Gabumon, eh? Raijin watched Gabumon (Garmmon) with almost an idle interest as the Digimon quickly left the scene, almost distracted completely from his confrontation with Mana.
It was not just the Digimon calling itself by its species name, but also this whole situation relating to the acquisition of armor forms that reminded Raijin of Anubismon, the being that had guided him through the whole ‘destiny’ thing. That Digimon also referred to itself by its species name.
Anubismon… Thinking of the Digimon reminded him of one of the stories that Anubismon told, the one about a Velgemon destined for villainy but fighting against it. Raijin had originally considered the story an affirmation of the cold hard truth that Digimon born to be evil would therefore cannot be anything but be evil. That was the moral of that story, right? The inevitability of programming? It must be it. After all, if he understood the story, then the Velgemon would have caused harm no matter… no matter… no matter its intentions?
Wait.
It would have caused harm regardless, yes. So intentions should not matter, right? This realization infuriated Raijin, but he could not be distracted for long.
Mana’s counter offer jotted Raijin back to reality, and his gaze was once again turned towards her - or at least in her general direction. He heard her words, but it also glazed over him. With that said, the gargantuan Raijin nonetheless raised his fists, readying himself into a melee fighting stance. His remaining two arms sticking out of his back readied themselves too, preparing to smack his batteries above his shoulders like drums, a move that should trigger a rather disconcerting sound for those he wished to disorient.
But even then, it was likely that a certain degree of absentmindedness, of unfocused attention was clearly visible on Raijin’s face. Perhaps this would give Mana a moment to not yet attack Raijin, hopefully?
If so, Raijin would speak, once again, this time his attention seemed to return and be focused back on Mana. As if he finally processed something in his mind, which well, he did. ”I must ask.” Raijin began, his voice carrying a certain sense of rigidity that it always had, but also a bit of genuine curiosity and even a desire perhaps for a different resolution than violence. ”Please, tell me why you are adamant about protecting the Ogremon? I really cannot fathom it. What is your true reason for standing between me and my target?”
So, how will this play out?

Now that everyone who was potentially in the murderlist had left the scene, Mana proceeded to plop on the floor and stare lazily at the panorama. Considering the active volcano, the panorama managed to look fairly harsh, yet also pretty nonetheless; after all, a volcano eruption wasn’t a disaster in itself, was it? Once everything was said and done, the earth would be revitalized and the panorama would probably be better than it has ever been. Well, at least if you didn’t take into account what could happen to this place’s inhabitants.
But that was a moot point at the moment. Poetry wasn’t Mana’s strong suit, and the fact that she was beginning to get bored out of her mind wasn’t helping that much, either. She didn’t look like she was readying herself to battle in the slightest, but that was a direct result of her sour mood. Nevertheless, one thing was obvious at a glance; her offer was still in effect. As long as the digimon remained here and didn’t attempt anything fishy, the Meicoomon remained non-combative. That’s what admiring the scenery entailed, right?
Only then, another question was directed at her. Once again, the digimon’s eyes focused on the only other nearby living being. “Huh?” She seemed genuinely confused at it. Was it really that hard to comprehend? “I already told you. That situation was fun to me! Imagine, two useless humans and their equally useless digimons about to get sacrificed, but just in time, our heroines swoop in and save the day! And then they discover there’s a greater threat looming that everyone needs to defeat together! If you told that to anyone, they’d surely be envious! It’d also be a sick bedtime story to tell your kids while tucking them in, don’t you think?”
It was genuinely hard to discern whether Mana’s excitement was genuine or not. Maybe both? “But then you appeared and tried to turn the tale into your run-of-the-mill mass murder story. Those are a dime a dozen, you know? Not to say, they’re also quite tacky and aren’t all that fitting for children. You could’ve traumatized those two human girls for life and made them even more useless than what humans usually are. That’d have been a true pity, so I’m here to stop you! And, as long as Nami-chan is successful at stopping the volcano, that means I can claim credit for the story as well. Not to say, that’s what the main heroine would do, anyway. Or the older sister!”
Maybe she had been too detailed; oh well. The cat just shrugged before addressing Raijin again. “That’s it. Doubt that’s gonna be good enough to convince you to stop. But, venting feels good, man. Even if it’s to the cause of why you’re venting in the first place. Funny, ain’t it?”

