutely nothing!"
The Wanyamon wrapped his long, fuzzy tail around the back of the young woman's neck, hopping down from her head to dangle over her shoulder. "Tsubaki! You must not be fooled! Heed not his wicked words and his poisonous whispers of delicious sweets that make your mouth water so!"
The young woman, Tsubaki, leaned her head off the to side so the little round beast wasn't yelling directly into her ear. The little Digimon's voice was so loud that she ended up grimacing in pain, regardless. "Whatever. I don't even have any money. I was just looking around, was all..." She muttered, taking her hands out of her pockets and emptying them out to reveal their non-existent contents.
"THEN GET OUT OF MY STORE!!!" The lobster dragon boomed, all but shoving the pair out away from his stand.
"Sheesh, I get it already!" Tsubaki protested, while the Wanyamon glowered in seething rage.
"This will not go unanswered, foul villain!" He yelled out. "I am Constance St. Bernard, and I am the shining wolf of justice who shall right all wrongs in this world! Remember my name, swindling merchant, for I shall return and - mmph!" His mouth was covered by the young woman's hands.
"You're being too damned noisy, Connie!" Tsubaki grumbled, squeezing the Wanyamon's surprisingly squishy body. "You're making a scene! Stop yelling so much before I punt you into the highest building in this damned, confusing city!"

As Hana and her partners continued their search for a digimental, they quickly found themselves distracted by the sound of angry shouting in the distance. The three of them looked about to try and find the source of the noise, and were just able to make out the sight of a human and a Wanyamon getting in an argument with an Ebidramon shopkeeper.
"What's going on over there?" Data asked, tilting his metallic head slightly in confusion.
"Let's go and get a better look. That shopkeeper seems familiar, and not in a good way." Hana suggested, narrowing her eyes.
She put her digivice away in her pocket, before pulling her partners towards the duo in the distance. As they approached, they saw the girl (they could now see that it was indeed a girl about Hana's age) and the Wanyamon get all but shoved away from the stall by the angry Ebidramon while the Wanyamon was ranting about injustice. Looking at the lobster dragon's stall, Hana suddenly remembered why they seemed so familiar.
"Oh, I remember you! You're the shopkeeper that keeps trying to scam tourists by selling them overpriced food!" Hana exclaimed.
"Boo! Bad Lobster!" Rush angrily shouted at the champion digimon.
Hana turned to the human girl and the Wanyamon. "I'm Hana. Did this guy try to scam you, too?"

Tsubaki and Connie's bickering kept going on for some time. It got to the point where Tsubaki had grabbed onto Connie's tail and began to twirl him around causing the baby Digimon to start screaming in panic. And right as Tsubaki was about to let go and let him fly off like a foxtail toy, a girl around her age approached her.
"Yo. Name's Tsubaki." She replied rather simply, opening her hand up and letting Connie fly right towards the ground bounce right off the ground and back onto Tsubaki's shoulders. He seemed to recover fairly quickly, as he declared, "And I am Constance St. Ber-"
"This is Connie. What's up?" Tsubaki interrupted, tilting her head curiously. "Oh, the lobster dude? I mean, I guess you could call it a scam, but I was penniless in the first place, so... Doesn't really matter how much it cost..." She gave a carefree chuckle before she was struck with an idea. "Hey, I have an idea! How about you spot me some cash? I'll pay to back eventually! Connie and I are starving!"
"We are not 'starving'!" The Wanyamon protested in anger. "And don't be so irresponsible to someone that you've just met!"
"Come on, we're both fragile young maidens in the vast expanse of this harsh Digital World. We gotta look out for each other, you know?" Tsubaki reasoned to her fuzzball of a partner.
"And what part of you is a 'fragile young maiden'!?" Tsubaki thought about it for a second, then clenched her fist. "Huh... I kinda wanna punch you for that..." Her fist got slapped away by the baby Digimon's tail. "And that's exactly what I was talking about! And you said that you should look out for each other, but I fail to recognize what you are offering in this set of circumstances!"
Tsubaki paused while staring at Connie. "Guess you're right..." Then she grabbed the Wanyamon off her shoulder and handed him towards Hana. "In exchange for a meal, I'll let you hold my partner for a while! His personality's kind of the worst; he's really loud and annoying, but he's really warm and fuzzy and shit!"
"And I do not consent to this! I am the shining wolf of justice! I am not some young woman's plaything to be cuddled with!"
And meanwhile, having the Keramon rush up to him had tested the Ebidramon's patience. "Excuse me, but I can sell my cakes at whatever price I want! So if none of you are going to buy anything, get going before I call the authorities!"

