Maybe it was because of her life in the city, but Airi could never get behind the idea of camping. In the human world, or in a world with alien monsters that either want to eat your face or... talk about the day's weather. The Digital World was weird. But resting inside her new Digital World's "Base of Operations" which was really just the stupid school bus that Sable had bought, Airi found she couldn't quite get to sleep. Was it because this area was way too fucking hot and the nine-year-old was sweating profusely when the night sky was glowing slightly orange because of their close proximity to a fucking volcano? Yeah, that was probably it.
Sarge was patrolling the perimeter while BLU-J was resting across the aisle, perched atop one of the seats. The tiny MailBirdramon looked like it was... preening? Well, whatever it was doing, the metal clanking the machine bird was making was a little more than annoying. But... Airi figured she could ignore it for now. She watched as Chihaya, the Tankmon resting outside, paced restlessly back and forth, as if she were expecting some kind of a fight. But Airi preferred if the psychotic machine Digimon's bloodlust remained unsated for the time being.
Which left the worst driver of the year, Mother Sable herself, sitting in the driver's seat of the bus, a glass of wine in her hand. And an almost empty bottle at her feet. She sat back lazily, looking rather... sloppy at the moment. Not nearly as "reserved" as the Sistermon Noir usually was. Well, reserved was one way to put it. Hiding behind a mask of kindness and benevolence was perhaps a better way of putting it.
"You should get some sleep, child..." the Sistermon managed to state in a slurred manner. "We've still got to find some more capable allies, and that means things will get a little dangerous. Surely you don't want to have your wits about you dulled by such petty things like imsomnia, right? I plan on sleeping after maybe having... one more glass..." She poured out whatever was left in her bottle, so much that it overfilled the glass and spilled onto her lap a little. "Oh, f-"
"Truly, an inspiration to drivers everywhere..." Airi commented angrily. "If you wanted me to get some sleep, then take me somewhere where it's less..." She looked at the volcano outside. "Uncomfortable." Sable glanced at her for a moment, before nodding and turning to the steering wheel. "Not now,! Sleep off the booze first, you idiot!"
"Mmm..." Sable seemed to ponder this for an unhealthy amount of time before finally taking stock of the situation. "Perhaps you're right, child. Unless two more of you suddenly appeared right next to you!" She gave off a mocking laugh before staggering back towards the seat in front of Airi's before stretching into a slouching position that only looked half-comfortable. But it was a school bus, so... not really much one could do about that. "Okay, it's bedtime, dear child! Time for light's out! Your little pet cyborg and Chihaya will look out for us for the time being, so just go to sleep, little one! That goes for you, too, bird."
BLU-J titled his mechanical head towards Sable for a moment, before looking back at Airi. The little girl nodded and with that MailBirdramon suddenly stopped moving as if it had just shut down. Probably because it did, or something. Airi didn't quite understand how machine Digimon worked.

Airi tried to close her eyes, but the awkwardness of her sleeping position, on top of her downright hostile environment caused her to shuffle restlessly for half an hour. She let out the occasional involuntary grunt of discomfort. "What seems to be the bother, child?" She heard Sable ask, more out of annoyance than concern.
"Shut it," She commented. "It's just... hard to sleep, is all..."
"Perhaps I should regale you with a bedtime story, then, little one?" Sable let out a drunken chuckle, while Airi groaned in protest.
"Don't patronize me, you-"
"Once upon a time there were three sisters... a pair of twins, and then their precious little sister. They lived in a small little temple in the Western Flatland. Well, it was more a dusty cabin in the desert. But we... the sisters always called it a temple."
Airi thought she heard something remotely similar before. Back when they had met... what's his face. It felt like a long time ago for the little girl. She vaguely remembered stealing his wallet, but she threw that away after taking out all the cash a long time ago, so... whatevs.
"All three of the sisters lived underneath a genuine angel Digimon that came from the land of angels. He was a tad bit strict, and didn't like one of the sisters very much just for being a... a virus Digimon, but they all managed to get along. Until one day the angel Digimon abandoned them, and left he three sisters to fend for themselves. But... they managed to make the most of it. They decided to keep their silly little temple running despite the loss of the great angel, and split their duties three ways. One of the twins was the muscle, ousting local ruffians, protecting everyone from the various ne'er-do-wells that would well... ne'er do well to us..."