'Murder list' was pretty apt, all things considering. For better or for worse, Raijin was ready to do anything to achieve his goals, and when that included having to kill or at least harm anyone that decides to get in the way, that really did mean basically anyone was on his 'murder list'. Though just as clearly, he would much rather not have to harm the innocent or the good, even if they were misled and was adamant about it - at least in his eyes.
The PseudoRaijinmon fell down into a seated position, cross-legged and facing Mana closer to her eye level. With this, the differences in their height was minimized. Raijin was frustrated. He had never been concerned about how he came across, but this whole reminder of the Velgemon story made him think. Was - was he the Velgemon in the story, destined for something he actually believed he was actively against? Resistance towards his actions had never bothered him as much as in this moment. He had been called many things, but being called out as someone sheerly unhelpful and in fact, rather bad? That had never happened before. In the past others had at least acknowledged he was trying to do good, even if they were resisting him. Templar knight, yes. On a crusade, yes. Ruthless, absolutely. But here… he was the bad guy?
But also, clearly not, right? They surely seemed to realize he was only trying to do good, for otherwise there’d be no reason for them to claim anything but that they are on the ‘good’ side. Raijin did not have eyebrows. He was a robot after all. But if he did have eyebrows, he would have furrowed them. Regardless, his frustration continued to clearly play out across his face.
It seemed like he was somewhat processing what Mana had said, but at the same time it was probably clear that it was auxiliary to his own thoughts. Finally, he addressed Mana again. ”I must admit, my methodology is extreme. However, it is for the good of the innocent, ultimately. Would they be better off traumatized, rather than dead?”
Raijin turned to face the direction before continuing to speak. ”Extreme action can seem unnecessary, until it is realized that normal action - or especially inaction - can have worse consequences. The Ogremon and Shamanmon… these type of Digimon can often operate in packs. Are you not worried that they are leading these humans and their Digimon, and more importantly, your sister, into a trap? You said it yourself - you wanted to be the heroine of the story, and you were going to be the one to take out the evildoers. You must believe they were up to no good, right? Given their innate nature, and their actions so far, would it be far more feasible and believable that they are up to no good?”
Yep. Raijin probably did not even fully hear what Mana had to say. Or at least, did not internalize all of it. After all, perhaps a better way to get Mana to empathize would be for Raijin himself to empathize with the ‘fun’. He was hunting all these goblinoid Digimon as part of his ‘taking time off’ between missions, after all. Well, on that note, he probably could have done better just… not being such a jerk.
But alas, Raijin was Raijin, and perhaps he has irked Mana again. Though then again, objectively, was he entirely wrong to believe what he said?

The situation was working more or less in Mana’s favor wasn’t it? Sure, talking instead of heading into the action was ultimately a fairly boring fate, but it was certainly preferred over the less than savory alternatives. As it stood, she would only have to deal with a very confused robot that clearly was, at least on a very small degree, questioning the directives given to him. Was that a good or a bad thing? In all honesty, Mana didn’t care all that much.
It didn't take long for Meicoomon to shake her head at the first attempt to rebuff her arguments. “See, that’s where you are mistaken. You judged a situation at face value when it had a lot of nuance to it; without a shadow of doubt, there’s simply no way for the humans to have died there, but plenty for them to be rendered into further uselessness. With that in mind, why would anyone tell a boring story over an interesting one? Nobody ever had time for subpar tales, you know? Those aren’t really worth living.”
She didn’t expect for somebody as stubborn to understand, but in the off-chance he did, that was a start. She let out a sigh before speaking once again. “Okay, let’s say that what you say is potentially correct, that despite the raging volcano that’s about to erupt at any moment now, the goblinoids were waiting in ambush, even considering that going to the volcano was the humans’ idea. In that very unlikely context and extremely minuscule possibility, you just subdue them all and keep on with the previous plan. Unforeseen turns are the meat of any worthwhile story, aren’t they? Nami-chan is a big girl, and she can handle herself; I’d be disappointed if she fell to weaklings like what we just fought, especially if they resorted to that cheap tactic! That just ain’t happening, man.”
As it stood, the situation was indeed an odd standstill, but ultimately one Mana didn’t care about in the slightest. Her goal here was to burn time and to prevent Raijin from going through a murderous rampage, and thus far, she was being more than successful.

