Eighty seven percent of Digimon would have been dying from the cold, but for one fluffy fox, this was just a typical morning in the snow. With that fluff covering him, he was as cozy as could be.
Shimo, like many, was a true creature of habit. He had the same routine every morning, waking up in the small hut he called home, collecting firewood in order to get the place warm, and then maybe find some breakfast. He had this same exact by the book paint by number regimen every day, every morning for as long as he could remember. Shimo never saw the need to change that routine because he didn't know otherwise. What else was he to do besides follow his morning chores?
The fox knew every inch of his land here. In fact some might say he knew his way all around the mountain in general, but that was a stretch, as the fox was not much to adventure outside his territory.
Seeing random beings up here was unusual to begin with. Most of the time it was tourists that strayed too far or the occasional researcher. As long as they let him be and didn't take his things, Shimo was usually fine with the strangers nosing around in his territory.
In fact he would have been completely fine with Gio nosing around were it not for the fact that large lizard like Digimon were very out of place here. It was a strange dent to his morning ritual that change all of his routines from right there on out.
"Morning! Are you alive there?" Shimo gave the slumped over Guilmon a gentle poke with a paw, wondering yet again how, why and even such a creature ended up all the way here. "If you are moping or tired, I suggest not doing it out here. It's going to snow again soon and you've no fur like me to prevent frostbite!"
If Gio looked up, he would see a pair of sharp purple eyes surrounded by a fluffy face looking directly down at him in a mix of bewilderment and concern.

It was almost funny, so many times Gio had lost his way wandering out and about before today, and many of those times what started as a confusing but otherwise normal day quickly turned into one of agony and heartache, thoughts and feelings flooding his mind as he thought of every possible bad outcome.
What if Carlos and Dio hurt themselves while looking for him? What if he lost his way even more trying to reunite? What if he was to be all alone forever? Of course it was all usually short lived and filled with an unmeasurable feeling of peace once he actually saw the others again but that didn't change how utterly miserable he had felt.
Yet this time it felt...oddly liberating? Not having someone checking where and when he went to have a nap was a nice change of pace. Sure there was nobody to listen or reply to his rambling, but it sure beat being talked down to when they didn't quite get what you were trying to say. Though as he glanced around himself in this rocky landscape, he could also feel a slight hint of...emptiness? Like something was missing.
Though the ensuing growling of his stomach quickly made him realize there was a very different kind of emptiness within him right now.
"Guh." He fell on his rump on the rocky mountain soil. Maybe he should head back and try to ask for sandwiches back at that village he had passed on the way...if he could remember where that village even was that is. He yawned a bit, gazing at the cloudy sky for a bit, his body and mind suddenly being flooded by a wave of drowsiness. Maybe this was a good place for a quick nap.
He dug his claws into the rock a couple of times, the now glowing red hot extentions of his hand lightly heating the ground underneath him to try and fight away the cold for a while before he carefully layed down his head over his arm, looking not unlike a cat rolling itself into a loaf of warmth and sleep.
And sleep was exactly what he did, his snores eventually overtaking the growls of his empty tummy. He didn't know how long he managed to sleep, but judging by the grogginess he felt as a voice quietly spoke to him, it couldn't have been long enough, if such a thing even existed for sleep cycles.
"Hmm?" He slowly opened his eyes, blinking a couple of times as he tried to adjust to the light...only to find a pair of eyes looking at him from really close.
"Wah!" He jolted back, eyes wide open as a bit of smoke spewed from his mouth as he yelped in surprise as he hastily retreated a feet or two, his body moving before his mind could properly register what was happening. Once far enough away he'd stare at the fox for a bit, trying to ease his panicked breathig as his mind started to settle, realizing that this fox was not an immediate threat. What followed obviously was a sense of relief...and embarrasment.
"S-sorry, you scared me mister fox mon." He said, looking down as he relaxed his stance and sat down. One of the unfortunate side effects of being alone in the wild was that being woken up usually meant trouble. He had learned that lesson the hard way once or twice by now, as evidenced by a couple of minor cuts and bruises alongside his arm and chest. Right now however that wasn't the case, so he was left to ponder and be puzzled by Shimo's questions. "Uhm, Gio feels very much still alive yes, so foxmon shouldn't worry. I'll just..."
Before he could say anything else he found himself interrupted by the growling of his stomach yet again. "Uhm...excuse me mister, but if that's the case do you know where I could nap? And eat? Gio's not very good with the cold and...doesn't really know where he is right now..."

The heat that radiated off the Guilmon through what Shimo could feel on his paw suggested that he was not quite injured or sick, but rather completely out of his element. He had to get him out of this cold quickly, but how? He was almost twice the fox’s size! Ah well, wouldn’t hurt to try right? Shimo might have been small, but all that log hauling kept his muscles nice and strong. “Come come, this weather isn’t doing you any favors. My home isn’t much but there’s ample room for you.” The fox didn’t know why he was so vested in this creature’s wellbeing, maybe because he didn't see a lot of living things up here, or he just couldn’t bear to see such a pitiful soul freeze to death alone out here.
Whenever Shimo went down to the village to procure supplies, he’d often be grilled by its residents about if he was lonely on the summit. Truth be told, the fox didn’t ever consider himself to feel that way. He had yet to experience enough companionship to actually know what being lonesome was truly like. How could one feel alone if they were not aware of how such a thing felt? You had to know lonely to feel lonely.
The smoke made Shimo automatically think something was on fire and so he as well jumped back, reflexively swooshing his tails in as if attempting to cover a flame with the wet snow. “Watch it with that! There’s a lot of wind up here, one strong fireball and this whole forest can burn.” Shimo probably sounded a bit grumpy but it was better for him to know than for him to accidentally cause the next great big blaze. The more Gio revealed his body language and tone, the more the fox realized that he was basically a child. A very large one at that, but a child nonetheless. Which brought him to the next concern. How had someone who was obviously immature found themselves in a place as barren as this? Perhaps his mother had abandoned him here, that was something that happened with reptilian digimon it seemed more often than not, in order to ‘toughen’ them up. Nonetheless, Shimo decided it was best to ask that later than sooner.
“I have some fish drying out if you fancy that. And some soy marinated eggs.” The fox padded right up to Gio, smelling him a bit. He carried a trail similar to that of a barbecue or toasted coals. “I’m not sure what your kinfolk actually eat, but do note we’re not picky up here. This isn’t the land of lushness as you can see.” It wasn’t that food here was scarce, it was just that what you could get and grow in this terrain was limited to some hardy vegetables and the fish from the random bodies of water, who even sometimes were hard to catch if they burrow at the bottom of the lake on colder days. “Can you walk right now? There’s a sled I use for hauling things I can bring back here. If not...” The fox jumped onto a nearby stone ledge, swishing his tails before jumping down again. “Feel free to follow me!”