That must have been Sable's sister, Azura. They met for a little bit. She seemed like a pretty decent Digimon, unlike Sable. Though she seemed a little... too straightforward? It sounded like thinking wasn't her strong suit.
"The other twin sister took to the role of administration. Logistics, all the boring, practical stuff. It wasn't the most glamorous role in the world, but she was good at it, and there was no one else around to do it."
Likely Sable herself. She could be quite attentive when she needed to be, and you know... wasn't crashing busses or getting drunk and spilling out her thinly-veiled life story. It was kind of weird for Sable to reminisce, and she had never even seen her get drunk before. Hell, she didn't even know that Digimon could get drunk.
"So... things went well at first, but then... Some things happened. One of the sisters got into a fight with their little sister, and..." Sable stopped to take a deep breath. Airi couldn't see her at this angle, but the Sistermon's voice was quivering. "When Digimon fight, sometimes things take a turn for the worse. But Ivori wasn't much of a fighter, and... she..." Sable let out a long sigh. "So the Sistermon that remained decided to burn down her own home to hide what she did from her twin sister. And it worked like a charm because the twin was nothing more than a musclehead." Sable chuckled, but it sounded sad for some reason. "She's spent the rest of her life devoted to tracking down the person who killed her little sister... and the killer is the one that sent her on that path..."

Airi wasn't sure what to say to all of that. She had always suspected something of the sort, but to hear it from Sable's lips was certainly a shock. Still... she sounded... regretful? Unless she was manipulating Airi right now. She wouldn't put it below Sable to try and get Airi to pity her a bit. Though... she wasn't sure how much pity she could give to someone who had essentially confessed to murdering their own sibling. But, Airi had to know. "So... did you regret what happened?"
There was a long pause before the little girl received a reply. "I'm not sure..." Came what seemed to be an honest answer. "I wished I hadn't done what I did, of course, but... I think what was going to happen was an inevitability. After all, we all have to learn what we're capable of sooner or later... I just wish that I had learned in a different setting..."
"I... I don't really understand..."
"And I pray that you don't for some time longer..." Sable answered with another sad chuckle. Was Sable making fun of her or something? Either way, it was irritating the little girl, but that irritation quickly melted away when Sable muttered, "I think I envy you, little one..."
"What do you mean?" Airi asked in a guarded manner.
"I think I would have been happier if I lived like you... With no one to tie you down. You've only had to look after yourself and you've managed to flourish because of it. Isolation... isn't always a terrible thing..."
Airi raised an eyebrow and leaned back in her seat, closing her eyes. "Whatever. People always want what they don't have..." She answered, crossing her arms and trying to find a comfortable sleeping position.
Sable let out an uproarious laugh before adding, "You're probably right. Good night, Ai... Sleep well, little one."
"Night, Sable..." And despite the horrendous conditions, Airi felt herself drifting off to sleep... Only to be woken up an indistinct amount of time later. There was a static-y noise, like someone left a radio on channel of just noise. Airi sat up in annoyance, Sable rising in the seat in front of her. They both turned towards BLU-J, who seemed to be letting out that noise and didn't even seem to be noticing it.
"What is all that racke-" Sable began, only to be cut off by a crystal clear voice blaring from BLU-J.
"H-hello!? I don't know if anyone can hear me, but if anyone's listening, I need your help! I've done a horrible thing and now my sister needs your help! My name is..." Her voice was cut off by some white noise, and returned a second later. "...And after I told her that, she traveled to this place to seek vengeance! There's no way she can win against him, but she said that she doesn't care! So please... if there's anyone kind and strong enough to help me... to help my sister... please save her! Please save Azura!"
"Azura!?" Airi repeated in shock. That was... Sable's sister? She turned over to her partner, only to see the Sistermon with a horrified expression and a colorless face. "Wait... Sable...?"
"Ivori..." She whispered, aghast.

The voice cut off after giving them the coordinates, and after that, it wasn't long until Sable, BLU-J, and Airi took to the skies, using the two Digimon's combined form to get a better look at their location from above. And almost as if fate were smiling upon the group, it wasn't long until they spotted a familiar mouse-hooded figure atop a plateau, standing before a strange, three-faced, four-armed figure covered in flames.
