Alucard was feeling a little more his normal self since his encounter with GrandDracmon. While he was only slightly worried about losing himself it hadn't happened yet so with his evolution to Reapmon it seemed his dark nature was in balance. Now was time to do something other than act like a zombie. Sure he would always regret what happened when he almost destroyed a village and murdered his son but he was slowly healing from the mental scars it left behind.
Both he and Poseidon were on their way to investigate a strange glitch that was spewing odd creatures. While the creatures were contained by various digimon surrounding the parameter of the glitch, there job was to investigate inside it and maybe shut the glitch down from within.
Upon reaching the glitch Alucard looked down at Poseidon and said "Be on your guard from this point on, Poseidon. We have no idea what dangers lie ahead."
"I will, Dad." Poseidon stated looking ready for business despite his tail wagging somewhat. He was glad to hear his dad be more like his normal self cold sounding voice and all.
The Angemon and Gomamon both knew they needed to say nothing else as the pair stepped forward and into the glitch feeling the energy flow through their bodies but seemingly causing them no physical harm. However when they made it through the glitch something was wrong. Not only were they smaller then they were when they entered, their center of gravities were vastly different.
"What's going on! I've reverted to Bukamon and Dad you've you've reverted to Kokomon! We're back to our in training stage! What do we do?! What do we do?!" Poseidon shrieked out in a panic causing Alucard to glare at him in annoyance before looking at himself and sure enough not only Poseidon was Bukamon but he was Kokomon.
Deciding panicking wouldn't help Alucard ignored Poseidon for the moment, though his son was much quieter in his panicked state after he shrieked out his distress, he then approached the glitch and attempted to pass back through it before being repelled back. "Seems like the passage was one way." Alucard stated sounding calm despite being worried.
"What?!" Poseidon shrieked again causing Alucard to grunt in discomfort.
Deciding his poor ears had enough he hopped directly in front of his son and, in a stern voice, said "Poseidon, that's enough. I don't know what caused this but perhaps if we figure out the cause of the glitch we can reverse this."
"Reverse this? How? We're in training digimon?" Poseidon asked clearly upset but fortunately no longer shrieking anymore.
"Yes Poseidon, I am quite aware of this problem but if we're careful I'm sure we can figure this out." Alucard said as he hopped off Poseidon floating behind him. Alucard looked at the sky and it seemed about an hour till sunrise, maybe two. Though he had no idea why he was checking the time. Maybe it was because it had become a nervous habit since he and Poseidon hunted vampires.
Though there was racket from the digimon battling the odd creatures still going on outside the father and son moved on since they couldn't get out the way they came. After traveling for a short time they spotted what looked like a small mansion in the center of the barrier the glitch seemed to create. Dad, what do you think? Should we find some method of entering this mansion? Maybe we can find something inside that will get rid of the glitch."
Alucard thought for a moment before he answered "Perhaps but like I said before I need you to be on guard incase their is something dangerous in the mansion."
"Even if there was wouldn't we have to play a cat and mouse game while searching around since we're not very strong in our current forms." Poseidon said fluttering his flippers in his agitated state.
"I hate to say this but we'll deal with what may be in there when it comes up. Let's look around for an entrance point and then work from there." Alucard said before the two of them went in opposite directions looking for a way inside.
After looking around for awhile the two of them met by the door. Alucard looked at the door for a moment before throwing his weight against it with his squishy body making a dull thud sound but the door didn't so much as move in the slightest. Alucard then looked at Poseidon or more specifically his wing like flippers before an idea entered his head. "Poseidon, use your flippers to move the door knob while I throw my weight into the door again. Maybe between the two of us we can get the door open."
Poseidon nodded and floated to the door knob which was gold in color with intricate Chinese dragon patterns all over it before wrapping his flippers around the door knob and giving it a hard twist while Alucard had hopped back before throwing his full weight at the door once again with a dull thud. Yet between the two of them the door barely opened with an audible creak. Then Alucard and Poseidon made their way inside looking around seeing various items of seemingly high value but there was one thing the entire entrance had in common which was heavy amounts of dust. Then again the whole mansion was likely nothing more than a decorated dust trap.
Father and son looked around the dust making the pair crinkle their faces before releasing several sneezes due to the dust. When the sneezing stopped, Poseidon looked around once again before he said "Now that we're in here I wonder what we're looking for. For that matter it could be anywhere in this mansion or even outside still."
