This MPC will be one of 85B: Outmatched. I would like Posts for this entry please.
It was the fifth day of Bezil’s fever. He had definitely felt something of an improvement from the past night, he coughed much less, his condition was improving, and by estimates, he should be fine by tomorrow. The Gumdramon just had to endure it for one more night. This would be less of an ordeal if it wasn’t for the dreams. Bezil had been dreaming such terrible memories, not of his own, but that of his father Owen, or at least, Owen’s previous life. These were memories that Owen had never spoke of, making them all the more terrible to go through, as these were memories of Jaelin’s final battles. As Bezil had finished his dinner for that evening and was reading a book in the leadup to bedtime, he heard a knock at the door. “Come in.” he called, and to his surprise, it was Owen come to visit. At once Bezil felt awkward, seeing him without personal protective equipment. “Dad! You shouldn’t be in here, I’m still infectious…” he objected, then saw that Owen looked as bad as he did when he had first come down with the disease. “Bit late for that, mate, looks like I’ve got what you have.” Owen replied, entering and closing the door. “I reckon it’d be better if I stay in here, if that’s okay with you.”“Oh, dad…” Bezil sighed, closing his book, coughing a little himself. “Well, alright. It makes sense, not like you can infect me again now that I’ve almost recovered.”“Thanks, mate. I appreciate it.” Owen said. “I’ll try not to bother you too much, I’ll just bunk up on your sofa…”Bezil’s princely room in Ys was spacious, with a large bed and a lounge suite, as well as an attached bathroom. The arrangement of Owen sleeping on the sofa wouldn’t be too much of a bother, but there was something that Bezil wanted to ask. “Actually, dad…” he began, hesitantly. “There’s been something I’ve been wanting to talk to you about.”“What is it, mate?” Owen asked, sitting down. He took off his khaki tunic and rested it on the back of his chair. Bezil sat down on another chair facing him. “While I’ve been sick… I’ve been having dreams.” Bezil admitted. “Dreams… that I’m pretty sure are your memories.”At once Owen looked rather uncomfortable. He plucked a tissue and coughed into it. “What… sort of memories?” he asked. There was only one word Bezil had to say to make him understand. “Jaelin.”Owen’s yellow eyes widened with shock, then he let out a long sigh. “I should’ve known this moment would come sooner or later.” the Gaomon admitted. “I didn’t want you to know about that time, but, you’re partly made up of my data, and it seems that data is replaying what’s written on it.”“It’s okay, dad, I don’t blame you for not wanting to tell me about it.” Bezil assured him. That at least eased Owen’s expression. “Well, I suppose now it’s best to ask, what memories have you experienced so far?” he asked. And Bezil recanted what he had dreamed of, the vivid memories of Captain Jaelin of the 7/71st Recon of the DWR. Owen listened in silence until he was finished, but seemed to grow steadily relieved the longer he spoke. “I see.” Owen said when Bezil had finished. “It seems like your mind is dealing with these memories by inserting you into the moment, rather than you remembering what I saw through my eyes. That’s a good thing. I… really don’t want you to feel what I felt back then.”“It still is hard to experience, dad.” Bezil admitted. Owen nodded with understanding, but remained silent. There was little he could do to ease these dreams. Unless… Bezil thought of something. “I’m probably gonna dream about it again tonight aren’t I, dad?” he asked. “Most likely.” Owen replied, a concerned expression on his face. Bezil hadn’t yet experienced the end of it, and it seemed likely he would tonight. “Dad… I’m a bit scared.” Bezil admitted. “Can… can you sleep with me tonight?”“Alright, mate. I will.” Owen said, gently, walking over and gripping his shoulder. “It’s gonna be tough, Bezil, but I’ll do what I can to help you get through it.”He let the reasoning behind it remain unspoken though. Owen had already experienced it, and had died from it as Jaelin. But he would be there for his son this night.

Bezil held off sleep as much as he could that night. He stayed up, watching funny videos with his father Owen to try to lighten the mood. It was good for a few hours, but eventually the time approached for them to get ready for bed. They took turns to shower and brush their teeth, then made preparations for bed.
