Ahhh, today was a nice day in Rosewood - or at least, today was a nice day in Makoto's opinion. The sounds of rain outside were soothing, with one of the windows cracked open just a hair to let in that nice smell that came with such - and though it might not have been pleasant to be in the rain, everything else about it was right up the Renamon-X's alley as they went about tidying up the house; dusting the shelves as they idly hummed to themself. In weather like this, there was nothing better than getting chores around the house all squared away.
And on top of such, they had something to look forward to, when they were all done - some soup, bubbling in the slowcooker that sat on the kitchen counter. It was Cheddar and Broccoli soup - or at least, as close as Makoto could get to it with digital world ingredients; sometimes there were things that weren't an exact 1:1, but they liked to think that they got this recipe down pat by now, even if they had to substitute some of the real world ingredients in the process. And they made some biscuits to go with the soup, too..!
"Ah, I wonder if we couldn't have some visitors, once the weather clears up a little." Makoto mused to Kuro, as they moved to dust a painting they had on the wall. "Sharing some soup, all curled up in warm blankets, while watching a movie... What could be better than that?"
<Maybe... We could invite Kitt?> Kuro mused, thoughtfully. <Or Toki? I like him, too...>
"They're such sweet fellows, aren't they?" Makoto responded with a chuckle, idly tapping their chin with a claw. "I wonder how dear little Kitt has been, in particular - it's been a little while since we've caught up with the darling..." Perhaps he was on another exciting adventure right this second - and oh, they would love to hear the stories that would come with such an adventure. Even if it was more exciting to experience them firsthand, Makoto enjoyed curling up with a good story just as much.
Little did the fox know though, that there would come a visitor - just, perhaps, not the sort of visitor that Makoto was expecting...

"I should have asked Shimo for an umbrella instead..." Gio complained for what had to be the fifth time that day. How could you blame him, having been stuck under the rain for at least two days now? Which was plenty bad on it's own, but the fact he couldn't keep the egg he was carrying around completely dry, even when he wrapped his brown poncho around it. There was just too much water for him to realistically stop without a roof over his head.
"I'm sorry, maybe we should have stayed in that cave." He said apologetically to the small black and white oval, softly petting it with one hand as he walked down the streets of Rosewood. He had been drawn to the place...well really he had just stumbled blindly into it, but he figured a change from all the wilderness from before was more than welcomed. Even if he had to sleep on the street, it was marginally more safe than risking falling asleep in the middle of the jungle with a frail egg in tow.
As he soon found out however, randomly knocking on people's doors was proving to be a fruitless endeavour. Either he found himself being shooed away by people mistaking him for a salesmon, or at best got some stray pity bits from the more concerned looking residents. That was nice and all, but unless everyone in the block gave him the same amount of money it would hardly be enough for a meal, let alone a room at a hotel. Even Gio and his limited knowledge on money understood that much. Still he didn't let this dissuade him, now even more determined to not spending another night under the rain.
Eventually he found himself wandering close to a particular house that had it's windows open. And from within it, he could feel the faint smell of food being cooked inside, which led to memories of having dinners along side Carlos and his brother. Happy memories to be sure, but right now he didn't want to be reminded of that. Yet without quite knowing how, he was now standing right in front to the front door to said house. Figuring he might as well try, he gave the door a knock with one hand, tightly grasping the egg under his free arm meanwhile.
Once the door opened, he'd find a greyish renamon waiting on the other side. Gio gave a respectul nod with his head before speaking up,
"Hi! I...I mean we..." He said, pointing with his index claw at the egg, "...been travelling under the rain for the entire day and...well I was wondering if I could stay under your roof until it stops?"
He awkwardly scratched the back of his neck, unsure of how one was even supposed to ask such a thing from a complete stranger. It seemed like such an obvious, no brainer thought yet the poor guilmon couldn't find the right words to properly make his case, it seemed. He was so used to being interrupted, corrected and helped by others around him when it came to asking for stuff that he wasn't quite sure how to do so himself.
Right, maybe he should offer something in return? It wasn't nice to take things for free after all.
