Natsuya wanders his way through the streets of Terminus, rubbing his eye gently under his sunglasses. Miraculously, there were shops that had human sized clothing. And what issues he had, he simply… adjusted. It was all data, and the code was simple enough for just clothes. Digimon were a bit more complicated, you had to actually get to their Digicore to modify them… So now he had a plain orange shirt under a black jacket, some jeans and sturdy boots.
But that wasn't his concern right now. He had seen something that really caught his attention: Some kind of clumsy mech-suit Digimon. His new modified scanner had told him that it was a "Mekanorimon," and he wanted one. It would be significantly easier to travel the world in a mech suit, and he would even be able to be in the battle directly! It was perfect. But, the problem was… his Loader only let him Xros data in combination… so he needed to find some Digimon that he could "appropriate" the data from.
"Charles, you knew what tokusatsu was. Can you think of any Digimon that could maybe be repurposed into being control systems for a Mekanorimon?"
The Hagurumon, who was floating on behind him, lets out a soft hm. "We'd need like… A screen Digimon…" After a moment, his cogwheel whirs to speed. "A Monitamon maybe? They aren't very common, but if we found one…"
Natsuya grins and looks at Ken. "...Do you think we can turn your talent for repairing data into converting a Digimon into something we can use to force a Xros?"
Ken ticks for a few moments before nodding. "Statement: Yes, convert to DigiMemory is possible."
"Good. Then let's find a Monitamon."
Charles raises a hand. "Let's check Junkside! Always lots of unsavory types moving around there, and Monitamon can't resist a gossip or two!" The Hagurumon starts rushing ahead, forcing Natsuya to walk faster to keep up.
They eventually reach a smaller fenced off portion of the city, where a ton of scrap metal rests. Natsuya can't help but be impressed. "...Not a lot of valuables in there, I bet."
"Usually expensive stuff like Digizoid scraps gets sold off before it even gets here. But sometimes you find gems. Literally." Charles laughs and heads over through the gate. "Bet a scrap shop has a Monitamon."
Ken looks at Natsuya before motioning ahead. Natsuya simply nods and shuffles on in, looking at the piles of junk and scrap metal. Very little of direct use and interest to him at the moment. He kicks aside a discarded metal helmet of some kind, empty eye sockets whistling as it flies… They suddenly pull through to a marketplace of some kind. Stalls run by all manner of Digimon hawking their wares that they've scavenged from the junk piles. Kokuwamon selling power couplings and batteries, Hagurumon selling clockworks and prosthetics (refurbished, obviously), a few organic Digimon like Armadillomon and Kotemon selling armor and weapon components. Natsuya can’t help but smile a little. It’s almost like that market in Star Wars. Got that… mezzanine vibe.
Suddenly, “Hey, human!” A voice calls out from one of the nearby shops. One that has a proper building. Natsuya raises an eyebrow. “You’re not gonna find a whole lot ‘round here for you. Most of this is Digimon stuff! But… I might have a thing or two!” The voice boasts, as Natsuya finally identifies the speaker. Ah, would you look at that… a Monitamon. That’s rather convenient. Natsuya motions for Charles and Ken to follow him as he approaches, before uttering under his breath for Ken to hear: “Start up your DigiMemory process or whatever, Ken. I want it done quick, and efficiently. We may have to get out of here very quickly…”
“Affirmative.”
Natsuya follows the Monitamon. “Alright, Monitamon. You’re right, this place is mostly stuff for Digimon. What do you have to offer that might be useful to me outright?” He leans down onto the counter, which is a bit hard considering how small it is. It’s meant for Rookie Digimon after all.
“Bet you’ve got a computer or something that doesn’t like workin’ when you cross the barrier between the worlds, right?”
“As a matter of fact, yes, I do, and yes it did stop working when I crossed the barrier.”
“What you need is to try and make it Digital World compatible! Now, I mean, I am workin’ with scrap around here so I can’t guarantee a 100% success rate. But I can certainly up the odds of it workin’ versus not.”