“Are you sure you want this arrangement, mate?” Owen asked him one last time. “It’s not gonna be pleasant. I’m probably gonna cough a lot, and you might not sleep at all if that’s the case…”
Bezil was grateful for his father’s concern. “Yeah, it’s okay, dad, I want you to be there.” he assured him. “You can’t infect me any more, and, I think I need you nearby, if what my hunch tells me.”
Owen smiled, then coughed. When he was done, he acknowledged his decision. “Okay. Let’s just try to sleep as best we can then.” he said. And that was the best they could do.
It took at least an hour before Bezil felt tired enough to sleep over the noise of the sickness, but sleep eventually came. And he knew it had when the familiar sight of the barren landscape of the old DWR Flatlands came into his vision. By now, Bezil was used to it, he looked and saw he was wearing the auxilliary DWR tunic he had been given in nights before, and that the Gaomon in front of him didn’t have the warm, kind gaze of Owen, but the cold, war-weathered look of Jaelin, and by the look of it, it was night before dawn, the only light coming from the moon and stars above.
“Good, you’re awake, Bezil.” Jaelin said. “Hope you rested up well. Best have a big breakfast now, we need you out there on the field and I won’t have you de-digivolve from starvation.”
“Yes, sir.” Bezil said, and ate his MRE without question. Once it was over, he couldn’t help but notice that Jaelin was still looking at him, and it made him nervous. “Is… there anything else, sir?” he asked, uncomfortably.
“There’s something curious about you, Bezil.” Jaelin spoke, his voice very shrewd. “You’ve called me ‘dad’, more than once, and I don’t think you’ve done so mistakenly. I know when a digimon means what they say and when they’re just blabbing nonsense. I think you meant it when you called me ‘dad’, and I want to know why.”
Bezil gulped down the last of his breakfast. It was starchy and tasteless, as military rations tended to be, but it seemed this canine officer had him pinned down in a way he couldn’t get out of, other than to tell the truth. Why this was, Bezil didn’t know. Somehow, this dream… he felt more in control, more comfortable than before. Was it because his father was sleeping next to him and their data was resonating in a way it couldn’t before? Well, he had no way of knowing.
“Alright, sir, but, my explanation’s going to be difficult.” Bezil began. He looked up at Jaelin, then spoke clearly. “This is a fever dream I’m experiencing right now. I don’t know the ways or the means, but, somehow I’m experiencing the memories shared by my father Owen when he lived in his previous incarnation as… you.”
Jaelin blinked a couple of times, but thankfully didn’t react negatively. “So this is all a dream to you right now?” he asked.
“Yes, sir. I know for a fact that I exist over 100 years in the future with my family and friends, and this war happened long ago.” the Gumdramon continued. “Yet I’m experiencing these memories in my weakened state.”
“So you think you’re just a spectator here, right, Bezil?” Jaelin asked.
“Yes, I think so, sir.” Bezil answered. Then to his shock, Jaelin punched him, right in the cheek. He was knocked to the ground, clasping his face with pain. He glared back up at Jaelin with seething anger. Jaelin folded his arms.
“You’re not a spectator, Bezil, you’re a participant.” the Gaomon Captain said. “You’re experiencing this for a reason, so don’t you dare think that this is ‘just a dream’. Now get up, we haven’t finished talking.”
Bezil did so, sitting down on the rock he was previously perched on.
“So, you state that your father is a Gaomon named Owen, and that when I die, my data is reconfigured into him, correct?” Jaelin asked.
“Yes…” Bezil had to hold back from snapping.
“So you’re saying I don’t survive this war?”
“No, you don’t.” Bezil spat. “And I’m glad. Dad’s kind and brave and would never hit me, you’re just an asshole, Jaelin!”
“Hm.” Jaelin said, his face twitching a little. “You know, mate, I believe you. You’re right, I was an asshole to hit you, but, you’ve suddenly got real direct with me, and that’s what I wanted. I’m sorry for that, but, it was the simplest way I could make for certain, and I’ve been fighting this evil war long enough that I’ve forgotten my normal courtesies.”
Bezil then felt rather ashamed at his actions. But Jaelin didn’t allow him to wallow in shame for long.