"I-I can help with stuff in return, if you need it! Uhm..." What could he offer though? What was something he was good at besides fighting stuff? Digging holes...maybe cleaning if taught properly? "I can dig floors and clean holes." He happily added, oblivious to his mistake, just hoping he wouldn't be immediatelly sent away once the renamon decided they had enough with him speaking.

Though Makoto did, indeed, have the temptation to invite some visitors... They didn't expect to have any so suddenly, hearing a knock at their door..! Who was that, they wondered..? <Could you check the door, Kuro?> They'd ask as they moved to put away the duster - and the shadow, dutifully, would move over to the window; looking outside, to see...
<... A BlackGuilmon, with an egg...> It'd murmur to Makoto, somewhat puzzled at this stranger. <They look soaked, too...>
Oh dear - couple of poor darlings stuck out in the rain, they wondered? "Just a mooooment!" They'd call to the door, in a warm almost sing-song tone - setting the duster away in one of the cupboards under the sink. Sure, they might've not been able to clean the apartment as much as they might've wanted to, but leaving a guest out in the rain would be heresy, if you asked them!
And thus, they'd open up the door - the tall Renamon-X smiling warmly and sympathetically down to the BlackGuilmon. Gio wouldn't be given much of a chance to offer things in return - for when he asked if he could come in to wait out the rain, Makoto was more than happy to usher him in. "Of course, darlings - come on in, okay?" They'd speak gently - adding "Just wait for just a second before you start getting comfy; I'll get you a towel real quick, so you can dry yourself and your little one off."
And with that, Makoto would make their way up the stairs - to a linen closet, in the upstairs bathroom. They'd take out a warm and fluffy-looking towel, before heading back downstairs, before offering it to Gio. "Here you go, darling - feel free to make yourself at home on the couch once you're all dried off, and be as greedy as you like with the throwpillows and blankets there - let me know if you need anything. And if you'd like, I can take your poncho and run it through the dryer for you, too."
As Makoto fussed over Gio and his egg though, Kuro would watch - masquerading as Makoto's shadow, though nonetheless curious. What was a Rookie doing with this egg, it pondered...?

Truth be told Gio was expecting to be shooed away already. not really having any high hopes after a long afternoon of rejection and rain. So to say he was taken aback by the fox's generosity would be a massive understatement. His eyes widened as he began to beam at them, bowing his head repeatedly, tail wagging all the while.
"Oh thank you, thanks a ton!" He exclaimed as he carefully made his way inside, trying to keep his tail as steady as he could as he was all too self conscious of how much water he was bringing inside the house with himself. Thankfully the renamon was quick to give him a nice towel, which he first used to carefully dry any water on the egg, only wrapping himself with the towel once he was sure the small black and white oval was dry as bone.
He'd take the renamon's other offers up immediatelly as he'd carefully place the egg on a corner of the couch, wrapping a small blanket around them, before sitting next to them and giving them a gentle pat. "Nice and warm at last~"
He then turned to face Makoto, shaking his head, "N-no thank you, that's...you don't have to do so much for us." He said somewhat awkwardly as he took of his wet poncho and neatly folded it on top of his knees. Well, not so much "neatly folded" as much as he began twisting it around like a wet cloth, before realizing that would only get Makoto's floor even wetter and was probably not the best way of treating a gift from someone else, so he stopped himself and placed it on his lap before turning back to the renamon. "I'm really thankfu--thankf-" he huffed and stopped for a moment, before saying, "Thanks a lot, really! Uh..." It was only then it dawned on Gio that he didn't even know who he was so thankful to. Introductions were hard...
"I'm Gio! What's your name?"

Makoto chuckled as Gio made sure that the egg was nice and snug on the couch - already finding him to be quite endearing, with how attentive he was to making sure the egg was okay. They were quick to reassure the BlackGuilmon's worries though, responding "I insist, darling; putting your poncho in the dryer will be quick and easy, and it'll save you a lot of waiting and fuss." Smiling warmly, they'd add "Besides, what kind of host would I be if I didn't make sure that my guests were well cared for?"
Even as Gio struggled with his words though, Makoto smiled and waited patiently, sitting down on the nearby loveseat. "Of course, dear - it'd be cruel to leave the two of you out in the rain; that's just asking for one of you to get sick!" They responded kindly, before continuing "My name is Makoto, Gio darling - and it's a pleasure to meet you."