Hana and Data were dumbfounded as they watched Tsubaki and Connie argue back and forth with each other.
"Data? I take back every bad thing I ever said about you." Hana numbly stated.
"You haven't actually said anything bad about me that I didn't deserve, but your statement is duly noted." The Hagurumon replied. "Those two really don't get along with each other, do they?"
"No, they do not. " Hana agreed. When Tsubaki asked Hana to spot her some money, though, Hana narrowed her eyes with skepticism. "Do you really think I'm naïve enough to just give money to someone I literally just met? I'm not dumb enough to fall for that."
Hana paused briefly, before gently pushing Connie back towards Tsubaki. "However, my partners and I do have important business to take care of here in the city so I'll make you an offer. If you help us track down a digimental, then I will gladly buy you both a meal. Do we have a deal?"
"Is this really a good idea?" Data quietly whispered in Hana's ear.
When the Ebidramon, threatened to call the cops, however, Hana knew that they should get going. "Shush, Data. First, let's go somewhere that isn't here to talk. Rush, smokescreen maneuver! Tsubaki, Connie, you'll both want to hold your breath and follow me."
At Hana's command, Rush let out a giggle.
"Crazy Smoke!" Rush shouted, spewing a cloud of toxic smoke to hide the group's escape from the Ebidramon. With the smokescreen set, Hana, Data and Rush quickly ran away towards a nearby alley, while Hana beckoned for Tsubaki and Connie to follow them.

"It doesn't hurt to ask, does it?" Tsubaki answered in response to Hana's denial. She shrugged and gave her an easy smile. But she did ask for help on finding some kind of... digi-metal or whatever? Tsubaki wasn't sure what the difference between digital metal and real metal was, but if this girl needed help, who was she to deny her? "I ain't doin' anything important right now. We can help look around for a while, right, Connie?" The Wanyamon besides her nodded.
"However irresponsible she may be, we're willing to help you in your quest to locate this Digimental!" He added with a resolute tone. And that seemed settled! All there was to do was bounce and go find somewhere else! The Ebidramon clearly wanted them to leave, so all they had to do was start walking away and-
Wait... why was the Keramon letting out a smokescreen? What was the point of that? It's not like the Ebidramon was going to chase after them if they left! Even so, Tsubaki grabbed Connie shoved the fuzzball in front of her face, covering her nose and mouth while using her hands to cover his. Something told her that the limbless Wanyamon would have trouble doing so. And then Tsubaki ran after Hana and her Digimon, and once they were out of the smokescreen she gave the girl a fervent glare.
"Hey! What the hell was that all about!?" She demanded in a surprisingly serious tone compared to her previous behavior. Meanwhile, cries of pain could be heard from where they were previously.
"Oh, god! It's a poisonous gas! It burns my eyes! It hurts to breathe!" "Who throws a cloud of poisonous gas in the middle of the city? Seriously? What does that!?" "Mommy... please help me... It hurts too bad..." "Oh no... my baby!"
"What the hell's your problem!?"

At first , Hana was proud of her ingenious escape into the alleyway, but Tsubaki's harsh words, along with the pained cries of those caught in the smoke, made 15 year old quickly realize just how badly she'd messed up.
"W-w-wait, Crazy Smoke's poisonous?! I th-thought it was just a smokescreen." Hana stuttered. The poor girl had visibly gone pale and was trembling like a leaf. "Oh g-god, We just hurt all of those people. I committed an act of t-terrorism."
After that heart-wrenching realization, Hana quickly ran to the nearest trashcan in the alley and promptly threw up into it. Rush darted over to her and started rubbing her back with his hand, hoping to console his mother figure as tears ran down her face.
While that was happening, Data turned to Tsubaki and Connie with shame and regret etched onto his metal face. "We truly didn't know that Rush's smoke was poisonous. It had little effect on me when we tested it, but I see now that that was probably because a machine digimon wouldn't be affected as much by poison. We REALLY screwed up this time."