“So, this ‘Owen’ Gaomon. Tell me about him.” Jaelin said. And Bezil did so, telling Jaelin all he knew about his father. That he fell in love with and married a Dorumon named Hikaru, how they lived together in a kingdom in the Shining Sea and had over a dozen children together, loving each and every one of them. That instead of becoming a soldier again, Owen taught combat and survival skills to young digimon in a new city called Rosewood, and that he was just and kind to everyone he came across. And that Owen had repeatedly saved his life. Bezil spoke story after story, and Jaelin listened in silence.
Eventually, Bezil ran out of things to say. By the time he did, the skies to the east were glowing a little as dawn approached. Bezil knew that when the sun rose, that would be the end of their talk.
“...thank you for telling me this, Bezil.” Jaelin spoke quietly at the end. He sounded like he was on the verge of tears, only he was smiling. “As you say, this is the past, but from the sounds of it, the next life is going to be worth it.”
“...I don’t understand, sir.” Bezil said, unsurely. Jaelin didn’t elaborate, but instead asked one more question.
“Have you ever met my father, Bredis?” he asked.
Bezil blinked at this. “...I’ve met Sten, sir, but not Bredis.” the Gumdramon said, unsurely.
“I see. Whatever happens, look out for him, mate.” Jaelin said. Bezil was a little bewildered, but knew that this conversation was over for now. “Help me wake up the rest of the team. We don’t have much time left.”
And Bezil did so, knowing that with daylight, the battle would soon follow.

As Bezil dreamed, the war of the old world continued in his consciousness. Yet he couldn’t shake off some startling thoughts that he had experienced. Jaelin had hit him, and it had felt real. Furthermore, he apologized for it, and reacted as though it was something more… real than a dream. Just… what was this experience?
Still, the events played out in his mind. As requested, Bezil helped wake up the remnants of their company. The Recon cycles were still capable of combat, but not capable of breaking through without armored support, which had been left behind the previous day. Their machine guns and rocket launchers would be useful, but only for a little while, they couldn’t hold off a full offensive.
Bezil roused Maxson the Commandramon, Braddon the Bearmon, Terry the Terriermon and Farrow the Falcomon, all of which seemed to be resigned to their fate. Jaelin woke up Skye and the remainder of their group.
Once everyone was up, they quickly ate their rations. Bezil noted that there was none left when they had finished, other than their emergency ones. ’Of course, DWR regulations state that you can’t eat those until absolutely necessary.’ He didn’t know where he had learned that, but he knew it for a fact.
As the sun began to rise as they finished, Jaelin called assembly and stood in front of them, ready for a speech. He looked very tired now, but spoke with as much gravitas as he could muster.
“I don’t think any of us have a doubt that today we’ll have the most important battle any of us have fought in our lives.” he began. “If we lose, we lose, but if we win and break through to the capital, we can strike back at Tactimon and win the war in an instant.”
’He knows it’s probably useless, but he’s using a sliver of hope to get everyone to pull through.’ Bezil noted.
“To win though, I’m going to need every single one of you to do your very best in your duty.” Jaelin continued. “Do not hesitate. Do not falter. When you kill an enemy, immediately lock on to the next target, and kill them, over and over again. Do not pause to try and load their data, if I catch you doing that, I’ll kill you myself. Stay alive as long as you can. Support each other. Show them that the DWR is worth fighting for. You all grew up in it as I did and learned a good way in life. Don’t let them destroy it.”
Bezil watched on, wondering if he had more to say, but he did not.
“Attend your battle positions. They’ll be attacking soon.” Jaelin finished. The whole company saluted, Bezil did too, and Jaelin saluted back. The 7/71st then rushed to their positions. Before they slept, they had moved their recon cycles into protected positions, where they could fire on the enemy with minimal exposure, manned by the digimon that couldn’t evolve beyond Child. Those that could would be held in reserve for when the battle started.
“Enemy spotted, sir!” Farrow called out to Jaelin. “2 kilometers away… it’s a scouting party, 8 digimon strong, an Adult level and 7 Childs.”
“Thank you, Farrow.” Jaelin replied to her, then sighed. “Of course, too far away to engage now, but they’re marking out their targets for their big guns.” he then turned to face him. “Bezil, have you ever seen a Mega level in combat?”
“Yes, sir.” Bezil answered. “Dad evolved to MirageGaogamon to save my life from a Sagomon.”
“Ah, of course, Owen.” Jaelin answered, evenly. “But at that time, he was on your side. This time, the Mega levels are coming from the other side.”
