6 months after the events of Golden Week…
Commander Hashimoto had summoned the three agents and their digimon partners to his office. He sighed heavily as he waited for them, the news he was about to give them pressing on his mind. He didn’t look up as the door opened, only when agents Tiger, Machine and Maria were standing in front of him did he do so.
“Good morning.” he said. They looked at him curiously, obviously noticing that he likely didn’t have good news for them. “This will be our last briefing.”
“What do you mean by that, sir?” Agent Maria asked, somewhat concerned.
“Long story short, DATS is now defunct.” Hashimoto said. This made Tiger and Maria gasp, while Machine grew very still. “The Japanese government’s policy has changed. Director Suzuki has been dismissed, and we are to cease all operations as of today.”
“Why is that?” Tiger asked.
“The government’s security committee conducted a secret inquiry into the events of Golden Week.” the Commander explained. “They found that our mission doctrine was unacceptable and exacerbated the situation. They also found that under Director Suzuki’s policies, we were doing more to provoke digimon activity than to suppress it. Therefore they have decided to revert to the policies they had before DATS came into existence.”
The three DATS agents were still stunned by the sudden news, but Machine recovered first. “I thought so.” he said. “That’s pretty much what we’ve been hearing from the tamers we’ve encountered. Most of them seem happy to keep the peace, and it’d be too much trouble to arrest them all like Suzuki wanted.”
“So… what happens now?” Tiger asked, now looking quite worried.
“The three of you will be transferred to other government security departments. I can discuss that with you later if you like, but as of now, there are no official departments that deal with digimon.” Hashimoto said. “Obviously you will need to keep your digimon partners a secret, but you may keep them at your side all the same. Oh yes, and the evolution disruption network will remain in place and maintained by other departments. Obviously we still cannot risk Mega level digimon being let loose near civilization.”
“So… that’s it then.” Agent Maria said, sounding a little flat, but there was relief on her face. “I somewhat knew this day was coming… father was growing too tyrannical. He was always like this.”
Hashimoto nodded. “Director Suzuki’s methods were not workable, and would have led us to ruin if we enacted them. He's also facing a criminal inquiry for his actions, and will likely face a lengthy term in prison, considering the evidence that was seized overnight regarding his plans. However, all blame falls on him. None of you face any such inquiries, these were all his orders and decisions.”
Maria seemed conflicted about this, but nodded.
“Then… what happens if digimon attack Tokyo again?” Tiger asked, looking upset.
“I believe there’s enough tamers out there to deal with them.” Hashimoto said. “It’s no longer for us to say.”
With that, all DATS operations ceased as instructed. The agents gathered their things, settled their contracts and accounts, and left for the last time.
“For now, Chosen, the rest is up to you.” former Commander Hashimoto said quietly as he too left the building.