Tsubaki was all ready to throw down at that point. She wasn't sure who the hell this Hana chick thought she was, deciding to hurl around poisonous gas in the middle of town like that, but she was ready to crack as many heads as it took to knock some sense into the trio. Digimon, human, it didn't matter to her. Tsubaki wasn't afraid to take a lick or two.
But she could color herself surprised when Hana gave that much of a reaction to their sudden turn of events. And after Data's explanation, she nodded. She wasn't the type to have a cool head, but after Hana's rather visceral response to her own actions, Tsubaki had to ponder what was the right thing to do. She was used to kicking unrepentant bastards around, but people that actually regretted their mistakes? This was new territory.
And it was that moment she realized that her hands were still covering Connie's mouth. Because by the look on his fuzzy face, he had a few choice words to say to the would-be terrorists. "You foul cretins! I shall strike you down with the blade of justice for such an atrocious act!" He yelled out as he slipped free from Tsubaki's grasp. He bounced down onto the ground and was prepared to do combat with them, but Tsubaki's boot planted itself square on top of the baby Digimon.
"Down, boy!" Tsubaki warned her overzealous partner. Connie was a very black-and-white Digimon, but this situation? Definitely gray. It took her a while to think up a proper response. But then she had an idea! "Oi, Hana! Somethin' tells me you're feelin' pretty bad about what just went down, so I've got an idea!" She raised a clenched fist up and pointed it towards the fifteen year-old. "Lemme hit you real quick! So whenever you think about doin' something stupid again, you've got something to remind you to not do it, okay?"
It was crass and barbaric, but it as all the advice Tsubaki had to offer.

When the Wanyamon declared his intent to fight Hana and her partners for their mistake, Data reflexively moved between him and Hana. "Your anger is certainly understandable given the circumstances, Constance. I know I've certainly earned myself a smack on the head for my own stupidity before. However, I can't stand by and allow you to harm my family. Even though they've made a horrible mistake, it is still my duty to protect them, as both a partner and as a brother. "
"That's enough, Data."
"What?" The Hagurumon asked, turning towards the source of the voice in confusion.
Hana straightened up from where she had been hunched over the trashcan. She took a brief moment to clean her face off before calmly walking towards Tsubaki and Connie, gently pushing Data aside as she passed.
"If you want to hit me, Tsubaki, then go ahead. We both know I deserve it." Hana calmly stated, her face and voice tired and completely drained of emotion. Hana paused for a moment, before reaching into her pocket and pulling out some money. She set the money on the ground by Tsubaki's feet and said, "Here. This is the money I was going to pay you with after we found the digimental. I'm not going to hold you to are agreement after this mess, so take it."