“Alright, I am intrigued, Monitamon. Show me what you’ve got.”
“Right this way, human!” The Monitamon grins and motions for Natsuya and the gang to follow him into the back of his building. Electronics of all kinds are stacked up high over the walls and shelves, ranging from bare circuit boards to ancient human tech like a Commodore computer. Natsuya can’t help but whistle in minor surprise.
“I’m impressed, Monitamon. Lots of stuff in here that collectors in the Real World would die for.”
“I have a way with the tech, ya see?” Monitamon grins before opening a door and motioning the group inside. He then closes the door behind them as he sits at a desk. “So, human. Wha-”
“Before you begin, Monitamon… I want to know two things: One, will any of your modifications enable you to, oh I don’t know… spy on me and thus get juicy gossip for you to share with your friends? And two, how much would this actually end up costing me?”
And suddenly, Monitamon seems to be quite uncomfortable, squirming in his seat. “W-What? Spy on you? Why would I want to do that?”
“Because that is what human companies do, and it’s what I would do if I had modifications I could sell.” Natsuya says dryly.
Monitamon takes a breath and shakes his head. “...So, you already know how the game goes then.”
“Indeed. I play it quite well myself.”
“And you came in here anyway?”
“Because you have something I want.”
“And what could I possibly have, if you walked in here knowing I was going to try and pull something like that?”
“...Your data.”
“What?” Monitamon actually jumps a bit and looks around. “W-What do you mean, my data?”
Natsuya leans forward, glasses suddenly lighting up in the glare, obscuring his eyes as his lips break into a wide, sadistic grin. “...The data that makes you up, Monitamon. You possess it right now… and I need it.”
Monitamon starts stuttering, static blaring across the screen that makes up its face. ”What ever for?! You’re a human!”
“Yes, but I have partners, as you can see. And I’m a hacker. I take simple data… and manipulate it to do what I want. And you will make a fine addition to my army… But not as a companion, but as a Memory.” Natsuya raises a hand, and snaps his fingers. Charles and Ken leap forward, knocking Monitamon’s desk over as they grab hold of the Digimon. Monitamon starts struggling.
“Y-You’re crazy. DigiMemories don’t work like that!” It protests, looking up at Natsuya as he rises from the chair.
“Of course it doesn’t. Not naturally. But I just said I was a hacker, did I not? I make data work for me, not the other way around.” He cracks his fingers. “Charles.”
“Darkness Gear!” Charles spins his little hand around until it becomes a black gear, and drives it into the Monitamon’s side, causing it to yelp loudly… as a blue screen comes on the TV head and it suddenly becomes enveloped in a fireball!
“Ken.”
The Solarmon’s ring spins rapidly. “Attack Callout: Heated Gear.” He says before firing a superheated gear at the Monitamon’s face, cracking the screen.
“M-Mercy! M-Mercy!” The Monitamon begs as it gets so harshly abused, and Natsuya just laughs.
“Mercy?! Why should I offer mercy to someone who was going to treat me like most human companies do? A source of information, a source of income even, while I do all the actual work?!” Natsuya’s face darkens as he adjusts his glasses with a finger… Lenses glaring over once again. “No, there is never any mercy for scum like you. I’m no paragon of virtue or anything, but I hold myself to a standard. You, and those like you, whether they be human or Digimon… do not.”
Charles and Ken start spinning much faster now, both main body gear ring and hands… and they drive their gears together into the Monitamon’s chest. There’s a burst of static, and the screen shatters.
“...And now you will be a tool in my revenge.” Natsuya concludes, as Ken starts loading the data from the now dissolving Monitamon. After a moment, Ken then floats over to Natsuya and opens his mouth, where a DigiMemory stick pops out. Natsuya takes it and examines it. It resembles a RAM stick, with Monitamon’s image embossed on the side. He smiles. A nice, calm smile compared to the emotion he had just shown. “...We leave now.” He says, opening the door, and walking out. Charles looks at Ken, and the two follow. It seems the first step has been taken… Natsuya’s rise to power has truly begun.
