Kiyo was exhausted. She chugged an energy drink in an attempt to keep her eyes open. She'd been taking an online course to get some kind of IT degree. She was completely blanking on what kind of degree it was specifically, in that moment, and wondered if the pain was even worth it. But it was, she told herself. No one liked to employ a coder without any degree's, you can't trust some random nobody without the necessary qualifications. So here she was at one am trying to rush her final assignment before the due date, and cram in as many mock exams as possible for the final exam later that day.
Kiyo didn't doubt she could get the passing grade needed to get the qualification. She coded more complicated programmes in her free time on a semi-regular basis. But she had been side tracked, kept busy looking after digital creatures from a world she didn't know existed half a year ago. She hadn't realised the deadline had been closing in, so here she was, typing away on her laptop in an attempt to get it finished within the next two hours or so.
She rubbed at her eyes and leaned back against the edge of her bed. She'd moved over the kotatsu so she had something for back support. She let her hands drift down to the two Digimon snoozing in her lap. The two twins were happily dozing, bundled up together and blanketing Kiyo's lap to keep her warm. It was cosy, and comforting. Kiyo was tempted to just close her eyes and take a nap, but not yet. This was worth it, a full time job would mean a steady income which is very much needed when looking after a menagerie of digital creatures.
With a gently sigh, Kiyo got back to work. The assignments were the easy part, really, it was just time consuming. She needed to code a programme that would automatically calculate a delivery cost based on items placed in the shopping cart. She had to factor in different bundle amounts and the quantities of each item to make sure the calculations were working correctly. But eventually, almost an hour later, it seemed to be working correctly. She ran a few more tests, making sure she tried as many different weird and wonderful combinations and each time the cost came up correctly.
With a triumphant fist pump, she saved her work and submitted it on the online forum provided to her. With that out of the way, she clicked the link for the mock exam. This was where she was a little more apprehensive. She knew how to code pretty well, and she was up to date on most of the jargon, but she was self taught and had little experience in a job environment. The exam was focussed mostly on the job aspects, and while she'd kept up in the classes despite missing a fair few, she wasn't sure if what she'd retained would be enough.
She took almost another hour getting through the mock exam, second guessing herself and most of her answers. But she finally clicked the finish button and waited anxiously for the final result. She let out a breath of air as the screen flashed with a pass. Well, the mock exam went well. Surely the real thing will be just as easy. Regardless, it eased her worries slightly.
With the necessary prep work over with, she could finally close her eyes and rest. She made sure her alarm was set on her phone, and that there was enough charge for it to last. With everything sorted, she pulled over the nearby blanket, leaned back against the side of the bed and went to sleep.
Kiyo was awoken by a sharp beeping noise and a very distinct slapping against her side and chest.
"Kiyoooo. Turn it off, it's too noisy!" That was Mimi, the only one whiny enough to complain instead of turning off the alarm herself. There were some more slapping noises, an ear against the table, and the beeping was soon silenced.
"Thank you, Usagi." Kiyo grumbled, knowing the more mature of the twins had taken it upon himself to turn off the alarm. Kiyo had two hours to get ready and psych herself up for the final exam. This one actually required leaving the apartment and going to a facility where they'd set them all up on their own computers. They wanted to prevent as much cheating as possible, after all.
"All right, time to get up." Kiyo mumbled to herself, she maneuverer the twins from her lap to the bed as she got up to get ready for the day. A quick shower and a fresh set of clothes later and Kiyo was munching her way through a bowl of cereal.
"You two are to stay in here until I get back, there's snacks in the cupboards and you can watch TV. But if you leave, you'll get shoved back in the Loader whenever I have to do human world stuff and lose hang out privileges."
"We'll behave." Usagi says, sat on her bed with a slice of toast. Mimi looks a little put out at the minor scolding, but she had caused a minor incident the last time they were all left alone so it was only slightly warranted. So she didn't complain.
"Right, I'm off, I'll be back in a few hours. I'll bring back treats if you behave!" Kiyo placed the now empty bowl in the kitchen sink and swiftly retreated out the door before the potential of treats caused Mimi to question what kinds and how many.
A quick train ride and she was soon stood in front of the building where the final exam was taking place. She signed in at the reception desk and was escorted to the rented out room. There were a few other people there, a few her age, some younger and even a few older. A rather interesting bunch for an IT course, that's for sure.
With a deep breath, she powered through the exam. Despite the success on the mock exam, and the fact that she knew her final assignment was of top tier quality (if she did say so herself), her nerves were a little shaky. If she couldn't get through this, her chances of earning proper money dwindled even further. Freelance work only paid so much.
She finished up the exam, uncertain of the result. It had felt almost too easy, it should never be that simple, right? She was told to wait for the results in another room, and it was slowly filled with the other participants. By the end of it, everyone was given their results in a small envelope.
With shaky hands, Kiyo opened it to find she had passed. With a sigh of relief, she read on to note they'd send her the proper certificate digitally. Well, she was certainly in the mood to buy some treats now. She certainly deserved it.