Bezil didn’t know what to say in response, so he remained silent. Jaelin continued.
“It is possible for multiple Perfect levels to take down a Mega level.” the Gaomon pressed on. “The only successful times that’s happened was when there were at least 4 Perfect levels against 1 Mega, and when they took them by surprise. Heh. Imagine what history would have to say about it if the two of us took down one by ourselves?”
Jaelin looked at Bezil for a moment, but his grin faded at the look on his face. “Yeah… that’s right. You know your history, mate. We don’t do that today.”
“We might have a chance somehow, sir.” Bezil replied, hopefully.
“I’d prefer to not rely on that chance, Bezil, but, in this situation, I have no other choice. Get ready, mate. Shit’s gonna get crazy very quickly very soon.”

Jaelin’s words were right. Moments after he said them, they saw flashes of large gunfire in the distance. Bezil whimpered a little as he heard the shells come in. It was a terrifying sound, like a distorted roar of a predator about to strike.
“GET DOWN!!” Jaelin roared, but everyone had done so before the shells hit. They slammed into their position, the explosions so loud that Bezil had to shield his ears from the apocalyptic thunder as they hit. The Gumdramon hoped they all hit their earthen and rocky shields in which they entrenched themselves, but as the artillery faded, he heard desperate screams for medics and healers, indicating some shells had hit true.
“ANYONE WHO CAN HEAL! HELP WHO YOU CAN!” Jaelin ordered. “WE’VE GOT SOME TIME!!” he then turned to Bezil. “Son, you evolve to Perfect on my mark, you understand me?” he said.
Bezil was a little startled that Jaelin called him ‘son’, but, he supposed he understood. They had established that as a probable fact after all, so he didn’t question it. All he did was nod and say “Yes, sir.”
A second artillery barrage roared toward them. Bezil panted through his clenched teeth. He had never even comprehended this way of war before, yet he knew what was going on. They were using these horrible weapons to soften them up for the main assault. More explosions erupted in their positions, and most catastrophically, one lucky shot had struck an entrenched Recon Cycle directly, destroying it and its crew in an instant.
“HOLD THE LINE!” Jaelin roared in response as soon as he had figured that out. Bezil understood that there was nothing they could do against the barrage but hope for luck. Three other recon cycles and their weapons were still present.
Thankfully there was not a third barrage. By now the enemy were making their advance. And when Jaelin confirmed it, he patted Bezil on the back. “Now, mate. Evolve!” he ordered, and Bezil obeyed, focusing everything he had into his evolution as he had done now seemingly many times.
The enemy forces were caught by surprise when as they advanced up the slope to their foe, first a MachGaogamon and then an Arresterdramon swooped down upon them, both of them launching terrible attacks upon them. The advance scouts, comprised of Rookies and Champions had no choice but to duck and hope to survive. Jaelin and Bezil held nothing back though, they made sure to release their attacks in waves to wipe out the advance guard. They were backed up by the machine guns and rockets of the recon cycles, as well as their own light artillery and various weapons and attacks. And they circled back to do so again on the survivors.
At an inner level, Bezil was horrified that he was doing such a thing, but at the same time, he knew why he had to do it. The screams of his comrades as they were shattered by the artillery, the despicable combat of the days before, this was true war. And he now knew why his father Owen was so hesitant to speak about it. This was… a whole new level of horror for him. The only way he could cope with his actions was to not think about them. He was following orders, the digimon he was attacking were not real. Even though they felt like it… no, such thoughts he could not think about right now.
“Okay, Bezil, they’re retreating! Cease fire!” Jaelin ordered, and Bezil stopped, seeing the remaining forward attack retreat down the slope from their position.
“Did we win, sir?” Bezil found himself asking, although he knew deep down the answer.
“That was just the first wave, mate.” Jaelin replied. “Now their big bosses are going to want to know why they failed. It only gets worse from here. Get down, but don’t de-digivolve. They’ll be sending their Perfect levels up against us next, and us two will be their targets."
“Yes, sir.” Bezil said in response, then ducked down behind cover, along with Jaelin. They were near Brad, who was operating an intricate looking cannon, mostly camouflaged under a thick net, further screened by gravel.
“What are they sending us, Brad?” Jaelin asked the Bearmon.