"That is an unacceptable answer, Data!" Connie yelled out from underneath Tsubaki's boot. "Justice must be blind and impartial! Regardless of your connection to the wrongdoer, we must allow villainy must be punished, or else you become just as complicit! You have not done anything wrong, Data, but if you continue to stand in the path of justice, I must take you down as we-" He suddenly let out a yelp as Tsubaki lifted her foot off of the Wanymon, and punted the Digimon right into a nearby trash can. The same trash can that Hana had- "N-no! My lustrous fur has been soiled!" He yelled out in high-pitched of panic.
"Chill out in the trash where all your other opinions belong, Connie!" Tsubaki barked in a weirdly calm outrage. She turned to Hana and clenched her fist. She raised her fist to her. "And I'm warning you. I'm pretty strong. I've knocked dudes out twice my size with one blow before. So this is gonna hurt a whole bunch if you're not prepared. Are you sure you're ready?" But of course she was. Tsubaki didn't think there was anything she could say to talk Hana out of this. So she pulled back her fist and wound up her swing in an exaggerated manner. "Here it comes! My one-hit-kill move! The Tsubaki Black Death Soul-Crushing Strike!" She thrust her arm forward, her fist aimed directly at Hana's face!
...And then, her hand stopped just a few millimetres away as she let loose her middle finger to flick the girl in the forehead. Tsubaki then yelled at her. "As if it's gonna be that easy! If you're feeling shitty after doing something shitty, then ya gotta just live with it until you can make things right! If you think taking a punch to the face and giving away your money is supposed to make you feel better, then you've got another thing comin'!"
"That is unacceptable!" Connie yelled out, managing to climp to the top of the trashcan with his tail. There was a banana peel stuck on his head, as well as... other stuff. "Wrongdoers must be punished, or else there is no point to justi-"
"Shut the hell up, barf-breath!" Tsubaki yelled back at her fuzzy friend. "What's the point in punishing someone who wants to be punished? If you wanna be punished that bad for doing something stupid, turn yourself into the cops or somethin'! But if you made a stupid mistake then just don't do it again, got it?" She knelt down and picked up the money Hana had set down, and handed it right back to you. "And I promised to help you, so that's what I'm gonna do, got it! If you wanna repay me, treat me to a grand feast after you find your Digi-metal or whatever! And you can be sure I'm gonna eat the shit out of whatever you take me! I'll even make some holes in my belt if I have to, got it?"

Well, Hana certainly had to admit that Tsubaki's reaction had caught her off-guard. Mind reeling, she put the money back in her pocket. "Yeah, okay. Message received."
"You okay, Mama?" Rush asked with a concerned look on his face.
"Yeah, I'm doing better now. Don't worry about me, buddy." Hana replied with a small smile as she gently petted the Keramon's head. "I just have a lot to think about once we're done here."
"We do wrong?" Rush asked with a hint of confusion. The young rookie didn't fully understand what was going on, but perhaps his Mama could explain it for him?
"No, you didn't do anything wrong, Rush. You didn't know any better. This is all on me." Hana explained. When Rush nodded in understanding, Hana turned to Tsubaki. "Either way, I suppose we still have a job to do, so we might as well get to work."
While Rush and Hana were talking, Data floated over to the trash can Connie was currently standing in. "I suppose this is just where we differ, young Connie. You value justice above everything, but my family is the most important thing in both worlds to me. But this world can't purely be measured in black and white. In your haste for justice, you've failed to consider that intent matters just as much as one's actions. Hana and Rush didn't mean to hurt those people with Rush's Crazy Smoke. They had no idea that the smoke was poisonous, as our knowledge was based off of faulty and incomplete test results. What if you had attacked a perceived wrongdoer in the name of justice, only to realize that you had accidentally hurt an innocent person by mistake? What would you do, then?"

"There ya go!" Tsubaki patted the other girl on the shoulder in what was probably a comforting gesture. It wasn't something the violent young woman was used to these days, so she was pretty rusty at the whole "being kind" thing. "Next time, let's just run away instead of using a smokescreen, or maybe don't use it in the middle of town!" She gave a hearty laugh, as if to tell Hana that the past five minutes wasn't all that big a deal. Naturally, someone else disagreed.
"Nonsense! Justice exists to bring peace to the victims, and victims are created from actions, not intent!" The Wanyamon countered, glaring at the Hagurumon with an offended stare. He shook his head violently, knocking the banana peel off of his soiled fur. "And I am the shining fang of justice itself! I would not make such a simple mistake like attack an innocent person! The fact you would dare accuse me of being capable of such a horrendous deed is an insult in of itse-"
"Oi! You're killin' the mood, ya mangy, loudmouthed hairball!" Tsubaki suddenly yelled out, breaking away from Hana and Rush to kick over the trashcan that Connie was on, sending the Wanyamon sprawling along the ground along with a pile of trash. "It's always 'justice this, justice that' with you! Get a fuckin' hobby already, would ya?!"
Connie rolled back onto his bottom while glaring over at Tsubaki. "You... you... don't get to make fun of me like that!" And then he started bawling his eyes out.
"What the... are you... oh... no..." Tsubaki's eyes widened in horror as she realized what was happening.
"I just... *hic* I just wanna be a good Digimon that's nice to everyone and does good things, but everyone keeps being mean to me!" He let out another pitiful wail as tears began pouring out of his eyes. All the while Tsubaki only stared at her partner, frozen. She could handle delinquents, asshole teachers, and the occasional street thug... but throw a crying child at her? The girl had no defense against that.
"I just wanna be a good boy, but everyone is telling me that I'm not!"