Raijin did not agree with Mana. To him, a small mistake would have resulted in a death, absolutely. If it was just one of the two humans, or if one sister was playing slightly less attention to their surroundings, or was just a bit slower to react, he believed the Shamanmon would have got his kill.
These were not data-attribute Digimon. They were not even free or variable attributed Digimon either. He had never met a single virus-attribute Digimon that was anything but evil. Not a single one.
”Question. Why subdue the Ogremon and Shamanmon if they would prove no worth then? If I am right, would it not be better to just kill them? Then, we have less to consider when we protect the humans. Don’t forget, these are just weak Digimon. Yes, I am sure you or your sister can subdue these two Digimon, and I could too. But you do not know what lies in store. What if they have many other Champion-level allies waiting? What if they have an Ultimate-level leader? Do you think it is responsible to let the humans, their partners, and your sister be led into such a trap? Sure, it may not be the case, but is it a risk worth allowing?”
There seemed to be quite a misalignment between Raijin and Mana, with very different priorities. Raijin seem to be largely ignoring Mana’s talk about stories and telling them and all that. In a sense, he probably did not even understand it at all to begin with. He was far too uptight to consider stories or fun or anything like that.
It was probably even hard for Raijin to even describe what he is doing right now. Not the actual hunt part, but why the hunt. It was not his hobby per se, even if he is doing this on his time off between missions. He was not exactly on a quest either - nothing was compelling him to hunt these particular Digimon, or even counting his number of kills, or anything like that. He could stop any time he want. So what was it - a hobby? A desire? His programming? Well, he was not exactly programmed to do this in his free time either. Nothing in his code was preventing him from taking time off.
Perhaps something was wrong with his code after all. Some conflicting modules or versioning conflicts that may be causing errors. Even if he seems to be somewhat coming to a moment of realization, there was still something causing significant conflicts in his train of thought that was preventing progress.

A tough nut to crack, wasn’t he? Well, more like, Raijin pretty much only listened to what he wanted to do, and completely eschewed any form of reasonable counter-argument in favor of his tiresome rhetoric. Not the greatest, honestly!
By now, it was fairly obvious that Mana was losing her patience pretty quickly, but thankfully that wouldn’t be an issue for long. “Subdue. Kill. Picking on minutiae now, are we?” The Meicoomon answered, fairly bluntly. “Those terms can be used interchangeably depending on the winner’s disposition. It doesn’t take much for one to become the other, in any case.”
That wasn’t as bad to answer, or at least it wasn’t until Raijin decided to underrate her sister’s prowess. That managed to notably irk the feline. “You know? Blind assumptions like that one are going to end up with you dead at some point. If these digimons can’t handle a little volcano erupting, their chances of beating Nami-chan in combat are as slim as your intellect is deep. I’m surprised at how you’re so willing to overestimate the goblinoids to the point of paranoia, but think that my sister is some two-bit weakling like you seem to be. It’s insulting.”
Did he really want for it to be spelt out on his face? What a weird individual; Mana sighed before following. “You keep on talking about risks or whatever, but that’s only your own limited view of the situation you’re trying to impose on others. For my sister, the risks posed here are none; we’re here just for the entertainment value of observing how two little humans attain a state of slightly less uselessness and because Nami-chan was after something that only existed in this place; something that she probably is on her way to find, mind you. None of us signed up to have some blood knight wannabe try to shove his views on us, so please save yourself the effort, mostly because your view is so limited that watching you trying to apply it to me or my sister is getting less and less fun by the second.”
The best part about that rant was that she didn’t even need to be listened, as the volcano behind them began to erupt, albeit on a fairly subdued form, shortly afterward. Thankfully, that was likely her call to abandon the scene. “For what’s worth, I don’t really care if you kill every goblinoid on this island, just as long as you don’t do it near the humans we decided to follow on a whim for this short period of time. Knock yourself out.” After a small pause, she added. “Now, unless you need something else from me, I’ll take my leave. Have a nice life, or something.”
With that said, the cat turned her back and began walking in the direction of the volcano.

Insult after insult was directed at Raijin. Luckily, Raijin was pretty immune to being riled up by such words. Or perhaps unluckily rather? Someone else would have taken those words personally, and even if not now, for days to come would think about them constantly. Eventually, perhaps they might really break it down and internalize the intentions of such words. But that was not Raijin, for better or for worse. Of course, he did not appreciate it either. After all, Raijin considered himself to be experienced, to have dealt with a wide range of situations. He would question whether the Meicoomon herself was the simple-minded one, to not consider the worst of cases. He had lost brothers and sisters, he knew how quickly a tide of battle could turn, even with the best of planning.
To consider him limited in his view… that irked him. He never realized something could actually irk him, for he had mostly addressed anything and everything thrown at him with apathy. But this… this was different.
At the end of the day however, it was just words. And if he can avoid a battle, it turns out he would. Raijin saw no reason to engage in what he considered to be senseless violence - just that his definition of sense or senseless was probably highly atypical. To him, Meicoomon was not posing a threat right now. She was no longer in his way, so unless she engaged him, he would not engage her.
Thus, as she left towards the direction of the volcano, Raijin remained behind, contemplating his next set of actions.
Guess that was the end of that. Raijin was fully ready to fight Mana, but guess things just kind of… fizzled out.