Airi pointed out her Xros Loaded towards the figure. Upgrades were handy, and with a scanner, she no longer had to have Sable explain it to her.
"Asuramon... Ultimate Level..." Airi read, looking through the chunks of flavor towards the useful stuff. "Aren't Ultimate-level Digimon really strong? Does Azura really stand a chance?"
"No..." Sable stated plainly, watching the events fold down below. They were speaking, but Airi couldn't hear what they were saying. Though Sable seemed to be able to, judging by the grimace of her face. "That idiot... why does she thing that HE'S the one responsible!?"
Azura suddenly charged forward, blade in hand, but her attack was stopped short when the four-armed figure caught her blade between two hands. Azura struggled to push forward, but couldn't find the strength to do so. Still, using her other hand, she swung out with a smaller dagger in hand... only to have her wrist caught by Asuramon's third hand. Leaving the demon man Digimon with one free hand to use as he pleased. And with it, he created a fireball and launched it into the Sistermon Ciel at point-blank range.
Azura was sent flying backwards, towards the edge of the plateau, but she stabbed her sword into the ground in order to halt her launch. It took her a second to get back onto her feet, and Asuramon didn't wait for her to get ready to attack again. Spheres of flames surrounded his fists as he punched at the air between the two combatants. The fireballs flew forwards towards the Sistermon as leaned forward and tried to push her way forward.
With impressive footwork, the Sistermon was able to avoid the spheres, but when the fireballs collided with the ground, they created a large explosion that Azura couldn't have possibly avoided. The explosions behind her, she was sent flying forward towards her opponent, but at this point she wasn't even remotely prepared to attack. She rolled across the ground coming to a stop just a few meters away from her foe, her body singed and clearly damaged.
The two seemed to share a few words with each other, causing Sable to grit her teeth again. Their conversation didn't seem to go anywhere, since the Asuramon pulled back his foot and booted the downed Sistermon even further away, once more near the cliff of the plateau. In the Xrossed Sistermon's arms, she could feel the Sistermon involuntary jerk herself forward to go help, yet caught herself before she got too far. She wanted to help, but something was stopping her. Was it because Asuramon was really strong?

"Sable... it doesn't look like that guy can fly..." Airi suggested. If we can swoop down, we can grab your sis and we can get out of here without having to fight!"
"That won't matter, child..." Sable replied. "Because Azura will just march right back here once she's recovered, even if it kills her... For some reason, she's under the impression Asuramon was the one that... What the hell!?" Any sense of poise within Sable evaporated when something else seemed to get her attention. Airi looked over to see a small, pink blob climb up to the top of the plateau, and towards the fallen Azura. She was crying out in a voice loud enough for even Airi to hear it.
"Please stop this, Azzy! No one wants this! So please don't fight any longer!" It was the same voice as the one she heard from BLU-J. Which apparently belonged to Ivori, if Sable's aghast expression meant anything. But whatever the pink blob, something Airi would later find out was called a Tokomon, didn't seem to slow down the Asuramon any. He raised all four arms up to the sky, forming a large sphere of flames above his head. And it was clear where he was intending to do with it.
"NO!" Sable suddenly yelled out, diving down towards the fray. She flew down at such speeds and abruptness that Airi wasn't able to keep up with what was going on anymore. Sable must of let go of Airi before she got to the others, because Airi suddenly found herself colliding with the ground as she tumbled across the rough dirt. Everything seemed to ache and she could barely breathe from the sudden impact. She wasn't even sure if anything was broken yet or not. And once she got her wits about her, she saw Sable flying towards Azura, the Tokomon, and the Asuramon just as he threw his massive fireball down towards the trio.
And Airi felt an incredible surge of heat fly towards her as she grasped her Xros Loader and summoned forth Sarge and Chihaya to stabilize and support her. They were out of the blast's immediate impact, but just the intense heat from the explosion alone could have done some serious damage if it weren't for the Tankmon and Commandramon covering her. Both of them let out an audible grunt of pain as it was clear they weren't up to taking another one of those any time soon.
And... if they weren't able to take a simple side effect from the Asuramon's attack... how was Sable supposed to have survived that blow? Airi watched on in horror as in front of her, a massive column of smoke obfuscated any semblance of life that may or may not have existed within the blast range of the Asuramon's massive attack.