Kuro would take the time to reveal itself next, briefly parting from Makoto's body, as the fox gestured to it. "And that's Kuro - you can think of it as my living shadow, or my familiar. It's a little bit shy, so don't worry if Kuro is a bit on the quiet side." Quietly, the shadow in question regarded Gio and the egg both - Makoto could easily tell that it was curious about them, even if it did nonetheless feel a little timid.
With introductions out of the way though, the slowcooker would beep from the kitchen - prompting Makoto to clap their hands together in a jovial fashion. "Looks like you're just in time for some nice warm soup, by the way, Gio dear!" They chirped with a chuckle, offering "Would you want any? I've got more than plenty for the both of us, and I'd love to hear more about yourself, if you're at all inclined. What brought you out to these parts?"

Well, if Makoto insisted this much it was probably wise to listen to what they said. "O-ok!" Gio replied with a nod, carefully handing out the folded poncho to the fox, before tilting his head. What kind of host would they be? Well, Gio certainly didn't know the answer to that, he hadn't ever learned the first thing about hosting. Or the second one, or third!
"Uhm...I don't know." He admitted, before adding with a smile, "You seem like a pretty good host though." The dragon wasn't lying either, even he could tell that much after having such a warm reception thrown his way. He'd give another nod as the renamon introduced themselves.
"Makoto-sama." He repeated aloud, mostly to commit it to memory than anything else. As for Kuro, all he could do was look in awe and surprise at the strange apparition. He didn't even know shadows could be alive! Such an idea made him shoot a somewhat concerned look at his own shadow, but upon making sure it didn't seem to be moving on it's own, he turned to give Kuro a polite bow of the head. "Pleasure to meet you two." He didn't mind if they were more on the quiet side, if anything he was a bit self conscious of accidentally scaring Kuro away by being too loud, so from that moment onwards' he'd make sure to carefully modulate the volume of his voice.
The lizard's wing like ears perked up at the mention of food however, and he didn't have to think twice before answering Makoto's offer with a resounding "Yes please!"
His cheerful demeanor subsided a bit as that next question hit him however. Right, of course they would ask something like that. Despite how many times he was confronted with that question during his journey, he never seemed to have a good answer at the ready. He never seemed fully sure of it himself.
"Well..." He'd rub the back of his neck somewhat awkwardly, "...I've been walking alone for a buncha days now. I went away from...someones, before I took a train all the way to the mountains, and from there I went down and eventually got here. It's more warm and cozy than the mountain but I'd like it if it would stop raining."

Makoto handled the poncho carefully, not minding if any water ended up soaking into their fur - water wouldn't kill them, obviously, and drying off would be easy-peasy. Being called a 'pretty good host', though, would prompt a warm laugh from the fox - as they smiled to Gio. "I'm happy to hear that, darling - thank you; you seem like quite the sweetheart, yourself." They'd respond, tails briefly swishing.
However, they had a task to do, and so they'd make for the laundry room - mentioning "Alright - give me just a minute, and I'll get this running through the dryer." as they disappeared around the corner. If Gio listened, he would likely be able to hear the sounds of something opening and closing, a couple of beeps, and then the whrrrrr of the dryer running before Makoto returned. "And there we go - now all we have to do is wait, and your clothes will be nice and dry." In the meantime though...
As far as introductions went, the '-sama' suffix would draw an endeared chuckle out of Makoto; though the Renamon-X initially wouldn't say too much to it... At least, not until the little Guilmon eagerly responded to the offer of soup! "Not only a sweetheart, but also quite polite, at that!" Makoto hummed, in a lighthearted tease. "Such a good dear - I'll go get you a bowl." With that, they began moving for the kitchen, also offering "Would you like some warm fluffy biscuits with your soup, too? I can also get you something to drink, if you're thirsty at all - we've got tea, milk, water, or juice."
It wasn't hard to dish up some food for Gio either way though - getting out a ladle, as well as a spoon and bowl, and (if Gio said yes,) a plate for the biscuits, and a cup for whatever he might want to drink. The soup - akin to cheddar and broccoli, albeit with more Digital World-esque ingredients - was steaming-hot as it was set on the coffee table for Gio.
