Our Own Worth [Skald/Syre]

Syre: C'mon, you can't just stay inside all day again.
Syre: Come with me on my morning run. Fresh air will do you good! That was how the day for Skald started: a text from his older sister, to get out of the cabin and at least stretch out his legs a bit. Today, the two wouldn't be running in the snow, the feline making a portal to a much more palatable location in the Network Plains. The long flat expanses and the relatively-well-marked trails made it a perfect place to get some morning exercise.
Syre led on with a brisk jog, her wrists and ankles restricted with weights - but the feline was used to the routine. In fact, she was going a little slower than usual, to allow the Renamon behind her to catch his own pace. The idea was simple:
Get the blood moving. Get some fresh air, and help Skald spend some more time out of the cabin - though it wasn't exactly clear if Skald was enjoying it. The feline took careful glances back - not trying to make it obvious - the BlackGatomon keeping a grin on her face.
"Guess it's been a while since you've been out like this?" The cat would start to slow down, stretching her back as she slowed their run to a stop. "How you holding up, bro?"

Skald: Sure I can. It’s as easy as just not opening the blinds.
Skald: .....fine.
The text from his older sister definitely didn’t help skald’s morning go like he hoped. Trying to go through more denied job applications mixed with some flat out black listing him. That always tended to hurt a bit and he couldn’t help but flinch at seeing that. The two thankfully weren’t running in the snow; while skald didn’t mind it he did however felt like a change of pace was needed.
Syre was used to this sort of thing, skald was not. So of course he lagged behind; though he wasn’t sweating it was obvious he was struggling just a bit. Paper muscles were still made out of paper and even though the renamon was a lightweight this didn’t help him all too much. He’d have to stop and put his hands on his legs, his ears drooping just a bit.
”I don’t generally go out on runs so no.”
The black renamon-x panted a bit and he’d rub at the back of his neck as syre slowed to that stop. Yeah sure she was in champion but those weights probably meant that she was training her own muscles. The sort that skald lacked. He’d sigh a bit and his jog was replaced with a brisk walk to get caught up to his older sister.
”Feels like my lungs are on fire. But that’s normal I suppose. How bout you Sy- Sis?”
The fumble was alittle weird to him, since he truly wasn’t used to calling anyone other than herald sister. But usually the whole word and in a more sort of… jesting manner? But he couldn’t help but feel that syre was serious when saying it. Or at least she meant the word.

"Well, I think I'm starting to feel the burn, anyway..."
Shoot, maybe this wasn't the best idea. Skald was already panting for air, the taller fox struggling to keep up with his interesting biology. Realizing that, Syre wouldn't press to continue on their run. Instead, after stopping and taking a moment to stretch, she'd try and turn the topic.
"Still awkward to call me 'sister'? Syre's fine, ya'know." The feline would take a seat, a smile on her face as she racked her thoughts. Though they were brother and sister, the true were worlds apart - as to be expected from a 'barkeep from the underworld' and a 'self-sacrificing knight'. Did Skald really get cut from the same cloth as her?
'So, um... what do you think of it up in Snowflake?' Syre thought to ask that question, but bit her tongue before it came out. Those job applications in the wastebasket showed everything. Wherever Skald was before wasn't doing him any favors now... was this run a bad idea?
... No, no. Syre mentally shook her head, and pressed with another question. One that got closer to the point:
"Why'd you say 'yes' this time? Glad to have you around, of course, but... I guess I got a bit used to you brushing me off?"

”Well you are wearing weights. Sturdy looking ones at that.”
Skald exhaled a bit and tried to stretch his limbs; really he wasn’t built for physical exercise and this was just proving it to him again. Herald would likely have a blast because it’d just increase her mass and make her abilities a tad bit deadlier. The fox would pause and hearing the other say that he’d sigh.
”It’s hard to call anyone other than herald sister; but even so it’s not like I’m not trying. I guess it’s just…”
The renamon took a seat next to his older sister; syre was the oldest out of the lot of them. With holly in the middle and skald smack dab at the end. Of K’s children at least. He wasn’t sure how to feel about silence and her children. Half siblings technically; or full blooded depending on who you asked.
”Growing up on my own made it a little difficult to form attachments to folks I haven’t fought or bled side by side with. So maybe I’m just. A little more skeptical about it being this easy. Either that or old habits. I’m not sure at this point.”
Skald opening up to syre about something would probably be a surprise. Most of the time she’d get flat brush answers. The silence sat there for a few moments and then hearing that question the renamon-x rubbed at the back of his neck.
”I needed fresh air really. So many places turned me down for employment, even in other cities I just needed to get away from things. Mikemon said he’d help me get back on my feet but I don’t like the idea of just… sitting around and twiddling my thumbs. I feel like I should be doing something, going somewhere, interacting./b]”
Skald wrung his hands a bit and he’d stare down at his folded legs. The tall gait that the renamon-x had would normally outpace others of his level due to how the foxes were but… Skald was definitely different.
”Spose you could say that I was a little nervous spending any real amount of time with you too. Most of this family is nice. I just don’t feel like I fit in at all.”

