Speed was not having a good time right now. It had been a couple days since that encounter he and his brother had with the Grandmaster. They along with a couple others had ventured into a seemingly abandoned building to look for evidence of the Grandmaster's schemes. What they found was worse than anything they could've possibly imagined, and the only reason they got out... was because of Psych's sacrifice. The building fell on top of the purple Flamedramon variant, and just like that he was gone.
Naturally, Johan and the team he led were all criticized heavily for their actions for this unapproved mission, but Speed was taking it the hardest. The drake had locked himself in his room and had not come out since then. He would be given meals placed by his door but that was the most interaction that anyone could get out of him. He refused to even let his boyfriend Lantis into his room to see him. Johan, Dokamon and to a lesser extent Zero all felt horrible about how everything turned out for the Speedramon.
But today... today there was a chance, a light of hope for the speedster.
During that mission, Speed had learned that he and Psych had parents after they met Akane, a Guilmon who worked undercover for the Grandmaster in exchange for her sons' safety. Since the deal had been broken, Akane spent the last couple days pondering how she could make things right with her remaining son... if that was even possible at this point, given that she had abandoned the two of them and brought them to the Village of Beginnings as younglings, where they endured the worst possible childhood that any Digimon could have. The only reason Akane knew of this was because Johan had told her afterwards about what Speed and Psych had said about their childhoods.
"Th-That can't be true, I was promised that... oh no, I really screwed up, then..." Akane said over the phone to Johan. "Hik- I mean, Speed probably doesn't want me in his life at all at this point."
"Actually, I think you're the only chance we have to help him grieve."
"Hm? What do you mean?"
Not even half an hour after Akane was made aware about Speed's mental state, she rushed over to AEGIS HQ as fast as she could without deactivating her holosuit. Once she was let up to the lounge area, Johan would walk her to Speed's room and explain the situation further. "The most he's done is eat the meals we give him. I'm really concerned about what he's doing in there."
"And you really think that I'm the one that can help him?" Akane asked while she walked in her Guilmon form.
"I don't know for sure, but we've run out of options, and besides... he'll probably just be happy to get to know the mom he never knew he had."
"Yeah..." Akane responded half-heartedly. Once she approached Speed's bedroom door, she would lightly knock on it a couple of times. "...Speed, honey? It's Akane... your mother. Can... can I talk to you for a minute please?" She would wait for a few moments before she heard the door unlock from the other side. The Guilmon took a deep breath, and opened the door.
What she would find was definitely something she was expecting to see. The room was almost pitch black dark, with only a single light illuminating the space. A small pile of trays was stashed in the far left corner of the room from the door, and sitting on the bed was Speed in his blue Pulsemon form. He had tears coming down his eyes still, and he was hugging his legs close to his head. He looked up towards the Guilmon that had just entered. "What do you want?"
"Do you... mind if I sit next to you?" Akane asked, closing the door behind her. Speed didn't respond, which Akane took as a reluctant "yes." She walked over and sat next to her son on the bed. "I never meant for things to get so bad. I truly was trying to protect you and... and Psych."
"When did you start caring about us?" Speed asked. "If you truly cared then you would've have left us in that horrible place, making us think we were just formed wrong."
"I was told about what happened in the Village of Beginnings," Akane said. "Honey, I swear if I had known that any of that was going to happen, then I would've just taken the challenge and raised you and your brother myself, regardless of my doubts."
"Why did you give us up then, huh? If you really loved us so much then why leave us in that horrible place with all those Digimon wh-who thought we were formed wrong and alienated us and bullied us? Where were you for all of that? Were we not good enough for you until we got older or something?"
"Speed, that isn't an easy answer..." Akane admitted. "Shortly after you two hatched, your father... an ExVeemon... he left us. Not just you two... he abandoned me as well." The Guilmon took a deep breath. patting Speed on the shoulder... "It was a cold winter day... when your dad came by, before going away... his Flamedramon pal on the pathway... the day it was suddenly real."
His interest peaked, Speed would turn to look at the Guilmon, who smiled as she explained. "I told you two not to come outside... but you saw the Flamedramon and you smiled so wide... a real life Flamedramon on the pathway... it was a truly big deal... Goodbyyyyye, goodbye... now it's just me, and my little guys. And the house felt so big, and I felt sooo small... the house felt so big, and I felt so small."
Now was when Akane herself would start to tear up a bit. "That night I grabbed you both and fled... arrived at the village, walked up and said... 'Please make sure they'll be okay'... and I gave you both away... and the world felt so big, and I felt sooo small... the world felt so big... and I..." As the memories and emotions came flooding back to Akane, her tears would now match Speed's own. "And I knew that it was a moment of weakness, and I knew it was a role I couldn't fulfill, and I KNEW I'D COME UP SHORT, A MILLION DIFFERENT WAYS AND I did... and I do... and I will..."
The Guilmon's tone would then become more... hopeful in a way, despite what she was just explaining. "But unlike that cold winter day..." Akane wrapped her paw around Speed's. "I will take your hand, squeeze it tightly and say... I'm sorry for... going... away... but now your mom isn't going anywhere, your mom is staying right here, your mom isn't going anywhere, your mom is staying right heeeere, noooo matter what... I'll be here..."
Suddenly, for the first time since the tragedy, Speed... began to smile. "When it alllll feels so big... till it alllll feels sooo small... when it allll feels so big... till it alllll feels sooo small... till it alllllllll feeeeels soooo smaaaaaaall..." Akane took another deep breath as she gave her son a big hug, the first big hug she'd given a son of hers in a long time. "I know nothing can make up for what I did, but all I'm asking for is another chance to prove it right. I know your brother isn't gone. I will help you through this, and we will find Psych. Together."
Speed was silent for a few moments as he thought all this over, before he looked back up at his mother. "You promise we'll get him back?"
Akane gave a warm smile to Speed. "With all my Digicore." She would then hop off the bed, heading towards the door. "I'll give you some time if you need it, but you're welcome to join us outside. Your friends... they're worried about you."
"I know they are," Speed said. "I just... didn't want them to see me like this. I'm supposed to be upbeat, cheery, not a care in the world..."
"They're not going to think differently of you because of your sadness. Chances are they've experienced some of their own. They'll know what you're going through, and they'll help you. I'm sure of that."
"...I'll be out in a little bit. I just have to clean myself up a bit first."
"That's my little Speed," Akane said with a smile before walking out the door. Speed would then look out the window once she left.
We're going to find you, Psych... and I swear, we are going to bring you back alive.