And to make matters worse, stepping out from the smoke, stood the Asuramon who was looking directly at the little girl and her two companions. He looked over at them curiously before he began making his way towards them.
"Now a human... I've so many unwanted visitors today..." He grumbled aloud. Suddenly his head shifted around to another one of his three faces. "But to have so many challengers approach... It is a blessing..." Then his head shifted around to his third face. "But we should give mercy to this little one. She doesn't seem to be able to fight us, nor do we know if she's related to our previous assailants." He stopped for a second, only for his face to move back to the first one. "But we take no chances. This little one with face our wrath!" And his fists were alight with flames once more.

But Sarge and Chihaya weren't just willing to stand by and watch the little girl get murdered.
"Hyper Cannon!" Chihaya yelled out, aiming her cannon towards the slowly approaching Asuramon and firing. Sarge followed up by aiming is assault rifle and letting loose a barrage of bullets. But compared to the Ultimate-level Asuramon, the two Digimon were naught but flies. They didn't seem to slow the approaching Digimon in the slightest.
"Oh... shit... Welp I tried! You're on your own, you little shit!" Chihaya yelled out, driving off to the side at full speed. Sarge pulled even closer to Airi, but it was clear he wasn't up to the task.
Which meant it was time to run. But... here on this plateau, there wasn't a whole lot of space to escape to. And neither Sarge nor Chihaya were likely to get her to safety, either. So... what was the nine-year-old girl to do? That thought kept going through her mind as the encroaching demon man Digimon approached her.
"Tell me. For what purpose do these intruder seek vengeance upon me?" Asuramon asked her. And to be honest, Airi wasn't entirely sure. But... maybe there was a chance?
"I... I don't know..." She replied, nearly in tears. Which wasn't very hard to fake considering the circumstances. "I was carried here and I don't know what's going on! So please... please don't hurt me or my partners, mister!"
Asuramon paused for a moment, turning to see Chihaya the Tankmon drive into the still fuming cloud of smoke where his attack previously struck. Then he looked over towards the Commandramon who still had his weapon pointed to him, yet didn't fire. His head suddenly twisted into another face. "Mercy should be given to those without the will to fight." Only for another face to appear. "No... those who attack us must face our wrath, regardless of their guilt!" An orb of flame appeared in one of his hands, to which the little girl scooped up a handful of dirt and launched it up toward's the imposing figure's many faces!
The ultimate-level Digimon let out a groan as he unconsciously jerked back, which is when Airi took off to get some more distance away from the flaming Digimon. She was a little too panicked to think up a solution just yet, and it was clear that the Asuramon had no intention on negotiating. Which meant that Airi needed to buy more time to think up some sort of solution out of this terrible situation.
Wait... she had a Digiport now! She just needed to use it and... wait for the five-minute waiting time for it to charge! Shit! She didn't know she had to freaking charge it! She had to run away from some super-powered four-armed fiery freak for five minutes!?
"You'll regret that, child!" He suddenly heard him scream, as Airi saw her own shadow stretch out as a sphere of flame come her way. She did her best to dive out of the way, and succeeded in avoiding a direct hit, but much like when Azura attack Asuramon, the spheres exploded when they made contact with the ground and the concussive force slammed into Airi and sent her flying through the air. She let out a scream of terror and pain as she collided with the ground once more. She barely felt anything at the moment as her entire body was in shock.
Never mind staying alive for five minutes. She couldn't even survive for one. And her body was in shock after the impact, as while she barely felt the pain she would no doubt feel later, neither could she move well now. And she could hear the heavy footsteps of the approaching Asuramon.

Airi couldn't move. Couldn't think. Couldn't focus. All she could do was panic as her mind detached herself from the situation. She was in a lot of pain. There was a scary monster man coming to kill her, and she couldn't move to get away from him. All her companions were too weak to do anything, so there was no one able to stop him.
All of this... it began to feel all too real to the little girl, yet not real at all. Was this supposed to be some sort of zen shit? Well, hopefully she'd attain enlightenment soon, because she had a feeling she was gonna be going into her next life pretty damned soon. Airi heard Asuramon's footsteps come to a stop, and heard him cry out, "If only I didn't have so many hostile visitors... but I suppose that this is a mercy..." She heard a flame roar to life, but she didn't have it in her to bother looking. Airi just closed her eyes and waited for it to be over.