Data winced as he saw the Wanyamon start crying. It seems that he'd pushed too hard with the lesson he was trying to teach the young digimon, causing the child to get the wrong message. He decided to de-digivolve to Kapurimon, and hopped towards Connie. "It seems that I wasn't clear enough about what I was trying to say. I never meant to imply that you were a bad person, Constance. Quite the opposite, in fact. Your innate sense of justice is a sign that you have a good heart. I was only trying to teach you a lesson in patience, to learn as much about the situation and those involved as possible before making a judgment about it. Things can be more complicated than they seem at first glance, and a rash, but well-intentioned judgment call can end up making things worse."
Data used the tip of his tail to try and soothe the Wanyamon. "You are NOT a bad person, Constance, and I'm sorry my words have made you feel like that. Even if you don't believe it, I really was only trying to help you."
As Data talked, Hana merely took Rush's hand and pulled him into a hug.

Thankfully Tsubaki wasn't the one who had to console a crying child. Tact wasn't one of her strengths. Neither was being gentle. So when Data de-digivolved to literally get on Connie's level and talk straight with him, she was a little relieved. And to Connie's credit, he didn't respond to the now-Kapurimon's words with disdain or conflict. He just nodded as he held back his remaining tears. And Data's words seemed to have an impact on the Wanyamon.
So naturally Tsubaki had to come ruin all of that.
"Basically, he's saying that you're too damned annoying, dude!" Tsubaki complained, picking up the fuzzball and placing him on her shoulder, puke and banana peels and all. "You're too young and stupid to try and solve all the world's problems, so if you really wanna be some kind of superhero or whatever, just focus on the obviously evil stuff for now, okay?"
"That's... but..." Connie was at a loss for words at the moment, but Tsubaki flicked him in the nose and pointed towards Hana and Rush, currently embracing.
"Hey, do those two look like bad guys to you?" She asked. Connie shook his head. Then she jerked her thumb over to the Kapurimon. "And that lil' guy made himself vulnerable just to cheer you up. Does that seem like somethin' a bad guy?"
"No... they really don't look like bad guys..." He admitted, though it seemed like he wished that it wasn't the case. He took a deep breath and bowed with his round, fuzzy body. "Forgive me if I said mean things to you! I promise that I'll reflect on this to become a true shining beacon of justice!"
"Ah... that wasn't really the answer I was hoping for, but... I guess this means you're gonna be less annoying now?" Tsubaki wondered, and before the offended Wanyamon could reply, she turned to Hana, Rush, and Data and clenched her fist. "Now... we're gonna find that metal digi thingy, right?"

Data let out a soft chuckle as he watched the conversation between Tsubaki and Connie. "That's not... exactly what I meant, Miss Tsubaki, but I suppose that I should take what I can get. And there is nothing to worry about, young Connie. I think we've ALL learned some valuable life lessons today. Now, if you'll excuse me..."
Data hopped over to where Hana and Rush were hugging, and jumped up into the center of the hug. Hana and Rush quickly adjusted to make room for the fuzzy little digimon, who had a warm smile on his face. "Ahh. Much better."
When Tsubaki mentioned the digimental they were going to look for, Hana snapped to attention and pulled out of the hug, leaving Rush to hold his brother while petting his head. "Right, I almost forgot about that! Hang on for just one little second."
Hana pulled her digivice back out and fiddled with it, pulling up the app that she'd been using earlier to track the probable digimental.
"Now let's see, according to this scanner the digimental should be... that way!" Hana explained, pointing in a direction leading away from where they entered the alley.