"One thing concerns me more, Poseidon." Alucard said causing Poseidon to turn and face his father in a silent cue for the Angemon reverted into a Kokomon to continue "I'm beginning to think there is a reason for the glitched barrier to not only be one way but the fact that it let monsters out and trapped us in our in training forms."
"You have a point, Dad. Oh and I hated to admit it at the time but I haven't been able to digivolve back into my rookie form since my strength seems weaker." Poseidon said scrunching his face in thought.
"I feel the same weakness too, Poseidon, but I think what ever the cause is something artificial in this area. Call it a hunch if you will." Alucard said taking a few hops forward dust floating up into the air as he did so making Poseidon sneeze. "If it helps you, Poseidon, I suggest you float a little higher to stay out of range of the dust but keep me in sight just incase something strange happens."
Poseidon did as his father suggested and floated up a little higher. It was if Alucard's instincts were screaming at him though no physical danger had presented itself as of yet. Picking up on Alucard's wariness Poseidon tapped into the instincts his father taught him how to tap into.
As the two of them turned a corner something was going on upstairs as a creature with rotting pale skin with barely existent stringy silver hair. It was wearing tattered rags surprising seeing as this creature was inhabiting a mansion in the middle of nowhere. At least that fact would be surprising if one didn't understand that the Digital World and weird went hand in hand. The creature seemed stiff using hopping as a means of moving around. It could sense the life force of two intruders and was hopping as fast as it could despite not seeming to be very fast. Speed, however, had never been necessary to the creature since all it had to catch for the last few centuries was small squishy lifeforms foolish enough to investigate the mansion and as a result of a digimon's large amount of life force at seemingly any age, the creature was well nourished as well as strong and it would send its minions to lure prey in when the glitch appeared every few years. It knew all it needed was the life force of a couple more of these small weak creatures to be strong enough to leave the barrier and feed on stronger prey.
Meanwhile both Alucard and Poseidon had found their way to a library filled with many books. Though not paying attention in particular to the books since they were looking for something that could of created the glitch one word caught Poseidon's attention and he floated over to where Alucard was and asked "Hey, Dad, what's a jiangshi?"
Surprised at Poseidon's question Alucard spun to look at his son nearly giving himself the in training equivalent of whiplash before he asked "Where did you learn that word?" He knew he had not covered the subject of a jiangshi with Poseidon.
"I saw it on one of the books. So what is a jiangshi?" Poseidon asked once again.
Alucard sighed before he said "I suppose as my son and my apprentice you would learn this sooner or later. A jiangshi is a type of vampire known as the hopping vampire." Poseidon began snickering at the name hopping vampire and when he stopped Alucard continued "Yeah I know something called the hopping vampire doesn't sound scary but, as I taught you, all vampires are potentially dangerous and should never be underestimated when you have to fight them."
"I hope we don't have to fight anything in here until we can digivolve again. I'm not found of the idea of fighting while we're in a vulnerable state." Poseidon said as the two of them began looking around again. After the search through the library proved fruitless they decided to look around in other rooms and began heading out of the library.
Just then a hand with long fingernails much like claws came into sight and Poseidon floated down and backwards resulting in the claws getting caught in the library's door frame. Alucard hopped back and Poseidon, as if forgetting about the dust, was sitting next to Alucard. Like his father he was watching the creatures every move as the foul smell of rotting flesh came from the creature. "What in the Digital World is that thing? That can't be a digimon." Poseidon exclaimed his eyes wide in horror.
"You're right about it not being a digimon. That, Poseidon, is a jiangshi." Alucard explained as the said jiangshi pulled its clawed talons free from the door frame and began advancing on the father and son. "Listen to me, Poseidon, I need you to hold your breath and make a break for the doorway. Whatever you do don't release your breath until we get some distance from the creature."
Figuring that Poseidon would listen as the two held their breath while waiting for the right time to move as the jiangshi seemed confused. Alucard nodded to Poseidon and the two scrambled out of the library as fast as they could only taking in a breath when they were well out of sight of the library's doorway. "What was that about? Why couldn't he sense us when we were holding our breaths?"