“Gigadramon, sir.” Brad answered in response. This made Jaelin grin a little.
“Perfect.” the MachGaogamon exclaimed, and Bezil could tell it was something out of glee rather than stating the enemy level. “Lock in and fire when you have the shot.”
There was a pause, as Bezil heard the mechanical wingbeats approach. Then all at once, Brad fired the cannon, and a blue flash lit up the dawn sky. Bezil looked and saw with amazement that Brad’s cannon shot had taken down the cyborg dragon, making it disintegrate into data before it hit the ground.
“Good work, Brad, knew you could do it!” Jaelin praised him. He looked at Bezil. “Ion Cannon. Works wonders against machine digimon, and boy does Tactimon rely on those. Not much use in a full battle though, takes way too long to recharge.”
“Yet it’s still not over, sir?” Bezil prompted, hesitantly.
“No, mate.” Jaelin said, looking like he was barely holding his own composure. “Next, I think Tactimon will want to know exactly how one of his senior officers got shot down, and he won’t be in a mood to play fair.”

Bezil panted in a state of semi-sleep. He knew it was a dream, more a nightmare, but, he felt the need to endure it somehow. The remnants of his fever were fading from his body, the fever that had made these dreams so terrible to begin with, but, his father Owen shared his bed, he too suffering from the same sickness. And somehow Bezil felt his protection even in his semi-conscious state.
Bezil was reliving the last memories of his father’s predecessor – Jaelin, the soldier. And in his mind, he was reliving the last moments that Jaelin had spent alive. They had just defeated two waves of attacks from the enemy, here in the DWR’s last stand against the insurgent rebel forces. And it seemed that they were now waiting for the end.
Yet there was something about all this that Bezil felt strange about. This was no normal dream. In fact he felt realistic interactions through the whole thing. But these were questions that he felt that were probably not worth the risk in answering.
For now, he watched the same direction as his father. Both evolved to their Perfect forms – MachGaogamon and Arresterdramon. Somehow… Bezil felt really comfortable with this arrangement. He had always thought highly of his father, and this event in his consciousness of them being side by side at this level felt nice.
“Bezil…” Jaelin eventually spoke. “I would like to properly apologize for hitting you. It was wrong of me. I make no excuses because of it.”
Bezil was hesitant in how to respond to this. Yes it was wrong, but he understood why he did it. All he could say in response was “...alright, sir. I forgive you.”
“That’s all you have to say?” Jaelin turned to him. “You said that you’d be glad I’d die because of it, obviously I hurt you so much that you’d say something like that…”
Bezil then realized that Jaelin was genuinely upset by this exchange. The Arresterdramon struggled for words in response.
“I-I’m sorry… it’s just…” Bezil stammered, but failed to find what to say. Thankfully Jaelin figured it out by himself.
“Yeah, I get it… the digimon I get reconfigured into turns out to be a better father than I could ever hope for.” he concluded with a sigh. “Well, mate, here we are, as we are, in this moment in time. Let’s face what’s ahead of us and forget about the past for the moment. Tactimon approaches.”
Jaelin spoke true. Bezil saw the black figure grow larger as he approached in the morning sky. Clad in heavy samurai armor, his enormous sword in its scabbard on his back, Tactimon landed in front of Jaelin.
“So, here we stand.” the warrior digimon began, his voice a fearsome baritone. “All that stands between my triumph and the rotten decrepit core of the DWR is its finest lapdog, Captain Jaelin.”
“Yeah, well, someone has to keep the trash out.” Jaelin retorted. Tactimon made a noise of mirth. He looked at Bezil.
“And who is this henchmon? I don’t believe I know an Arresterdramon such as him…” he focused somewhat. “...with yellow eyes. Same as yours. How quaint, Jaelin.”
“Yep, this is Bezil, he’s my son.” Jaelin replied, flippantly. “So, exactly why are we talking right now? Surely you with all your so called brilliance should be going about destroying us before advancing to the final phase of your treason?”
Tactimon regarded him chillingly. “We’re talking because I respect you as a soldier, Jaelin.” he said. “You know as well as I do that the fools in the capital will lead us to ruin. I’m speaking to you now because I would have you as one of my officers, if you renounce your loyalty to the rotten cadre you currently serve.”