It wasn't easy for Skald to open up.
Syre knew that from the start. From the moment that Mikemon brought him home, Skald seemed to be reclusive, staying to his room and his own business. Heck, even Herald didn't visit all that often - and hearing his explanation made it even clearer. After everything that happened, to just be 'handed' a lifeboat like that? Skald didn't think he deserved it. Or, at the very least, he was skeptical at the offer.
"From my perspective, things aren't looking that easy in your world, Skald." The feline sighed, shaking her head. So many tossed job applications, outright bans from certain positions... could Skald really only hold a job as a barkeep? "And believe me, I know you're trying to pay it forward."
Syre knew that much! She'd sit down next to Skald, about a foot away, folding her arms over her knees. "Honestly, I wish I could spend more time around you all. Um, that aside," Syre didn't want to drift too far off topic, "If you weren't mired in job applications, what would you want to do, Skald?"

”Things are never easy. Which is why… I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised about some things.”
He wasn’t really sure what to say about that; what with herald having her own business to run she couldn’t always care for her brother. Which was fine; he wasn’t the sort to ask her to do so. They had drifted apart, not as siblings so much as just having to handle different things. The only reason the goat didn’t visit more often is that she felt like she was intruding!
”I have to try. Giving up isn’t in my nature.”
The renamon-x grumbled a bit and just rub at the back of his neck. Hearing that the other wished she could spend more time around everyone skald had to wonder… why couldn’t they? He’d look down at his hands; half lidded and somewhat contemplative. He knew why. He kept pushing her away; which would make a gap open up even if she kept trying time and time again.
”Well maybe we could figure something out that doesn’t make me feel like a hole is going to open up in my chest or something.”
He’d give a wry grin and then shift in his spot; if he wasn’t mired in job applications what would he want to do? He’d rub at his chin a bit and consider exactly. What would someone like him want to do? The answer was never simple on these things but there was a little spark and the renamon-x found himself rubbing his face with a hand. A groan escaped him.
”Don’t laugh but. After finding out about mother and all that. It’s hard not to see myself trying to do some real good for the world. I was so used to doing back handed things because of the lot I was tossed into. This whole… aura nonsense being limiting. So I tried instead to change things in less than legal ways. Which is why before I Didn't really have a problem with what I was doing.”

Skald wasn't one to give up.
Syre knew this from the start, but to hear it right from the fox's lips put a grin on the feline's own. And for that second bit, Syre stifled a chuckle to match Skald's own amused expression.
"Noted. I'll figure out something other than exercise next time!" Syre meant that - she wanted to spend more time with Skald, and get to know this long-lost brother of hers. Silence, Coal, and Amber were nice, but Skald and Holly were the 'last' connections that she had, that were tied to K. And for Skald, the relationship was quite interesting.
Even moreso when Skald showed his good intentions.
"... Hm..." But what 'good' could Skald do? Syre didn't mean that thought in a mean way, more a literal one: "I'd suggest the Knights, but Iko would probably give you a pretty hard test. Let's see..."
The cat mulled it over in her head again. She wanted to 'attack' the problem, but this wasn't the easiest thing to solve. All she could do was suggest: "... A bit outside Whitewater, there's a tree - one that grew from mom's data while she was meditating there. If you're interested in mom, in 'K', then maybe you should visit."
Syre sighed. She didn't like visiting their too much. Just a past memory, an image - one that made her heart sink a little lower after seeing it.

Seeing that grin on syre’s face made skald blink; okay so what did she have in mind now? Or was it because he said something that she wanted to hear? With her saying that she’d find something else for them to do next time made him wonder just how badly she wanted to spend time with her brother. Was all that was tying them together really K?
”If I think of anything I’ll certainly let you know. Suggestions and all that.”
Skald folded his arms thoughtfully; he didn’t know just how important this was to his sister. Maybe it was because he really didn’t understand K or how much of an impact she had on the people that she interacted with. The renamon-x blinked slowly and looked down to his hands. The knights?
”...I don’t know if I’d be a good fit for them. But sometimes you don’t know the things you’d be best at.”
There was a pause between the two of them. Outside of whitewater there was a tree that grew where his mother had meditated for quite some time. The renamon-x considered quietly that he should visit there if he was interested.
”I should probably visit there. I am interested in mother but… it’s hard to really get too invested in someone that is gone unfortunately. Given how I was born after she was gone… all I can hear is how she was from those that knew her best.”
He’d sigh along with his sister and after a moment would stand up, dusting himself off. He’d give a small smile to his older sister.
”Maybe we could go there after this little run? Then perhaps afterwards go to whitewater. For lunch?”

K was definitely an internal connection - but to say it was the only reason that Syre was doing this would be disingenuous. The BlackGatomon was a caring cat, one willing to raise an ear and help out when she was able to - and Skald was family. Not just family, but a surprisingly kind diamond in the rough, who just needed a little help getting up on his feet.
"As far as the Knights go, I honestly don't know. Iko can be particular at times. He's not one to take people just with 'good intentions'." No, they had to walk-the-walk too - and it was hard to tell if Skald honestly had that experience.
That topic passed by soon enough, though, as Skald mentioned visiting the tree directly. To that, Syre's paw gave a slight twitch - as if the feline was somehow against the idea, herself - but she got over her own feelings. She slowly gave a nod, and moved to draw out her D-Terminal.
"We can go there right now if you want. Not sure if you'd last the last of the run, really." The cat gave a chuckle, and a small sigh. "Fair warning, the 'K' you're about to meet is as she was when she was meditating. She knows she has passed, but the details of how or why might be somewhat spotty. Or they might not be."
She'd open the portal in front of them, and slowly stand up, stretching out her back.
"Just saying - she won't know who you are. She hardly knew who I was."