Which was why she was pretty confused when she heard Asuramon yell out in pain, then promptly felt something thump onto the ground next to her. She opened her eyes to see... one of Asuramon's four arms right in front of her. And suddenly, she felt the strength to look over to see... a horrifically-mangled Sistermon Ciel standing behind the Asuramon. The right side of her body seemed completely burned away, her right arm missing entirely, and most of that side had her wireframe exposed.
"...Like hell I'm gonna let you kill another defenseless child..." She managed to groan out from her clearly tortured digital frame. Her body was shaking, her voice strained. And not long after, she crumpled to the ground, unable to continue the fight she picked.
The smoke from Asuramon's previous massive attack was finally beginning to clear, and Airi could see past some of the smoke to see BLU-J sprawled out over the ground, singed and burned up, but still moving, despite his discomfort. And she saw Sable kneeling on the ground, looking rather hurt herself, and she was leaning in the arms of... another Sistermon-variant, from the looks of it. This one was white, with a pink bunny hood.
"I'm sorry, everyone... Sable... Azura... thank you for protecting me, like you both used to..." She spoke softly, yet she was able to make herself be heard despite the situation. The same voice as the Tokomon previously. "Please... I hope I can make things better like this... Sacred Wave!!!" She thrust a trident into the ground, and a wave of pink luminescence swirled throughout the battlefield. The light flowed into the two other Sistermon and BLU-J, and just a bit, they looked like they were just a bit healthier. Hell, Airi felt a bit of it herself. Though Azura was still unconscious. And armless. That might be a problem in the future.

"There is another one!?" The Asuramon managed to yell out, despite missing one quarter of his arm. And it was then that Airi's Xros Loader began to react to this new developmon. Three lights shone forth from her Digivice, shooting off towards the newcomer Sistermon, towards a Tankmon that was currently trying to figure out how to get down from this damned plateau, and towards a Commandramon that was trying to hide in the remaining smoke while keeping his weapon aimed at the Asuramon. Then the lights flew together into a triple-helix of light and formed...
A similar-looking Sistermon, but with a tankmon helmet and hands and an outfit resembling Sarge's. "I am very sorry that my sister attacked you, Mr. Asuramon, but I do not want you to hurt her or anyone else here!" The Sistermon spoke out in a soft, yet proper voice. "Please allow us to leave and we will bother you no further!"
Asuramon continued to look befuddled at the current series of events, before realizing some crazy bitch came in and sliced his arm off. "No... there is no mercy! There is only... WRATH!!!" He yelled out, stampeding towards the strangely accessorized little Sistermon. And yet when he moved in towards her... she suddenly vanished. Whirled around, using all three faces to look around, but the newcomer was nowhere to be found.
Until she was.
"I am ever so sorry for resorting to violence like this..." She suddenly stated, appearing behind Asuramon... then firing off a massive blast from the Tankmon cannon from her hood. Asuramon let out a surprised yelp, then got blasted off far, far, into the distance. And with a sigh of relief, the Sistermon suddenly split back up into herself, Chihaya, and Sarge once more, with the Sistermon moving over towards Airi and helping the little girl sit up. She didn't look to be all that much older-looking than Airi, really.
"Hello, it is nice to meet you! You're Sable's human partner right?" She gave the little girl a warm smile and gently grabbed her hand. "My name is Ivori... and I think we have a lot to discuss... but let's get everyone else to safety first, okay?"
Airi blinked a couple of times, then nodded along. She wasn't really in a position to go against the little girl Digimon that seemed to effortlessly blow away the Asuramon that was giving them so much trouble... though she seemed to have borrowed her Digivice's power to do it. So... did that mean that this Ivori lady was Airi's partner now? And she mentioned something about being Sable and Azura's sister, as well. So she was the little sister that got... well... dead by the hands of probably-Sable? Airi had so many questions, but seeing BLU-J, Sable, and Azura unconscious like that... plus there was a chance that Asuramon could come back and attack them again if they stuck around for too long. So... it was best to get out of here, right?
So Airi would get her answers eventually. And a couple new partners to boot. Sable would be reunited with her sisters, and their family would get even larger. Though for Airi, things seemed to get even lonelier now.