As Makoto worked on dishing the both of them up though, Gio would talk about his travels - to which they listened closely, with some curiosity. Went away from someone - with an egg in tow...? It certainly raised a variety of questions, although the questions would go unasked - it wasn't Makoto's business, after all; and for all they knew, Gio was trying to leave behind something he'd rather not think about.
Instead, they'd simply nod in understanding and acknowledgement, casting a smile in the Guilmon's direction as they set Gio's food down on the coffee table for him. "The soup's gonna be hot, since it's fresh - so don't burn your tongue, okay Gio darling?" They spoke - before heading back into the kitchen to dish themself up as well. "But yes, it's certainly that time of the year." They'd respond firstly, chuckling briefly. "Autumn always comes with lots of rain - although this type of weather is also the perfect time to warm up with some soup, ain't it?"
Some food in hand, they'd move to the loveseat - perpendicular to the couch, and in front of the curtained window - before sitting down, casting a more sympathetic smile to Gio. "... Being on one's lonesome can be quite liberating, being able to do and act as you please; Although it can also be quite - well - lonely." They'd muse out loud, adding "I've certainly been there before - I know that feeling plenty - and it sounds like you've been traveling on your own for awhile. So don't be afraid to make yourself as at home as you please, okay dear?"
They weren't going to pry any more than Gio allowed - but they, at least, were going to offer a bit of sympathy, support, and solidarity; especially given that they had a pretty good idea of how the Guilmon might be feeling right now.

Polite? Sweetheart? That was a first, Gio couldn't remember the last time anyone had called him that...ever, really! Usually it was different variations of "kid" or "dummy" if people didn't call him by his name.
"Thanks..." The guilmon said, surprised at catching himself blushing a bit for whatever reason. Guess he wasn't as used to receiving that sort of compliment in general, usually the nicest thing people told him was either how cute or how strong he was for a rookie. Not that he minded either of those, of course. As for the renamon's question about food, that actually gave him pause for a moment, the rookie rubbing his chin thoughtfully as he considered his answer for a moment, before answering with, "Bisquits and water's good, please." Truth be told he was almost tempted to ask for everything at once but with how welcoming and nice Makoto was being, the last thing he wanted was to make them reconsider their good will towards him, so he tried to keep things as uncomplicated as possible.
As the food was placed on the small table next to him, it took every fiber of his being to stay strong and not throw himself head first into the plate, despite how hungry and cold he felt. Only once Makoto returned with a plate of their own would he start digging in, being careful to not burn himself with the soup as he somewhat awkwardly used a spoon to feed himself. He wasn't particularly used to using kitchen utensils, but he knew better than to try and drink soup with his hands at least. At the very least once he managed to take a sip he'd be delighted to find out it tasted as good as it smelled, which he was quick to let Makoto know.
"Mmm, so good...thanks Makoto-sama." He said with a nod, before agreeing to their earlier comment about a warm plate during such a cold time of the year. "Or warm chocolate too. Makes being out on the rain a lot less chilly."
As he continued eating, it seemed the renamon knew a thing or two about being alone. While that made him curious as to what would their reasons be to be alone, he nonetheless found himself relating to the feelings Makoto described. That liberating freedom for instance, something he had never quite felt before in his entire life.
"Yeah!" He'd retort with an energetic nod, finally someone that understood it! Though they clearly also understood the general loneliness that came with it too, prompting his smile to dim a bit as his ears drooped down slightly. "Yeah..." True, neither of them were completely alone, Makoto had Kuro and he had that egg, but at least for him it still felt like there was a piece missing, even though he couldn't quite articulate what it was.
Nevertheless, he gave the fox a somewhat surprised look at their invitation to pretty much stay as he pleased. He gave a warm, endlessly grateful smile in return.
"Thanks Mistress..." He said with a bow, before straightening back up with a jolt, face in a mix of embarrasment and panick at his freudian slip. "I-I mean thanks Makoto-sama!" He was quick to correct himself in a panicked tone, taking a long drink from his cup of water afterwards, as if to try and play it off like nothing happened. He knew better than that however, so as soon as he was finished he'd let out a sigh.
"S-sorry, it's just...you reminded me of someone I used to know. Her name was Mistress, I think. She...took care of me lots too." The black scaled lizard explain, a slight smile on his face as he reminisced. Not wanting to make things even more awkward however, he'd quickly add, "Uhm...your soup is way better though!"