Bezil was astonished at how earnest he sounded, and Jaelin seemed to respond with serious thought. The Arresterdramon watched the digimon that his father once was make his decision.
“We all swore oaths when we attained our positions in the army of the DWR.” Jaelin eventually said. “I swore an oath to defend the society we built. Not to you, Tactimon. That is what I remain loyal to.”
“You remain loyal to corruption, filth and, once I’m done with it, dust?” Tactimon asked, dangerously, seemingly giving him one last chance.
“I defend the DWR from its enemies.” Jaelin replied, his yellow eyes glaring at Tactimon. “And as long as you keep on this path, you’re one of them.”
It seemed there were no more words to say. Tactimon raised his sealed sword. Jaelin and Bezil prepared to respond, then Tactimon launched a horrific wave attack… at Bezil.
“NO!!” Jaelin roared, and interposed himself in front of the Arresterdramon. Bezil gasped in astonishment at the speed of it. He felt the wind lash at him from behind Jaelin, but also saw the horror that crumpled the MachGaogamon’s armor from the intensity of the attack. Tactimon approached slowly, one step after another.
“So, you care about your son after all.” Tactimon stated. “Then I gather you know how I felt when the cretins you serve sent my own son to his death.”
Jaelin couldn’t reply. The attack had winded and wounded him. Bezil could see the data rising from him. But he wasn’t going to die soon. Jaelin glared at Tactimon with an expression of utmost hatred. “Sir, no!” Bezil pleaded as Jaelin struggled back to his feet.
“Shut up. Help me stand.” Jaelin growled, in a tone that Bezil couldn’t argue with. He did so. “Everything I know, everything I care about, everyone I love stands behind me right now, Tactimon…” the MachGaogamon snarled. “And I swear you will not take a step further… as long as I live.”
“Admirable statement, but one more strike and you’ll be nothing but dust, Jaelin.” Tactimon replied. Then Jaelin’s eyes flashed.
”ULTIMATE SHINKA!!” he snarled, and his body glowed white. Bezil gasped and staggered back, feeling both the intensity and emotion of Jaelin’s data. He saw him evolve as Owen had done in Whitewater City when saving everyone from the hurricane. Jaelin transformed from MachGaogamon to MirageGaogamon. The display was so fierce that even Tactimon drew back from the intensity, let alone Bezil and the rest of the surviving forces.
Seconds later, the evolution was stable, and Jaelin faced his foe on an equal level.
“So, this is how it is then.” Tactimon remarked. “A pity. You would have done well by my side, Jaelin.”
“I don’t think so.” Jaelin replied, coldly. “You asked for death when you attacked my son. Now you can have it.”
Bezil watched all this with awe and horror, but, in the moment before the digimon came to blows, he heard a familiar voice.
’You don’t need to see any more, mate.’
And Bezil felt dragged out of this situation in an instant. He opened his eyes, panting, crying. He saw a familiar face above him, yellow eyes, blue and white fur. “Dad…” he whimpered, and embraced his father as they laid in their bed in Ys. They were safe now. It was the last remnants of his fever dream.
“Dad… I saw so many horrible things…” Bezil sniffled. “Of Jaelin, and Tactimon…”
“Ssh, it’s okay, mate, I know.” Owen replied, embracing him back. “I’m so sorry that you had to experience all that. I wish that old life had never happened… but it did. And that you had to go through all that too… it’s not fair, mate. I’m sorry.”
It took a little while for them to calm down. It wasn’t until Owen remarked “Oh, hey, your fever’s broke.” that Bezil realized that he actually felt much better. That cheered the Gumdramon up considerably. But it faded a little when he realized his Gaomon father was in the middle of his own fever.
“Oh, dad, what should I do?” Bezil asked.
“Get your brother Haku to make sure you’re fully recovered first.” Owen advised.
“Alright.” Bezil nodded. “Then I’ll ask him what I can do for you.”
“That’s the spirit, mate.” Owen grinned, coughing a little more. “We’ll get through this little predicament.”
Bezil hesitated before leaving, then decided to act while the feeling was fresh. He gave Owen one last hug. “I love you, dad.” he said. “For who you are now, and for back when you were Jaelin.”
Owen was a little too startled by these words to say anything before his son left the room. Eventually, he smiled.
’We have a good boy here.’ a voice deep within him remarked.