"The jiangshi is a being that survives by sucking out a victims life force itself not blood. The reason it couldn't detect us when we held our breath was because since we weren't breathing it was as if we weren't alive." Alucard explained as they made their way down the hall. Then Alucard felt a faint humming sensation coming from the floorboard his body happened to touch down on. Wiggling his ears he heard something that sounded like a machine. Looking up at Poseidon, he said "Poseidon, tug on the floorboard when I move. I think there is a hidden room below us." When he moved Poseidon lowered himself to the floor and used his flippers to tug on the board and it seemed that his father was right as the board moved with little effort and between the two of them they moved the board aside and leapt in the hole they made. As Alucard dropped Poseidon caught him and lowered him to the floor safely.
The hidden room was pitch black except for the faint hint of light coming in from above but before they could wonder on how they would be able to search for anything, Poseidon's holy ring around his neck began glowing basically making him akin to a flashlight so the pair could slowly make their way around the room before finding a light switch on a wall. Poseidon flipped it filling the room with light and his holy ring ceased glowing. "Huh, I didn't know I could function as a flashlight as a result of having a holy ring." Poseidon stated confusion clear on his face but the movements of the jiangshi were heard once again. "I hope we find a solution to that glitch barrier soon. I don't want to be near our new friend for longer than we have to."
Alucard didn't respond to Poseidon's words but agreed with not wanting to deal with the jiangshi for longer than they had to. Looking around the room the duo saw the source of the machine humming in the corner of the room and it was in the form of a curious metallic silver box. Poseidon floated over to the box as began looking it over as Alucard said "This explains the modern methods of lighting the mansion besides the electric lights. It was powering this thing."
Poseidon had one of his flippers resting on the box as he was looking it over before he asked "Could this box be the source of the glitch barrier, Dad?"
"Most likely. Now the trick is how to disable it." Just as Alucard finished those words the wood above them cracked causing Poseidon to shriek from the sudden sound.
Poseidon's shriek had an unintentional side effect as the flipper he had resting on the box brushed against a panel accidentally pulling it open. As this was happening he stumbled forward pulling some wires out. "Oops." he said when he realized what happened.
Alucard looked in Poseidon's direction seeing the aftermath of Poseidon's scare. It seemed Poseidon't oops wasn't so bad as the two of them felt as if their strength was beginning to return. Before Alucard could even speak his thoughts on the matter the sound of the floor from above was cracking again before the jiangshi dropped down from above landing in front of them with a loud thump. Before he could tell Poseidon to float away he and his son felt a rush of power as they began glowing with the light of digivolution before returning to the forms of Angemon and Gomamon respectively. It seemed whatever wires Poseidon accidently pulled were the ones that kept them as their in training forms.
The jiangshi began to back up as the odds were no longer in its favor with a champion and rookie level digimon staring it down. "Let's see how tough you are when the prey can fight back. Marching Fishes!" Poseidon said as many small fish were launched at the vampire's face while Alucard made his way behind the jiangshi on foot. As for the jiangshi, it merely batted away Poseidon's attack as if it were a mere annoyance. Poseidon began moving away from the machine before he said "Okay so you aren't a fan of sushi."
Now that Alucard was behind the vampire he drew back his fist but didn't charge any holy power into it before smashing his fist into the back of the jiangshi's head. The blow sent the jiangshi flying forward hitting face first into the machine. "That looked like it hurt."
As if not deterred by Alucard's punch the vampire hissed and got up turning to face the Angemon in rage. Alucard channeled his holy power forming a bow and arrow made out of the very energy he channeled. Drawing a bead on the jiangshi, he said "Sacred Bow!" The arrow of holy energy flew forth hitting the vampire in the shoulder sending it flying backwards into the machine pinning it there. The jiangshi howled in pain as Alucard's holy power dissolved the creature from existence and the machine began sparking.
Alucard scooped up Poseidon and used his Hand of Fate to blow holes in the walls until he took off flying before the mansion exploded in a violent fashion. From the air they were able to see not only the burning remnants of the mansion but the remains of the monsters that came from the glitch barrier. As for said barrier it was as if it never existed in the first place despite the other evidence to the contrary around them. Deciding to leave Alucard flew from the area while holding firmly onto his son. As the area passed from their sight the beauty of the rising sun indicating a new day. Alucard couldn't help but smile at the simplistic beauty making him remember that not everything was as dark and cruel as some of his memories.
