It hadn't even been a day since she had almost died. Natsumi Fujisaki was still trying to process it. The two had gotten home covered in soot and dirt, but oddly enough, their parents didn't really ask questions. They most likely thought that Haru had gotten the two of them in some little misadventure that got the both of them dirty. Little did they know. But as much as Natsu wouldn't have minded explaining everything that went down, she had a feeling it would cause more trouble than solve it, so she held her tongue for the most part. She even managed to stop shaking for a little bit.
And the night had gone on as if nothing had ever happened. Haru and Natsu elected to take their dinner into their room tonight, if only to give their hidden Digimon some much needed nourishment. Turns out transforming into bigger dogs burns up a lot of calories, or something. Natsu had closed her eyes for a little bit, only to have lost consciousness for a few hours. But that didn't last long. It was a little past midnight, and she realized that she was still filthy from the day's outing. Might have been a little late, but taking a bath wouldn't be so bad, right? She didn't think she would be getting any more sleep tonight, regardless.
So there Natsu was, in the bathtub, surrounded by a comical amount of lavender-scented bubbles. She just wanted to sink in and let herself absorb the warm water or something. She wasn't even sure what she was thinking anymore.
Her entire body ached from the little adventure. Her foot ached from kicking a stupid Shamamon. Her rear was bruised after riding on the rough-running Dorulumon for so long. Natsu had to wonder... did they make saddles for Digimon, or was that considered degrading somehow? Maybe she should just... not bother to ask. Her tush would get used to it eventually, right? After all, there were people that rode on horses a whole bunch!
So after a long day, it felt nice to relax, all by herself, and...
The door to the bathroom swung wide open as her sister walked in. "Haru, I'm already in here so get ou-"
"Don't care. Scooch," Haru rather rudely interrupted, moving into the tub while Natsu begrudgingly shifted around to give her sister some space. The two of them were in the tub now, side by side as they need to lift their knees up in order to even fit in. "Huh. I don't remember this tub ever being this small."
"Mom and dad told us to stop taking baths together because we would play in it for too long and splash water everywhere," Natsu answered as if Haru hadn't been there. They shifted around in the tub so their backs were against each other. It gave them a little bit more space. "And we're older now. Of course it's too small for the both of us."
"I see..." Haru looked a little... off today. Which was both a surprise and yet completely expected. Of course having such an event happen would get to someone, yet Natsu had always thought that nothing would ever bother Haru. She was Haru, for pete's sake!
"So... did you come in to catch up on old times, or did you want to say something?" Natsu asked, getting to the point.
"I..." Natsu's back felt Haru squirm around in place. "I just wanted to check up on you, you know? I woke up and saw that you weren't in bed, and... I just wanted to make sure you were... okay."
"I'm fine," She stated. "Maybe a little shaken up still, but... I'm okay."
"For sure? Like, did you check yourself for injuries? You might have some broken bones or-"
"I said 'I'm fine', Haru!" Natsu repeated, she twisted herself around to glare at her sister, only to Haru with a weird expression. She looked... downcast. Which wasn't really something Natsu was used to. Haru had always been... a little too optimistic and cheerful. Annoyingly so, even when it seemed inappropriate at times. So seeing her like this... Natsu realized that she might have been holding her sister to some unreasonable standards. The two stayed there in silence, scrubbing their bodies off from what was now the previous day.
"Hey, Natsu?" Haru broke the silence first. "How did we end up being so different?"
Natsu paused before answering. She had wondered the same question herself. But she had a theory. "Haru, if you had to choose, who do you like better; mom or dad?"
"What? That question's a little..." She chuckled nervously for a bit, then shrugged. "I guess... dad? I don't have anything against mom, of course, but... he gets me a bit better, you know?"
"And you're a lot alike," Natsu confirmed. "He's busy working a lot of the time, but when he's around, he practically dotes on us. But he totally doesn't know how to talk to people, and he's an absolute dork. Sound familiar?"
"Don't you think that's maybe going a bit too far?" Haru responded, chuckling a bit, even though she could kind of agree. "Then I'm guessing that you like mom better, then?"
"Gun to my head? I think so..." Natsu answered. "All I ever see her doing is something around the house, or talking with us, or just being supportive in general. And despite doing stuff for us and dad all the time... she seems happy. And... I think that..." Natsu began to squirm around in embarrassment. "I think... that maybe one day... I'd like to do the same, you know?"