"You're welcome, dear - I'm glad you enjoy it." Makoto responded, before chuckling at the mention of warm chocolate. "Hot cocoa is quite good; it's a shame that I'm out of chocolate, else I'd have offered to make you some, with all the good fixings - marshmallows, whipped cream, and the like." They'd muse, briefly nodding in agreement. "I'll have to go shopping and stock back up on goodies, once the weather clears up enough."
As Gio ate though, Makoto would eat as well - carefully tearing one of their biscuits in half, and dipping it into the soup, so that it could soak up a bit of that cheddar goodness, before taking a bite from it. Softly, they'd hum in contentment - this soup came out really good, even if they had to get a little bit experimental with some of the ingredients. But then again, could you really go wrong with soup?
Nonetheless, as the two conversed, Makoto would cast a sympathetic smile towards Gio's much less enthusiastic response to the latter of the described feelings. However, before they could elaborate on those feelings, well... There came the freudian slip, in being called Mistress! Makoto couldn't help but blink a bit owlishly at this - and even Kuro was a bit startled, if the jolt that the shadow made was of any indication.
Perhaps, were Makoto in more mature company, this would be when they'd have a few jokes to crack about being called Mistress - although Gio struck them as much too innocent for them to be comfortable doing so. Instead, they'd chuckle in response to the BlackGuilmon's hasty explanation, casting Gio a warm and calm smile. "It's alright, dear; I'm flattered that I reminded you of someone you seem to think quite warmly of." They reassured him, continuing in a gentle tease "And that you think my soup's that good, at that!" with a brief laugh.
The 'I think' in regards to this caretaker being named Mistress, though, seemed a bit odd. Some digimon taking on names like that wasn't unusual, given the wide variation there was from digimon to digimon, but... Gio's uncertainty did raise some questions. Briefly, they debated over whether or not to pry - although the concern their more maternal side felt would soon win out. "... Pardon my curiosity - though might you tell me more, about this Mistress, darling?" They asked, feigning simple curiosity about who might've simply been a parent or mother figure for Gio.

"That sounds so good..." The blackguilmon muttered wishfully, trying his damnest not to drool at the fox's cocoa recipe. Carlos never put marshmallows into them but that sounded way too good now. "I could help you buying those." He said with a nod, before he gave it some thought and added, "Well, I can help carrying it all back here, at least!"
At the very least he was rather thankful for Makoto to not take advantage of his flustered slip to joke about it, even if it had been well intentioned. Really he would have been all too happy to let this subject pass them by, but once the Renamon showed interest in learning more that was all Gio's mind needed to unlock the proverbial drawer filled with memories from old times, before he even met his brother and tamer.
Gosh, now that he gave it some serious thought there was...quite a lot to go through, wasn't there? Well, it was best to start out simple: Mistress herself.
"Well...she was this nice Ophanimon back in Luminas. She was always there for me since I hatched, it feels like. Everyone called her Mistress, so I called her that too. She never corrected me, so I always thought that was her name." He smiled as he took another sip from his soup, the warm texture reminding him of the similarly warm food from way back. "She kept me in her mansion for a long long time, looking after me. Made me food, treated me when I felt sick and lots more."
"She taught me how to play too, not just hide and seek but also tag! And...well she took me to some contests with other mons like me." As he said this his tone turned slightly lower, not necesarily gloomy but still way less chipper than what he was a mere moment ago. "I kinda liked those, even if the place we went for them looked...dark. Nothing at all like Mistress' house, no white walls, all the doors were cold and metal, and there were metal bars everywhere between the stage thingy and where digimon watching where. It was a bit scary, but I usually still won, even when I got hurt bad. But she was always happy with me regardless, and let me have whatever I wanted for dinner afterwards, even when I lost..."
Only when he stopped talking and looked at his surroundings again would he realize something Makoto and Shiro probably had a while ago: he had stopped eating, now mostly staring blankly at his plate, deep in thought. He'd carefully reach with one claw to gently pat the egg next to him, looking somewhat more at ease once he was certain it was still warm. Still his gaze looked somewhat troubled as he looked back up at the renamon.