The black scaled lizard beamed at the fox, a bit taken aback by such a show of generosity but glad to be getting such all the same. "Yes sir, thanks sir!" He fought against his more base instinct that wanted him to straight up glomp the little digimon, knowing full well that could be considered rude or disrespectful by those that didn't know him well. At least that's what Carlos always told him, and despite whatever new found feelings he had towards the man he could still find worth in his teachings.
His wing like ears drooped however as Shimo scolded him, looking downcast as the fox urged him against accidentally burning anything with his breath. Hmph, like he could really do that! It was so cold even if he could actually create fire he would probably find it impossible.
"I-I'm sorry...it's ok though, I can't make real fire, just smoke and embers." He tried to add, somewhat undermining his apology a bit, so he kept quiet as he waited for the subject to be dropped soon. Though that quickly went away as soon as the mention of food cropped up, his mouth practically flooding as if he could already picture the look and smell of dry fish. Dio didn't seem to be hugely into it but Carlos was always eager to get Gio some...at least before.
"Don't worry mister, Gio isn't picky either! Fish, meat, fruit, whatever you have I'm sure it's all yummy." He reassured him with an energetic nod, following after the fox digimon. "I can walk just fine! Want me to carry you there, sir? Mountain's kinda steep."

Gio’s sad little face immediately made the fox regret being a bit curt, flapping his tails a bit as if unsure how or if he should apologize. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to be snippy. I’m n-not good with people. I’m not really acclimated to socializing this much for this long.” He was used to having a hello and goodbye relationship with the villagers. Come to think of it, he had no idea how one interacted with people beyond basic communication of requirements. Luckily Gio didn’t seem like a nitpicky type, so this was a perfect place to start.
Honestly, the fox was so endemically isolated that he probably had no idea how chemistry worked, except that fire burned wood, so he always assumed that if the woods caught flames, it would spread. And that any warm-blooded creature knew how to make fire. Again, he didn’t know much besides what was on this mountain, it wasn’t like they had much access to the outside world all the way up here. Many of them weren’t even fully aware that the world of humans existed. If they did, they didn’t care enough to inquire about it, too comfortable in their own lives. It was a sentiment Shimo both shared and didn’t share. See, he was very comfortable in his routine, and yet there were times he’d look out over the summit while wondering just what even was beyond this mountain.
“That’s good because we don’t have much to pick from up here.” Admittedly Shimo was taken aback by his offer and normally would have politely declined. He had too much pride to be carried around like a stuffed animal but yet, he felt he needed some way to make up for making him sad before. He could tell the lizard had come a long way and hated that he might have contributed to that sadness. “Just this once you may. But don't run too fast, because if you slip I will too! My house is straight ahead, can’t miss it.” Or could he? This was Gio we were talking about. “So tell me, how did one who is warm-blooded like yourself end up here? Mom dropped you off so you could learn survival? Strayed from your family?”
If Gio went the right way, they’d come up to a modestly sized hut with a chimney and a few racks and such outside for hanging things. If not well...they’d get there eventually.

"Oh...It's ok! Gio is...not really good with people either, I...I don't know if they usually know what to say to me." The lizard was quick to reply, trying somewhat awkwardly to reassure the fox mon that he was not at fault. Truth be told he felt it hard to gauge just how to talk with others.
Well, talking wasn't the real problem, really he could drone on for hours on end if given the chance! But he wasn't really sure if that was a real communication or just a one sided conversation. People didn't usually seem to engage with him on an equal level, never fully slowing down for him to catch up but never quite going "fast" enough for him to get lost in their words either. They just...tended to acknowledge him and that was that. There were exceptions too but it almost felt like everyone else had something else to pay attention to besides him.
"Yay! Don't worry, I'll be careful. Gio is used to carrying other mons." He soon exclaimed with glee, picking Shimo up with force and placing him on his shoulders in a single swift move, letting him down in such a way his upper body could comfortably lay against the back of his scaly head. He even had makeshift "reins" in the form of his two wing like ears! Though Gio would very much rather he didn't use them as such. His pain tolerance was high sure but not that high! Either that or those were a particularly weak spot for whatever reason.
As he set out in the general direction set by Shimo, he'd try to look up to glance at the fox, before remembering how futile of an effort that was before stopping, less he accidentally make the mon fall because Gio tried too hard to look at his own head.
"Oh...that." He paused for a moment, as if thinking for a good way to respond but really he just...didn't really want to answer. In the end however he didn't want to leave the fox hanging either, so with a heavy sigh he'd finally reply. "...never really met my mom so that's not it. I did have Lady Mistress but...she's also gone. My brother and his tamer took me in . But we all kinda ran from eachother..."
