Whitewater City! This beachfront metropolis was the perfect place for a gal to find both paying work and treasure to pocket! All these digimon, all these pockets! All kinds of pretty hats and scarves, trinkets and baubles, and of course who could forget all the wonderful food! This was a city positively alive! Truly, was there was no better a place for Mae-Mae, who wandered about in abject wonderment. She couldn't believe how long it took here to reach this wonderful place and, without much issue, had been quickly swindled out of the vast majority of her bits for what amounted to a snorkel subsystem from Surfimon's Super Surf Shack, a radio from Mamemon Music, and a funny little gun with a claw out the other end from some shady fellow in a big coat, who were, at least to Mae-Mae's mind, the best things to trade with as they always had the funkiest gizmos!
The expenditure didn't bother her though, few things really did. She was happy to make the trade of bits for things, and really, how could one come to a beautiful seaside city and not waste all their money! It made sense to Mae-MAe, what else were you supposed to do? Not spend all your money? Of course not! Of course, this meant Mae-Mae was also now out of money. Once she'd realized this fact the lopmon's eye welled up with watery despair.
"Waaaaahhhhhaaa~" she'd cry, apropos of nothing. "Mae-Mae hah-aaaaahs no moooooneeeeeeey!" she'd cry, rubbing her teary eyes with her floppy ears. "I gotta, like, now I gotta find a job or somethin'..." she'd whimper to herself whilst she dried her tears.
To that end, Mae-Mae sought out employment, more by trying to flag down bystanders and asking them if they knew where she could get some money. Everyone she asked would point her to a shop, or a cafe, or an inn, or a food truck, or a surf shack. While Mae-Mae was certainly qualified to serve people food, or drinks, or carry things to people's bungalows, or even show them surfboards she wasn't as interested in actually "working" so much as she was interested in getting money. It was at Surfimon's Super Surf Shack where she met the proprietor.
"I see... so you like, seek your fortunes not from like, the shackles of society, but like, from like, the ambient wealth of the universe that we lose sight of, in our pursuit of corporate satisfaction..." the blue digimon had intoned thoughtfully, looking over the ocean, his board at his side and Mae-Mae in his crossed lap.
"Exactly! Like, Mae-Mae wants money, and like, Mae-Mae could like totally do the whole "job" thing? But like! Whenever Mae-Mae does do that, Mae-Mae gets fired for taking things home!"
Surfimon nodded sagely "Many institutions don't appreciate the displacement of their products, especially to their employees. What you need is a job that fulfills your needs for income, and for material possession." he'd contemplate. "Have you, like, thought about getting a warrant of salvage from the city? They like, pay people to clean up the beach and the nearby waters of whatever, like, whatever stuff makes it way there? You get to keep whatever you find too, and they pay you."
This news brought Mae-Mae to turn and look up at the surfer digimon with a starry-eyed stare of wonderment "Really?! Why hasn't anyone told Mae-Mae about this?!"
The man nodded and gestured at the shack behind him, a sizeable van with various surfboards leaning against it, and filling it. "That's how I got this van! I found it like, sunk out in the water, dragged it back, and got it like, restored and stuff."
"Woooah... so cool..." Mae-Mae marveled in wonder.
"I owe my livelihood to whatever dude threw out this van... You might find a van too! Ya never know what you'll find when you put yourself out there."
"Then we could like! We could be like van fam!" Mae-Mae exclaimed eagerly.
Surfimon didnt seem too excited at that idea. "Don't like, don't ruin a good thing, kid. You like, you gotta be you, ya know?"
This did nothing to change Mae-Mae's mind, she was settled, and once the small bunny's mind was made up few things could change it. She'd go get the warrant thing, and salvage a van and all kinds of other stuff! A short drive to a government building with Surfimon later, Mae-Mae had a funny little gun. It scanned things, apparently! All she had to do was point her gun at something, scan it, and select "Compress" or "Claim". With it in hand, Mae-Mae made her way back to the beach with Surfimon. Mae-Mae glanced out at the ocean with her new "friend" wondering just how she was going to get out there. She could probably paddle pretty ok with her ears, but that was tiring...
How could I get out there and back with treasure if I was just all by myself... she'd thought to herself. Then the idea dawned on her.
"Hey Surfimon? Can your van swim?"
The answer was no. But Surfimon was more than happy to let Mae-Mae borrow a small surfboard for her excursion. With the surfboard held above her head by her strong fluffy ears she bid him a fond farewell as she began her quest for a loot.
Coincidentally, Mae-Mae's earlier purchase of that scuba system from Surfimon's shop helped her a great deal, and paddling out to less than shallow waters proved pretty fruitful in terms of loot, made all the easier to gather with that grapple gun. This, and the radio she got all served to help with breaking up the monotony of compressing all the garbage into a .zip file for the city to delete. She'd hum to herself, skipping along the sandy beach, singing (quite poorly) to whatever was on the radio.
"We're the kids in Aaaaamerica~" Mae-Mae sang out, never having heard of any zone called "America" in the digital world, but put it on her list of places to visit!
With a fair collection of goodies claimed and a wealth of garbage compressed and night falling on Whitewater City it was a good time to turn in. As Mae-Mae wandered along the shore she considered keeping the board Surfimon had let her borrow. After all, he had a whole lot of them and he had already given it to her and they were definitely friends now, surely he wouldn't mind? Plus, she technically found it, by finding him! She was allowed to keep the things she found... and what were the odds she'd ever see him again, honestly? She gazed at the silhouette of the surfing sage and his van.
If she turned around, right now, she could keep the board, go surfing or snorkeling whenever she pleased... Forever...
"Hey! Hey Surfimon! Are you, like, closing up? Can you like, gimme a ride back to the office place thingy?" Mae-Mae called out, waddling at speed toward the digimon, waving a hand at him.
Surfimon was more than happy to do so, and Mae-Mae was more than happy to trade a small surfboard for a brand new friend.