"Huh?"
"Haru... you're smart, and you're good at looking after people. And when you really try, you can work well with others. And you're always brave enough to take on new challenges. I think that... whatever you want to do in the future... you could probably do it... That's what I think, at least."
"That's... maybe the nicest thing you've said to me..." Haru marveled, though she seemed more bewildered than pleased at the moment.
"But I'm not like you are, Haru," Natsu continued. "I'm always worrying about what the worst thing that could happen is, and whenever something new comes up, I just want to run away. And in school, I study probably three times as much as you do, but I can only barely keep up with your test scores. It's infuriating sometimes!" Natsu chuckled as the little bits of frustration boiled up within her. "All the grand adventures you want to go on, the dangers you're willing to face... that stuff just isn't for me, alright? I want to... study in school, get into a good university, get a good-paying job and make some money. And maybe when I do that, I... you know. Find someone. Have a family, and... you know. Do what... mom does..."
"Natsu..." Haru leaned her head back so she was resting it on her sister's shoulder. She let out a hushed laugh as she said, "I've never even thought about my future like that, you know?" He laugh grew a bit louder before she cut it off. Probably best not to make so much noise so late at night. "But... I think it's pretty cool that you have."
"Even if what I want is... I don't know... lame? Or like... super cliché or something?"
"Nah. If you wanna do it, and you think it'll make you happy, then you should go for it one day, you know?" Natsu felt a hand grab hers underwater, and she grasped it in kind.
"That's..." Natsu had never really told anyone this ever before. Not even Haru. She was afraid that she'd find it... boring, or something. "Thanks..."
"Besides, I don't know about having a family for myself, but... I think I'd make a pretty cool aunt, right?" She didn't have to look to see the grin on her face. "Your future kids will totally like me way better than they'll like you!"
"Oh please!" Natsu retorted, giggling. She turned around and jabbed her sisters side with her elbow. "Maybe until they're five, and then they'll realize you're just a dork!"
"Sure maybe aunt Haru's a dork..." Haru sunk into the bathwater for a bit, scooped up and handful of bubbles and pressed them onto her face, then started talking in an old man's voice. "What about uncle Haruzen, with his magnificently bubbly beard?"
"Oh my god, take that off!" Natsu laughed, splashing her sister's face to erase the bubblebeard.
"Curses! I've been exposed as a fraud! You'll pay for that!" Haru retaliated by splashing water back at Natsu.
And not long after that, the bathroom became a watery mess.
After the two had dried off, got into pajamas, and lay in their respective beds, sleep still didn't come. So while Gabumon and Gaomon slept peacefully in the night, the two girls kept staring at the dark ceiling until Haru once again broke the silence.
"So... even after... what happened... I don't think I'm gonna stop going to the Digiworld," Haru proclaimed, her tone slightly apologetic. "But... If it's not something you wanna do, then I won't try and drag you around anymore. I promise. Gabumon and I can make due on our ow-"
"Oh my god, you're such an idiot, sometimes!" Natsu cut her off, though her tone was more amused than anything. "I already figured as much! And you know I can't let you go to such a place alone!" The two of them sat up.
"If it's dangerous, you shouldn't go!" Haru reasoned. "You could get killed, or like... get like, really hurt or something!"
"And the same things could happen to you, idiot!" Natsu countered. "Besides, if you and Gabumon are always off in the Digital World, then that just leaves Gaomon stuck here! You really think he'll stand for being a human world pet, or something?"
"That's... who cares about that!?" Haru didn't even seem to give the blue-furred dog a second thought. "It's clear that there's stuff that I can't protect you from, so-"
"Then we'll just have to get stronger..." Gabumon's voice spoke up, followed by a yawn. "Strong enough so that we'll be as strong as Mana and Nami... then... everything will be... okay..." The fur-coated lizard went back to snoozing.
"There, you see? Gaomon and Gabumon will just have to get stronger!" Natsu stated as if everything were solved.
"Then I guess... we can go there together, again?"
"Haru, if I let you go alone, then you'll probably get so caught up that you'll never return. So of course I'm coming with you!" Natsu heard her sister chuckle a bit.
"That... That's nice..." And soon after that, the girl fell asleep herself, whatever burden on her mind completely relieved.
As for Natsu... It was gonna be a long, sleepless night.
WC: 1825 or something, idk. Still way more than 1000.