"Uhm...Makoto sama, this might be a bit weird of a question but..." He stopped, unsure how to phrase the doubts that had been weighing him down ever since he walked away from the other two. The last thing Dio had said to him before leaving. "What's a pet like to you?"
"I mean...in your opinion, what makes something or someone a pet?" He added, trying to ease Makoto as much as possible in following his admitedly chaotic and muddled train of thought.

The offer for help would bring a warm smile from Makoto - and they'd chuckle. "Such a sweet young man - I appreciate the offer plenty. If you're willing to hang around for a little longer after the rain clears up, then I'd be more than happy to accept some help grocery shopping." They responded - adding "It'd be a good opportunity for you to pick out anything you want to put in your own hot cocoa, too!"
But that, again, would likely need to wait until it stopped raining; they didn't want to get either of themselves - nor the groceries - soaked!
And in the meantime, Gio would be talking about Mistress - to which Makoto listened closely. Gio - a BlackGuilmon, and thus likely a virus-type - being in Luminas did prompt some vague concern; if this was during the time of Old Luminas, it was a potential red flag right off the bat. On top of such, while 'Mistress' certainly could've been this Ophanimon's name... The mention of a mansion almost implied that it could've been - instead - a title...
Yet, nonetheless, they continued to listen quietly, smiling gently and reassuringly all the whilst. At the very least, it seemed as though Gio had a comfortable life in the mansion - although... Then he mentioned the 'contests'. And the dark metallic place these contests were held in. And the implications of fights, as well? ... This definitely was during the time of Old Luminas - and this fact would bring a concerned, yet sympathetic, frown to the fox's face.
<Makoto, do you think...?>
<... I think so, Kuro dear. I'll handle talking it out, though - it's okay.>
It looked like similar thoughts were running through Gio's head, too, at least going off of his troubled and thoughtful expression - and when he asked about what a 'pet' was, well... Makoto couldn't help but make a similarly troubled expression of their own, before sighing gently. "I... Admit that's a question that I have many thoughts over." They'd first respond, attempting to cast the little dragon a reassuring smile. "Would you mind it, if I ended up rambling at all, darling?"
With Gio's confirmation though, Makoto would take a second to gather their thoughts, exhaling once more, and then...
"... 'Pet' is something that can have a number of different meanings - context is the biggest thing, of course." They began, briefly taking a sip of the soup. "Among humans, a pet is usually an animal that is kept around for companionship, and sometimes to assist in certain tasks. Pets are a big responsibility - akin to a child - because humans expect someone to be able to take care of their pet to the best of their ability, and to provide for all of its needs - food, water, shelter, safety, affection... A pet is like family, for many humans."
"The concept of pets aren't as common among us digimon, though; given that there aren't many, if any, digital lifeforms that are close enough to human-world animals - let alone ones that are adoptable. The closest equivalent would be a feral digimon, or lifeforms created via one's abilities, such as Kuro. However, it'd be inappropriate to take in a random feral digimon and call them a pet, for the same reason it'd be inappropriate for a human to take in another human and call them a pet. And to just call Kuro my pet would also be inappropriate, because it's just as sapient as you or me."
"The only real time it's appropriate to call another person a pet, would be, well..." Makoto trailed off, pausing to think over their words. "... It'd be within the context of more mature or adult situations - something kept behind closed doors, and only between adults who understand eachothers' boundaries and consent to it - agree to it - ahead of time. And ideally, it'd be in a situation where if anyone involved ever became uncomfortable, it'd stop immediately."
"Otherwise? It's demeaning. It's - as a human might put it - dehumanizing. And yet, there are bad people out there who will do it without care for consent - treating someone as their pet, as their property, without much regard to that individual's agency as a living and breathing person who has a life of their own to live. And that isn't right - it's something that is generally abhorred amongst the average populace for a reason."
Briefly, Makoto fell quiet once more, sighing. "... I apologize, dear; that was definitely a bit of a ramble on my part." They murmured to Gio, casting the BlackGuilmon a gentle smile. Admittedly, a lot of personal feelings over the situation that the dragon had described had leaked into their ramble there. "That probably wasn't a very direct or to-the-point answer, but... Did it answer your questions nonetheless, darling?"
